                <text>The undergraduate general microbiology course-based research projects were disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020. Therefore, we developed a remote online research project that combines aspects of microbiology lectures and laboratory techniques. The project allows students to virtually travel to environmental sites to research different microorganisms. This virtual project successfully replaced the in-person laboratory experience for the duration of the semester. We revised the project with assistance from undergraduate students enrolled in the spring course. Our revised virtual project helps students develop their scientific writing and presentation skills while applying microbiology course and laboratory knowledge. The project is designed to create a more equal and equitable assessment process by including detailed guidelines and rubrics. Projects are easy to implement and can be completed within 5 to 6 weeks. The project will promote students' understanding of the process of scientific research and enrich academic development.</text>

                <text>Numerous contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have been found in different water bodies. Directive 2013/39/EU and Decision 2018/840/EU are consequently being implemented in the field of water policies. Twelve CECs (e.g., isoproturon, ciprofloxacin, and clarithromycin are among those listed) were detected in a municipal wastewater secondary effluent by means of solid phase extraction and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-UHPLC-MS/MS). Different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), based on the combination of ozone, UVA-LED and powdered TiO2, were investigated for their removal in a semi-batch operation. In addition, TiO2-coated glass rings (P25R) were characterized with different techniques (SEM, WDXRF) and used for continuous mode operation in a packed bed reactor (PBR). Among the AOPs studied, ozone-based processes were found to be more efficient than heterogeneous photocatalysis. A kinetic study was performed showing that direct ozonation is the main oxidation pathway for CEC removal. Ozone was successfully decomposed in combination with UVA-LED and P25R, resulting in an apparent rate constant of 3.2 &amp;#215; 10&amp;#8722;2 s&amp;#8722;1 higher than in the O3/LED system (1.0 &amp;#215; 10&amp;#8722;3 s&amp;#8722;1) or with ozone alone (8.6 &amp;#215; 10&amp;#8722;5 s&amp;#8722;1). Hydroxyl radical reaction could prevail over direct ozone reaction for the most refractory compounds (e.g., isoproturon).</text>

                <text>Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) imposes a serious public health pandemic affecting the whole world, as it is spreading exponentially. Besides its high infectivity, SARS-CoV-2 causes multiple serious derangements, where the most prominent is severe acute respiratory syndrome as well as multiple organ dysfunction including heart and kidney injury. While the deleterious impact of SARS-CoV-2 on pulmonary and cardiac systems have attracted remarkable attention, the adverse effects of this virus on the renal system is still underestimated. Kidney susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection is determined by the presence of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor which is used as port of the viral entry into targeted cells, tissue tropism, pathogenicity and subsequent viral replication. The SARS-CoV-2 cellular entry receptor, ACE2, is widely expressed in proximal epithelial cells, vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells and podocytes, where it supports kidney integrity and function via the enzymatic production of Angiotensin 1-7 (Ang 1-7), which exerts vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic and diuretic/natriuretic actions via activation of the Mas receptor axis. Loss of this activity constitutes the potential basis for the renal damage that occurs in COVID-19 patients. Indeed, several studies in a small sample of COVID-19 patients revealed relatively high incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) among them. Although SARS-CoV-1 -induced AKI was attributed to multiorgan failure and cytokine release syndrome, as the virus was not detectable in the renal tissue of infected patients, SARS-CoV-2 antigens were detected in kidney tubules, suggesting that SARS-CoV-2 infects the human kidney directly, and eventually induces AKI characterized with high morbidity and mortality. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are largely unknown. However, the fact that ACE2 plays a crucial role against renal injury, the deprivation of the kidney of this advantageous enzyme, along with local viral replication, probably plays a central role. The current review focuses on the critical role of ACE2 in renal physiology, its involvement in the development of kidney injury during SARS-CoV-2 infection, renal manifestations and therapeutic options. The latter includes exogenous administration of Ang (1-7) as an appealing option, given the high incidence of AKI in this ACE2-depleted disorder, and the benefits of ACE2/Ang1-7 including vasodilation, diuresis, natriuresis, attenuation of inflammation, oxidative stress, cell proliferation, apoptosis and coagulation.</text>

Realizou-se um experimento em campo, para avaliar a eficiência e o poder residual de biofertilizantes de rochas com fósforo (BP) e com potássio (BK) mais enxofre inoculado com Acidithiobacillus, aplicados em diferentes doses, para comparação com os fertilizantes minerais superfosfato simples (SFS) e cloreto de potássio (KCl), no rendimento da alface (cv. Crespa-Grand Rapids), em dois plantios consecutivos, e em alguns atributos químicos do solo (pH, Ca, Mg trocável, P e K disponível). Nos dois ciclos houve efeito dos biofertilizantes BP, BK, e dos fertilizantes solúveis SFS e do KCl no rendimento da alface. Os melhores resultados no 1º ciclo foram com os tratamentos SFS700 BK90, SFS700 BK60, e no 2º ciclo com BP700 BK90, SFS700 BK60, e com SFS700 BK90. Observou-se efeito residual quando aplicados os tratamentos BP1050 BK90 No pH do solo não houve efeito dos biofertilizantes, aplicados em mistura com húmus de minhoca, e verificou-se significativo aumento no P e K disponíveis no solo, especialmente para P no 2º ciclo. Concluiu-se que os biofertilizantes de rochas com P e K, em mistura com húmus de minhoca, podem ser usados como alternativa a fertilizantes minerais solúveis.Production of rock biofertilizers is a practical process which reduces energy consumption and increases nutrients availability in soils. A field experiment was carried out applying phosphate biofertilizer (PB) and potash biofertilizer (KB) from rocks plus sulfur with Acidithiobacillus, applied in different rates, comparing with the mineral fertilizers simple superphosphate (SFS) and potassium chloride (KCl), on yield of lettuce (cv. Crespa-Grand Rapids), in two consecutive crops and in soil chemical attributes (pH, and available P and K). A control treatment was added without P and K (P0K0). In the two consecutive crops the biofertilizers BP, BK, and chemical fertilizers SFS and KCl were effective on lettuce yield. In the first crop the best results were obtained with the treatments SFS700 BK90, SFS700 BK60, and in the consecutive crop applying the treatments BP700 BK90, SFS700 BK60 and SFS700 BK90. In the two crops the positive response of the PK biofertilizers and PK mineral fertilizers was evident. Residual effect was observed when the treatment BP1050 BK90 was applied. Soil pH was not affected by application of PK biofertilizers plus worm-compound, increasing available P and K, especially for available P in the consecutive crop. The PK rock biofertilizers, plus worm-compound, may be applied as an alternative to PK mineral soluble fertilizers.</text>

                <text>O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção de massa, teores e aporte foliares de adubos verdes, utilizados em região de altitude do Espírito Santo, adequados à implantação da prática de plantio direto de hortaliças sob manejo orgânico. Objetivou-se também avaliar a evolução da fertilidade do solo em decorrência de dois pré-cultivos de milho e crotalária (fevereiro 2009 e outubro 2009) e dois pré-cultivos de aveia preta e tremoço branco (julho de 2010 e maio de 2011). Este trabalho foi desenvolvido na Unidade de Referência em Agroecologia do INCAPER, em Domingos Martins-ES. Os tratamentos consistiram de uma testemunha (sem palhada) e três sistemas de produção de palhadas: 1) cultivo solteiro de gramíneas (milho ou aveia preta); 2) cultivo solteiro de leguminosas (crotalária ou tremoço branco) e 3) cultivo consorciado de gramíneas/leguminosas (milho/crotalária ou aveia/tremoço). Em fevereiro de 2009, a produção de massa verde do sistema milho e milho/crotalária atingiram 73,6 e 64,5 t ha-1, respectivamente. Em julho de 2010, a produção de massa verde nos sistemas tremoço e consórcio aveia/tremoço atingiram 76,3 e 88,3 t ha-1, respectivamente. Os adubos verdes em consórcio comprovaram ser excelente opção de manejo para sistemas orgânicos, por aportarem ao solo 811,4; 941,2; 263,5; 78,6; 51,9 kg ha-1 de N, K, Ca, Mg e S, respectivamente, valores estes iguais ou superiores aos pré-cultivos solteiros. Os efeitos dos pré-cultivos de adubos verdes sobre os atributos químicos do solo em manejo orgânico, excetuando-se o aporte de nitrogênio, foram semelhantes à testemunha em todas as épocas, possivelmente nivelados pela adubação de base com composto orgânico em todos os tratamentos, que mantém altos índices de fertilidade da área.</text>

                <text>Este trabalho foi realizado na Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Areia, PB, entre janeiro a junho de 2013, com o objetivo de avaliar a produtividade de frutos de maxixe adubado com esterco bovino e biofertilizante, em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 5 x 2, com os fatores cinco doses de esterco bovino (0, 15, 30, 45 e 60 t ha-1) e presença e ausência de biofertilizante no solo. As doses de 26,3 e 27,7 t ha-1 de esterco bovino foram responsáveis pelas máximas produtividades comerciais de frutos de maxixe de 12,4 e 10,0 t ha-1, respectivamente, com e sem biofertilizante. A dose de esterco responsável pela máxima produção de frutos na presença do biofertilizante se correlacionou com 18,6 g dm-3 de matéria orgânica residual no solo enquanto que na ausência do biofertilizante a correlação foi 20,0 g dm-3. Os teores máximos de N, P e K foliar no maxixeiro foram de 46,4, 3,7 e 26,0 g kg-1 com as doses de 60,0, 29,6 e 60,0 t ha-1 de esterco bovino com biofertilizante, respectivamente. Para os tratamentos que não receberam biofertilizantes os teores de N, P e K foliar foram de 40,0, 3,0 e 20,0 g kg-1, com as doses de 60,0, 29,6 e 60,0 t ha-1 de esterco bovino, respectivamente.</text>

                <text>Neste trabalho objetivou-se avaliar o rendimento do inhame, cultivar Da Costa, adubado com doses de esterco bovino e biofertilizante. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, em parcelas subdivididas, 6 x 2 + 1 em três repetições. Nas parcelas foram testadas seis doses de esterco bovino (0; 6; 12; 18; 24 e 30 t ha-1), combinadas fatorialmente com a presença e ausência de biofertilizante e, nas subparcelas, duas formas de aplicação do biofertilizante no solo e na folha e um tratamento adicional com adubação convencional (esterco bovino e NPK). A dose de 30 t ha-1 de esterco bovino e o biofertilizante aplicado no solo e na folha produziram túberas de inhame com peso médio ideal para o comércio. O esterco bovino na dose de 19,2 t ha-1 e na ausência do biofertilizante proporcionou produtividade máxima de 20,3 t ha-1 de túberas comerciais. Nas subparcelas em que o biofertilizante foi aplicado no solo e na folha, a dose de 30 t ha-1 de esterco bovino foi responsável, respectivamente, pelas produtividades máximas de 22,8 e 24 t ha-1 de túberas comerciais. A adubação orgânica e a convencional não causaram alterações significativas no peso médio de túberas; porém, a adubação convencional aumentou a produtividade de túberas comerciais.The objective of this study was to evaluate the yam yield, cultivar Da Costa, fertilized with bovine manure doses and biofertilizer. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in subdivided plots 6 x 2 + 1 with three repetitions. In plots six doses of cattle manure (0; 6; 12; 18; 24 and 30 t ha-1) were tested, factorially combined with the presence and absence of biofertilizer and in subplots, two forms of application of biofertilizer in the soil and by spray on the leaf and an additional treatment with conventional fertilization (animal manure and NPK). The doses of 30 t ha-1 of bovine manure and the biofertilizer which was applied in the soil and leaf produced tubers with ideal average weight for the commercialization. The bovine manure in doses of 19.2 t ha-1 and in the absence of biofertilizer provided maximum productivity of 20.3 t ha-1 of commercial tubers. Subplots in which the biofertilizer was applied to the soil and leaf, the dose of 30 t ha-1 of cattle manure was responsible, respectively, for maximum yields of 22.8 and 24 t ha-1 of commercial tubers. The organic and conventional fertilizations did not cause any significant change in the mean tuber weight, but the conventional fertilization increased the productivity of commercial tuber.</text>
