Objetivos: Determinar el efecto de un programa de seguridad alimentaria (Redes Sostenibles para la Seguridad Alimentaria: REDESA) sobre la desnutrición crónica y sus factores causales en niños menores de tres años. Materiales y métodos: El resultado sobre la desnutrición se evaluó a través de la comparación de los porcentajes obtenidos en la evaluación inicial (2001) y en la evaluación final del Programa (2006). La desnutrición crónica fue definida como un índice de talla para la edad menor a -2DS, la referencia empleada fueron los patrones de la NCHS. El muestreo fue aleatorio multietápico; el tamaño muestral de la línea de base fueron 2643 niños y sus familias, para la evaluación final fueron 1597. Los factores causales se agruparon en: a) salud y alimentación, que comprendían las enfermedades diarreicas agudas (EDA), lactancia materna exclusiva (LME), alimentación durante y después de las enfermedades diarreicas; b) los económicos, que comprendía los ingresos familiares anuales y los gastos en alimentación. Resultados: La desnutrición crónica se redujo de 34,2% a 24,3%. Las EDA se redujeron de 35,0% a 16,4%, la LME se incrementó de 25,0% a 72,2%, la alimentación durante y después de las EDA se incrementó desde 3,3% a 45,0% y de 15,0% a 77,0% respectivamente, en todos los casos las diferencias fueron estadísticamente significativas (p

Este artigo aborda o tema das políticas de crédito direcionadas à agricultura familiar, destinadas a viabilizar a produção agrícola e a manutenção dos agricultores nas áreas rurais. O estudo parte da premissa de que são necessárias políticas de crédito destinadas ao desenvolvimento rural do município de Santo Antônio da Patrulha-RS, visando desacelerar o êxodo rural e facilitar o processo de sucessão familiar nas propriedades rurais do município. O objetivo principal do estudo é analisar os resultados da utilização do crédito rural proveniente do Programa Nacional de Fortalecimento da Agricultura Familiar (PRONAF) pelos agricultores familiares do município. Para isso, foi realizada uma pesquisa documental utilizando-se dados disponíveis na Empresa de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (EMATER) do município e entrevistas com produtores familiares rurais do município que receberam recursos do PRONAF. Os resultados apontam para um uso preferencial do crédito para a estruturação das propriedades rurais, como compra de maquinário e investimento em galpões e cercas, o que facilita a diversificação da produção e a manutenção das atividades já realizadas no estabelecimento rurais. Além disso, a importância do PRONAF evidencia-se através do grande número de contratos firmados nos últimos anos, impactando diretamente na economia do município.

Con el objetivo de determinar el efecto de la poda y de la aplicación de FitoMas-E en el rendimiento de Jatropha curcas y de cultivos asociados, mediante un diseño en bloques completamente aleatorizados, se estudiaron seis tratamientos: T1: control sin poda y sin aplicación foliar; T2: control sin poda con aplicación foliar; T3: poda a 50 cm sin aplicación foliar; T4: poda a 50 cm con aplicación foliar; T5: poda a 100 cm sin aplicación foliar; T6: poda a 100 cm con aplicación foliar. Se evaluaron los días de brotación, el número de brotes emergidos, el número de ramas productivas por planta, el número de racimos por rama, el número de frutos por racimo, los frutos cosechados, el peso de los frutos, el peso de las semillas, y además se estimó el rendimiento de frutos y el de semillas. Durante la etapa experimental se sembró calabaza y frijol y se calculó el rendimiento agrícola. T4 fue el más precoz en brotar (6 días), y además alcanzó el mayor número de brotes (10), de ramas productivas (12) y 1,2 t de semilla/ha. La calabaza y el frijol tuvieron rendimientos de 7,0 y 2,7 t/ha, respectivamente. Se concluye que la poda, combinada con la aplicación foliar de FitoMas-E influye favorablemente en las variables morfológicas y productivas de J. curcas, por lo que se recomienda continuar estos estudios.

São apresentados resultados preliminares de um projeto sobre a ecologia dos flebotomíneos, vetores de leishmaniose tegumentar, numa área de plantação de cacau no sul do Estado da Bahia, Brasil. Nesta área existem 60 casas, afastadas entre si, onde vivem 229 habitantes e 31 cães. Entre os moradores, 45% tinham reação de Montenegro positiva; destes, 8,8% eram portadores de úlceras em atividade e 37% de cicatrizes de úlceras. Dos cães, 22% eram soropositivos. Dos 7 cães com úlceras, apenas 3 eram soropositivos. Em 14% das casas inspecionadas, foram encontrados flebótomos. Durante dois anos, 72 hamsters foram mantidos como sentinelas em casas de pacientes com úlceras leishmanióticas, porém nehum adquiriu a infecção. Foram coletados e identificados 5.614 exemplares de flebótomos pertencentes a 14 diferentes espécies. Entre estas, Lutzomyia whitmani (92%) e Lutzomyia intermedia (4,8 %) eram as espécies mais abundantes. Esses flebótomos, muito antropofílicos, podiam ser encontrados dentro das casas e nas suas periferias e são provavelmente, os principais vetores da doença no ambiente doméstico. As outras 12 espécies eram menos frequentes e mais encontrados em ambientes silvestres, onde também picavam o homem. A maioria das espécies começava a aparecer às 17 horas, no crepúsculo, e alcançava sua densidade máxima às 24 horas, quando declinava até desaparecer às 6 horas da manhã. L. whitmani em todas as fases lunares foi capturada com a mesma densidade, enquanto L.intermedia foi mais abundante durante a fase de lua nova. Centenas de flebótomos coletados mensalmente durante o segundo ano de observações, permanecem preservados em nitrogênio líquido, aguardando o ajustamento de técnicas de PCR para a verificação da taxa de infecção natural desses vetores por leishmânia. Os resultadosfinais de todo o projeto serão publicados tão logo seja examinado esse material.

The current research was carried out in the greenhouse “La Condesa”, which belongs to the Empresa de Cultivos Varios “Lenin”, in Jovellanos, Matanzas province. Its main objective was to evaluate the effect of the application of biofertilizer (Azospirillum sp and Micorrizas) in combinations of crops (lettuce and radish, or beet and radish). The research included four different treatments: witness, Micorrizas, Azospirillum, Azospirillum +Micorrizas. We used an at random block design. Data were processed after evaluating yields components by using the statistical software called Statgraphics, version 5.0. The research showed a positive response to the application of biofertilizers, resulting in a considerable increase of profits.

The article is devoted to studies the performance of oral fluid of children of 6-7 years, which often suffer from acute respiratory viral infections. Examination of 111 children with frequent acute respiratory viral infection and 89 healthy children revealed cariogenic situation in the mouth of sickly children, which is caused by the deterioration of the speed of salivation, mineralized potential, viscosity and pH of oral fluid in them. The results showed that the worst results of oral fluid parameters studied in children, who often suffer from ARVI. Our research has shown that children who often suffer acute respiratory viral infections, the rate of salivation is somewhat lower than in healthy children. Results of the study index MP children 6-7 years, both groups are almost identical. So the best indicator was in healthy children 6 years old - 2,51 ± 0,04 points, and the worst in children 7 years of age who are sick of SARS - 2,17 ± 0,12 points. Probable difference was observed only in average. We found that children who are sick of ARVI, the pH is lower than in healthy children. For example, in a group of healthy it varies from 6,64 ± 0,03 units to 6,65 ± 0.01, which corresponds to a weakly acidic value. In the group of children being ill its value - from 6,82 ± 0,01 units up to 6,97 ± 0,05 units, which is higher than in the healthy. Oral fluid viscosity index within the normal range in both groups of the study. But this figure is significantly higher in children with frequent episodes of acute respiratory viral infections like 6 or 7 years old - 1,60 ± 0,02 units and 1,76 ± 0,04 units respectively, in contrast to healthy children of the same age (1,31 ± 0,01 and 1,35 ± 0,02 units). Based on the results of the study can be argued that children who are sick of ARVI studied parameters worse than healthy. Consequently, children often suffer from acute respiratory viral infections studied indicators were worse than in healthy children, hence the presence of cariogenic situation in the mouth, which leads to caries process in the hard tissue of teeth. The findings suggest the need for children in these preventive measures aimed at improving conditions for the process of mineralization of enamel that will enable to reduce prevalence and intensity of caries in children who often suffer from acute respiratory viral infections.

Currently, the detection and identification of viruses that cause respiratory and influenza-like illness (ILI) is one of the main tasks of public healthcare. In 2016-2017, nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from 200 sick children with ILI aged 0 to 5 years. Detection of pathogens in ILI patients was carried out by RT-LAMP amplification method. In 43 % of patients ILI viruses were detected. Among all confirmed cases of viral infection, a respiratory-syncytial virus was detected in 49 %, rhinoviruses in 16 %, coronaviruses in 9 %, parainfluenza viruses in 6 %, and human metapneumoviruses in 2 % of samples. Influenza A viruses were found in 6 % of infected specimens. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of using RT-LAMP amplification in differential laboratory diagnostics of the ILI of viral etiology.

A novel coronavirus causing severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), named SARS-CoV-2, was identified at the end of 2019. The spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has progressively expanded from China, involving several countries throughout the world, leading to the classification of the disease as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to published reports, COVID-19 severity and mortality are higher in elderly patients and those with active comorbidities. In particular, lung cancer patients were reported to be at high risk of pulmonary complications related to SARS-CoV2 infection. Therefore, the management of cancer care during the COVID-19 pandemic is a crucial issue, to which national and international oncology organizations have replied with recommendations concerning patients receiving anticancer treatments, delaying follow-up visits and limiting caregiver admission to the hospitals. In this historical moment, medical oncologists are required to consider the possibility to delay active treatment administration based on a case-by-case risk/benefit evaluation. Potential risks associated with COVID-19 infection should be considered, considering tumor histology and natural course, disease setting, clinical conditions, and disease burden, together with the expected benefit, toxicities (e.g., myelosuppression or interstitial lung disease), and response obtained from the planned or ongoing treatment. In this study, we report the results of proactive measures including social media, telemedicine, and telephone triage for screening patients with lung cancer during the COVID-19 outbreak in the European Institute of Oncology (Milan, Italy). Proactive management and containment measures, applied in a structured and daily way, has significantly aided the identification of advance patients with suspected symptoms related to COVID-19, limiting their admission to our cancer center; we have thus been more able to protect other patients from possible contamination and at the same time guarantee to the suspected patients the immediate treatment and evaluation in referral hospitals for COVID-19.

Background: The pandemic of COVID-19 has affected many countries and medical services including assisted reproductive treatment (ART) have been hampered. Aim: The study was conducted to assess the preparedness of ART clinics and staff to resume services; patients' reasons to initiate treatment; and key performance indicators (KPIs) of ART laboratories during the pandemic. Setting and Design: This was a semidescriptive, prospective study in two private in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics in Maharashtra, India, when COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic people was unavailable. Materials and Methods: Time required for replenishing consumables and clinic preparedness to function under “new norms” of pandemic was documented. Infection mitigation measures and triaging strategy were evaluated. KPIs following resumption were analyzed. The Student's t-test was performed for comparing parameters. Results: Thirty percent of the patients consulted through telemedicine accepted or were eligible to initiate treatment on clinic resumption. Lack of safe transport and financial constraints prevented majority from undergoing IVF, and 9% delayed treatment due to fear of pandemic. With adequate training, staff compliance to meet new demands was achieved within a week, but procuring consumables and injections was time-consuming. Fifty-two cycles of IVF were performed including fresh and frozen embryo transfers with satisfactory KPIs even during pandemic. Conscious sedation and analgesia during oocyte retrieval were associated with reduced procedure time and no intervention for airway maintenance compared to general anesthesia. Self-reported pain scores by patients ranged from nil to mild on a graphic rating scale. Conclusions: This study provides practical insight for the resumption of IVF services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The consequences of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus have been devastating to the healthcare system.As the positive effects of social distancing, mandatory masking, and societal lockdown on the spread of the disease and its incidence in the community were documented, societal and financial pressures mounted worldwide, prompting efforts to “re-open” countries, states, communities, businesses, and schools. The same happened with hospital, which had to start developing strategies to resume elective surgery activities. This manuscript describes the pre-requisites as well as the strategies for resuming surgical activity, be it in the outpatient or inpatient setting.
