<text>The vinasse, generated from alcohol distillation, is an organic matter and nutrients rich residue widely used for fertigation in sugarcane plantings. However, if such effluent is applied in excessively high doses, it can unbalance the soil sorption complex, causing serious risks to the environment if disposed indiscriminately on soil. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing doses of vinasse (0; 59; 119; 237e 474 m3 ha-1) and different incubation times (30 and 60 days) in the soil chemical proprieties. During the study, characterization of soil chemical attributes based on electrical conductivity of soil saturation extract (CEes), pH and exchangeable cations (K+ and Na+) levels. At the end of the study, it was concluded that the incubation time of vinasse in the soil affected the variables was studied. The contents of K+ and Na+ in the soil were significantly influenced by the application of vinasse increasing doses, however pH and CEes were little affected independent of the utilized doses. Application of water depths caused greater leaching of K+ in the soil than Na+ , which can cause sodicity of soil due to the application of high doses of vinasse.

This research aimed to study the economic performance of the family farming at Santa Tereza settlement, Porangatu, North of Goiás. Data were collected interviewing 45 families, in the 2001/2002 growing season. Factor analysis and a multiple regression model were used to explain the business profitability. The Santa Tereza settlement presents low rainfall, scarce water sources and a small market for their products. Farmers received government investment and operating capital, but did not receive technical assistance or human capital training. Their main activities are dairy, swine, poultry, rice and corn production. The small amount of working capital induces the adoption of labor intensive technology and small production scale (47.9% of the area is cultivated), and, as a consequence, 77.5% of the family labor is not used. This explains the low productivity levels and the high risk of the annual crops, although, all agricultural activities presented positive gross margin amounting to R$ 2,188.00 per year. Dairy was the only activity which presented positive net income. Retirement income represents 65% of the family income. Factor and regression analyses showed that technical efficiency, use of land resources, and family labor are directly related to better economic results, while annual crops and hired labor have negative effect on farm profitability.</p> <p class='western'>KEY-WORDS: Land reform settlement; production and income; factor analysis.</p></text>

Rocha. A cv.

<text>The phylogenetic clustering of 95 SARS-CoV-2 sequences from the first 3 months of the pandemic reveals insights into the early evolution of the virus and gives first indications of how the variants are globally distributed. Variants might become a challenge in terms of diagnostics, immunology, and effectiveness of drugs. All available whole genome sequence data from the NCBI database (March 16, 2020) were phylogenetically analyzed, and gene prediction as well as analysis of selected variants were performed. Antigenic regions and the secondary protein structure were predicted for selected variants. While some clusters are presenting the same variant with 100% identical bases, other SARS-CoV-2 lineages show a beginning diversification and phylogenetic clustering due to base substitutions and deletions in the genomes. First molecular epidemiological investigations are possible with the results by adding metadata as travelling history to the presented data. The advantage of variants in source tracing can be a challenge in terms of virulence, immune response, and immunological memory. Variants of viruses often show differences in virulence or antigenicity. This must also be considered in decisions like herd immunity. Diagnostic methods might not work if the variations or deletions are in target regions for the detection of the pathogen. One base substitution was detected in a primer binding site.</text>
