                <text>Detection of protection-associated epitopes via reverse vaccinology is the first step for development of subunit vaccines against microbial pathogens. Mapping subunit vaccine targets requires high throughput methods, which would allow delineation of epitopes recognized by protective antibodies on a large scale. Phage displayed random peptide library coupled to Next Generation Sequencing (PDRPL/NGS) is the universal platform that enables high-yield identification of peptides that mimic epitopes (mimotopes). Despite being unsurpassed as a tool for discovery of polyclonal serum mimotopes, the PDRPL/NGS is far inferior as a quantitative method of immune response. Difficult-to-control fluctuations in amounts of antibody-bound phages after rounds of selection and amplification diminish the quantitative capacity of the PDRPL/NGS. In an attempt to improve the accuracy of the PDRPL/NGS method, we compared the discriminating capacity of two approaches for PDRPL/NGS data analysis. The whole-unique-sequence-based analysis (WUSA) involved generation of 7-mer peptide profiles and comparison of the numbers of sequencing reads for unique peptide sequences between serum samples. The motif-based analysis (MA) included identification of 4-mer consensus motifs unifying unique 7-mer sequences and comparison of motifs between serum samples. The motif comparison was based not on the numbers of sequencing reads, but on the numbers of distinct 7-mers constituting the motifs. Our PDRPL/NGS datasets generated from biopanning of protective and non-protective anti-Borrelia burgdorferi sera of New Zealand rabbits were used to contrast the two approaches. As a result, the principle component analyses (PCA) showed that the discriminating powers of the WUSA and MA were similar. In contrast, the unsupervised hierarchical clustering obtained via the MA classified the preimmune, non-protective, and protective sera better than the WUSA-based clustering. Also, a total number of discriminating motifs was higher than that of discriminating 7-mers. In sum, our results indicate that MA approach improves the accuracy and quantitative capacity of the PDRPL/NGS method.</text>

                <text>O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar, em três épocas, a comunidade de plantas presentes em áreas de cultivo de abacateiro e de nogueira pecan, localizadas na Fazenda Experimental Lageado, da FCA-UNESP, município de Botucatu-SP. Em decorrência da arquitetura da copa e do caráter decíduo das nogueiras, esta área apresenta-se mais ensolarada, o que produz condições ambientais diferentes entre as duas áreas estudadas. Foi estabelecida uma grade retangular composta de 55 parcelas quadradas, contíguas, com 5 m de lado, havendo 40 parcelas sob os abacateiros e 15 sob as nogueiras. As coletas foram realizadas em março, maio e agosto de 1993, quando foram sorteados quadrados de 1x 1 m em cada parcela, de forma a não haver coincidência entre as amostragens realizadas em cada época. Foram levantadas as espécies ocorrentes, sua porcentagem de cobertura e freqüência. Os dados foram analisados através de métodos multivariados, utilizando-se a Análise de Agrupamento para as seis situações (3 épocas x 2 ambientes). Foram coletadas, no total, 54 espécies, distribuídas em 38 gêneros e 19 famílias, sendo Asteraceae e Poaceae as que contribuíram com o maior número de espécies. A riqueza em espécies foi maior na área sob as nogueiras; em ambas as áreas, a riqueza foi maior na estação úmida. Sob os abacateiros, a porcentagem de cobertura total da comunidade apresentou pouca variação temporal, diferindo da área sob as nogueiras onde se observou flutuação deste parâmetro. O padrão de distribuição espacial, para quase todas as populações, foi do tipo agrupado. A similaridade florística foi maior entre as duas áreas dentro de cada época de coleta. A presença constante de espécies como Commelina nudiflora que contribuiu com valores elevados de cobertura nas três épocas de coleta, mostra a necessidade de utilizar métodos de controle permanentes na área do pomar estudado.The main goal of this study was to describe the floristic composition and the community structure of the vegetation under avocado and pecan trees growing at Fazenda Experimental Lageado, FCA -UNESP, Botucatu -SP, Brazil. The studied areas differ in relation to light exposure conditioned by canopy architecture and pecan leaf deciduousness. A rectangular frame measuring 25 x 55 m was divided in 55 quadrats of 5 x 5 m. Forty quadrats were located under avocado trees and 15 under pecan trees. Frequency and percentage weed cover were estimated in both conditions at March, May and August 1993. Quadrats of 1 x 1 m were randomly assigned to a new area within each plot, each month. A Cluster Analysis was performed with six experimental groups (3 sampling dates x environmental conditions). Fifty four species, 38 genera and 19 families were recorded in total. Asteraceae and Poaceae had greater number of species. Species richness was greater at pecan tree community. In both areas, the richness was greater at the wet season. Total percentage of weed cover showed small variation only under the avocado trees during the study period. Most populations showed an aggregate distribution pattern. Floristic similarity was greater among the two areas at each sampling period. Commelina nudiflora and some other weed species had high cover values during all the study period. Therefore, a continuous weed control is indicated to the studied orchard.</text>

Alina (habichuela) a la aplicación foliar de bioproductos.  En un diseño experimental de bloques al azar con tres repeticiones fueron evaluados los tratamientos:  5 y 10 mL/L por ha de Lebame, 1.5 y 3.5 kg/ha de Spiruvinas, y una aplicación uniforme por tratamiento de Rhizophagus irregularis, más dos tratamientos de materia orgánica (M.O.) consistentes en 5 y 10 kg/m2 (testigo) sin rizobio.  Las variables evaluadas fueron altura de planta, diámetro del tallo, número de vainas y rendimiento.  Los mayores rendimientos y desarrollo del cultivo se encontraron con los tratamientos combinados de Lebame y Spiruvinas, especialmente con la dosis de 3.5 mL/L por ha de este último más la cepa comercial EcoMic® de Rhizophagus irregularis con rendimiento de 4.17 kg/m2.</text>

                <text>The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is wreaking havoc around the world. Considering that extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from SARS-CoV-2 infected cells might play a role in a viremic phase contributing to disease progression and that standard methods for EV isolation have been reported to co-isolate viral particles, we would like to recommend the use of heightened laboratory safety measures during the isolation of EVs derived from SARS-CoV-2 infected tissue and blood from COVID-19 patients. Research needs to be conducted to better understand the role of EVs in SARS-CoV-2 infectivity, disease progression, and transmission. EV isolation procedures should include approaches for protection from SARS-CoV-2 contamination. We recommend the EV and virology scientific communities develop collaborative projects where relationships between endogenous EVs and potentially lethal enveloped viruses are addressed to better understand the risks and pathobiology involved.</text>

Durante el establecimiento se midió el área cubierta, y en la fase reproductiva se determinó la longitud de la legumbre, la cantidad de semillas por legumbre, el rendimiento de semilla total y el rendimiento de semilla pura germinable (SPG). Se encontraron diferencias significativas en el porcentaje de cobertura de esta especie a los 60 y 120 días, y se alcanzó la mayor variabilidad entre los tratamientos con la menor edad; mientras que con la mayor edad resultaron similares las dosis desde 8 hasta 32 t/ha y fueron superiores al testigo. Asimismo, durante la fase reproductiva existió una tendencia al mejor comportamiento con las aplicaciones orgánicas respecto al testigo, excepto en el rendimiento de semilla total, ya que no hubo diferencias entre éste y la aplicación de 8 t/ha. El análisis económico mostró diferencias estadísticas entre los tratamientos y se logró el menor costo del kilogramo de semilla con las aplicaciones de 16 y 24 t de excreta. Se concluye que el uso del estiércol vacuno como fertilizante orgánico produjo un efecto positivo, tanto en el establecimiento de esta especie como en los rendimientos de semilla pura, y se recomienda la dosis de 16 t/ha por ser la más productiva y económica.The effect of the application of five doses of cattle manure (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 t/ha) on the establishment and seed production of the forage legume Teramnus labialis (Semilla Clara) was studied, on a Fluvisol soil of the Cauto Valley, which was sown in 30 m plots in August. During the establishment the area covered was measured, and in the reproductive stage the length of the pod, quantity of seeds per pod, total seed yield and yield of pure germinable seed (PGS) were determined. Significant differences were found in the cover percentage of this species 60 and 120 days after sowing, and the highest variability among treatments was reached with the lower age; while with higher age the doses from 8 to 32 t/ha were similar and they were higher than the control. Likewise, during the reproductive stage there was a trend towards the better performance with the organic applications as compared to the control, except in the total seed yield, because there were no differences between it and the application of 8 t/ha. The economic analysis showed statistical differences among treatments and the lowest cost of the kilogram of seed was obtained with the applications of 16 and 24 t of manure. The use of cattle manure as organic fertilizer was concluded to produce a positive effect, on the establishment of this species as well as on the pure seed yields, and the 16 t/ha dose is recommended for being the most productive and economical.</text>

The MERS-CoV genome encodes four major structural proteins, among which the spike (S) protein has a key role in viral infection and pathogenesis. The antibody concentration was determined by using the transit time of beads aggregates. A linear relationship was established between the average transit time and the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) of SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG by the MCIA measurement are 0.06 mg/L and 0.10 mg/L, respectively.                 <text>With the outbreak of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the international community isforced to face the global health crisis again. Even though, throughout the course of history, the humanrace has seldom succeeded in getting rid of infectious diseases and global health inequalities completely.Faced with this tragic situation and extreme inequality, some philosophers have put forward someexciting plans, and it is undoubtedly regrettable that Rawls, one of the most outstanding contemporarypolitical philosophers and ethicists, has not addressed this issue in his The Law of Peoples. However, ifRawls wants its philosophical blueprint for the future world – the law of peoples as a “realistic utopia”to be feasible, he has to face the challenges of global health and make a reasonable response. Otherwise,the magnificent building of this “realistic utopia” will collapse. Therefore, the author tries to developRawls’ international justice theory by introducing the idea of the right to health into the law of peoples,so as to hopefully provide a feasible philosophical plan to solve the global health problems.</text>

                <text>Abstract Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) has claimed 349 lives with 5,327 probable cases reported in mainland China since November 2002. SARS case fatality has varied across geographical areas, which might be partially explained by air pollution level. Methods Publicly accessible data on SARS morbidity and mortality were utilized in the data analysis. Air pollution was evaluated by air pollution index (API) derived from the concentrations of particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and ground-level ozone. Ecologic analysis was conducted to explore the association and correlation between air pollution and SARS case fatality via model fitting. Partially ecologic studies were performed to assess the effects of long-term and short-term exposures on the risk of dying from SARS. Results Ecologic analysis conducted among 5 regions with 100 or more SARS cases showed that case fatality rate increased with the increment of API (case fatality = - 0.063 + 0.001 * API). Partially ecologic study based on short-term exposure demonstrated that SARS patients from regions with moderate APIs had an 84% increased risk of dying from SARS compared to those from regions with low APIs (RR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.41–2.40). Similarly, SARS patients from regions with high APIs were twice as likely to die from SARS compared to those from regions with low APIs. (RR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.31–3.65). Partially ecologic analysis based on long-term exposure to ambient air pollution showed the similar association. Conclusion Our studies demonstrated a positive association between air pollution and SARS case fatality in Chinese population by utilizing publicly accessible data on SARS statistics and air pollution indices. Although ecologic fallacy and uncontrolled confounding effect might have biased the results, the possibility of a detrimental effect of air pollution on the prognosis of SARS patients deserves further investigation.</text>
