Estas dos especies mostraron inhibición positiva de la abundancia total, de organismos solitarios, de poliquetos e hidroides; B. cribaria inhibió adicionalmente la abundancia de cianofíceas, cobertura total y cobertura del alga parda. Así mismo, las píldoras preparadas con extracto de C. vasculum no disuadieron a los peces generalistas Stegastes partitus de alimentarse (97,5% de consumo), pero si mostraron rechazo por las píldoras con extracto de B. cribaria (37,5% de consumo). Lo que parece indicar que la esponja B. cribaria está mejor defendida químicamente contra la epibiosis y la depredación, mientras que C. vasculum parece tener un efecto atrayente sobre los peces, por lo que no mostró efectividad en este ensayo. Se propone a B. cribaria como una esponja con posibilidades en la industria de pinturas antiepibióticas, dada su mayor efectividad inhibitoria de epibiontes y su baja tasa de lixiviación. Ya que este es un primer acercamiento a la bioactividad de estas dos esponjas, surge la necesidad por continuar estudiando los aspectos ecológicos y químicos de los metabolitos que ellas producen. Unfortunately, coral reef dynamics have been poorly documented at any temporal scale in the Southern Caribbean. Through the 'National Monitoring System of Coral Reefs in Colombia' (Spanish acronym: SIMAC), we assessed 32 permanent plots at different depth levels in six reefs areas of the Colombian Caribbean from 1998 to 2004. Temporal trends in coral and algal cover were evaluated by repeated measures ANOVA. The model included the effect of depth levels (a fixed effect), monitoring plots (a random effect) as a nested factor within depths, and time (repeated factor). We found high spatial variability in major benthic components. Overall means indicated that algae were the most abundant biotic component in nearly all areas, ranging from 30.3% at Rosario to 53.3% at San Andrés. Live coral cover varied considerably from 10.1% at Santa Marta up to 43.5% at Urabá. Coral and algae cover per se are not always accurate reef indicators and therefore they need supplementary information. Temporal analyses suggested relative stability of coral and algal cover along the study but the causes for the observed trends were rarely identified. A significant decrease (p=0.042) in coral cover was only identified for some monitoring plots in Tayrona-time x plot (depth level) interaction, and importantly, few coral species explained this trend. Significant increase (p=0.005) in algal cover was observed over time for most plots in Rosario. Temporal trajectories in algal cover were influenced by depth-significant time x depth interaction-in San Andrés (increase, p=0.004) and Urabá (decrease, p=0.027). Algae trends were mainly explained by changes in algal turfs. Monitoring programs must focus on the mechanisms mediating the changes, in particular those concerning coral recovery and reef resilience in the current context of climate change. Rev. Biol. There is no approved effective therapy for COVID-19, but MSC therapies have shown first promise in the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) pneumonia, inflammation, and sepsis, which are among the leading causes of mortality in COVID-19 patients. Many of the critically ill COVID-19 patients are in a hypercoagulable procoagulant state and at high risk for disseminated intravascular coagulation, thromboembolism, and thrombotic multi-organ failure, another cause of high fatality. It is not yet clear whether IV infusion is a safe and effective route of MSC delivery in COVID-19, since MSC-based products express variable levels of highly procoagulant tissue factor (TF/CD142), compromising the cells' hemocompatibility and safety profile. Of concern, IV infusions of poorly characterized MSC products with unchecked (high) TF/CD142 expression could trigger blood clotting in COVID-19 and other vulnerable patient populations and further promote the risk for thromboembolism. In contrast, well-characterized products with robust manufacturing procedures and optimized modes of clinical delivery hold great promise for ameliorating COVID-19 by exerting their beneficial immunomodulatory effects, inducing tissue repair and organ protection. While the need for MSC therapy in COVID-19 is apparent, integrating both innate and adaptive immune compatibility testing into the current guidelines for cell, tissue, and organ transplantation is critical for safe and effective therapies. It is paramount to only use well-characterized, safe MSCs even in the most urgent and experimental treatments. We here propose three steps to mitigate the risk for these vulnerable patients: (1) updated clinical guidelines for cell and tissue transplantation, (2) updated minimal criteria for characterization of cellular therapeutics, and (3) updated cell therapy routines reflecting specific patient needs. Leonardos Description An account of the resource During the second half of the 20th century, the introduction of new chemical agriculture technologies brought about a revolution in food production, but this has also cause deep deterioration in our relationships with the natural environment. In developing tropical countries, record yields were accompanied by rural exodus, widespread deforestation and loss of topsoil. The stonemeal research described herein is an alternative to such practices as it is an environmental friendly and socially responsible technology based on soil rejuvenation and conservation by means of the addition of natural rock powders that are rich in phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, potassium and micronutrients. The research adopted an inter-disciplinary approach and was conducted among small farmers of a rural community located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The major goal was to demonstrate that there is a harmless cheap and simple alternative to fertilizing degraded or impoverished soils, which allow farmers to sustain high productivity and to remain on their plots of land. Results have confirmed the economic, environmental and productive feasibility and advantage of the stonemeal technique for corn, rise, manioc, sugar cane and horticultural species, when compared to the use of chemical fertilizers. The fertilization of the soil with rocks, allows the understanding of the natural processes, which maintain production levels while building a sustainable fertile soil.Durante a segunda metade do século 20, a introdução de novas tecnologias agrícolas viabilizou a revolução naprodução de alimentos, mas este fato causou também uma profunda deterioriazação na relação dos homens com o ambiente natural. Nos países tropicais, especialmente aqueles em desenvolvimento, os recordes de safras foram acompanhados de êxodo rural, devastação e erosão dos solos. A pesquisa sobre o uso da técnica de Rochagemaqui descrita pretende ser uma alternativa tecnológicaambientalmente correta e socialmente responsável para os problemas mencionados. A técnica de Rochagem está baseada no rejuvenescimento e conservação de solos por meio da adição de pós de determinados tipos de rochas enriquecidas em fósforo, cálcio, magnésio, potássio e micronutrientes. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida segundo os pressupostos interdisciplinares e foi conduzida em meio aos agricultores familiares de um assentamento rural localizado no Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Plantas após 37 dias de germinação foram tratadas via pulverização foliar com duas diferentes concentrações de AJ (25,0 e 50,0 mg L-1) e com fermentado contendo jasmonatos (correspondendo a 50 mg L-1 de AJ) e como controle foi utilizado água. Os experimentos foram realizados em casa de vegetação, em blocos casualizados, com três repetições de cinco plantas por tratamentos, com os tratamentos dispostos em fatorial de 4x1 (1 controle; 2 doses de AJ e 1 dose do filtrado). A avaliação das plantas foi realizada 80 dias após a aplicação de AJ e o fermentado. Plantas controle de Capsicum produziram 6,4 frutos/planta enquanto que plantas tratadas com 25,0 e 50,0 mg L-1 de AJ produziram 7,2 frutos/planta e 9,2 frutos/planta, respectivamente e plantas tratadas com o fermentado produziram 11,7 frutos/planta. Adicionalmente, plantas controle de Physalis produziram 10,5 botões/planta e quando tratadas com 25,0 e 50,0 mg L-1 de AJ produziram 15,5 e 16,0 botões/planta, respectivamente. Plantas tratadas com o fermentado dobraram a produção de botões/planta (23,0) quando comparados ao controle. Resultados obtidos validam o potencial fitorregulador do AJ e do fermentado contendo jasmonatos, comprovado pelo aumento na produção de frutos e botões florais pelas espécies vegetais testadas, evidenciando assim o potencial de uso deste fermentado como alternativa de menor custo ao AJ obtido comercialmente.Jasmonic acid (JA) and its jasmonate derivatives are endogenous hormones produced by numerous plant species that interfere on plant defense mechanism and act as stress signaling. The aim of this work was to compare the plant growth regulator potential of a fermented broth, obtained by the fermentation of the filamentous fungus Botryosphaeria rhodina, containing jasmonates to the action of the jasmonic acid used as standard. Selected seeds of Capsicum frutescens (pimenta malagueta) and Physalis angulata (camapú) were planted in soil containing mineral and organic fertilizer. Thirty seven days after germination seedlings were sprinkled with two different concentrations of JA (25.0 and 50.0 mg L-1) and with the jasmonate-containing fermented broth (corresponding to 50 mg L-1 of JA). Water was used as control. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse in a completely randomized block design, with three replications with five plants and treatments applied to a 4x1 factorial (1 control; 2 doses of JA and 1 dose of filtrated). The evaluation of seedlings was performed 80 days after scattering with JA and the fermented broth. Capsicum control plants produced 6.4 fruits/plant, while plants sprinkled with 25.0 and 50.0 mg L-1 JA produced 7.2 and 9. 2 fruits/plant respectively and plants sparged with the fermented broth produced 11.7 fruits/plant. Moreover, Physalis control plants produced 10.5 buds/plant and when sprinkled with 25.0 and 50.0 mg L-1 JA produced 15.5 and 16.0 buds/plant respectively. Plantlets sparged with the fermented broth doubled the production of buds/plant (23.0) when compared to the control. The results obtained validate the growth regulator potential of JA and of the fermented broth on the tested plants, evidenced by the increased production of fruits and flower buds by the plant species tested. Thus, the fermented broth of the fungus Botryosphaeria rhodina is a lower cost alternative to commercially obtained JA. A área em estudo está localizada na região semi-árida brasileira, no Estado se Pernambuco. A investigação foi procedida na barragem subterrânea Cafundó II, onde é praticada a agricultura familiar de pequeno porte. A investigação preliminar da vulnerabilidade à contaminação foi efetuada a partir da aplicação do índice de vulnerabilidade GOD. Complementarmente, amostras da água subterrânea de um poço utilizado para irrigação e piezômetro foram coletadas para determinação da concentração iônica, visando avaliar contaminação. Observa-se que a área adjacente à barragem subterrânea de Cafundó II apresenta alta vulnerabilidade à contaminação. A água subterrânea está dentro dos padrões vigentes para a água de consumo humano e cultivo de vegetais de consumo sem cozimento, mas a salinidade supera o limite de tolerância das principais culturas praticadas na área apresentando risco perda de produtividade destas. Os resultados refletem a influência da formação geológica e da prática da irrigação, associada ao uso de agroquímicos. Foi avaliada a regeneração de espécies arbóreas e de Merostachys multiramea Hack. em uma área de transição entre Floresta Ombrófila Mista e Floresta Estacional no Sul do Brasil e comparada a estrutura de regeneração da área entre dois e quatro anos após floração, frutificação e morte de M. multiramea.
