<text>Various abiotic and biotic factors may determine the spatial distribution patterns of Cladocera in a lake. The aim of this study was to examine the horizontal distribution of Cladocera in a lake connected to a river during low and high water phases and the abiotic factors that determine variation in their populations. Microcrustaceans were collected in integrated samples at 40 sites distributed on a lake. The mean abundance of Cladocera was around five times higher in the low water phase than in the high water phase. Only populations of Bosmina hagmanni Stingelin, 1904 and Bosminopsis deitersi Richard, 1895 predominated in the low water phase, while in the high water phase, B. hagmanni, Ceriodaphnia cornuta f. rigaudi (Sars, 1896) Diaphanosoma spinulosum Herbst, 1975 and Moina micrura Kurz, 1875 predominated at some sampling stations. The majority of cladoceran species showed an aggregated distribution in the low water phase, except B. longirostris and D. fluviatile and, B. longirostris, the only ones which presented a uniform distribution pattern in the high water phase. Most of the aggregates of cladoceran species predominated in both the dry and rainy periods on the east side of the lake due to intense easterly wind. Some cladoceran populations formed isolate aggregates in other parts of the lake and near the lake-river connection site. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that the variables phosphorus, nitrogen and suspended matter (eutrophic conditions) determined distinct patterns of horizontal distribution in some cladoceran populations at some stations in the low water phase, while in others, the patterns of horizontal distribution were determined by environmental conditions as alkalinity, pH, oxygen, depth and water transparency. In the high water phase, CCA revealed that phosphorus and water transparency were positive determining factors in the distribution of some cladoceran species, while alkalinity, depth and suspended matter were negative. Our study showed that the distribution of cladoceran species may vary somewhat between the two distinct water phases depending on the micro-scale variation patterns of environmental factors.</text>

<text>The municipalities of Vale do Ribeira have the lowest rates of human development in the state of São Paulo. The main productive activity of the territory, banana farming, has a significant effect on the indicator that evaluates the generation of income in these municipalities. In this context, the article aims to emphasize the understanding of the so-called 'conventional banana market', trying to demonstrate how as the performance of intermediary agents in this market imposes limits on the generation of income in family agriculture. For this, six managers of producer organizations and 38 banana producers from the municipalities of Miracatu and Sete Barras. The presence of local individual intermediates and large wholesale companies was identified. It was found that wholesale companies have the economic power to influence and determine the prices paid to the producer, which in general is considered low because it significantly restricts the profitability of the farmers interviewed. In addition, it should be noted that local intermediaries established relationships with producers that created other disadvantages, notably default. It is concluded that the commercialization of bananas in the conventional market by means of intermediates inhibits possibilities of economic development of these farmers and, consequently, of the whole territory of the Vale do Ribeira dependent on the commercialization of these fruits.</text>

<text>This article analyzes different aspects related to actors and institutions responsible for the existence of three major public projects for payment for water conservation services. Moreover, this study regards to what extent these projects contribute to recognize and value the multifunctionality of family farming. For such purpose, a case study of the following projects was carried out: ProdutorES de Água (Espírito Santo), Conservador das Águas (Minas Gerais) and Projeto Piloto (São Paulo). In these cases, project makers, managers and implementers were interviewed. The origins of these projects showed that they derived from the presence of three main elements technical, political interest and financial support. The existence of these elements was made possible due to the work of different technical actors, politicians and partners. The interests that moved their actions were focused on political and institutional visibility, the environmental expertise accumulation and aimed at forest restoration, as well as being the main results achieved by the projects. Although the actors aimed to recognize, encourage and support farmers by and for environmental conservation, that was not the perspective that motivated actors. Thus, in addition to social, economic and cultural dimensions of the rural population being largely ignored, with the privilege of strictly environmental dimension; the latter also seems to have not been treated properly. Nevertheless, significant institutional results achieved allow us to explain the deep engagement of actors to undertake such projects.</text>
