The present work aims to contribute to the characterization of forest resource use in rural settlements, taking as the case of study the settlement Horto Vergel in Mogi-Mirim, São Paulo State. For data collection, partially structured interviews were used, along with direct observation in the field. The farmers interviewed were randomly sampled and represented 42,63% from the total population of the settlement. The results obtained indicated that most farmers interviewed in the Settlement '12 de Outubro' (81,4%) use forestry resources on some scale, but not in a proper way, which can lead to the depletion of these resources in a medium term. Such resources are used for coal and wood production, as well the selling of eucalyptus stumps, essential oil production from leaves, incipient beekeeping activities and seed collection for tree seedling production. In general, forest resources are seen as secondary and supporting, or even antagonist elements for abidance in the land.</text>

In this introduction we focus on the role that theories play in the construction of evolutionary thinking. First, we briefly show the importance of Lamarck's work in the context of pre-Darwinian theories about organic evolution. Then, the main components of the Darwinian theoretical core and its postDarwinian extensions are thoroughly discussed. Finally the essays following this introduction in the present issue are summarized.

This paper presents the results of out door catches of Culicidae mosquitoes performed in the Ribeira Valley, State of S. Paulo, Brazil, where an outbreak of encephalits occurred in 1976 and 1977. These entomological investigations were made using several techniques for collecting mosquitoes, including human bait. Several places were chosen considering the environmental aspects related to human activities. In regions where high agricultural activities predominate and the primary forest was reduced to remaining spots, large numbers of Aedes serratus, Aedes scapularis and Culex (Melanoconion) sp. were caught. These mosquitoes were scarcely found in primary forest regions where no human cases of encephalitis occurred. These aspects suggest their participation in virus transmission. Beside this, other species, mainly Limatus and Psorophora, may possibly act as vectors, although with less epidemiological significance. It was noted that the scarcity of Aedes in the forest of the 'Serra do Mar' system may be a cyclic phenomenon, as was pointed out in other investigations. This circunstance may explain the apparent barrier role to the epidemic that this mountain system seems to fulfill.</text>

Spontaneous colonies of Triatoma infestans, T. sordida and Rhodnius neglectus developed in experimental fowlhouses were observed for the conditions under which they developed, their variations, permanence, annual cycles and survival. Of nine of these colonies three were mixed, one of them with T. infestans and T. sordida and two with T. sordida and R. neglectus. For all the triatomine species the colonies' development showed a cyclic rhythm with an increase of the production of adults in the first semester of the year. For T. sordida this production was particularly high in the first three or four months of the year, followed by a similar pattern of females findings in the dwellings. An active dispersal capacity in T. infestans was demonstrated by the adults findings in the ecotopes surrounding dwellings. This cyclic dynamic of the colonies permits identification of the 'infestant' period for the 'susceptible' domiciliary environment represented by the cleaned dwellings. The reinfestation risk from extradomiciliary T. sordida and R. neglectus occurs at this time. At the same time, if there are previously developed T. infestans colonies in this environment, they may be dispersed to other new dwellings. The information will be of use in epidemiological surveillance.</text>

Camu camu is one of the native fruits with a great economic potential for agroindustry and agro exportation. Edessa is one camu camu pest that produces in dry buds and fruits with a mark decolorated with concentric circles well marked and a central point when they feed. The aim of the current research was to determinate the biological cycle under laboratory conditions and population fluctuations of Edessa aff. aulacosterna. 'Camu camu fruit stink bug' during January to November, 2004 in camu-camu culture, in development and production parcels located in flooded areas of restinga in Pucallpa, Ucayali, Peru. Eggs, nymphs and adults were colected to begin artificial rearing proceeding of distrit of Yarinacocha, Pucallpa, Ucayali, Peru. Development time of eggs to 1th nymphal instar was 5.1 days. 94.6% of egg hatchability, varied between 12 until 14 egg-laying was found. The time passed since eggs until III nymphal instar was 37.3 días and of III to V nymphal instar was de 81.9 days. Percentage of mortality of 2nd nymphal instar to adult was 98,1%. Adults collected were localized mainly on branches and stem of the plants, while nymphs were found in delicated buds. In relation to seasonal populations only were registered eggs laying throught the year in parcels in production. Differences between nymphs I to V and adults of Edessa aff. aulacosterna, in production and development plantations were not found. Only differences in dry and wet period in III to V nymphs instar in development camu camu plants were found. Edessa aff. aulacosterna mainly presented a contagious distribution. Suitable knowledge of bioecology of Edessa aff. aulacosterna permit improves strategy of pest control.</text>
