The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of respiratory viruses in the lower airways of individuals undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation, with and without acute lower respiratory infection (respectively WRI and WORI groups). Methods We studied 44 mini-bronchoalveolar lavage samples (collected with a double catheter, Combicath® kit) from patients with mean age in the seventh decade, 20 from WORI group and 24 from WRI group, who were hospitalized for acute respiratory failure in Intensive Care Units of two hospitals in the Lisbon area. Real-time PCR was applied to verify analyse the presence of 15 common respiratory viruses (adenovirus, human bocavirus, influenza virus A and B, repiratory syncytial virus, human parainfluenza virus types 1, 2, 3 and 4, human enterovirus, human rhinovirus, human metapneumovirus, human coronavirus group 1 (229E, NL63) and 2 (OC43, HKU1). Results Respiratory viruses were detected in six of the 20 patients in the WORI group: influenza AH3 (n = 2), parainfluenza virus 1/3 (n = 2), human rhinovirus (n = 2), respiratory syncytial virus (n = 1) and human metapneumovirus (n = 1). In the WRI group, respiratory viruses were detected in 12 of the 24 patients: influenza AH3 (n = 3), human rhinovirus (n = 3), respiratory syncytial virus (n = 3), human metapneumovirus (n = 3), human bocavirus (n = 2) and human enterovirus (n = 1). Simultaneous detection of two viruses was recorded in two samples in both groups. Conclusions The results of this study suggest the presence of common respiratory viruses in the lower respiratory tract without causing symptomatic infection, even in carefully collected lower samples. This may have important implications on the interpretation of the results on the diagnostic setting. Se consideró como una p estadísticamente significativa a valores menores a 0,05. Resultados: Se incluyó a 147 individuos, el 59,9% (88/147) de los encuestados fue de género femenino, los encuestados fueron divididos en dos grupos, adulto joven y adulto maduro, de acuerdo a un rango de edad, donde el 46,26% pertenecían al grupo adulto joven y 53,74% al grupo adulto maduro. El 39,46% (58/147) refirieron dolor antes de un cambio meteorológico. De los pacientes que manifestaron dolor, 32 pacientes refierieron dolor en la rodilla 55,5 % manifestó como zona de dolor más frecuente la rodilla. No se constató una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la presencia del dolor previo a el cambio meteorológico específico (i.e. la variación de temperatura o la presencia de lluvia). Sin embargo, se observó una asociación entre la presencia de dolor previo al cambio de temperatura y el grupo etario de adulto maduro (p=0.008, OR= 0.398 IC= 0.200-0.792). No se constató asociación entre la presencia del dolor y otras características clínicas referidas por los encuestados. Conclusión: Se encontró que la mayoría de los encuestados del grupo de adulto mayor percibe dolor en las articulaciones previo a un cambio meteorológico. Con mayor frecuencia el grupo de adulto maduro manifiesta algún dolor; a diferencia del grupo adulto joven que en su mayoría no presenta dolor previo al cambio climático. Since early 1980s, pulmonary rehabilitation has been acknowledged as a comprehensive intervention with hundreds of studies being performed over the past thirty years demonstrating its benefits on multiple outcomes; nevertheless, there are still multiple unresolved challenges, and new ones are currently emerging, with the COVID-19 outbreak now in the spotlight. In this editorial, these issues are summarized and discussed, while presenting some of the latest findings in research and clinical practice, with the ultimate goal of raising awareness of the future of pulmonary rehabilitation in the post COVID-19 era. The degree of infestation depends on the breed, physiological state and nutrition of the animal and on microclimatic characteristics, which affect the tick life cycle. Diverse studies suggest that given the characteristics of intensive silvopastoral systems (ISS), tick loads within these systems are lower. In this study, the tick loads of grazing animals were monitored for five animal groups: three at an ISS and two at traditional farms located on the Valley of Ibague (Tolima). within the ISS, there were greater tick loads in high production cows (P = 0.026) and a positive relationship (P < 0.05) between milk production and tick load in August sampling. Greater tick counts were also observed in the in San Javier (traditional farm) group compared to all other animal groups. We conclude that the dynamics of ticks is a complex phenomenon affected by many factors, whose association determines the observed tick population at any given time.
