Objetivou-se realizar a caracterização fitotécnica dos frutos e avaliar o efeito da remoção do tegumento da semente e do uso do GA3 e do bioestimulante (Stimulate®) sobre a germinação de sementes dos porta-enxertos de citros Flying Dragon e citrumelo Swingle. A caracterização fitotécnica compreendeu a massa do fruto, o diâmetro transversal e longitudinal e a espessura da 'casca' e a contagem de sementes viáveis e inviáveis por fruto. Realizou-se um experimento para cada porta-enxerto, em casa de vegetação sob nebulização intermitente, e as avaliações foram a cada 3 dias, após o início do processo germinativo, verificando-se porcentagem de germinação e índice de velocidade de germinação. A utilização do GA3 e a retirada do tegumento em sementes do porta-enxerto Flying Dragon aumentam a porcentagem de germinação e o índice de velocidade de germinação, e para o porta-enxerto citrumelo Swingle, a retirada do tegumento das sementes aumenta a porcentagem de germinação e o índice de velocidade de germinação.

O uso de fitorreguladores que estimulam maior crescimento radicular pode favorecer a absorção de fósforo em arroz cultivado no sistema de terras altas. Objetivou-se avaliar o crescimento aéreo e radicular de arroz submetido a diferentes doses de fósforo na presença e ausência de bioestimulante. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação da Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas-UNESP, em Botucatu-SP. Os tratamentos constaram de 6 doses de P na semeadura (0, 12,5, 25, 50, 100 e 200 mg dm-3), na presença e ausência de Stimulate® aplicado via sementes (cultivar Primavera). Aos 78 dias após emergência, as plantas foram cortadas na altura do colo para determinação da área foliar e matéria seca de folhas e colmo. As amostras de raízes coletadas no mesmo dia tiveram o diâmetro médio radicular e massa da matéria seca determinadas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com três repetições, em esquema fatorial 2x6. Foram feitas análises de variância e regressão, e ajustaram-se equações lineares e quadráticas significativas até 5% de probabilidade pelo teste F, que apresentaram os maiores coeficientes de determinação (R2). Com o aumento das doses de P, a produção de massa e área foliar das plantas de arroz foi menor na presença do bioestimulante. Para o acúmulo de fósforo na parte aérea e determinações do sistema radicular, comportamento semelhante foi observado. Conclui-se que o uso de Stimulate® no tratamento de sementes, tanto para a produção de fitomassa como nas determinações do sistema radicular, foi eficiente apenas em baixas quantidades de adubo aplicado.

Durante cuatro décadas, Gustavo adelantó investigaciones sobre ecología y conservación de ecosistemas andinos, estudiando numerosos aspectos de diversos grupos de animales, incluyendo insectos, anfibios, reptiles, aves y mamíferos. Su legado es enorme y perdurará a través del trabajo de quienes fueron sus discípulos, algunos de los cuales son ya investigadores destacados. Su visión amplia de la naturaleza, su rigor académico, su sencillez y su generosidad con el conocimiento son un ejemplo a seguir para las nuevas generaciones de investigadores. Próximamente dedicaremos un número de Biota Colombiana a artículos relacionados de una u otra forma con el trabajo de Gustavo Kattan. La publicación de una colección de artículos de excelente calidad será el menor homenaje a él y al alto nivel que siempre puso en sus investigaciones.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a possibilidade de redução da adubação com o uso de biofertilizante e sua influência nas características químicas do solo, na nutrição foliar e na produtividade na cultura do milho. O estudo foi desenvolvido na Unidade Experimental da UniEvangélica, no município de Anápolis, GO. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram T1: sem adubação química (testemunha); T2: 50% da adubação; T3: 75% da adubação e T4: 100% da adubação NPK (400 kg ha-1 05-25-15 + 222 kg ha-1 uréia em cobertura). Todos os tratamentos receberam a aplicação de 150 L ha-1 de fertilizante biológico. Procedeu-se à análise de variância, comparando-se as médias dos parâmetros de fertilidade do solo, nutricionais da planta e produção pelo teste de Tukey e as doses de NPK por análise de regressão. A aplicação do biofertilizante permite melhorar o estado nutricional e produtivo da cultura do milho com reflexos positivos na melhora da fertilidade do solo. A adubação biológica com utilização do biofertilizante apresenta-se como uma alternativa a redução no uso de adubação química a partir do segundo ano de uso em áreas de plantio direto. Novos estudos devem ser realizados a fim de verificar se o uso contínuo promove melhoras gradativas na fertilidade dos solos do Cerrado.

Since the implementation of the integrated project in pork meat production, the region of Alto Paranaiba (MG)faced a new sector restructuring, which resulted in the installation of several agribusiness companies. However,the region is experiencing a strong environmental impact caused by the accumulation of pig slurry and themisuse of technological mechanisms that attempt to correct and fertilize soils without proper accountability.Aware of the various environmental concerns on a global scale that have been highlighted in international environmentalconferences (e.g., Kyoto Protocol), transnational companies, in partnership with pork meat producersfrom the region, began to invest in anaerobic biodigesters, which allow to reduce the organic load by 96%, providingelectrical energy (biogas) and producing biofertilizer. From the results of research done by Embrapa, theapplication of biofertilizer on the coffee and corn plantation has brought gains in productivity and plague elimination.Analyzing the soil after application, has found harmful high chemical concentrations to the environment.Therefore, this article aims to analyze the positive and negative aspects. This article aims to analyze the use ofbiofertilizers in agricultural areas of the Alto Paranaiba (MG) region, specifically in the municipalities of Patosde Minas and Patrocinio.

As atividades ao ar livre podem expor os praticantes a riscos, os quais não devem ser considerados unicamente impeditivos, entretanto, geram a demanda por processos estruturados de gestão, ainda mais relevantes com a presença da COVID-19. Este trabalho relata a experiência do desenvolvimento de um processo de gestão de riscos para atividades ao ar livre durante a pandemia de COVID-19. A experiência ocorreu em uma disciplina do Curso de Educação Física da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul. O processo de gestão de riscos buscou contextualizar a proposta de atividades ao ar livre, além de identificar, analisar, avaliar e tratar os riscos. Enfim, uma experiência que contribuiu para o aprimoramento da segurança dos participantes da disciplina e que pode ser útil a demais praticantes de atividades ao ar livre, em especial, durante a pandemia.

The use of smart-phones and tablets is increasing the farming community before these fact companies that offer products and services to this sector are mobilizing to be active in this new reality. However, companies that operate in the rural market, not only have the aim of helping farmers in providing services through mobile technology applications, it was necessary to identify the strategic performance of these companies as a market opportunity in selling their products in the agricultural sector. Therefore, this article aimed to identify the strategic planning of technology companies to provide services through applications to farmers. The methodological approach used is a qualitative approach with the exploratory and descriptive aim of the use of content analysis of the websites of those companies studied. This study concluded that companies by offering technology services to farmers, use these services strategically to your advantage without the knowledge of the real needs of farmers.

The aim of this study was to characterize the factors associated with the growth phase of dairy cattle used in family farming. We investigated 20 family-run milk production systems located in the Conceição de Ipanema municipality, MG, Brazil. Farmers were interviewed using a semi-structured survey form containing 152 questions. The questions were aimed at characterizing the farmer, herd, and husbandry system at pre- and post-weaning phases. Data were processed by using Sphinx® software, and descriptive analyses were performed in MS Excel® software. The results showed strengths, including navel healing (100%), location of the calf housing above (45%) or next to the pen (35%), and existence of a sanitary calendar (90%). However, several limitations in the management of calves and heifers were identified, such as lack of zootechnical bookkeeping (55%), manual milking with calf at the foot (65%), absence of herd sizing (100%), no routine weighing of calves (95%), incorrect colostrum management (80%), non-supply of transition milk to calves (85%), and likely failure to diagnose diseases by a fraction of the farmers. Thus, training regarding adequate management practices by extension technicians is imperative, along with the formulation of public policies that comply with the aspirations of family farmers, while promoting their economic and social sustainability.

Diversity and distribution of vascular epiphytes in an insular Brazilian coastal forest

An account of the resource
The study was carried out in a 3 000m2 area of coastal Atlantic rain forest at Ilha do Mel island (25o30’’S 48o23’W), on 100 assorted trees separated into 2 meter-high strata starting from the ground. In each stratum all of the occurring epiphytic species were recorded. The sampled species were grouped into three categories: exclusive, preferential, and indifferent, according to their abundance in each strata, and selective, preferential and indifferent, according to abundance on the forophytes. Intermediate strata registered the highest diversity. Six species were considered exclusive to one or two strata, 15 were restricted to some strata and 5 presented a broad distribution. No epiphytic species showed uniform horizontal distribution on the area. The epiphyte richness in a host tree varied from zero to 30. Regarding to fidelity on host tree species, few selective or preferential, and mainly indifferent epiphyte species, were found. A total of 82 epiphyte species were sampled in the surveyed tree, and the Wittaker plot indicate a highly dominant assemblage. Rev. Biol. Trop. 57 (3): 749-759. Epub 2009 September 30.El estudio se realizó en un área 3 000 m2 de bosque atlántico húmedo en una isla brasileña, Ilha do Mel (25o30’’ S 48o23’ W). Seleccionamos 100 árboles de las 10 principales especies y las dividimos en estratos de dos metros a partir de la superficie del suelo. En cada estrato registramos todas las especies epífitas observadas. Las especies muestreadas fueron agrupadas en tres categorías: exclusivas, preferenciales, e indiferentes (según su abundancia en los estratos), y selectivas, preferenciales e indiferentes (según su abundancia en los árboles). Los estratos intermedios registraron las más altas diversidades. Seis especies fueron consideradas exclusivas a uno o dos estratos, 15 estuvieron limitadas a algunos estratos y 5 presentaron amplia distribución. Para ninguna especie epífita hubo distribución horizontal uniforme. La riqueza de las epífitas en un forofito varió de cero a 30 especies. Según la fidelidad de las epífitas en los árboles, registramos pocas especies selectivas o preferenciales y muchas indiferentes. En los 100 árboles examinados encontramos 82 especies de epífitas, y el diagrama del Wittaker indicó alta dominancia de unas pocas especies.
