                <text>We present an analysis of behavioral flexibility in a day-active caviomorph rodent, the degu, Octodon degus, in response to temporal (daily and seasonal), spatial, and thermal heterogeneity of its environment. We quantified activity and foraging behavior in a population, together with thermal conditions, in an open habitat in the seasonally hot and arid matorral of central Chile. Summer activity was bimodal, with a gap of more than 8 h between the morning bout of 2.5 h of intensive foraging and the afternoon bout of 2 h. More than half of the 4.5 h of summer activity occurred in the shade of early morning or late afternoon when the sun was below the local skyline. Autumn and spring activity were also bimodal, but with greater proportions of activity under direct solar radiation, and with a shorter midday gap between the two major bouts. Winter activity was unimodal and all occurred under direct solar radiation. In summer, autumn, and spring the activity of degus was curtailed as our index of operative temperature, Te, moved above 40 ºC. We used a single measurement of Te (measured in a thermal mannequin representing degu size, shape and surface properties) as an index of the interactive effects of solar radiation and convection on body temperature. At the winter solstice (June), when degus remained fully exposed to solar radiation throughout the day, Te generally remained below 30 ºC. Flexibility in the timing of surface activity allows degus to maintain thermal homeostasis and energy balance throughout the year. Degus shift the times of daily onset and end of activity and the number of major bouts (unimodal or bimodal) over the course of the year. They remain active on the surface under a much narrower range or 'window' of thermal conditions than those that occur over the entire broad range of the day and yearPresentamos un análisis de la flexibilidad conductual en la actividad diaria del degu (Octodon degus), un roedor caviomorfo, en respuesta a la heterogeneidad del ambiente temporal (diario y estacional), espacial y térmico. Junto con las condiciones térmicas, cuantificamos la conducta de actividad y forrajeo en una población que vive en un hábitat abierto en el matorral árido y estacional de Chile central. La actividad de verano fue bimodal, con 2,5 h de actividad de forrajeo intenso durante la mañana y con 2 h durante la tarde. No hubo actividad por mas de 8 h entre ambos eventos. Las familias más afectadas son aquellas más vulnerables a la degradación del medio ambiente, que viven en malas condiciones sanitarias, de contaminación y superpoblación; cuando esto se asocia al grupo materno infantil la vulnerabilidad queda reforzada. Si importante es la cantidad de personas con subnutrición y desnutrición, también lo es definir: quiénes son, dónde están, los alimentos que suelen consumir y las causas del problema - soluciones. Nuestra caracterización de los posibles grupos vulnerables en Brasil sigue dos perspectivas: datos relacionados con la pobreza y los criterios para la clasificación de grupos vulnerables de la FAO (perspectiva que refiere criterios personales, pues no existen abordajes de este tipo en la literatura científica). La alta concentración de renta de Brasil hace que los pobres tengan escasos recursos para comprar una cesta básica de alimentos, implicando mayor vulnerabilidad. Se pueden observar diferencias entre: áreas urbanas y rurales, áreas no-metropolitanas y metropolitanas, y entre las regiones nordeste y norte en relación con las demás. Cabe destacar las importantes influencias étnicas, culturales y migratorias que sobre estos grupos de personas pesan y que los hacen vulnerables.The more exposed people to Food and Nutritional Insecurity comprise the list of the 'dispossessed'. The most affected families are the ones more vulnerable to environment degradation, living in bad sanitary conditions, contamination and high demographic rates; when this is associated to the maternal and children group vulnerability becomes more accentuated. The quantification of malnourished and undernourished people is as important as determining who they are, where they are, their food habits and the causes and solutions for the problem. Our definition of possible vulnerable groups in Brazil follows two perspectives: poverty related data and FAO's vulnerable group classification (perspectives containing personal criteria, for there are no approaches of the type in scientific literature). High income concentration in Brazil results that the poor have insufficient resources to buy food implying in more vulnerability. There are differences between: urban and rural areas, metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, and between the Northeast and Northern regions as related to other regions. There are important ethnic, cultural and migration factors involving the more vulnerable groups.</text>

El área de distribución actual en la porción del valle de México y Toluca se ha visto reducida, por lo que este parque representa un refugio para la especie. Sin embargo, se conoce poco de la biología del mexcalpique. Presentamos datos sobre su dieta y hábitos alimentarios. El estudio se realizó en el Lago Acoyotongo del Parque Nacional Lagunas de Zempoala mediante muestreos estacionales. La identificación del contenido estomacal (97 ejemplares) se llevó hasta el taxón más específico posible. Para la cuantificación se utilizaron los métodos numérico y frecuencia de aparición. La dieta general de esta especie se encuentra constituida por doce componentes alimenticios, de los cuales once son de origen animal. Himenópteros, colémbolos y quironómidos fueron los que presentaron los mayores porcentajes de ingestión y preferencia. Girardinichthys multiradiatus, locally known as 'mexcalpique', is a small endemic fish of the Lerma river basin. Its presence in lakes (Zempoala) suggests a long-standing connection between these lakes and the river basin. The current range of this species in the Mexico and Toluca valley appears to have been reduced, making this park a refuge for the species. Nevertheless, little is known about its biology. We studied its diet and feeding habits in Acoyotongo Lake, Lagunas de Zempoala National Park (19°01’30'-19°06’ N, 99°16’20'-99°21’ W) where seasonal collections were carried out. The gut contents of 97 specimens were identified to the most specific taxonomic category possible and analyzed with numeric and frequency of occurrence methods. The general diet of this species consists of twelve dietary components, eleven of which are of animal origin. Hymenopterans, springtails and chironomids represented the highest percentage of ingestion and preference. G. multiradiatus is as a carnivorous species with entomophagous tendencies. Rev. Biol. En Urabá y el Magdalena (Colombia), las principales regiones exportadoras de banano en Colombia, esta enfermedad provoca una destrucción estimada en 16.5ha/año. La bacteria presenta un nivel extremadamente alto de variación genética que afecta las medidas de control. Este es el primer estudio de su variación en Colombia y se hizo con los marcadores moleculares AFLP en una población de 100 aislamientos de plantas de banano, suelos y arvenses. El alto nivel de diversidad genética, con índices de Nei y de Shannon de h=0,32 y I=0,48, respectivamente, y la AMOVA, demostró que esta población es subestructurada (Fst=0,66): el hospedero es el principal factor de diferenciación. The banana moko disease, caused by the bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum, is one of the most important phytopathological problems of the banana agribusiness in tropical countries. In Uraba and Magdalena (Colombia), the main exporting regions of banana in Colombia, this disease causes a destruction estimated in 16.5ha/year. The bacterium presents an extremely high level of genetic variation that affects control measures. This is the first study of its variation in Colombia and was done with AFLP molecular markers on a population of 100 isolates from banana plants, soils and 'weeds'.                 <text>En Antofagasta, norte de Chile, coexisten dos especies de ostreros: Haematopus palliatus pitanay (ostrero blanco) y Haematopus ater (ostrero negro). Ambas especies depredan en un sistema rocoso intermareal peculiar cuya franja media se encuentra dominada por el tunicado Pyura praeputialis (= Pyura stolonifera bradleyi; Kott 1997). En la literatura se discute sobre las diferencias morfológicas del pico (largo y ancho) entre ambos tipos de ostreros. Dichas diferencias podrían segregar los roles de forrajeo de estas aves cuando comparten un mismo hábitat: los ostreros blancos atacarían preferentemente a presas de textura 'blanda' y los ostreros negros atacarían presas de textura 'dura' (i.e. cobertura calcárea). En este trabajo se consideró a P. praeputialis (piure de Antofagasta) como una presa de textura 'blanda', ya que su tunica, compuesta por tunicina, es suave y flexible. En el estudio se comparan diversos aspectos ecológicos entre ambas especies de ostrero tales como: (a) abundancia de ostreros y de otras aves costeras que depredan sobre P. praeputialis, (b) distribución espacial de los ostreros en el manto de piure durante sus actividades de depredación, (c) tallas de piures preferidos, (d) tiempos de manipulación, (e) tasa de consumo y (f) frecuencia de consumo de otros invertebrados distintos del piure. Los resultados señalan a H. palliatus pitanay como la especie de ostrero que ataca con mayor frecuencia a P. praeputialis. Por otra parte, H. ater ataca con mayor frecuencia presas de textura 'dura' como: lapas, caracoles, choritos, erizosAt Antofagasta, northern Chile, two oystercatcher species coexist: the white oystercatcher, Haematopus palliatus pitanay and the black oystercatcher H. ater. Both species forage on an intertidal system where the middle fringe is dominated by the tunicate Pyura praeputialis (= Pyura stolonifera bradleyi; Kott 1997). According to the literature, differences in the morphology of their bills (length and width) segregate the foraging roles of white and black oystercatchers when the birds coexist in the same habitat. H. palliatus pitanay is best adapted for capturing soft bodied preys, while black oystercatcher H. ater attack 'hard' preys (i.e. preys with calcareous shells). We consider here that the tunicate P. praeputialis as a soft bodied prey because the tunic, composed of tunicine, is soft and pliable. We compare ecological aspects between the two oystercatchers species in Antofagasta, such as: (a) abundance of oystercatchers and other coastal birds preying on P. praeputialis, (b) the spatial distribution of the oystercatchers in the Pyura bed during foraging periods, (c) Pyura size preferences of oystercatchers, (d) handling time, (e) consumption rate and (f) preference of other invertebrates prey items distinct from Pyura. The results show that H. palliatus pitanay attacks more frequently Pyura than H. ater, and that H. ater attacks more frequently 'hard' preys such as: limpets, snails, mussels and sea urchins.</text>

                <text>Isla del Caño is a marine protected area on the south Pacific coast of Costa Rica, surrounded by coral reefs and coral communities. The ecology of these coral reefs has been studied for over 20 years, but they have not been mapped. Maps are considered a great research, planning, management and monitoring tool. Medium to high resolution images (HyMap 2005 and Quickbird 2007 respectively) were processed and classified in order to test and compare their accuracy in producing a marine habitat map. Manta tow surveys were performed in the field for identification of 7 marine habitats 1. Coral community; 2. Coral reef; 3. Bed rock; 4. Sand; 5. Sand with boulders; 6. Sand with rodolyths; and 7. Deep water. The overall accuracy was slightly higher using Quickbird (87%) than using Hymap (60%), however the difference was not significant. The map produced using Quickbird was selected to represent the marine habitats of Isla del Caño. This map will help to analyze the adequate size and zoning of the marine protected area. Rev. Biol. La ecología de estos arrecifes coralinos ha sido estudiada a lo largo de 20 años pero todavía no habían sido mapeados. Los mapas son considerados una buena herramienta de investigación, planificación, manejo y monitoreo. Imágenes de mediana y alta resolución (Hymap 2005 y Quickbird 2007 respectivamente) fueron procesadas y clasificadas con el fin de evaluar y comparar su desempeño en la elaboración de un mapa de hábitats marinos. En el campo se realizaron sondeos tipo Manta para la identificación de siete hábitats marinos: 1. Comunidad coralina; 2. Arrecife coralino; 3. Roca; 4. Arena; 5. Arena con cantos; 6. Arena con rodolitos; y 7. Agua profunda. La exactitud de la clasificación resultó un poco mayor usando Quickbird (87%) que Hymap (60%), sin embargo la diferencia no era significativa. Se seleccionó el mapa resultante de la clasificación con Quickbird para representar los hábitats marinos de Isla del Caño. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: El estudio se realizó en 44 municipios del departamento de Antioquia, Colombia, durante los años 2003 y 2004, en una muestra representativa de los hogares rurales y urbanos del departamento de Antioquia, constituida por 1 624 hogares con niños menores de 10 años; los hogares fueron seleccionados de manera aleatoria, con un índice de confianza de 95% y un error de 3%. Se validó la escala de seguridad alimentaria doméstica utilizada por Paulina Lorenzana en Venezuela, y se determinó la consistencia interna de la escala mediante el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman y el coeficiente alfa de Cronbach. La validez del constructo se estableció mediante el método de componentes principales para datos categóricos. Se utilizaron el procedimiento de Prinqual y el modelo de Rasch para definir los componentes y los ��tems de la escala. RESULTADOS: El análisis factorial arrojó dos componentes: 1) las variables relacionadas con 'inseguridad alimentaria sin hambre' que lo explican en 95% y 2) las relacionadas con 'inseguridad alimentaria con hambre' que lo explican en 89.4%. El coeficiente alfa de Cronbach para el primer componente fue de de 0.95 y para el segundo de 0.89. Al ser analizados con el modelo Rasch, todos los ítems presentaron valores infit en un rango de 0.8 a 1.2. La escala se correlacionó significativamente con la disponibilidad de alimentos, el recurso de la limosna, el trabajo infantil, el tamaño del hogar y la ocupación del jefe de familia (p&lt; 0.000). CONCLUSIÓN: La escala puede considerarse un instrumento confiable para la valoración de la inseguridad alimentaria en los hogares de Antioquia.OBJETIVE: To adapt and validate in households of Antioquia, Colombia, a food security scale previously applied in households of Caracas, Venezuela.                 <text>Interspecific variation in leaf life span has wide-ranging implications for plant species sorting on resource availability gradients, and for ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling. Very little is known about leaf life spans of evergreen trees in the temperate forests of South America. Leaf life spans were estimated by static demographic methods, and associated leaf traits measured, for four conifers of this region. It was expected that leaf life span variation would correlate negatively with soil fertility of habitats normally occupied by each species. This prediction was upheld by the data. The mean leaf life span determined for Araucaria araucana (24 years) is among the highest figures reported for any plant species. This extreme leaf longevity was associated with very robust construction (high leaf mass per unit area) and very low nitrogen content. These aspects of the ecology of A. araucana may affect its fitness in two ways. Firstly, slow foliage turnover will reduce its annual nutrient requirements for crown maintenance, a trait that is thought to be crucial for survival on nutrient-poor sites. Secondly, the low decomposability of A. araucana leaf litter is likely to cause nutrient immobilisation, possibly favouring site retention by A. araucana in the face of competition from faster-growing but more nutrient-demanding species. Interspecific variation in leaf life span appeared to be systematically related to variation in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) and leaf nitrogen, in agreement with a large body of evidence that leaf evolution is constrained by a trade-off between trait combinations which optimise carbon gain and growth in resource-rich habitats, and those which favour persistence in chronically adverse environmentsLas diferencias específicas en longevidad foliar tienen importantes implicancias para la distribución de las plantas en relación con gradientes de recursos, y en procesos ecosistémicos tales como el ciclaje de nutrientes.
