The aim of this work was to evaluate the quality of the looseleaf lettuce group, cv. Vera, in organic, conventional and hydroponic crop in Rio Branco, Acre State, North Brazil. The experiment was carried out in July 2009, at the Universidade Federal do Acre. The samples of the conventional and hydroponic (three trademarks) systems were obtained randomly in supermarkets in Rio Branco, in the same day of harvest of the lettuce produced in the organic system. The organic lettuce grown in the experimental area was cultivated in a greenhouse, under no-tillage and mulching of bamboo leaves, and fertilized with organic compost (17 t/ha on a dry base). The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and four replications composed of three plants each. The samples were washed, cut and processed, including leaves and stems to obtain the juice and soon after the soluble solids contents and the concentration of nitrate and ascorbic acid were determined. The three trademarks of hydroponic lettuce had higher nitrate content and lower concentration of soluble solids and ascorbic acid, while the organic lettuce had higher quality, with low concentration of nitrate and higher ascorbic acid content.</text>

The quality of poultry manure composts obtained from composting heaps were evaluated, in the following treatments: 1) without gypsum and turning; 2) without gypsum and with turning; 3) with gypsum and turning; 4) with gypsum and without turning. The quality of composts was evaluated with the Department of Agricultural (DA) standards established to the occurrence of eggs and grubs of helminthes, Salmonella sp, fecal and total coliforms, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Se, C, N, humidity, C:N and C:CEC rations, and pH. The quality of composts from the turned heaps agrees with the DA standards, except the C content, which was lower. In the composts obtained from heaps with gypsum addition and without turner, the content of this element was higher than the minimum required but the values of N, eggs of helminthes, and water content did not meet the DA standards. The metal content of the composts was low, with the exception of Cd, but it was due to the high content of this metal in the manure used to make the gypsum heaps. This additive decreased the pH value of the composts and increased the N content of the no turned heaps. Considering all evaluated attributes, the best composts were obtained from the turned heaps.</text>

The quality of lettuce seedlings depending on substrates and biofertilizer addition (at 6; 12 and 18 days after germination), under greenhouse conditions was evaluated. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized factorial scheme: 3 cultivars (Babá-de-Verão, Grand Rapids and Great Lakes) x 3 substrates (washed sand, organic compost and commercial substrate Plantmax®) x 2 (with and without biofertilizer addition), with four replications. The evaluation was done on 24-day old seedlings through number of leaves, shoot height, root length, shoot dry mass and root dry mass. There was an isolated effect for cultivars and substrates with regard to the number of leaves and root length. There was cultivars x substrates interaction effect for shoot height, shoot dry mass and root dry mass. The best result was obtained with cultivar Grands Rapids grown in organic compost. There were no significant effects of biofertilizer addition with respect to the evaluated variables.</text>

<text>The mango tree (var. Maranhão) is a fruit of great relevance in regions with semiarid climate. However, knowledge about the effect of salinity on seedling growth is still incipient. The seedling formation phase is of great importance for the establishment of vigorous plants in the field. Therefore, the research was conducted with the objective of evaluating the mango (var. Maranhão) seedlings irrigated with different saline levels in substrate with and without bovine biofertilizer. The experiment was installed in the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia da Paraíba, Campus Picuí, in a randomized block design with four replications, in a 6 x 2 factorial arrangement, corresponding to six levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0,5; 2,0; 3,5; 5,0; 6,5 and 8,0 dS m-1), on substrates without and with bovine biofertilizer. The substrate was obtained from a mixture of soil and part of bovine manure in a 2: 1 ratio. The bovine biofertilizer was obtained, 30 days before sowing, from the aerobic fermentation of fresh manure. The dry mass of the leaf was affected as a consequence of the increase of the salinity in the soil solution and, consequently, the decrease of the availability and the absorption of water. However, in the treatments with bovine biofertilizer, the leaf dry mass was significantly higher in relation to the soil without the organic input. It was verified that the differences between the values of the plants cultivated in substrates with biofertilizer surpassed those of plants cultivated in substrates without biofertilizer. It is concluded that the increase in saline levels of water used for irrigation impairs the growth of mango trees (var. Maranhão), mainly after 3,5 dS m -1 of electrical conductivity and that the use of the bovine liquid biofertilizer promotes the formation of seedlings of better quality, with higher growth and accumulation of dry mass.</text>
