The objective was phytotechnical characterization of fruits, assess the effect of removing the husk of the seed, the influence of GA3 and growth promoter (Stimulate®) on the germination of seeds of rootstock Flying Dragon and citrumelo Swingle. The phytotechnical characterization included the weight of the fruit, transverse and longitudinal diameter and thickness of the 'peel' and the counting of viable and unviable seeds per fruit. There was an experiment for each rootstock in green house under intermitent mist and the evaluations were every 3 days after the beginning of the germination process, there is percentage of germination and germination speed. The use of GA3 and removal of seed husk of the rootstock Flying Dragon increase the germination percentage and germination speed, and the rootstock citrumelo Swingle removal of the husk of seeds increase the germination percentage and the germination speed.</text>

<text>Introduction: food servings are standard amounts of food stuffs or drinks to help dietetic advice to promote and preserve health. The aim is to establish the serving size of fruits and vegetables (FH) to be used in food based dietary guidelines (FBDG). Material and methods: Methodology of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was adapted to establish serving sizes for FBDG, along of the followed by the food exchange system. Data was collected from the FH portion sizes reported in nutritional surveys and common sizes available in the Spanish market, and they were adjusted to an easily recognisable quantities of food with equivalence on key nutrients: the compliance with public health goals for FH consumption was evaluated. Results: Portion sizes typically reported in Spanish nutrition surveys are scarce and not homogeneous, and no data published in scientific journals on portion sizes were available. The Spanish FBDG, in spite of showing a range of serving size for FH, do not assure that they are interchangeable nor specify the method to obtein them. The serving of vegetables was 139,44 g (DS:± 21.98, CV: 0.16), 137,68 g (DS:± 49,61, CV: 0,36) for fruits and 28.00 g (DS:± 7,53, CV: 0.,27) for dried fruits. Conclusions: With the established servings, the recommendation of consuming at least 5 servings of FH a day' would allow reaching the Public Health goals for FH established in 600 g (net weight) / person / day. It is recommended that the Spanish Agency for Consumers, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN) uses this methodology to establish serving sizes for the rest of food groups that make up the FBDG for the Spanish population.</text>

The environmental problems that affect the Peruvian Amazonia due to extractive commercial activities are of such magnitude that make necessary to look for new sustainable development strategies. One of these is the one applied by CARE-PERU in her project 'Comunidades Amazónicas y la Sostenibilidad de su Producción' (CASPI); which involves sorne 400 families in 12 comunities living between the Amazon, the Tamshiyacu and Tahuayo rivers. In this research I only report the results of a soil, vegetation, and land use inventory made within the CASPI project. These results are heavily based on the Knowledge that the native population has of these issues. The objective was to design a new methodology to make inventories of the natural resources in the Amazon forest, based on communal participation.</text>

The treatments were a mixture of twochemical pesticides (Chlorothalonil and Pyraclostrobin) and a biological one (Bacillus subtilis) with andwithout fertilizers. In total there were 16 treatments with 3 repetitions, installed in a CCN-51commercial cocoa farms and under a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The results showedthat the use of fungicides (chemical and biological), decreased the incidence of 'moniliasis'(Moniliophthora roreri), 'brown spot' (Phytophthora spp.) and 'cherelle wilt'; but the application offertilizers did not increase the effectiveness of these products. The treatment only agricultural laborsdid not decrease the final incidence of 'moniliasis', nor of the 'brown rot'; instead, the final incidenceof 'cherelle wilt' increased. The number of cocoa fruits and yield were not directly related and thehighest yield of dry cocoa beans corresponded to T2 [Agricultural labors + Clorotalonil (1 kg ha-1) (c/15days) + Pyraclostrobin (0.5 kg.ha-1) (c/90 days) + Fertilizers (0.4 kg.ha-1) + organic fertilizer (2kg/planta)], which also had the highest net income/ha.</text>

<text>Family Farming is an important topic in the research agenda, considering its social and economic roles.  This study aims at describing the academic production of the author Ana Elisa Bressan Lourenzani Smith, who, throughout her academic career, has developed research on this topic. Therefore, we carried out a descriptive study, with a choice of bibliographical research for data collection. The documents were collected from international databases and scientific events, considering the variables “titles” and “keywords” that contained the terms 'family farming' and/or 'smallholder', objectives of the published papers, and the objects of discussion. The results showed that the author has published 07 full articles in journals and 16 in scientific events. The most commonly used objects of discussion were public policies aimed at marketing access, marketing channels, marketing strategies, collective actions and rural development. It has been observed that the author has contributed to understanding strategies adopted by farmers with regard to market access and the role of public policy.</text>

<text>Chemical fertilisers are rarely avaiable to poor farmers, for whom the nitrogen (N) is often the most limiting element for cereal grain production. The objective of this study was to quantify the contribution of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) to groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) and velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) crops using the 15N natural abundance (delta15N) technique and to determine their residual effect and that of a natural fallow, on growth and N accumulation by two rustic maize varieties. The contribution of BNF calculated from delta15N data was 40.9, 59.6 and 30.9 kg ha-1, for groundnut, velvet bean and the natural fallow, respectively. The only legume grain harvested was from the groundnut, which yielded approximately 1.000 kg ha-1. The subsequent maize varieties ('Sol de Manhã' and 'Caiana Sobralha') yielded between 1.958 and 2.971 kg ha-1, and were higher after velvet bean for both maize varieties and 'Sol da Manhã' groundnut, followed by 'Caiana' after groundnut and, finally, the natural fallow. For a small-holder producer the most attractive system is the groundnut followed by maize, as, in this treatment, both groundnut and maize grain harvest are possible. However, a simple N balance calculation indicated that the groundnut-maize sequence would, in the long term, deplete soil N reserves, while the velvet bean-maize sequence would lead to a build up of soil nitrogen.

<text>The objective of the study was to characterize the 'rice' production plots, a concerted survey of 50 questions used was, ofwhich 35 questions related were to the socio-economic component and 15 related to the environmental component. Amultivariate analysis carried out was to form groups or clusters, whose purpose was to group the plots and formconglomerates (clusters) with a high degree of internal homogeneity and external heterogeneity. For the processing of thedata, the statistical software Info Stat used. Was Among the most important results, it was found that the majority ofproducers own their plots, sow between 0.5 to 5 hectares, the yield of grain rice is between 5 000 to 8 000 kg/ha and all doconventional agriculture. The conglomerate analysis classifies the plots into 6 groups, the producers of conglomerate 1 sharethe greatest number of variables (21), having in common the variables: ownership of the plot, use of chemical fertilizers, burning of weeds and harvest residues, use of agrochemicals. The producers of conglomerate 5 have 12 variables incommon, among them: they do not incorporate organic matter, they do not rotate crops, they do not use biological control, and they do not use repellents. It recommended is to promote the rotation and association of crops under the diversityprinciple; likewise, to promote the self-sustained fertility of the soil, and to include in the productive process, the integratedmanagement of insect pests and phytopathogens.</text>
