                <text>Abstract Background Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), a member of the family Coronaviridae, causes lethal watery diarrhea in piglets. Previous studies have revealed that the coronaviruses develop various strategies to evade the host innate immunity through the inhibition of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. However, the ability of TGEV to inhibit the host innate immune response by modulating the NF-κB signaling pathway is not clear. Methods In this study, a dual luciferase reporter assay was used to confirm the inhibition of NF-κB by TGEV infection and to identify the major viral proteins involved in the inhibition of NF-κB signaling. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to quantify the mRNA expression of inflammatory factors. The deubiquitination of Nsp3 domains and its effect on IκBα and p65 were analyzed by western blotting. The ubiquitination level of IκBα was analyzed by immunoprecipitation. Results In ST and IPEC-J2 cells, TGEV exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of NF-κB activity. Individual TGEV protein screening revealed the high potential of non-structural protein 3 (Nsp3) to inhibit NF-κB signaling, and leading to the downregulation of the NF-κB-induced cytokine production. We demonstrated that the inhibitory effect of Nsp3 was mainly mediated through the suppression of IκBα degradation as well as the inhibition of p65 phosphorylation and nuclear translocation. Furthermore, the amino acid residues at positions 590–1,215 in Nsp3 were demonstrated to inhibit the degradation of IκBα by inhibiting the IκBα ubiquitination. Conclusion TGEV infection can inhibit the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, which is mainly mediated by Nsp3 through the canonical pathway. The amino acid residues at positions 590–1,215 in Nsp3 compose the critical domain that mediates NF-κB inhibition. We speculate that this inhibitory effect is likely to be related to the structure of PLP2 with deubiquitinating enzyme activity of the amino acid residues at positions 590–1,215 in Nsp3. Our study provides a better understanding of the TGEV-mediated innate immune modulation and lays the basis for studies on the pathogenesis of coronavirus.</text>

                <text>The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was first isolated in 2012, and circulated worldwide with high mortality. The continual outbreaks of MERS-CoV highlight the importance of developing antiviral therapeutics. Here, we rationally designed a novel fusion inhibitor named MERS-five-helix bundle (MERS-5HB) derived from the six-helix bundle (MERS-6HB) which was formed by the process of membrane fusion. MERS-5HB consists of three copies of heptad repeat 1 (HR1) and two copies of heptad repeat 2 (HR2) while MERS-6HB includes three copies each of HR1 and HR2. As it lacks one HR2, MERS-5HB was expected to interact with viral HR2 to interrupt the fusion step. What we found was that MERS-5HB could bind to HR2P, a peptide derived from HR2, with a strong affinity value (KD) of up to 0.24 nM. Subsequent assays indicated that MERS-5HB could inhibit pseudotyped MERS-CoV entry effectively with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of about 1 μM. In addition, MERS-5HB significantly inhibited spike (S) glycoprotein-mediated syncytial formation in a dose-dependent manner. Further biophysical characterization showed that MERS-5HB was a thermo-stable α-helical secondary structure. The inhibitory potency of MERS-5HB may provide an attractive basis for identification of a novel inhibitor against MERS-CoV, as a potential antiviral agent.</text>

                <text>To explore the benefits of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), (which is an antimalarial agent that has shown effective pharmacological properties in different malarial conditions and immunological disorders, particularity in chloroquine-sensitive malaria), in the treatment and prevention of Corona Virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic because HCQ was recently advocated to minimize the pathogenicity of COVID-19. The aim of this review is to shed the light on a possible mechanism by which HCQ can defeat the COVID-19, a disease characterized by the WHO as a pandemic. Literatures from Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar were cast-off to search the literature data. The keywords used are antimalarial agent, COVID-19, Hydroxychloroquine, SARS-CoV-2 and Zinc sulfate.The review summarizes the benefits of using HCQ against COVID-19 through exploiting the ability of this antimalarial agent in ameliorating the body immunity, inhibiting and/or delaying the viral glycosylation by increasing the pH inside the host cell and also via suppressing the viral transcription and replication through the formation of a complex structure after binding with zinc. We concluded thatthese interfering properties of HCQ support human immunity to fight against the progression of COVID-19. We hypothesize that the therapeutic efficiency of HCQ against the COVID-19 can be enhanced by the concurrent administration of zinc sulfate.</text>

                <text>RESUMENCon el objetivo de evaluar la emisión de inflorescencias en el germoplasma de malanga isleña (104 accesiones) en  las condiciones climáticas de Cuba, se desarrolló una investigación en el Instituto de Investigaciones de Viandas Tropicales (INIVIT). Durante los  años 2013-2014 se realizaron muestreos cada 7 días para evaluar emisión de inflorescencias, se caracterizaron las accesiones de acuerdo con  los descriptores relacionados con las inflorescencias. Los resultados apuntan a  la floración natural del  de 26 accesiones (25 %), de ellas  18 (69,2%)  florecen precozmente  en los meses de julio hasta octubre, en los que hay un incremento de temperatura y la humedad relativa período a partir del cual se reduce la emisión de inflorescencias hasta noviembre cuando culmina el proceso de floración.Flowering of Malanga isleña germplasm (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schoot in Cuba ABSTRACTIn order to evaluate the emission of inflorescences in the Malanga isleña  germplasm (104 accessions) in the climatic conditions of Cuba, an investigation was conducted in the Research Institute of Tropical Root and Tubers Crops (INIVIT).                 <text>En el mundo hoy, no constituye un problema la cantidad de clones de malanga que emiten inflorescencias ni la disponibilidad del polen que producen ni la viabilidad del mismo, pero en Cuba la emisión de inflorescencia es de vital importancia, las accesiones con más rendimiento no son precisamente, las que emiten inflorescencias, lo hacen muy rara o ninguna vez y cuando lo hacen, casi nunca producen polen y pocas veces éste resulta viable. Por tal razón el objetivo de nuestra investigación es evaluar la fertilidad y viabilidad del polen en las accesiones de malanga (Colocasia esculenta). Se evaluaron las accesiones conservada en el germoplasma de esta especie conservada en el Instituto de Investigaciones de Viandas tropicales (INIVIT), en el período comprendido entre diciembre de 2015 a diciembre de 2016. Se seleccionaron 19 accesiones por emitir inflorescencia en condiciones de campo a las que se le realizó la Prueba de Tinción o viabilidad de polen de Gelatina de Acetocarmín Glicerol.  El resultado se expresó como el porcentaje respecto al número total de granos de polen, se empleó el descriptor basado en los rangos de viabilidad de polen para determinar si las accesiones pueden ser utilizadas como parentales masculinos en los programas de mejoramiento del cultivo y se determinó que cinco de las 19 accesiones evaluadas producen polen viable, las cuales permiten considerarlas como progenitores masculinos potenciales en el programa de mejoramiento genético por hibridación de esta especie.</text>

                <text>Este trabajo tuvo como propósito evaluar la efectividad de las diferentes dosis de un biofertilizante foliar sobre el rendimiento del cultivo de frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris) en época de postrera, en la comunidad El Cañal, Kukra River, Bluefields, en el ciclo productivo 2008-2009. Se utilizó un diseño completo al azar, cuatro tratamientos con dos repeticiones, cada repetición constó de 63 plantas de frijol (n=126). Los tratamientos fueron: T1 (testigo); T2: 0.25 litros de biofertilizante; T3: 0.37 lt. y T4: 0.5 lt. En todos los tratamientos, incluyendo al testigo, se hizo deshierbe y en todos, excepto el testigo, se aplicó el biofertilizante disuelto en 10 litros de agua. Se realizaron tres mediciones (21, 36 y 51 días) después de la siembra.Los resultados indican que no existen diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos en la altura de las plantas, pero si en el porcentaje de afectación por herbívoros, así como en el número de vainas por planta y de granos por vaina. El tratamiento T4 registró el menor ataque por herbívoros, la mayor producción en función del número de vainas por planta, de granos por vaina y peso total de los granos de frijol, en cambio el testigo fue el que registró el menor rendimiento con respecto a todas estas variables. El uso del biofertilizante foliar aumentó el rendimiento del cultivo de frijol en todas las dosis.SummaryThe aim of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of different doses of a foliar biofertilizer on crop production of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) throughout season time in the community of El Cañal, Kukra River, Bluefields, during the production cycle 2008-2009. A random design was used, four treatments with two replications, each replication consisted of 63 bean plants (n=126). The treatments were: T1 (baton), T2: 0.25 liters of biofertilizer, T3: 0.37 lt. and T4: 0.5 lt.  In all the treatments, including the baton, weeding was done, and in all except the baton, biofertilizer was applied dissolved in 10 liters of water. Three measurements were made (21, 36 and 51 days) after planting.The results indicate no significant differences between treatments in the height of the plants, but it does in the percentage of affectation by herbivores, as well as in the number of pods per plant and grains per pod. The T4 treatment had the lowest attack by herbivores, the highest production by the number of pods per plant, grains per pod and weight of grains of beans; while the baton registered the lowest production on all these variables. The use of the foliar biofertilizer increased the production of bean crop in all dosages.</text>

Materiales y Métodos: Se consultó la literatura disponible relacionada con la agronomía, agroecología y aplicación en  la  producción  y  la  salud  animal  de  las  especies  Moringa  oleifera  Lam., Tithonia  diversifolia  Hemsl.,  A.  Gray,  Morus alba L., Trichanthera gigantea H. y B. y Cratylia argentea Desv., con el propósito de analizar los resultados obtenidos en los sistemas convencionales de agricultura y ganadería a nivel internacional y en Cuba. Resultados: Existe variabilidad en las condiciones de manejo, procesamiento y conservación del forraje de M. oleifera, T. diversifolia, M. alba, T. gigantea y C. argentea. Sus contenidos de proteína bruta oscilan entre 13 y 33 %. Se siembran en densidades entre 555 y 1 000 000 plantas/ha. El rendimiento varía entre 3 y 35 t MS/ha/año, y son abundantes durante el período poco lluvioso. Con estas especies se pueden obtener entre 5 y 7 kg leche/animal/día y la ganancia de peso animal puede superar los 500 g/animal/día.Conclusiones:  Por  su  adaptación  a  las  condiciones  agrícolas  de  Cuba,  disponibilidad  de  biomasa  durante  todo  el  año y valor nutritivo, M. oleifera, T. diversifolia, M. alba, T. gigantea y C. argentea constituyen recursos forrajeros de calidad, con potencialidades para suplementar a los animales y mejorar su salud; además, de proteger el suelo y disminuir la emisión de metano al medio.</text>

                <text>El área foliar es un rasgo funcional que tiene relación con el crecimiento de las plantas y el conocimiento de sus patrones de variación es importante para muchos estudios en ecología. En este trabajo, se seleccionaron 13 especies de árboles que han sido registradas en el bosque seco del Caribe colombiano. De un individuo de cada especie se recolectaron al menos 15 hojas para medir su área (AF), el largo (L) y el ancho (A). La relación entre el AF y las dimensiones L y A como variables predictoras, se analizó para cada especie mediante regresión lineal con las variables transformadas logarítmicamente, para seleccionar el de mejor ajuste estadístico. Adicionalmente, los datos fueron agrupados en siete categorías (hojas compuestas, simples, con área mayor o menor de 50 cm², mayor o menor de 100 cm² y total) para elaborar modelos que pudieran servir para estimar el AF de otras especies fno consideradas en la muestra. Se encontró que existe una relación lineal positiva entre los logaritmos del AF y del producto de L*A, tanto para las especies como para las categorías de especies. Los errores de predicción (EP%) de todos los modelos fueron en general menores al ± 1%, mostrando que son adecuados para estimar el AF para cada especie o categorías de especies. Particularmente el modelo lineal para todas las especies In (AF) = -1,80 + 0,967 ln (L*A) (r2 = 99,5%, p &lt; 0.001) muestra que es adecuado para realizar una estimación del AF de cualquiera de las especies de bosque tropical seco.</text>

                <text>To describe an innovative approach for developing and implementing an in-service curriculum in China for staff of the newly established health emergency response offices (HEROs), and that is generalisable to other settings.The multi-method training needs assessment included reviews of the competency domains needed to implement the International Health Regulations (2005) as well as China's policies and emergency regulations. The review, iterative interviews and workshops with experts in government, academia, the military, and with HERO staff were reviewed critically by an expert technical advisory panel.Over 1600 participants contributed to curriculum development. Of the 18 competency domains identified as essential for HERO staff, nine were developed into priority in-service training modules to be conducted over 2.5 weeks. Experts from academia and experienced practitioners prepared and delivered each module through lectures followed by interactive problem-solving exercises and desktop simulations to help trainees apply, experiment with, and consolidate newly acquired knowledge and skills.This study adds to the emerging literature on China's enduring efforts to strengthen its emergency response capabilities since the outbreak of SARS in 2003. The multi-method approach to curriculum development in partnership with senior policy-makers, researchers, and experienced practitioners can be applied in other settings to ensure training is responsive and customized to local needs, resources and priorities. Ongoing curriculum development should reflect international standards and be coupled with the development of appropriate performance support systems at the workplace for motivating staff to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills effectively and creatively.</text>
