We describe the first whole-genome sequence of a GA13-like isolate of avian infectious bronchitis virus CK/CR/1160/16 (MN757859), obtained in 2016 in the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica. This virus caused an outbreak with great economic impact to the local poultry industry. The genome sequence is 27 696 bp in length, with the following genome organization 5'-UTR-Pol-S-3a-3b-E-4b-4c-M-5a-5b-N-6b-3'-UTR. The complete genome sequence has the highest sequence identity (94.03%) with DMV/1639/GA9977/2019 (MK878536) from Georgia, USA, and the lowest identity (86.03%) with ck/CH/LHLJ/08-6 (KX252788), from China. Analysis of the S1 subunit indicates that the Costa Rican isolate belongs to genotype I, lineage 17 (GI-17) and displays 96.89% identity with the S1 subunit of Ga-13/14255/14 (KM087780) (USA). Possible recombination events in genes S, E, M, 4b y 4c were detected, with Massachusetts, Connecticut, Arkansas and MA5 as potential parental types. This study highlights the importance of the epidemiological and molecular surveillance of avian infectious bronchitis.

Based on both: the study of composition and structure of plant communities and the analysis of the physico-chemical characteristics of mining wastes, the initial patterns of primary succession were determined. These patterns were present in three deposits of waste material abandoned during 18, 36 and 120 months respectively. Sue materials were originated in open-pit gravel mines located to the south of Bogota (Colombia). This study pretends to contribute to the knowledge of the meehanlsms of natural restauration of tropical ecosystems subjected to man-borne degradation.

Despite environmental, social and ecological dependencies, emergence of zoonotic viruses in human populations is clearly also affected by genetic factors which determine cross-species transmission potential. RNA viruses pose an interesting case study given their mutation rates are orders of magnitude higher than any other pathogen--as reflected by the recent emergence of SARS and Influenza for example. Here, we show how feature selection techniques can be used to reliably classify viral sequences by host species, and to identify the crucial minority of host-specific sites in pathogen genomic data. The variability in alleles at those sites can be translated into prediction probabilities that a particular pathogen isolate is adapted to a given host. We illustrate the power of these methods by: 1) identifying the sites explaining SARS coronavirus differences between human, bat and palm civet samples; 2) showing how cross species jumps of rabies virus among bat populations can be readily identified; and 3) de novo identification of likely functional influenza host discriminant markers.

Los modelos para la producción de café en Colombia son variados como respuesta a la oferta ambiental de las regiones, donde son establecidos como principal actividad productiva rural. Se analizaron, las condiciones de sostenibilidad en las dimensiones económica, ambiental, social y técnica, del sistema agroforestal, asocio con otros cultivos, y monocultivo, en 1 municipio de Santander y 5 municipios del departamento deCaldas. La información fue obtenida de entrevistas directas a 81 productores, y procesada mediante análisis estadístico descriptivo y clúster, que definió la escala de valoración de sostenibilidad. Los resultados indican que el modelo agroforestal impacta en la rentabilidad y productividad del cultivo, en comparación con los otros dos modelos, mostrando incluso, que este, siendo menos sostenible técnica y económicamente, tiene condiciones de sostenibilidad favorables en los indicadores ambientales, estratégicos para la adaptación y mitigación al cambio climático en las regiones.

Soil solarization is a technique used for weed and plant disease control in regions with high levels of solar radiation. The effect of solarization (0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks) upon weed populations, carrot (Daucus carota L. cv. Brasília) yield and nematode infestation in carrot roots was studied in São Luís (2º35' S; 44º10' W), MA, Brazil, using transparent polyethylene films (100 and 150 mm of thickness). The maximum temperature at 5 cm of depth was about 10ºC warmer in solarized soil than in control plots. In the study 20 weed types were recorded. Solarization reduced weed biomass and density in about 50% of weed species, including Cyperus spp., Chamaecrista nictans var. paraguariensis (Chod & Hassl.) Irwin & Barneby, Marsypianthes chamaedrys (Vahl) O. Kuntze, Mitracarpus sp., Mollugo verticillata L., Sebastiania corniculata M. Arg., and Spigelia anthelmia L. Approximately 40% of species in the weed flora were not affected by soil mulching. Furthermore, seed germination of Commelina benghalensis L. was increased by soil solarization. Marketable yield of carrots was greater in solarized soil than in the unsolarized one. It was concluded that solarization for nine weeks increases carrot yield and is effective for controlling more than half of the weed species recorded. Mulching was not effective for controlling root-knot nematodes in carrot.A solarização é uma técnica usada para o controle de plantas daninhas e doenças de plantas em regiões de alta radiação solar. Estudou-se o efeito da solarização (por 0, 3, 6 e 9 semanas) sobre a população de plantas daninhas, a produção de cenoura (Daucus carota L. cv. Brasília) e a infestação das raízes por nematóides. O experimento foi realizado em São Luís, MA, utilizando filmes de plástico com espessuras de 100 e 150 mim. A temperatura máxima a 5 cm de profundidade foi cerca de 10ºC maior nas parcelas solarizadas do que nas testemunhas. Havia 20 tipos de ervas daninhas no experimento. A solarização reduziu a biomassa e densidade das plantas daninhas em 50% das espécies, incluindo Cyperus spp., Chamaecrista nictans var. paraguariensis (Chod & Hassl.) Irwin & Barneby, Marsypianthes chamaedrys (Vahl) O. Kuntze, Mitracarpus sp., Mollugo verticillata L., Sebastiania corniculata M. Arg. e Spigelia anthelmia L. No entanto, foi ineficaz para o controle de 40% das espécies vegetais presentes no campo. Além disso, a solarização estimulou a germinação das sementes de Commelina benghalensis L. O rendimento comercial da cenoura foi maior nas parcelas solarizadas do que naquelas não cobertas. Conclui-se que a solarização por nove semanas aumenta o rendimento da cenoura e foi eficiente para o controle de mais da metade das espécies de plantas daninhas no campo. Porém, a cobertura de plástico foi ineficiente para o controle de nematóides formadores de galhas na cenoura.

Aun, y a pesar de que se han realizado apuestas por generar un turismo responsable y comprometido con el entorno cultural, con la ecología y con el patrimonio histórico legado, el ensayo, muestra un ideal entendido como una meta personal, y con un objetivo pedagógico y ético. COVID-19, unlike the other regions of the country, reached the land of Mercury with the exodus from the city to the countryside, of the children residing in the capital, carrying with them the Coronavirus that massively infected the population. In this article we address and analyze, from a tripartite perspective, the crisis of the phenomenal event, an opportunity to reflect on relevant issues –which go beyond the economic or biopolitical approach– for the human being: the meaning of life, the allin or sumaq kawsay (good living); the human condition of mortality; how to articulate social isolation with mental health and uncertainty; individualism versus Andean collectivism. El etanol o alcohol etílico se obtiene mediante la aplicación de varios procesos químicos, empezando por la fermentación para pasar a un proceso de destilación; dentro de este último, la fermentación alcohólica es la más utilizada. El etanol presenta una variedad de usos, que van desde combustibles, culinarios, farmacéuticos, industria química, entre otros. Una cualidad principal es su carácter renovable y la poca afectación al ambiente que produce.Los efectos ambientales que están desarrollando el cambio climático obligan a buscar alternativas de generación de combustibles y materias primas para la industria que reduzcan o mitiguen la afectación ambiental.El análisis beneficio/costo es elemento preponderante que definirá la mejor alternativa social y económica. En el presente proyecto, se logró obtener etanol de la savia de palma de corozo Attalea butyracea, las pruebas químicas preliminares, mostraron su buena calidad de flamabilidad. De esta forma, quedó demostrada la viabilidad técnica de producir etanol a partir de esta fuente vegetal, no obstante sehace necesario seguir investigando y documentando aspectos como volumen y eficiencia de producción y experimentar otras tecnologías que permitan mejores rendimientos, buscar nuevos mercados, fuentes de financiamiento, y a futuro investigar sobre la disponibilidadde áreas destinadas para la plantación, producción, macro de especies vegetales de este tipo de palmas y la localización de una futura planta de producción de etanol, entre otros.

A survey was done based on 19 goat shepherds at counties of Centre-highlands, Northern and North-western regions of the Rio de Janeiro State and at the county of Pedra Dourada, Zona da Mata region, State of Minas Gerais. We aimed to characterise the primary sector of the goat milk production chain settled at those regions. Therefore, questionnaires were applied in order to depict profiles of the shepherds, their families, the role of the wife in the activity, the resources available, dependence on income generated by the activity, and how producers administrate their business. Farms were distributed in five strata according to the following daily milk production averages and standard deviations: 8.8 ± 0.9, 15.7 ± 3.9, 22.6 ± 2.7, 34.4 ± 3.4, and 183.8 ± 54.2 L/d. Approximately 42% of the interviewed producers conducted their activities according to a household production model and the income earned was exclusively from the dairy goat husbandry. Sons and daughters performed an important role in the business (27.80%), but most of them (62.73%) worked out at non farm activities. The percentage of wives that worked directly in the activity (@47%) indicated that it could contribute to gender equity in the rural environment. Most of the production systems (63.16%) presented positive gross margins. We have noticed, however, that shepherds perceived only the business gross margin and that the most accurate registries taken were those related to revenues. In general, producers of the higher strata were favoured by their larger production scale, but asymptotic behaviours for costs and amounts invested in animals, equipments and buildings were observed. These characteristics should be considered when policies related to the dairy goat primary sector have to be planned.Realizou-se um levantamento com base em 19 caprinoculturas de municípios das regiões Centro-Serrana, Norte e Noroeste do estado do Rio de Janeiro e do município de Pedra Dourada, região da Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais, para caracterizar o setor primário da cadeia produtiva do leite de cabra produzido nestas regiões. Foram aplicados questionários com o objetivo de traçar o perfil dos produtores, de suas famílias, do papel da esposa na atividade, da disponibilidade de recursos, da dependência da renda gerada na atividade e do modo como os produtores administravam seu negócio. As fazendas foram distribuídas em cinco estratos de acordo com as médias de produção diária de leite e os desvios-padrão: 8,8 ± 0,9; 15,7 ± 3,9; 22,6 ± 2,7; 34,4 ± 3,4; 183,8 ± 54,2 L/dia. Aproximadamente 42% dos produtores entrevistados conduziam suas atividades segundo o modelo familiar e obtinham renda exclusivamente da caprinocultura leiteira. Os filhos e as filhas desempenhavam papel importante no negócio (27,80%), mas a maior parte (62,73%) trabalhava fora, em atividades não-agrícolas. O percentual de esposas que trabalhavam diretamente na atividade (@47%) indica sua contribuição para a eqüidade entre os gêneros no meio rural. A maioria dos sistemas de produção (63,16%) apresentou margem bruta positiva, todavia, os produtores percebiam apenas a margem bruta do negócio e seus registros mais acurados referiam-se às receitas. Em geral, produtores de estratos mais altos são favorecidos pela produção em escala. Contudo, foram observados comportamentos assintóticos para os custos e montantes investidos em animais, equipamentos e benfeitorias, fato que deve ser considerado no planejamento de políticas relacionadas ao setor primário da caprinocultura leiteira.
