<text>The article presents the adaptation effort, application and description of the 'Research Focus' (FREIRE, 1975) associated with Pedagogical Moments (DELIZOICOV, 1991) as a basis for the development of rural extension programs - a combination hitherto used only in the area of science education. The study was conducted with rural communities in Biguaçu, on the coast of Santa Catarina, with the initial goal to understand the reasons for the low participation of the population in the activities proposed by extension agents as well as rural conflicts between families. We point out the 'market' as a unifying theme, which synthesizes a set of 'generative themes': a) permanent preservation areas and forest - including the clandestine production of charcoal hitherto ignored by the technical assistance agencies, b) the intensive pesticides on some crops, c) food security; d) technical assistance. We conclude that the failure to address issues of the population is a major cause of low participation and suggest a sample program to start work from the generator theme related to the forest. Based on discussions generated during the research and developments of the proposed topic in activities that include field experiments with forest and cassavas, dialogue with environmental agencies, legalization of activity charcoal and search for differentiated markets, we conclude that the approach is, of indeed, the potential for rural extension work and alerted to the need for in-service training and insertion of this type of content in the curriculum of agricultural sciences.</text>

Organic systems were evaluated for cassava root production directed to human comsumption in natura, at Seropédica-RJ. Treatments consisted of: cassava ('IAC 576-70') in single cropping and its intercropping with corn ('Eldorado'), cowpea ('Mauá') or corn plus cowpea. The organic management was standardized and the experimental area was submitted to artificial irrigation during the period of stay of maize in the system. 'Green' (immature) corn ears were harvested at the 'point' required for fresh marketing and the shoot placed on the ground. The cowpea was included to function as green manure being cut at flowering with residues left on the soil surface. Corn and cowpea were sown between cassava rows, in an alternate design, following the first weeding of the main crop (cassava). The cultivar IAC 576-70 showed suitability with respect to organic management, yielding approximatelu 31 Mg ha-1 of marketable roots. No significant differences were detected between cassava single cropping and any of the intercropping tested systems. Thus, corn crop has considerable potential for additional income to the growers. Yield of 'Eldorado' corn averaged 18.125 ears ha-1 correspponding to 5,1 Mg ha-1. Residues coming from cowpea cutting brought about an input close to 12 Mg ha-1, which meant an expressive contribution in nutrient elements, especially nitrogen (about 44 kg N ha-1). The legume crop, in addition, completely covered cassava inter-rows demonstrating its potential for controlling erosion and weeds. The triple intercropping becomes advantageous considering that corn harvesting would justify irrigation and that inclusion of cowpea meant benefitial effects to the system and did not interfere on cassava yield.</text>

This paper discusses the methodology of an ergonomic intervention applied on dairy family farming production units (FFPU) based in Western France. Contents include a description of the methodology, the combination of observation sessions and work analysis, as well as learning-action sessions. The Action's Chronicle and the Plan of Buildings Destination (PBD) are analyzed considering their influence on farmer's awareness about the complexity of dairy production activity. Since herd monitoring is a very complex practice and has huge impact on milk productivity, the influence of herd spatial distribution on working conditions is considered carefully. The complexity theory approach is applied in order to identify the causes, the sources of variability and the strategies adopted by dairy farmers.</text>

<text>The term 'organically grown food' denotes products that have been produced in accordance with the principles and practices of organic agriculture. The use of alternatives to synthetic fertilizers is an important issue in organic systems. A two-year field experiment to evaluate effects of organic fertilizers on the yield and quality of open field grown tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) was carried out in Southern Turkey in 2000 and 2001. Combinations of manure, blood flour and micronutrient preparations were used for fertilization, and conventional mineral fertilization was included as the control. Yield did not differ between the fertilization and the Conventional treatments in the first year of the study, but the highest yield was obtained from conventional in the second year. No differences were found between treatments in terms of fruit soluble sugar content or citric acid. The application of organic fertilizers positively affected the micronutritional element content of tomato fruits compared to the conventional treatment. Organic fertilization results in improved yield and fruit quality compared to conventional fertilization. In addition, organic fertilization should be supported in order to facilitate reuse and disposal of organic wastes and to maintain and/or increase soil fertility.O termo 'alimentos cultivados organicamente' denota produtos que tenham sido produzidos em conformidade com os princípios e práticas da agricultura orgânica.

Suspensions of 106 and 108 cells/mL for each of the strains studied and applied in two separate trials: the first with seeds and the second with seedlings 35 days of age gliricidia. In the seed test is calculated the cumulative percentage of germination for 7 days. In both trials after 42 days in seeds and seedlings 52 days in length was measured and stem diameter, leaf number, dry weight of aerial parts, number of nodules/plant and percentage of nitrogen. All treatments stimulated germination, growth and BNF, being better in the native strains at a concentration of 108 cells/mL, compared with the commercial strain and the control. These results indicate the positive effect exerted by <em>Rhizobium </em>sp., in promoting growth and BNF, which could be used for further studies to establish the production of a biofertilizer, allowing potentiate the production of crops by gliricidia for food arich cattle as source of protein in the Caribbean Biotechnology Center.</span></span></span></p></text>

<text>The food processing activities have emerged as important issues within the RuralDevelopment area, especially in the mid-1990s. When considering the history, these activities haveevolved over time. Farmers have adopted new practices and processes influenced by a set ofknowledge and technical skills. This article aims to present a proposal for a typology to characterizethe trajectory of food processing activities, using as empirical context reality four regions of RioGrande do Sul, Brazil. 64 families were interviewed (family farmers) who process food, using asemi-structured form, observations and field diaries to collect data. For data analysis, we used thequalitative technique called content analysis that guided the construction of typologies. Fourdistinct groups of families were identified, which depict the diversity of their trajectories. The maindifferences between the groups is relate to: the objectives of the families, the way started andchanged the production, by using technical knowledge. The typology allows greater knowledgeabout the 'universe' diversity that characterizes these activities in Rio Grande do Sul, contributingto the reflection on the interventions advocated by the programs and policies for family farming.</text>
