Organic systems were evaluated for cassava root production directed to human comsumption in natura, at Seropédica-RJ. Treatments consisted of: cassava ('IAC 576-70') in single cropping and its intercropping with corn ('Eldorado'), cowpea ('Mauá') or corn plus cowpea. The organic management was standardized and the experimental area was submitted to artificial irrigation during the period of stay of maize in the system. 'Green' (immature) corn ears were harvested at the 'point' required for fresh marketing and the shoot placed on the ground. The cowpea was included to function as green manure being cut at flowering with residues left on the soil surface. Corn and cowpea were sown between cassava rows, in an alternate design, following the first weeding of the main crop (cassava). The cultivar IAC 576-70 showed suitability with respect to organic management, yielding approximatelu 31 Mg ha-1 of marketable roots. No significant differences were detected between cassava single cropping and any of the intercropping tested systems. Thus, corn crop has considerable potential for additional income to the growers. Yield of 'Eldorado' corn averaged 18.125 ears ha-1 correspponding to 5,1 Mg ha-1. Residues coming from cowpea cutting brought about an input close to 12 Mg ha-1, which meant an expressive contribution in nutrient elements, especially nitrogen (about 44 kg N ha-1). The legume crop, in addition, completely covered cassava inter-rows demonstrating its potential for controlling erosion and weeds. The triple intercropping becomes advantageous considering that corn harvesting would justify irrigation and that inclusion of cowpea meant benefitial effects to the system and did not interfere on cassava yield.</text>

No-tillage systems were evaluated within an eggplant (Solanum melongena) organic management in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro State. Crotalaria juncea and Pennisetum glaucum cv. BRS 1501 were used as pre-plantings besides fallowing, in comparison to conventional system (plowing). Simultaneously, three cropping managements were tested: eggplant single-cropping, intercropping with C. juncea, and intercropping with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata cv. Mauá). No differences were found among planting systems concerning eggplant yield. Crotalaria juncea was more effective than Pennisetum glaucum and fallow for soil mulch. Intercropping with leguminous species did not decrease eggplant yield. In a second study no-tillage (on C. juncea and spontaneous weeds mulchs) and conventional plowing were compared. These treatments were combined with increasing levels of poultry manure (0, 100, 200, and 400 kg ha-1 of N). In terms of biomass input, C. juncea was again superior to spontaneous weeds. Eggplant responded to organic fertilization with maximum productivity (50.6 t ha-1) corresponding to the highest manure level applied, compared to 36.9 t ha-1 for control plots.</text>

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficiency of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) biomass incorporation to the soil as well as the effect of presence or absence of pigeonpea hedgerows on soil fertility and productivity of three vegetables, beet, carrot and dwarf green bean. Samples were randomly taken in a block design with three replications for each crop. In the field, no other fertilization treatment was applied. In plots without biomass incorporation, nitrogen showed negative balance, whereas in the field with biomass incorporation a high positive N-balance was found. Concerning phosphorus, positive balances were determined in plots without biomass incorporation, however, the uptake of P increased significantly after biomass incorporation in all crops used. The results indicate that pigeonpea alley cropping system may represent an advantageous option for organic farmers to maintain or to improve soil fertility.</text>

The objective of this work was to evaluate the grain and aboveground biomass production of six soybean cultivars under organic management. A randomized block design was adopted with four replications per treatment (cultivar). By harvest time, 81 days after plants emergence, all tested cultivars (Celeste, Surubi, Campo Grande, Mandi, Lambari, and Taquari) had excellent nodulation ranging from 545 to 760 mg/plant of nodule mass (dry weight). The cultivars Celeste and Taquari, which yielded 8.33 and 7.12 t ha-1 of dry biomass, respectively, showed other advantageous agronomic characteristics such as: short cycle, a high accumulation of nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) in green tissues, and good seed setting. These traits indicated potential of 'Celeste' and 'Taquari' to be used as green manure summer crops in organic agriculture systems. Five of the cultivars revealed a tendency for lodging, however within acceptable levels. Cultivars Celeste, Surubi, Campo Grande, Mandi, and Taquari exceeded in 23%, 32%, 33%, 44%, and 70%, respectively, the Brazilian soybean grain yield average of 2,398 kg ha-1 of the last three years.</text>

The objective of this work was to evaluate the dynamics of decomposition and release of nutrients from aerial plant parts of the soybean cultivar Celeste used as green manure. A randomized block design was adopted with five replications. Soybean plants were cut close to the soil surface 55, 85 and 115 days after emergency (DAE), and analysed to determine their decomposition and release of N, P, K, Ca and Mg, by placing 60 g of fresh material of the aerial part in nylon screen bags, that were distributed on field plots surface . The rates of loss of dry matter and of nutrient release were monitored in the 5, 10, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days after plant cut. The exponential model X = X0e-kt demonstrated that the dynamics of the material cut in the 55, 85 and 115 DAE were not so contrasting. The climate could have interfered on the results, principally on K release rates, however it did not cause mean differences on the biomass decomposition and N and P release. Soybean plant material from cut plants, at different growth stages, present similar rates of decomposition and nutrient release.</text>
