Based on the challenges that are offered today by society, science, technology, and the regional, national and international contexts in which agriculture and rurality are unfolding, it is argued that the paradigms that have sustained the agricultural sciences and professions and their rules and protocols are insufficient for confronting and solving them in an integral fashion. The empirical evidence surpasses the theoretical and assumed limits from which these challenges are analyzed and their solutions proposed. To successfully confront the new challenges and contexts, new paradigms will be required that define a core group of scientific and engineering bases and a minimum unit of study and work. This minimum unit should permit, from a systemic and harmonic perspective, the identification and analysis of the factors that influence the productive processes and their contexts, the work in these disciplines and the formulation of questions and needs. In the agrarian sciences, this change in paradigm could be represented by the agroecosystemic viewpoint, which permits a) the hierarchical organization of the work and research unit and its levels of interaction; b) the presentation of the productive process as a result of the integrated effect of socioeconomic, ecological, cultural, scientific, and technological factors; c) the integral identification of the problems and solutions; d) the breaking of disciplinary limits; e) the responding to demands for an agriculture that is sustainable, competitive, multifunctional, and equitable.</text>

The effects of organic versus conventional farming methods in soil fertility and intercropping yields (Phaseolus vulgaris x Sorghum sp.) was studied throughout three growing seasons (1995A-1996A). The methodoly used to conduct the study was to divide the field into parcels, aplying natural vs chemical disease controls, monoculture vs intercropping and manure vs chemical fertilizers. As well as other experience carried out in 1994, neither bean growing season presented significant differences between the two agricultural systems, although the yield of sorghum in the organic farming system was superior to that of the conventional system during 1995B, probably due to edaphic effects. The Efficient Land Use Index<br />(IET) were superior to 1 during all over the experience, showing the benefits of the intrercropping systems. There was increases on pH, exchangecationiccapacity, totalcations and total soil saturation that also increasedsoil fertility from lower to medium levels in both organical and conventional systems.<br /></text>

<text>The present research aims to evalúate the interaction of simple and combined endophytic bacteria, to develop new bioinoculants formulations, over the agronomic variables of the quinoa cultivation, to genérate viable alternatives for the Andean farmers. A powder product was obtained by mixing a bioinoculants formulation developed with three single and combined strains of Bacillus sp. and an inert substrate, to be compared in a greenhouse/in vitro environment with a commercial product (TRICOBAL) as a positive control group and normal soil (without inoculants) as a negative control group. The following treatments were identified: Bacillus pumilus (Bp), interaction between Bacillus pumilus and Paenihacillus polymyxa (Bp + Bv54) and the combination of Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus suhtilis and Paenihacillus polymyxa (Bp + Bs + Bv54) with prominent results on: plant height (104.14 cm), panicle height (34.32 cm), roots weight (5 grs.) and grain performance; demonstrating that these native strains significantly promote the growth of quinoa plants in relation to the commercial product (TRICOBAL). In addition, it was determined that in an in vitro environment the three used strains of Bacillus can coexist.</text>

<text>This study was carried out at the Laboratory of Plant Ecology located in the forestry nursery of the Federal University of Paraíba in Areia city. It was aimed to improve the abilities of the farmers to practice cuttings production as a profession. The knowledge was focused in the following goals: collect, storage and processing of forestry seeds; formation of nurseries and cutting production; as well to distribute cuttings to five communities in Areia and Alagoa Grande city. In this work were trained 272 people in nursery activities, with emphasis on generation of employment, income and social inclusion. The production and the distribution of cuttings involved five communities of Areia and Alagoa Grande, but got benefits to other communities in several municipalities in the regional context, including schools and others social organizations. Around 140 thousand of cuttings over 74 arboreal species were produced and distributed. This work showed that forestry nursery is a potential activity for the farmers in this region, being able to contribute to the improvement of the environment, as well to generate employment, income and other social benefits.</text>

<text>Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, a disease affecting mainly the respiratory system, has become the major cause of a worldwide crisis, imposing a real challenge for the healthcare systems. The underlying pathological mechanisms of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), such as increased inflammatory and immune responses, endothelial damage, prothrombotic status, were expected to increase the incidence of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), but observational studies so far indicate an important reduction in ACS admissions and treatment, possibly because of the fear of contagion, reorganization of medical structures and reduction of physical activity. Further work is needed to identify the factors responsible for this situation.</text>
