A utilização da Escala Brasileira de Insegurança Alimentar (Ebia) em estudos populacionais no Brasil tem sido estimulada para avaliar a situação de insegurança alimentar (IA), bem como sua associação com indicadores sociais e nutricionais na nossa população. Este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a associação de IA e indicadores antropométricos de crianças menores de 30 meses em Campos Elíseos/Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. Trata-se de estudo transversal de base populacional, com amostra de 1.085 domicílios, sendo 402 famílias com crianças. A coleta de dados foi realizada de maio a dezembro de 2005. Foram estudados indicadores socioeconômicos e utilizados indicadores antropométricos - peso-idade (P/I), estatura-idade (E/I), peso-estatura (P/E) - para avaliar o estado nutricional. A associação entre as variáveis independente e dependente foi estimada aplicando-se o teste qui-quadrado e o modelo de regressão logística multinomial univariado. A associação entre as medidas antropométricas e IA foi avaliada por meio de modelo de regressão linear univariada. Encontrou-se IA em 72% dos domicílios. Cerca de 80% das famílias apresentaram renda familiar mensal per capita inferior a dois terços do salário mínimo. Na análise por regressão logística multinomial, a ausência de saneamento básico e o baixo nível socioeconômico associaram-se a IA moderada e grave, enquanto a presença de aglomerado familiar relacionou-se com IA grave. Renda familiar mensal per capita e escolaridade da pessoa de referência da família associaram-se inversamente com todos os níveis de IA. A insegurança alimentar apresentou associação linear e negativa com escore-z para P/I (p=0,012) e P/E (p=0,05). Este estudo conclui que IA estimada pela Ebia associou-se tanto aos fatores socioeconômicos como à desnutrição infantil. La asociación entre las medidas antropométricas e IA fue evaluada por medio del modelo de regresión lineal univariada. Se encontró IA en el 72% de los hogares. Cerca del 80% de las familias presentaron un ingreso familiar mensual per cápita inferior a los dos tercios del salario mínimo. En el análisis por regresión logística multinomial, la ausencia de saneamiento básico y el bajo nivel socioeconómico se asociaron a una IA moderada y grave, mientras que la presencia de aglomerado familiar se relacionó con una IA grave. El ingreso familiar mensual per cápita y la escolaridad de la persona de referencia de la familia se asociaron inversamente con todos los niveles de IA. La inseguridad alimentaria presentó una asociación lineal y negativa con escore-z para P/I (p=0,012) y P/E (p=0,05). Este estudio concluye que la IA estimada por la Ebia se asoció tanto a los factores socioeconómicos como a la desnutrición infantil. Los resultados sugieren la importancia de la adopción de políticas públicas con el objetivo de minimizar las diferencias sociales, así como la situación de IA y hambre en la población estudiada.The Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale has been valuable in demographic studies in Brazil for evaluating the situation of food insecurity and its association with social and nutritional indicators in the country's population. This present study was carried to evaluate the association of food insecurity with anthropometric indicators of children under 30 months of age in the Campos Eliseos neighborhood of the city of Duque de Caxias, in the greater Rio de Janeiro region. It was a demographically based cross-section study on a sample of 1,085 households, 402 of which consisted of families with children. The data was gathered between May and December of 2005. Socioeconomic indicators were studied and anthropometric indicators (age-weight and age-height) were used to appraise the subjects' nutritional state. The association between the independent and dependent variables was determined by applying the Q-square test and the multinomial-univariate logistics regression model. The association between the anthropometric data and food insecurity was determined by a linear univariate regression model. Food insecurity was found in 72% of the households, and approximately 80% of the families showed monthly family per capita income lower than two thirds of the already low minimum wage. In the analysis by multinomial logistics regression, the lack of basic water supply and sanitation and the low socioeconomic level were associated with moderate and serious food insecurity, whereas the presence of agglomerated families was related to serious food insecurity. Monthly per capita family income and the educational level of the reference person in the family were inversely associated with all levels of food insecurity. Food insecurity presented a linear and negative association with score-z for age-weight (p = 0.012) and for height-weight (p = 0.05). This study concludes that food insecurity as measured by the Ebia is associated with both socioeconomic factors and child malnutrition. The findings suggest the importance of establishing public policies aimed at minimizing social differences and the situation of food insecurity and hunger in the population studied.

Introducción: Experimentar inseguridad alimentaria determina consecuencias negativas en la nutrición, salud y bienestar general de los adultos mayores y sus familias. En Chile prácticamente no existe información al respecto, a pesar de ser un importante problema de salud pública en otros países de la región. Objetivos: Determinar la prevalencia de inseguridad alimentaria y su relación con factores sociodemográficos, económicos y nutricionales en Adultos Mayores residentes en comunas del nivel socioeconómico medio-bajo y bajo del Gran Santiago. Materiales y métodos: Estudio observacional transversal en 344 adultos mayores de 65 a 74 años; encuesta socioeconómica, demográfica, nutricional y de inseguridad alimentaria en el hogar (HFIAS). Se determinó prevalencia de inseguridad alimentaria y su relación con las variables independientes por modelos de regresión logística multivariados. Resultados: El 40,4% de muestra presentaba inseguridad alimentaria (95% IC 35,2-45,6%), predominantemente de tipo leve, con una proporción mayor en mujeres, en el límite de la significación estadística. La probabilidad de percibir inseguridad alimentaria se asoció significativamente con bajos ingresos familiares (OR 4,2 IC 2,1-8,6), con mayor número de personas en el hogar (OR 2,4), malnutrición por déficit o exceso (OR 2,0), no ser propietario de la vivienda (OR 2,0) y menores ingresos personales (OR 1,8). Conclusiones: Existe una alta prevalencia de inseguridad alimentaria en esta población, la que se asocia con variables sociodemográficas, económicas y nutricionales. La seguridad alimentaria es un importante tema de salud pública y nutrición en el país, que debe ser investigado en mayor profundidad.

Introducción: La inseguridad alimentaria es una problemática en aumento en los últimos años en Argentina y resulta un indicador clave del estado de salud de la población. Este estudio se propuso determinar su prevalencia en una población del conurbano bonaerense planteándose como objetivos secundarios: 1) evaluar variables que se asocien con la inseguridad alimentaria; 2) realizar la validación estadística provisional de la Escala de la Inseguridad Alimentaria basada en la Experiencia (FIES). Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de investigación descriptivo, de corte transversal. Se utilizó la encuesta FIES en personas mayores de 15 años del Barrio Santa María en el Bajo Boulogne, partido de San Isidro, provincia de Buenos Aires. Se realizó un muestreo probabilístico. Se analizaron los datos siguiendo el modelo Rasch propuesto por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura. Resultados: Se entrevistaron 222 personas hallando una prevalencia de inseguridad alimentaria moderada/severa de 47,29% y severa de 6,57%. Se observó una asociación independiente con una jefatura de hogar femenina OR 2,22; (IC95% 1,27 a 3,87) y con tener más de 4 convivientes en el hogar OR 2,24; (IC95% 1,25 a 4,02). Se realizó la validación provisional de la encuesta FIES en nuestra muestra a través del testeo de las asunciones del modelo Rasch. Conclusión: la inseguridad alimentaria es un problema presente en nuestra población. Se realizó la validación de un instrumento para medirla, de sencilla aplicación y que permite realizar comparaciones válidas entre mediciones locales e internacionales.

El objetivo de este estudio fue describir el nivel de seguridad alimentaria percibida en los hogares de la ciudad de Santa Fe, Argenttina, en el año 2011. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, de corte transversal, incluyendo 592 hogares que integran el Panel de Hogares del Observatorio Social de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral. Los hogares se caracterizaron sociodemográficamente, se los clasificó según el nivel de seguridad alimentaria, aplicando la Escala Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Seguridad Alimentaria y se determinó su asociación, mediante odds ratio y regresión logística, con factores sociodemográficos. Se halló que el 31,5% de los hogares santafesinos presenta inseguridad alimentaria, de los cuales el 21,7% es leve, el 7,4% moderada y el 2,4% severa, incrementándose cuando conviven menores. La inseguridad alimentaria se asoció positivamente con no poseer cobertura de salud, actividad económica, capacidad de ahorro ni el secundario completo y con la existencia de cuatro o más integrantes en el hogar.

MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Entre noviembre y diciembre de 2000, en los condados californianos de Solano y San Joaquín, se efectuaron cuatro grupos focales, con 30 adultos de origen latinoamericano residentes allí. Los comentarios de los participantes fueron codificados por dos investigadores para determinar los temas principales, y fueron confrontados para verificar su convergencia. RESULTADOS: Las preguntas fueron bien comprendidas, no percibiéndose como ofensivas. El marco conceptual se confirmó como 'proceso manejado' con diferentes niveles de severidad. Las causas de inseguridad alimentaria identificadas fueron: desempleo, alto costo de algunos alimentos y falta de información nutricional. La necesidad de educación nutricional fue una constante. CONCLUSIONES: Para interpretar datos nacionales de inseguridad alimentaria en latinoamericanos es esencial considerar su percepción particular de ese fenómeno.

CONCLUSIONES: Para interpretar datos nacionales de inseguridad alimentaria en latinoamericanos es esencial considerar su percepción particular de ese fenómeno.OBJECTIVE: To assess the perception and experience with food insecurity among Latinos living in California, as well as their interpretation of the items included in the Food Security Scale. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A series of four focus groups were carried out among 30 adults of Latin-American descent living in California. The participant's responses were coded by two researchers to identify the main issues, and to compare them for assessing their convergence. RESULTS: The items were well understood and were not perceived as offensive. The conceptual framework was confirmed as a 'managed process' with different severity levels. The causes of food insecurity were: unemployment, high cost of some food items, and lack of nutritional information. The demand for nutritional education was constant. CONCLUSION: Interpreting data on food insecurity in Latinos requires proper consideration of their particular perceptions.

En torno al proceso de alimentación humana hay cuatro pilares básicos: producción, acceso, inocuidad y calidad nutritiva de los alimentos; si alguno falla, da lugar a lo que se denomina inseguridad alimentaria y esta situación tiene un efecto directo en la calidad de vida de las personas. El objetivo de este trabajo fue dar respuesta a la pregunta: ¿cuáles son los principales hallazgos en torno a la inseguridad alimentaria en México, publicados en los últimos 14 años y realizados bajo metodología cualitativa? Método: se presenta una revisión sistemática cuya búsqueda de artículos se realizó en las bases de datos Springer Link, Redalyc y Google Académico, con combinaciones de palabras en español e inglés (inseguridad alimentaria, seguridad alimentaria, estudios cualitativos, método cualitativo, México) y que hubiesen sido publicados en el periodo 2006-2020. Un total de diez trabajos de investigación fueron localizados y la información se organizó a partir de diferentes ejes temáticos que permitieron identificar método y técnicas utilizadas, así como hallazgos relacionados con percepciones, experiencias y prácticas de alimentación de las personas, e información de estrategias de respuesta ante la inseguridad alimentaria, entre otros. Se discuten estos hallazgos a la luz de las implicaciones cotidianas para las personas de estudio y en vinculación a la calidad de vida en México.

In August 2001, the XVII Meeting of the Health Sector in Central America and the Dominican Republic (RESSCAD) was held in Managua, Nicaragua. At the meeting, a resolution was adopted in support of strengthening and furthering the Central American initiative for the Promotion of Food and Nutritional Security. This paper examines the conceptual framework behind the initiative, which was approved by the XIV Central American Presidents Summit Meeting (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and launched in 1994 at the regional, national, and municipal levels (Guacimo, Costa Rica, 1994). It focuses on the accomplishments attributable to this initiative, the challenges it has faced over 2001 and those it will be facing over the next biennium, and the measures taken or recommended so far in order to ensure its long-term success.
