El café en el Perú es de gran importancia económica, social y ambiental; sin embargo, diversos factores afectan la sustentabilidad del cultivo. Una etapa importante para evaluar la sustentabilidad de sistemas de producción agrícola, es la caracterización de fincas. Por ello, este trabajo se realizó para caracterizar las fincas productoras de café convencional y orgánico en el valle del Alto Mayo, región San Martín. Para la investigación se seleccionaron fincas de producción orgánica, pertenecientes a la Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Fe y Esperanza Valle del Alto Mayo (CACFEVAM) y de producción convencional, pertenecientes a la Asociación de Productores Agropecuarios El Emigrante (APAEM). La muestra (n=56) estuvo constituida por 26 productores orgánicos de CAFEVAM y 30 productores convencionales de APAEM y todos los productores recibieron recomendaciones técnicas similares para el manejo del cultivo. Para la toma de datos se usaron encuestas previamente diseñadas, con preguntas relacionadas con las dimensiones económica, sociocultural y ambiental de la sustentabilidad. Los resultados muestran diferencias entre fincas de producción orgánica y convencional, casi exclusivamente en las prácticas de manejo del cafetal. Sin embargo, esas diferencias no estuvieron asociadas con una mejora de los rendimientos y tampoco con un incremento de los beneficios económicos para el productor cafetalero de la zona de estudio. El análisis de conglomerados identificó dos grupos de fincas, el primero reunió a 28 fincas de producción convencional y el segundo a las 26 de producción orgánica + 02 de producción convencional, que realizan prácticas enmarcadas en la agricultura orgánica, pero que no están certificadas como tales.

Los nematodos fitoparásitos son una de las mayores limitantes en la fruticultura tropical causando grandes pérdidas económicas por la reducción de los rendimientos. En Colombia no existe información respecto a estos parásitos que afectan el cultivo del maracuyá y es necesario generarla para crear estrategias de manejo. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar y cuantificar los nematodos fitoparásitos presentes en plantas de maracuyá de la Colección Nacional, conformada por 28 accesiones de diferentes procedencias establecida en la Granja Luker en Palestina, Caldas (Colombia), a 1058 m.s.n.m., 5° 4' 13.2' N y -75° 41' 7.7' O, 23 °C, 2250 mm/año y 75% de HR. La recolección de las muestras se realizó en la zona de plateo de cada planta hasta 60 cm de profundidad. En cada accesión se tomaron tres muestras de 100 g de raíces funcionales y 100 g de suelo. La extracción de nematodos de raíces y suelo se realizó con base en el principio de flotación en azúcar. Para los datos se desarrolló un análisis univariado con la estimación del promedio, el coeficiente de variación, el análisis de varianza y prueba de Tukey al 5%, para establecer las diferencias entre accesiones. Se recuperaron nematodos de siete géneros, Helicotylenchus, Rotylenchulus, Radopholus, Meloidogyne, Tylenchus, Aphelenchoides y Trichodorus. Las especies con mayor frecuencia en las accesiones, tanto en raíces como en suelo, fueron Helicotylenchus dihystera, Rotylenchulus reniformis y Radopholus similis con 100, 75 y 61%, respectivamente. Se encontraron 11, 8 y 16 accesiones de maracuyá sin parasitismo de los géneros Radopholus, Rotylenchulus y Meloidogyne, respectivamente. Dentro de éstas, sobresalen las accesiones AntFla03 y CauFla01 por sus características agronómicas, las cuales constituyen un reservorio genético para programas de fitomejoramiento en la búsqueda de resistencia o tolerancia a nematodos fitoparásitos que involucren hibridación o injertación.

El presente trabajo se centra en el análisis de los efectos que tiene el programa de fomento productivo PRODESAL sobre la capacidad de adaptación de la pequeña agricultura en la Región Metropolitana. En una primera etapa se desarrolló un marco para analizar la capacidad de adaptación de la pequeña agricultura. Dicho marco, desarrollado en base a una metodología de carácter inductivo, fue utilizado en una segunda etapa para evaluar el programa desde su capacidad para promover o limitar aquellos factores que determinan la capacidad de adaptación de los pequeños agricultores. Lo anterior fue realizado en base a información levantada en terreno mediante entrevistas semi-estructuradas a profesionales del programa PRODESAL. De esta forma, fue posible observar que el programa PRODESAL promueve la capacidad de adaptación al cambio climático de los pequeños agricultores al potenciar gran parte de los factores de carácter socio-económico que son determinantes en el proceso adaptativo. Sin embargo, se encontraron grandes falencias en la promoción de aquellos de carácter psicológico/cognitivos.

Frente al fenómeno de la globalización y a los evidentes estragos causados al medio ambiente y a las economías locales por las acciones depredadoras de las grandes corporaciones, han surgido en las últimas décadas iniciativas en diferentes países que se presentan como una alternativa al paradigma predominante, basado en el modelo neoliberal, y que buscan impulsar el desarrollo desde un enfoque territorial mediante la recuperación de los espacios de intercambio económico por los actores locales, como estrategia para contribuir a la regeneración del tejido social. Aun cuando existen diversos tipos de emprendimientos locales, en Yucatán, y dentro de una corriente de consumo conocida como slow food, desde el año 2008 se ha desarrollado un movimiento que agrupa a emprendedores locales que ofrecen de manera directa productos naturales a los que han incorporado, si bien en grados diferenciados, la visión de la sustentabilidad, es decir, productos agroecológicos. Estas iniciativas no pretenden competir en los grandes circuitos productivos sino que han encontrado un nicho de mercado, representado por un tipo de consumidores con un perfil diferente de los consumidores tradicionales, y que se inscriben dentro de la corriente del denominado «consumo responsable». Dentro de este contexto, resulta pertinente indagar acerca de las iniciativas emprendedoras de los productores que participan en el movimiento slow food en Yucatán, con el fin de tener un primer acercamiento a las características que distinguen este tipo particular de emprendimientos. Por lo anterior, el objetivo de este trabajo es describir las características del proceso de creación de empresas, así como identificar los factores clave que estimulan o inhiben las capacidades empresariales de los emprendedores pertenecientes al movimiento slow food en Yucatán.

En este artículo se presenta parte de una investigación de carácter cualitativo que se ha llevado a cabo sobre una amplia muestra de microemprendedores en el estado mexicano de Yucatán, los cuales, motivados por el consumo de productos saludables y de carácter orgánico en el campo de la agroecología, se han iniciado en sus negocios, basados, principalmente, en la producción y comercialización de este tipo de productos de origen ganadero o agrícola, pero, fundamentalmente, este último. En concreto, se quiere exponer, más detalladamente, la opinión que tienen estos micro-emprendedores agroecológicos sobre los productores de su entorno, es decir, sobre la competencia en el mercado yucateco, indagando sobre la existencia o no de redes sociales e interacción social entre los emprendedores para el desarrollo de sus empresas en el sector de los productos ecológicos, así como mercados o ferias; la investigación también está centrada en indagar sobre las formas de cooperación que existen entre unos y otros.

Automatic methods for an early detection of plant diseases (i.e., visible symptoms at early stages of disease development) using remote sensing are critical for precision crop protection. Verticillium wilt (VW) of olive caused by Verticillium dahliae can be controlled only if detected at early stages of development. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and support vector machine (SVM) classification methods were applied to classify V. dahliae severity using remote sensing at large scale. High-resolution thermal and hyperspectral imagery were acquired with a manned platform which flew a 3000-ha commercial olive area. LDA reached an overall accuracy of 59.0% and a κ of 0.487 while SVM obtained a higher overall accuracy, 79.2% with a similar κ, 0.495. However, LDA better classified trees at initial and low severity levels, reaching accuracies of 71.4 and 75.0%, respectively, in comparison with the 14.3% and 40.6% obtained by SVM. Normalized canopy temperature, chlorophyll fluorescence, structural, xanthophyll, chlorophyll, carotenoid and disease indices were found to be the best indicators for early and advanced stage infection by VW. These results demonstrate that the methods developed in other studies at orchard scale are valid for flights in large areas comprising several olive orchards differing in soil and crop management characteristics.

Las mujeres han incursionado en diversas actividades productivas que a su vez les permiten ejercer su papel dentro de la unidad doméstica y mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Ante ello, se analiza la participación de la mujer campesina en el aprovechamiento de recursos naturales a partir de prácticas de turismo rural en Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, y se identifica su aportación al desarrollo local sustentable. Esta es una investigación cualitativa, basada en entrevistas dirigidas a mujeres que laboran en la actividad turística. Se concluye que la mujer campesina contribuye a la conservación ambiental a través de prácticas de turismo rural y actividades productivas, mediante una relación armónica hombre-naturaleza que implica el largo plazo.

Airborne laser scanner (ALS) data provide an enhanced capability to remotely map two key variables in forestry: leaf area index (LAI) and tree height (H). Nevertheless, the cost, complexity and accessibility of this technology are not yet suited for meeting the broad demands required for estimating and frequently updating forest data. Here we demonstrate the capability of alternative solutions based on the use of low-cost color infrared (CIR) cameras to estimate tree-level parameters, providing a cost-effective solution for forest inventories. ALS data were acquired with a Leica ALS60 laser scanner and digital aerial imagery (DAI) was acquired with a consumer-grade camera modified for color infrared detection and synchronized with a GPS unit. In this paper we evaluate the generation of a DAI-based canopy height model (CHM) from imagery obtained with low-cost CIR cameras using structure from motion (SfM) and spatial interpolation methods in the context of a complex canopy, as in forestry. Metrics were calculated from the DAI-based CHM and the DAI-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for the estimation of tree height and LAI, respectively. Results were compared with the models estimated from ALS point cloud metrics. Field measurements of tree height and effective leaf area index (LAIe) were acquired from a total of 200 and 26 trees, respectively. Comparable accuracies were obtained in the tree height and LAI estimations using ALS and DAI data independently. Tree height estimated from DAI-based metrics (Percentile 90 (P90) and minimum height (MinH)) yielded a coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.71 and a root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.71 m while models derived from ALS-based metrics (P90) yielded an R2 = 0.80 and an RMSE = 0.55 m. The estimation of LAI from DAI-based NDVI using Percentile 99 (P99) yielded an R2 = 0.62 and an RMSE = 0.17 m2/m−2. A comparative analysis of LAI estimation using ALS-based metrics (laser penetration index (LPI), interquartile distance (IQ), and Percentile 30 (P30)) yielded an R2 = 0.75 and an RMSE = 0.14 m2/m−2. The results provide insight on the appropriateness of using cost-effective 3D photo-reconstruction methods for targeting single trees with irregular and heterogeneous tree crowns in complex open-canopy forests. It quantitatively demonstrates that low-cost CIR cameras can be used to estimate both single-tree height and LAI in forest inventories.
