<text>Plant metabolites have been used for many years to control pests in animals and to protect crops. Here, we reviewed the available literature, looking for the species of Mexican flora for which extracts and metabolites have shown activity against pest insects and parasitic nematodes of agricultural importance, as well as against nematodes that parasitize domestic cattle. From 1996 to 2018, the search for novel and eco-friendly biopesticides has resulted in the identification of 114 species belonging to 36 botanical families of Mexican plants with reported biological effects on 20 insect species and seven nematode species. Most plant species with detected pesticide properties belong to the families Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Lamiaceae. Eighty-six metabolites have been identified as pesticidal active principles, and most have been terpenoids. Therefore, the continuation and intensification of this area of research is very important to contribute to the generation of new products that will provide alternatives to conventional pesticide agents. In addition, future studies will contribute to the recognition and dissemination of the importance of propagating plant species for their conservation and sustainable use.</text>

<text>The use of nanoparticles (NPs) has generated an alternative pest control. The objective was to evaluate the insecticidal effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs), and their combination on Bactericera cockerelli (Hemiptera: Triozidae) second-stage nymphs under laboratory and greenhouse conditions in tomato. The laboratory research was carried out with the leaf immersion bioassay method under a complete randomized design, and in the greenhouse by direct plant spraying under a randomized block design; in both designs, a control without NPs was added. Mortality was recorded every 24 h for 4 days. Both NPs in the laboratory and greenhouse showed toxicity to B. cockerelli nymphs. Results in the laboratory showed that NPs significantly caused increased mortality of 88, 99, and 100% 96 h after treatment of ZnO NPs, TiO2 NPs, and their combinations, at 1000, 100, and 250 ppm, respectively. Direct spray of plants in the greenhouse showed low mortality with 27, 32, and 23% after 96 h of ZnO NPs, TiO2 NPs, and their combinations, at 3000, 500, and 250 ppm, respectively. These results on B. cockerelli control seem promising. Nanoparticles as insecticides are a novel strategy, however, further investigation is required in field tests to obtain suitable efficacy for use in a pest management system.</text>

<text>The bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae), causes severe post-harvest losses in the common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L. The control of this insect is still poor and involves the use of conventional insecticides. There is an increasing demand in the search for new active substances and products for pest control towards reduction of adverse effects on human health and the environment. The protection of grains with alternative products, such as essential oils, is a possible alternative to meet the needs described above. Therefore, this investigation evaluated the applications of basil, Ocimum basilicum, and citronella, Cymbopogon winterianus, essential oils for A. obtectus control. These essential oils significantly reduced the bean weight losses and the number of beans damaged by A. obtectus at higher doses than 60 or 120 μL/sample. The number of holes per bean did not differ between the doses of basil essential oil, not even at the dose of 60 μL, while it was higher at 120 μL, probably due to a lower capacity of movement of the insects treated with this dose and/or the oil’s direct or indirect effects on the insects. Basil and citronella oils exhibited similar patterns of insecticidal activity over the insect, both directly in adult insects or indirectly over bean seeds. These essential oils affected the development of A. obtectus since the greatest doses applied on beans decreased the emergence of the bean weevil. The results prove the insecticidal capacity of the tested essential oils and hence their potential as active substances against A. obtectus in environmentally low risk pest control strategies. Supplementary trials should be conducted under real storage conditions.</text>

The study applied the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale to a sample of 363 households. Anthropometric assessment was performed on 534 adolescents from 10 to 19 years of age. A Poisson model was used in the multiple regression analysis. The results showed 23.1% prevalence of moderate to severe food insecurity, suggesting association with the following: low income, poor sanitation, head of household born in Mato Grosso State, and the adolescent's race (black). The results emphasize the need for improved access to basic sanitation, training of human resources to generate employment/income, and educational activities to improve understanding of food insecurity and its determinants.</text>

FOOD INSECURITY IN MAPUTO CITY IN 2008 AND 2014 ABSTRACT This study is based on comparing the results of the study undertook by AFSUN in 2008 and the data collected in this dissertation. It as objectives to characterize the levels of food insecurity in Maputo City for the years 2008 and 2014, to determine the values of indicators to assess the trend of food insecurity levels in Maputo City for the years 2008 and 2014 and compare the levels of Food Insecurity 2008 with 2014. The research used the quantitative method 'research survey' recommended by Fonseca (2002, p. 37) and Denise and Gerhardt (2009, p. 37-39) using a questionnaire as a data collection tool. It was done a survey to collect data on 473 Households (HH) selected by sample. They were selected HH of Municipal Districts (MD) of KaMpfumo, KaMaxaqueni, KaLhamanculo, KaMubukwane and KaMavota. To ensure the comparability of results it was selected in each MD, the same proportion of households compared to the sample done by AFSUN in 2008. In the analysis and interpretation of data, we used the following indicators, (which were taken as analytical variables), which allows to measure and to assess the degree of food insecurity during the month prior to the survey) HFIAS and HFIAP indicator. The results processed using the SPSS, showed that the level of tabulated values of the points (scores) of HFIAS range of HH is on average 3.9% and also show a 'fall' sharper values in the HFIAS average, compared to the value recorded in the study in 2008. On the other hand, were taken, individually, the answers given on the food insecurity situation in the four months preceding the survey for which a comparison between the results of studies done in 2008 and in 2014 shows a trend of some improvement of Food Insecurity levels of respondents HH, noting that only about 18.4% of respondents HH 'had concerns about not having enough food in the last four weeks' and only about 16.7% of them were unable to eat the kind of food preferred by lack of financial resources to acquire them. Overall, the results suggest that there was a trend towards improved levels of food insecurity of households surveyed, compared to the results of the study in 2008.
