The properties of the black coloured paramosoil, wich probably is not a uniform type, are discussed. Its micromorphology and fauna were examined for the first time. The fauna is well developed and takes part intensivily in mixing the mineral and organic components. The soil type is classified as being between those which KUBIENA (1953) called 'Pechtorf' and 'Moderranker', The vegetation has been characterized by the estimation of the 'Artmächtigkeit' (BRAUN-BLANQUET,1964) of the single species. The distribution and net production of Espeletia grandiflora Humb. & Bonpl., the most specificplant species in this paramo is discussed. The quantitative sampling of the fauna, especially of the arthropod fauna,was carried out by means of a combination of different methods to evaluate the density per litre and the density of activity. The mantle consisting of dead leaves of E. grandiflora proved to be a rich and characteristic 'biotope'. The facts are discussed partly by comparing them with correspondingfacts from a tropical rain forest.In a paramo region near Bogotá (Colombia), 3.230 m above seal evel investigations were made of clima, soil vegetation and fauna. The mean temperature was 8.4 degrees C and the annual rainfall 1.221.4 mm.

                <text>We tested the influence of the aril on seed germination in controlled conditions and on the removal of M. champaca seeds in natural environment. Germination assays were kept at 25 ± 2 °C under continuous white light. Removal experiments were carried out in three 'old' (39 to 62-years old) and three 'new' (15-years old) eucalypt stands in Horto Florestal Navarro de Andrade, Rio Claro, SP. The results show that the aril inhibits the germination and the seeds exhibit a positively photoblastic reaction. We found higher seed removal in old eucalypt stands than the new ones, probably due to the higher density of rodents in the old stands. In the new stands, we found higher seed removal of arillated seeds by ants. Ants are important to remove the aril of seeds dropped by birds, not only enhancing seed germination but also preventing seed predation by rodents.

</text>

Rotation crops + organic fertilizer. (Farming); 3. Rotation from improved praire. (Minimum till + chemical fertilizer); 4. Conventional rotation. (Chemical Farming + chemical fertilizer); 5. Rotation crops + legumes. (Chemical Farming + chemical fertilizer); 6. Rotation from improved praire. (Chemical Farming + chemical fertilizer). These treatments established as run–off plots during eight years were exposed without vegetation to the impact of rains during 10 months, which were compared to the reference plots whose original to praire was 15 years old. To evaluate the structural stability the test of turbidimetría was used. The results appeared like the area under the curve (AUC) for the dispersion variable (%), which was lower for the aggregates taken from the surface of virgin soils (Treatment 1) and rotation of crops plus minimum till (Treatment 3). The rotation treatment with addition of organic chicken manure (3 t/ha) and covers of legumes presented the higher values.
