<text>The present study was performed using data from a Biomphalaria tenagophila population located in a water cress garden in the Alto da Boa Vista region representing an isolated focal point of schistosomiasis in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The density and age structure of this B. tenagophila population and its rate of intection by Schistosoma mansoni were studied for a period of 15 months. The snail population showed seasonal variation in density, with a decrease in number of individual at the begining of the rainy season. At the end of this season, the population consisted mainly of adults (92.8% in May 1985 and 82.8% in April 1986). The population growth curve was logistic and of sigmoidal configuration. Shiscotoma mansoni cercariae were eliminated over a short period of time (March, April and May 1986). The release of cercariae of S. mansoni and of birds seems to depend on environmental temperature, which during certain months would show a daily variation of up to 13ºC, with the lower thermal limit approaching the limit value for sporocyte development.O presente trabalho foi realizado com dados obtidos de uma população de Biomphalaria tenagophila em uma horta de agrião na região do Alto da Boa Vista, foco isolado de esquistossomose na cidade do Rio de Janeiro.

<text>We studied the vegetation found in the Llano de Paletará, municipality of Coconuco, department of Cauca, Colombia. Based on the physiognomy and floristic composition of the vegetation we identified 8 paramo vegetation types. These units represent the most extensive azonal paramo vegetation types described up to now for the Cordillera Central. Four of the 8 vegetation types are herbaceous ('frailejonal-pajonal' with Espeletia, 'chuscal abierto' with Chusquea,'swamp' with Carex, and 'grassland' with Calamagrostis) , three are bush tickets (thicket with Hypericum, thicket with Ageratina, and thicket with Diplostephium), and one is a forest of low stature (forest with Escallonia). We analyze some aspects of the ecology and distribution of the vegetation types and evaluate their degree of peril and value of conservation.

The aim of this study was to verify the potential of three alternatives for sustainable farming, using a split plot design on two farms. The alternatives were: 1) bocashi chicken manure, super broth four, fertilizer (BCmSB4F), 2) bocashi cow manure, rhizosphere broth, super broth four, fertilizer (BCmRBSB4F), 3) green manure, rhizosphere broth, super broth four, fertilizer (Gm- RBSB4F) and 4) regional control (RC). This study determined disease incidence, plant height, stem and bulb diameter, healthy and diseased bulb weight and yield. The results indicated that regardless of the alternative, the agro-ecological conditions of the farm are critical to plant health and consequently to crop production. In El Arenal, where disease incidence was lower, the highest values for healthy bulb weight, bulb diameter and yield were revealed. The alternatives only differed in disease incidence at 30 and 45 days after transplant, with the lowest percentages corresponding to the green manure alternative. For revenue, the three alternatives were favorable, especially the BCmRBSB4F alternative which exceeded the RC. The results show that the alternatives GmRBSB4F and BCmRBSB4F have the most potential and are the most viable for sustainable onion production in Cucaita, Boyaca.</span></p></text>

Taking into account Stephen Toulmin´s approaches, we will look at some aspects in the historical development of Chemistry connected to the concept of substance. In a superficial and non-linear manner, the text tries to show some complex networks that developed between the diverse components named by Toulmin as 'intellectual ecology', such as the niches of rationality and the representations among them. This aproximation to the outcoming allows to identify the questions and the problems which with different meanings, emphasis and shades are still current; explanatory models which have pretended giving an answer to those questions and some forms of validity which permit the contextual acceptance of them. Finally, we propose possible implications of these analysis to teaching.</text>
