Abundancia de cuatro gremios alimentarios de aves y su uso de plantas en un gradiente ambiental (bosque seco – bosque de encino) mexicano en dos temporadas contrastantes Se hizo una comparación entre la abundancia de cuatro gremios de aves, su preferencia por buscar alimento en distintas plantas y el suministro de alimento proporcionado por éstas. El estudio se llevó a cabo en un gradiente de vegetación que abarca selva baja y bosque de encino en dos estaciones contrastantes -la época seca y la época húmeda- y en dos años consecutivos. Las aves fueron agrupadas, atendiendo a las maniobras de forrajeo y a las plantas preferidas, como: colibríes, papamoscas de follaje, pizcadores de selva y pizcadores de bosque. Para identificar a estos gremios se emplearon clasificaciones y para identificar las variables que pudieran caracterizar a cada uno de éstos, se utilizó un análisis de correspondencia sin tendencia. Se realizaron censos en 67 parcelas de diámetro fijo. En cada parcela se estimó la cobertura de las plantas y se emplearon correlaciones simples para determinar cuales plantas estaban asociadas con las densidades de cada gremio de aves en las distintas estaciones de los dos años. Las preferencias de búsqueda se estimaron por medio de pruebas de bondad de ajuste. La mayoría de las plantas que estuvieron significativamente correlacionadas con los gremios no fueron las preferidas para buscar alimento, salvo en el caso de los colibríes; éstos estuvieron significativamente correlacionadas con Ipomoea wolcottiana, un árbol con flores muy visitado por estas aves. En el otoño, que es la época húmeda, ni los pizcadores de follaje ni los papamoscas (fundamentalmente insectívoros en esta estación) utilizaron las plantas con mayores densidades de artrópodos. Esto podría deberse a que las densidades totales de artrópodos no necesariamente reflejan las presas más utilizadas. Además, las aves podrían tener una preferencia por aquellas plantas con alimento fácilmente accesible y no necesariamente por aquellas con mayor cantidad de alimento. El que las plantas con mayores coeficientes de correlación en los dos años hayan sido similares en las dos estaciones (independientemente del alimento que proporcionan) también sugiere que éstas representan más a los hábitats preferidos que al alimento disponible. En la época seca sólo en el primer año las densidades de los colibríes estuvieron asociadas con las plantas más utilizadas. Los resultados coinciden con otros estudios realizados en selvas bajas, en donde las plantas preferidas están sólo parcialmente correlacionadas con la distribución de las aves.

Las restricciones de la sostenibilidad acerca del uso de insecticidas incluyen los efectos en la salud humana, los ecosistemas agrícolas (ejemplo, los insectos beneficiosos), el medio ambiente, en su sentido más amplio (por ejemplo, las especies que no son el objetivo, paisajes y comunidades) y la selección de los rasgos que confieren la resistencia a los insecticidas. Es posible encontrar ejemplos donde los insecticidas han tenido un impacto desastroso en todas aquellas variables y otros ejemplos donde los peligros que representaban han sido mitigados (por accidente o por diseño). En esta revisión examinamos lo que en la actualidad se puede concluir sobre el impacto de campo directo e indirecto y de largo plazo de los insecticidas en el medio ambiente. Proporcionamos ejemplos específicos, describimos los patrones actuales del uso de insecticidas, consideramos los contextos donde se usan los insecticidas y discutimos el papel de los reglamentos y leyes a fin de mitigar el riesgo. Discutimos cómo el uso de los insecticidas está cambiando como resultado de una mayor conciencia ambiental e inevitablemente, mientras discutimos las principales restricciones del uso de los insecticidas, también sugerimos por qué no se pueden descartar tan fácilmente.

Resumen: El presente artículo de investigación pretende analizar la conflictividad social provocada por el escape de gases tóxicos de empresas petroquímicas, localizadas en cercanías de la localidad de Ingeniero White, en el año 2000. Los reclamos generalizados en torno la salud, el trabajo y el medio ambiente provocaron una politización aguda de la situación entre diversos actores sociales. La lucha política de los vecinos de White implicó la puesta en consideración de diversas modalidades de protesta social, demostrando formas de organización y una serie de respuestas sectoriales de parte del poder político y económico. Palabras claves: conflictividad social, empresas petroquímicas, organizaciones políticas, Ecología Política. Abstract: This research article tries to analyze social conflicts caused by the escape of toxic gases from petrochemical companies located around the town of Ingeniero White, in 2000. The generalized complaints around health, job and the environment caused an acute politicization of the situation among different social actors. The political struggle of residents from White implied to consider various modalities of social protest, showing organization forms and a series of sectoral responses from the political and economical power. Key words: social conflict, petrochemical companies, political organizations, political ecology.

El presente artículo presenta un análisis del proceso de integración de América Latina y el Caribe, su nivel de complejidad, los distintos mecanismos existentes y su importancia para el desarrollo de los países de la región y el bienestar de la población. Para hacerle frente a este desafió, se recurrió en primera medida al análisis histórico (heurístico, crítico y síntesis) de los procesos de integración a nivel de Norte América, Centroamérica, Sur América y el Caribe. La segunda decisión metodológica, implicó estudiar desde la sociología política, la experiencia propia de cada mecanismo de integración; identificando logros, dificultades, retos y perspectivas, frente a la composición geopolítica de la región. Los resultados apuntan a que el proceso de integración latinoamericana y caribeña ha tomado décadas; ha sido un largo proceso con avances y retrocesos. En el proceso de integración se han tenido que superar situaciones difíciles, que provocaron la incorporación de temas como: la desigualdad social, el cambio climático, la seguridad alimentaria, justicia, democracia, participación ciudadana, corrupción.

Estabelecemos a influência exercida pela cobertura vegetal de quatro diferentes biótopos em áreas do Parque Nacional do Iguaçu (PNI) sobre a fauna local de mosquitos. Realizaram-se capturas bimestrais, em isca humana e armadilha Shannon, em três diferentes períodos do dia, em ambiente silvestre e domiciliar, durante 24 meses consecutivos. Dentre os 20.273 espécimes de fêmeas adultas capturadas, pertencentes a 44 espécies, Ochlerotatus serratus (10,3%), Haemagogus leucocelaenus (9,7%), Mansonia titillans (9,6%) e Chagasia fajardoi (8,8%) foram predominantes. Anopheles cruzii, Runchomyia theobaldi, Wyeomyia aporonoma e Wy. confusa ocorreram exclusivamente em áreas com vegetação bem preservada e densa configuração. Culex nigripalpus, Oc. pennai, Oc. serratus, Sabethes purpureus e Sa. albiprivus foram capturados nos três biótopos essencialmente silvestres. Na mata no entorno da represa foram capturadas principalmente An. albitarsis s.l., An. galvaoi, An. evansae, An. fluminensis, Coquillettidia venezuelensis, Cq. juxtamansonia, Wy. quasilongirostris e Onirion personatum. As espécies que apresentaram maiores incidências na área sob ação antrópica foram Ch. fajardoi, Cq. fasciolata, Cq. nitens e Ma. titillans.A study of the mosquito fauna in the Iguaçu National Park focused on population behavior in four biotopes with different types of plant cover inside the Park. Systematic bimonthly diurnal and nocturnal human bait and Shannon trap captures were conducted in both forest and domiciliary environments over the course of 24 months. A total of 20,273 adult mosquito specimens belonging to 44 species were collected: Ochlerotatus serratus (10.3%), Haemagogus leucocelaenus (9.7%), Mansonia titillans (9.6%), and Chagasia fajardoi (8.8%) were the most frequently captured mosquitoes. Anopheles cruzii, Runchomyia theobaldi, Wyeomyia aporonoma, and Wy. confusa were captured almost exclusively in well-preserved areas with dense forest cover. Culex nigripalpus, Oc. pennai, Oc. serratus, Sabethes purpureus, and Sa. albiprivus were captured in three essentially sylvatic biotopes. Species captured in the forest areas around a dam were: An. albitarsis s.l., An. galvaoi, An. evansae, An. fluminensis, Coquillettidia venezuelensis, Cq. juxtamansonia, Wy. quasilongirostris, and Onirion personatum, Ch. fajardoi, Cq. fasciolata, Cq nitens, and Ma. titillans were the most frequently captured species in a residential area.

Este artículo examina la relación entre los conocimientos y la preservaciónde la agrobiodiversidad de agricultores ecológicos del oeste de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Los derechos de propiedad intelectual han tenido efectos directos sobre la producción de semillas. Entre patentes y otras formas de controles, agricultores familiares y actores conexos no aceptan tratar la vida como un «recurso». Este trabajo tiene un doble objetivo: primero, analizar el panorama internacional de la propiedad intelectual sobre la biodiversidad y la producción de conocimientos, y segundo, examinar las acciones de agricultores vinculados con Ecovida —red de agroecología compuesta por agricultores, consumidores y mediadores sociales en el sur del Brasil— para inventar formas alternativas de gestión de los saberes y de semillas «libres». El resultado es una acción paralela de crítica al estrechamiento de la base genética y un esfuerzo por la multiplicación de semillas y saberes por medio de redes y centros de agrobiodiversidad.

La papa china es un cultivo importante para los habitantes de la región Pacífica colombiana, este cultivo posee una dinámica de producción fluctuante con rendimientos promedio por debajo de su potencial. En este trabajo se evaluó el efecto de la aplicación de abono orgánico (gallinaza) y la densidad de siembra en el crecimiento y la producción de papa china en la vereda Zacarías, Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. El diseño experimental consistió en un arreglo de bloques completamente al azar con un arreglo de parcelas divididas, con tres densidades de siembra (100 cm x 50 cm, 60 cm x 60 cm, y 50 cm x 40cm) y tres niveles de fertilización orgánica (alta 3 kg planta-1, media 2 kg planta-1, y baja 1 kg planta-1). Los resultados mostraron que la distancia de siembra es el factor que afecta de manera significativa las variables de desarrollo inicial de las plantas (altura de la planta, número de hojas y circunferencia del tallo). Para las variables de producción (longitud, circunferencia y peso del cormo) se encontró que con la distancia de siembra de 100 cm x 50 cm se obtuvo el mejor desarrollo de producción de cormos, y la dosis de fertilización alta resultó en mejor desarrollo en la producción en las plantas.

El presente trabajo se refiere al estudio del nivel de competitividad de las Agroindustrias del Limón pertenecientes al clúster del limón mexicano en Colima, México en base al modelo del IMD (International Institute for Management Development) como teoría de soporte. En este estudio se diseño y utilizó un instrumento de medición de acuerdo al modelo anteriormente mencionado adaptando las variables para el contexto de nuestro estudio. Es necesario mencionar que el modelo del IMD se utilizó para medir la competitividad de los países y para esta investigación se está generando un instrumento nuevo considerando el entorno de la investigación que son las empresas agroindustriales del limón mexicano en Colima. Esta investigación se orientó a Mipymes de tipo agroindustrial del limón. Posteriormente a través de análisis estadístico se determinó el nivel de competitividad de las mismas y qué variables o criterios son los que influyen significativamente en la competitividad.

Calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals are widespread among plant species. Their functions are not yet completely understood; however, they can provide tolerance against multiple environmental stress factors. Recent evidence suggested that CaOx crystals function as carbon reservoirs since its decomposition provides CO2 that may be used as carbon source for photosynthesis. This might be advantageous in plants with reduced mesophyll conductance, such as the Antarctic plant Colobanthus quitensis, which have shown CO2 diffusion limitations. In this study, we evaluate the effect of two CO2 concentrations in the CaOx crystals decomposition and chlorophyll fluorescence of C. quitensis. Plants were exposed to airflows with 400 ppm and 11.5 ppm CO2 and the number and relative size of crystals, electron transport rate (ETR), and oxalate oxidase (OxO) activity were monitored along time (10 h). Here we showed that leaf crystal area decreases over time in plants with 11.5 ppm CO2, which was accompanied by increased OxO activity and only a slight decrease in the ETR. These results suggested a relation between CO2 limiting conditions and the CaOx crystals decomposition in C. quitensis. Hence, crystal decomposition could be a complementary endogenous mechanism for CO2 supply in plants facing the Antarctic stressful habitat.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi o de avaliar a influência da autocorrelação espacial (ausência de independência estatística de observações obtidas ao longo do espaço geográfico) nos estudos ecológicos. Para tanto, uma avaliação dos trabalhos que empregaram os métodos necessários para a quantificação da autocorrelação espacial foi realizada, utilizando os dados fornecidos pelo “Institute for Scientific Information”. Os resultados demonstraram que existe uma tendência crescente da utilização das análises de autocorrelação espacial em estudos ecológicos, e que a presença de autocorrelação espacial significativa foi detectada na maior parte dos estudos. Além disso, esses estudos foram desenvolvidos em vários países, por cientistas de diferentes nacionalidades, com diferentes grupos de organismos e em diferentes tipos de ecossistemas. Dessa forma, pode-se considerar que o reconhecimento explícito da estrutura espacial dos processos naturais, por meio da análise da autocorrelação espacial, é um novo paradigma dos estudos ecológicosThe aim of this paper was to evaluate the influence of the spatial autocorrelation (absence of independence among observations gathered along geographical space) in ecological studies. For this task, an evaluation of the studies that used spatial autocorrelation analysis was carried out using the data furnished by the Institute for Scientific Information. There is a positive temporal tendency in the number of studies that used spatial autocorrelation analysis. A significant autocorrelation was detected in most studies. Moreover, scientist of several nationalities carried out these studies in different countries, with different organisms and in different types of ecosystems. In this way, it is possible to consider that the explicit incorporation of the spatial structure of natural processes, through the autocorrelation analysis, is a new ecological paradigm
