Hard ticks are blood-sucking ectoparasites of Ixodidae family. These mites have been always considered disrupting agents of livestock systems, where they are recognized as the cause of economic and production losses. However, their ecological role is important for the dynamic equilibrium of the production systems bovine meat or milk. Knowing their biolog y and ecolog y can shed light on the sanitary decisions made in relation to these organisms. This review article presents issues related to classification, characteristics, and life cycle of hard ticks and relations vector-parasite-host. In addition, it addresses the control of ectoparasites on conventional livestock systems and the implica-tions that these models of intervention might have on agro-ecosystem.

Dentro de la teoría de las ciencias ambientales, se ha dicho que ellas tienen como propósito lograr la sostenibilidad de diferentes sistemas de referencia. El objetivo de la presente investigación es determinar los planteamientos que existen alrededor de la sostenibilidad y su lugar dentro de la teoría agroecológica. Se realizó una revisión sistemática en bases de datos científicas y se complementó con revistas especializadas y libros del campo de la agroecología. Se encontró, que la agroecología plantea como objetivo la sostenibilidad, pero no se presenta claridad en el sistema de referencia, proponiendo los agroecosistemas, los sistemas alimentarios, la agricultura, el desarrollo y el desarrollo rural.

The concept of health is a social construction defined by the historical-cultural contexts of societies. At the moment, this context is characterized by global challenges such as climate change, energy crisis, the north-south divide, and poverty, among others. In view of these challenges, sustainable development has emerged as a proposal to cope with these drawbacks of the Western development model. In this sense, it is plausible to suppose, in accordance with a new global scenario of sustainable development, that a new conception of health is also emerging. For that reason, this paper aims at identifying this renewed concept of health, together with related concepts which are mentioned in the official documents on sustainable development originated in the world summits. Despite the fact that the concepts of health and sustainable development have been understood as being equivalent, none of the aforementioned official documents has provided societies with an explicit concept of health. It was verified that the concept of health has been associated with that of need satisfaction and preservation of ecosystems, whereas the construct of illness is associated with the concepts of poverty and high consumption levels. Finally, it is concluded that health is an intermediate goal of sustainable development and not an end in itself.El concepto de salud es una construcción social definida por los contextos histórico-culturales de las sociedades. Actualmente, dicho contexto está caracterizado por problemas como el cambio climático, la crisis energética, los desequilibrios norte-sur, y la pobreza, entre otros, que llevaron al surgimiento del desarrollo sostenible como una propuesta para afrontar estos defectos del modelo de desarrollo occidental. En ese sentido, es plausible suponer que en el marco de este escenario global con el surgimiento del desarrollo sostenible también esté emergiendo una nueva concepción de la salud. Por esa razón, en este trabajo nos propusimos identificar el concepto de salud, y los conceptos asociados a ésta, que se encuentran en los documentos oficiales del desarrollo sostenible que han surgido en las diferentes cumbres mundiales. Aunque se pudo inferir que los conceptos de salud y desarrollo sostenible son equivalentes, en ninguno de estos documentos se encontró un concepto explícito de salud. Así mismo, se observó que el concepto de salud está asociado con el de satisfacción de necesidades y cuidado de los ecosistemas, mientras que el de enfermedad está asociado a los conceptos de pobreza y elevados niveles de consumo. Finalmente, se concluye que la salud es un objetivo intermedio del desarrollo sostenible y no un fin en sí mismo.

Although Tropidurus is a widely distributed lizard genus in South America and the Galapagos Islands, studies on space use and spatial distribution are scarce. We studied the home range structure of the saxicolous lizard Tropidurus torquatus based on the inland population of a rock outcrop in Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil. Lizards were individually marked and observed during reproductive and non-reproductive seasons. Using the mínimum convex polygon method, we found that average total range size of males during the reproductive season was larger than that of females, and that both had similar total range sizes in the non-reproductive season. The harmonic mean method showed that males have a larger home range size than that of females during both seasons. As expected for a polygynous species, the average number of males whose total ranges overlapped those of females tended to be higher in the reproductive season than in the non-reproductive season. Intrasexually, the number of females whose total ranges were associated with those of other females was also higher in the reproductive season than in the non-reproductive season. For males, this number remained low in both seasons, suggesting that males use more exclusive areas, whereas the smaller total ranges of females apparently sustain a higher density of individual s during the reproductive season. Frequency of microhabitat use in relation to vegetation increased in the non-reproductive season and the activity patterns of lizards shifted from bimodal in the reproductive season (rainy period) to unimodal in the non-reproductive season (dry period). Thus, the range structure, microhabitat use, and activity patterns of the T. torquatus observed here were all influenced by the time frame affecting their spatial ecology.Aunque Tropidurus es un género de lagarto extensamente distribuido en Sudamérica y en las islas Galápagos, son escasos los estudios sobre uso del espacio y distribución espacial. En este trabajo se estudió la organización espacial del lagarto saxícola Tropidurus torquatus basado en la población interiorana de uno afloramiento rocoso en el estado de Minas Gerais, sudeste del Brasil. Los lagartos fueron individualmente marcados y observados durante las estaciones reproductiva y no reproductiva. Con el método del mínimo polígono convexo fue encontrado que el tamaño promedio del dominio vital de los machos durante la estación reproductiva fue más grande que el de las hembras y en la estación no reproductiva hembras y machos mantuvieron dominios vitales similares en el tamaño. El método de la media armónica mostró que el tamaño promedio del area de vida de machos fue mayor que el area de las hembras en ambas estaciones. Como esperado para una especie poligínica, el número medio de machos con dominios vitales sobrepuestos a los de las hembras tendió a ser más grande en la estación reproductiva. Intrasexualmente, el número de hembras con sus dominios vitales asociados a los de otras hembras también fue mayor en la estación reproductiva. Para los machos, este número permaneció bajo en ambas estaciones, lo que sugiere que los machos usan areas más exclusivas, mientras los dominios vitales más pequeños de las hembras al parecer sostengan una mayor densidad de individuos durante la estación reproductiva. La frecuencia de uso de los microhábitats relacionados a la vegetación aumentó en la estación no reproductiva y el padrón de actividad de los lagartos cambió del bimodal en la estación reproductiva (período lluvioso) para unimodal en la no reproductiva (período seco). Así la organización espacial, la utilización de los microhábitats y los padrones de actividad de T. torquatus aquí observados fueron todos influenciados por el período de tiempo afectando la ecología espacial de los lagartos.

The sample was tested by the Cayuga Health Systems laboratory as part of New York State's travel testing guidance and was sequenced at Cornell University after testing positive.

Esta es una investigación que se realizó durante el año 2017 en el campus universitario. El problema identificado aludía a la influencia de la ecología cultural en el entorno académico de los estudiantes de la facultad de Antropología de la Universidad Nacional del Centro del Perú, es decir, de qué manera ellos se adaptan socioculturalmente a su medio ambiente, cuáles son las estrategias que aplican cotidianamente y cómo es su relación con su medio ambiente natural y social. A partir de esto, el objetivo planteado fue analizar las manifestaciones de la ecología sociocultural practicada por los jóvenes universitarios de la facultad de Antropología en directa interacción con su entorno natural y social mediante la aplicación de su cultura. El aporte de este estudio es conocer la forma como los estudiantes resuelven sus dificultades sociales y ambientales a partir de la práctica de sus saberes individuales. El presente estudio, más que una investigación etnográfica, solo pretende ser una investigación explorativa. El método de campo fue el etnográfico, poniendo especial énfasis en la observación participante respaldada con técnicas audiovisuales y cuantitativas como la encuesta. El universo de la investigación consideró a los estudiantes de la facultad de Antropología, cuyo total aproximado fue de 370. Un primer resultado observado es que los estudiantes constituyen un grupo poblacional urbano, académicamente formado por una diversidad etaria y social, así como biológica y cultural muy plural. Diversas labores agrícolas pueden ser conducentes a fatiga o desencadenantes de enfermedades en el agricultor. Para la asistencia de estas tareas, se ha empleado la robótica como una posibilidad para minimizar los inconvenientes mencionados. Considerando lo anterior, la Universidad Militar Nueva Granada diseñó y construyó un robot llamado CERES, el cual realiza labores de remoción de maleza, fumigación, entre otros. Para que CERES pueda movilizarse en los cultivos siguiendo una trayectoria deseada, se debe asegurar el desplazamiento del robot con una velocidad traslacional y orientación específica, la cual se garantiza mediante el uso de controladores. El presente artículo muestra el diseño e implementación de controladores PID, para el seguimiento de la velocidad lineal y orientación, asegurando cumplir los tiempos de estabilización cuando el error tiende a cero, usando el criterio de SSV (Steady State Value), y señales de control admisibles por el Hardware del robot.

Una de las funciones principales de la biotecnología ambiental es ocuparse del estudio de comunidades microbianas que proveen servicios esenciales para la sociedad. Más allá de las similitudes que presenta con la microbiología industrial y la agrícola, la biotecnología ambiental presenta peculiaridades, tales como los objetivos de proceso, las características de la biomasa y el tipo y modo de alimentación (sustratos), que la distinguen claramente de las otras disciplinas relacionadas. En este artículo se reseñan recientes avances en la ecología microbiana, la ecofisiología, la genómica y la ingeniería de procesos, para ilustrar cómo la integración de los nuevos conocimientos permite superar las limitaciones del análisis microbiológico clásico para entender, predecir y optimizar el funcionamiento de los procesos de tratamiento de efluentes.One of the main functions of environmental biotechnology is to address the study of microbial communities that provide essential services to society. Beyond the similarities with industrial and agricultural microbiology, the unique features exhibited by environmental biotechnology, such as process objectives, biomass characteristics and type and mode of feeding (substrates), allow a clear distinction from the other related disciplines. Recent advances in microbial ecology, ecophysiology, genomics and process engineering are herein reviewed to illustrate how the integration of the new knowledge can help overcome the shortcomings of classic microbiological analyses to understand, predict and optimize the performance of wastewater treatment.

El cambio climático es una realidad que afronta la humanidad, un asunto del presente y del futuro, no se trata de una predicción, es quizás el más grande reto que la humanidad debe afrontar en su propósito de continuar habitando este planeta, sin distingo entre países pobres ni ricos y tampoco entre clases sociales. Ante esta realidad, surge la adaptación como la medida más eficaz para contrarrestar los efectos de este fenómeno, la cual requiere el desarrollo de capacidades institucionales y sociales, que permitan articular los esfuerzos de los actores gubernamentales, sociales y económicos. El artículo plantea el abordaje conceptual sobre la adaptación al cambio climático en los contextos internacional, regional y local; se analizan e interpretan las acciones realizadas en la región Costa Atlántica, para determinar la capacidad de adaptación que permita afrontar las situaciones derivadas de dicho cambio y se indagan las posibilidades en materia de adaptación. Climate change is a reality facing humanity, a subject of the present and the future, is not a prediction, it is perhaps the greatest challenge that mankind is facing in its efforts to continue living in this world, without distinction between countries poor nor rich, nor between social classes. Given this reality, the most effective adaptation to counteract the effects of this phenomenon, which requires the development of institutional and social capabilities that enable joint efforts of government, as social and economic actors, arises. The article presents the conceptual approach on adaptation to climate change at the international, regional and local contexts; analyzed and interpreted the actions in the Atlantic Coast region, to determine the adaptability which to cope with situations arising from the change and investigate possibilities for adaptation.
