Con la excepción de unas pocas ciudades grandes, hay poco conocimiento sobre las aves urbanas de América Latina. Utilicé transectos lineales en 15 parques urbanos en la ciudad de San José entre setiembre y diciembre de 2009 y encontré 40 especies, la mayoría Tyrannidae (n=10) y Parulidae (n=9). Hubo 23 residentes (principalmente Tyrannidae), 15 migrantes del norte (en su mayoría Parulidae) y un migrante del sur. Las especies más representativas fueron Contopus sp. y Setophaga petechia. Zenaida asiatica, Turdus grayi y Quiscalus mexicanus estaban muy extendidos, al igual que la paloma Columba livia, que podía llegar a 122 individuos por parque. La diversidad y la abundancia fueron determinadas por el tamaño del parque, la complejidad de la vegetación y la proximidad a los fragmentos de vegetación. Los parques urbanos están siendo utilizados como áreas transitorias y permanentes por las aves migratorias y las características biofísicas de algunos parques favorecen a Columba livia y Quiscalus mexicanus, generando competencia, depredación y desplazamiento de otra especie, así como daños a la infraestructura. Estas áreas verdes podrían usarse para la observación y educación de aves.

A perda de florestas naturais devido a pressões antrópicas levou as florestas secundárias a ocupar uma grande proporção de áreas no leste da Amazônia. Com o objetivo de conhecer as características de uma comunidade arbórea e a estrutura populacional das espécies mais representativas, foram investigadas a riqueza de espécies, a estrutura e a composição florística de uma floresta secundária de 40 anos no município de Bragança (01°11'S e 46°40'W), Estado do Pará, Brasil. A amostragem contou com todos os indivíduos de espécies arbóreas (exceto Arecaceae) com DAP > 5 cm em 150 quadrados de 10×10 m. Foram registrados 2.934 indivíduos em 154 espécies, 101 gêneros e 40 famílias. A densidade foi de 1.956,00 ± 643,45 ind ha-1 e a área basal de 17,358 ± 7,952 m² ha-1 com um índice de diversidade de Shannon de 4,030 nats. ind.-1. As espécies com a maior abundância de indivíduos foram Myrcia bracteata, Casearia arborea e Maprounea guianensis. As com maior área basal foram Tapirira guianensis, Croton matourensis e Maprounea guianensis. A riqueza de espécies adaptou-se ao modelo de distribuição lognormal apenas para área basal e não para número de indivíduos. Em 40 anos de sucessão, esta floresta mostra uma grande diversidade de espécies e baixa área basal.The loss of natural forests due to the anthropic pressure carried the secondary forests to occupy great proportions of areas in East of Amazon. With the aim to known the characteristics of a arboreal community and the population structure of the most representative species, it were investigated species richness, structure, and floristic composition of a 40 years old secondary forest in the municipality of Bragança (01°11'S and 46°40'W), Pará State, Brazil. It was sampled all individuals of arboreal species (except Arecaceae) with DBH > 5 cm in 150 plots of 10×10 m. It was registered 2,934 individuals in 154 species, 101 genera and 40 families. The density was 1,956.00 ± 643.45 ind. ha-1 and the basal area of 17.358 ± 7.952 m² ha-1 with a Shannon diversity index of 4,030 nats. ind.-1. The species with the highest abundance of individuals were Myrcia bracteata, Casearia arborea, and Maprounea guianensis. The species with the highest basal area were Tapirira guianensis, Croton matourensis, and Maprounea guianensis. The richness of species fitted to the lognormal distribution model just for basal area and not for number of individuals. In 40 years of succession, this forest shows high species diversity and low basal area.

O represamento do Rio Pananá para construção da hidrelétrica de Porto Primavera, entre os Estados do Mato Grosso do Sul e São Paulo, alterou as relações ecológicas na região. O objetivo do estudo foi descrever a fauna de culicídeos potencialmente vetores nesse reservatório, a 2km da margem direita, em Bataguassu, Mato Grosso do Sul, na fase anterior à inundação. Os culicídeos foram capturados em ambientes distintos mensalmente, de julho de 1997 a novembro de 1999. Foram calculados índices de riqueza e abundância. Obtiveram-se 16.553 exemplares adultos e 1.795 imaturos, com riqueza de 86 e 44 espécies, respectivamente. A fauna culicídea da área de estudo apresentava relativa riqueza, com espécies de valor epidemiológico, como o Anopheles darlingi, além de outras com potencial na veiculação de arbovírus.The damming of Paraná River for the construction of Porto Primavera Hydroelectric Power Plant, between the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Midwestern Brazil and São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, has changed the ecological relationships in the area. The objective of the study was to describe the fauna that can be potential vectors in this reservoir, 2 km away from its right bank, in Bataguassu, Mato Grosso do Sul, before flooding. Mosquitoes were monthly captured in different environments from July 1997 to November 1999. During this period 16,553 adult specimens and 1,795 immature forms were collected with richness of 86 different species of adults and 44 different species of immature forms. The fauna presented a richness that included species of epidemiological importance, as Anopheles darlingi and other mosquitoes with potential for arbovirus transmission.

Las áreas verdes en las ciudades se han considerado elementos importantes para la conservación de la avifauna. En este estudio se presentan estimaciones de riqueza y abundancia de aves, así como su relación con las áreas verdes en la ciudad de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México. Identificamos un total de 75 especies de aves en diez áreas verdes de diferente tamaño de febrero a julio de 2016 y relacionamos su presencia con variables ambientales a dos escalas geográficas (local y de paisaje). Se utilizaron análisis no paramétricos para comparar la riqueza y abundancia de las aves entre áreas verdes y categorías de tamaño. El porcentaje de superficie total ocupada por vegetación fue la variable más importante al correlacionarse positivamente con la riqueza y abundancia de las aves. Mientras que el porcentaje de cobertura de dosel, de construcciones, de pavimento y de áreas verdes muestreadas se correlacionaron negativamente con la riqueza y abundancia de aves. La heterogeneidad espacial de la estructura vegetal vertical en las áreas verdes fue importante para incrementar la diversidad de la avifauna. El mantenimiento e incremento de áreas verdes en ciudades es significativo para proteger y aumentar la diversidad de aves en áreas urbanas.

Una de las principales causas de pérdida de biodiversidad es la expansión de la frontera agrícola, así como el uso de químicos. La agricultura orgánica se propone como una alternativa de producción asociada a la conservación de biodiversidad, en este sentido evaluamos la riqueza, abundancia y composición de tres grupos taxonómicos (mariposas diurnas, escarabajos coprófagos y plantas) presentes en tres regiones de Costa Rica en 2009 - 2010, en tres cultivos orgánicos y tres convencionales de café (San José), hortalizas (Alajuela) y cacao y plátano (Talamanca). En cada tipo de cultivo capturamos mariposas, colocamos 20 trampas de caída para capturar escarabajos, establecimos dos parcelas para registrar árboles y hierbas presentes. Los cultivos orgánicos de cacao-banano tuvieron mayor riqueza de mariposas. En promedio las mariposas y escarabajos fueron más abundantes en café y cacao orgánico. En los cultivos orgánicos de hortalizas y cacao-banano hubo mayor abundancia de hierbas. Varios factores favorecen la presencia de estos grupos biológicos en cultivos orgánicos, los cuales proporcionan un hábitat más heterogéneo que los convencionales, evitando el uso de herbicidas y plaguicidas. Además, los cultivos orgánicos pueden desempeñar un papel importante como zonas de paso entre bosques para estos grupos, por tanto el bosque influye en su presencia en los cultivos y la persistencia a largo plazo en la forma en que los agricultores manejan sus tierras. El conocimiento de las rapaces nocturnas en México es limitado; su historia natural, ecología y distribución geográfica son poco conocidas. En el ámbito estatal, existen pocos estudios que mencionan el estado del conocimiento y la distribución de las rapaces nocturnas a una escala espacial fina. Reportamos los resultados de la compilación de registros geográficos históricos (1865 a 2010) y actuales (2011) de rapaces nocturnas en el estado de Hidalgo. En total, reunimos 310 registros pertenecientes a 18 especies. El búho café (Ciccaba virgata) fue la especie que presentó el mayor número de registros (73). La ecorregión con mayor número de especies fue Bosques de Coníferas y Encinos de la Sierra Madre Oriental. Los tipos de vegetación con mayor número de especies de rapaces nocturnas fueron los bosques de pino y bosques de encino. Nuestro análisis indica que el 93% de los registros se han llevado a cabo entre 1996 y 2011, y que se ha puesto mayor esfuerzo de muestreo hacia el norte y centro de la entidad, presentándose falta de información en el oeste, sur y sureste del estado. Este estudio presenta un panorama general sobre el estado del conocimiento que se tiene de la distribución de las rapaces nocturnas en Hidalgo. Esta información puede ser usada en planes de conservación futuros dirigidos a este grupo de aves en el estado.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak to be a pandemic which has sent all countries in a frenzy. We cannot be callous about treatment of non-COVID-19-related patients. The Wardha district of Maharashtra is a declared “dry area” which makes the sale, purchase, and consumption of alcohol illegal. On March 24, 2020, Indians were informed of a 21-day long lockdown which was subsequently extended for another 3 weeks during which all modes of public transportation, educational institutions, offices, and other nonessential businesses were closed and people expected to remain at home unless necessary. Since then admissions of alcohol-dependent patients showed a spike from14% in the prelockdown period to 27% of patients of alcohol dependence syndrome. It is most likely due to poor availability of liquor, inability to earn money to buy the alcohol, or restricted movement of individuals.

Misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic is gradually gaining much popularity and amplifying the threat facing humanity about the continuous spread of the virus regardless of one's location. Although some of the influx of these falsehoods may be harmless, others might pose a serious threat by misleading the general population to depend on unjustified and/unsubstantiated claims for protection and show preference for them against scientifically proven guidelines. This paper provides a clear understanding on some COVID-19 misinformation, the inherent implications this poses to public health in Africa and highlights the potential strategies to curb this trend.

There is a consensus among researchers that one of the most important effects of the recent economic downturn that started in 2009—also known as the Great Recession—in Spain has been rising income inequality. In this context, researchers are concerned about the effects of inequality on the economy, and this concern is even more marked now, when the world is facing a new crisis that seems the equal of, or even more devastating than the last Great Recession as a consequence of Covid-19. Nevertheless, there is a lack of studies which consider the effects of inequality on entrepreneurship. This paper aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between inequality and entrepreneurship in the context of an economic downturn. We focus on the 17 autonomous communities in Spain during the Great Recession (2007–2013). Using unbalanced panel data, we study the effect on entrepreneurial activity, differentiating between total, necessity- and opportunity-driven entrepreneurship. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, our results offer new empirical evidence concerning the relationship between growing inequality and entrepreneurial activity, showing significant differences from results in the existing literature. Second, we explain how, in a recessionary context of highly restricted financial resources, inequality can negatively affect total, necessity- and opportunity-based entrepreneurship, preventing a large part of the population from engaging in this activity.
