We performed a comparative genomics and evolutionary study of DHN genes in four model Brachypodium grass species. Due to limited knowledge on dehydrin expression under water deprivation stress in Brachypodium, we also performed a drought-induced gene expression analysis in 32 ecotypes of the genus' flagship species B. distachyon showing different hydric requirements. Genomic sequence analysis detected 10 types of dehydrin genes (Bdhn) across the Brachypodium species. Domain and conserved motif contents of peptides encoded by Bdhn genes revealed eight protein architectures. Bdhn genes were spread across several chromosomes. Selection analysis indicated that all the Bdhn genes were constrained by purifying selection. Three upstream cis-regulatory motifs (BES1, MYB124, ZAT) were detected in several Bdhn genes. Gene expression analysis demonstrated that only four Bdhn1-Bdhn2, Bdhn3, and Bdhn7 genes, orthologs of wheat, barley, rice, sorghum, and maize genes, were expressed in mature leaves of B. distachyon and that all of them were more highly expressed in plants under drought conditions. Brachypodium dehydrin expression was significantly correlated with drought-response phenotypic traits (plant biomass, leaf carbon and proline contents and water use efficiency increases, and leaf water and nitrogen content decreases) being more pronounced in drought-tolerant ecotypes. Our results indicate that dehydrin type and regulation could be a key factor determining the acquisition of water-stress tolerance in grasses. The fruit yield and quality of four tomato cultivars were evaluated in hydroponics and fertigation systems at two ratios between N and K provided to the plants. Two experiments were carried out simultaneously in greenhouse, in 4x2 factorial design with four replicates, comprising four genotypes (cultivars Cereja 261, San Marzano, Santa Clara and the hybrid Cereja Chipano) and two N:K ratios (1:1.5 and 1:2 in hydroponics, and 1:2 and 1:3 in fertigation). The objective of the present study was (1) to verify the existence of C. neoformans and C. gattii in crop and cloaca of wildlife and captivity birds hypothesizing about a possible primary source of this yeast in the excreta, and (2) to determine the fungi's invasive capability in avian species through latex agglutination. For that purpose, 172 cloacal and 77 crop samples of domestic pigeon, Passerine, and Psittacine birds were collected. None of these samples was positive, suggesting that the yeast is not saprobiotic in the digestive tract of these birds. O experimento foi realizado no período de maio a outubro de 2011, na Fazenda Água Limpa-UnB Utilizou- se o delineamento utilizado foi de blocos casualizados em arranjo fatorial 8 x 2, com quatro repetições. Os fatores avaliados foram oito fertilizantes e compostos indutores de resistência (químico, Agri Sil®, Hortiplus®, Megafol®, Biofertilizante, Bion®, gesso agrícola e água) e duas cultivares de tomate rasteiro (IPA6 e AP533). Cada parcela foi constituída de 16 plantas, totalizando 1.024 plantas. Exceto o tratamento químico todos os demais tratamentos são permitidos na agricultura orgânica, o que pode vir a contribuir com estudos posteriores nessa linha. A aplicação dos tratamentos foi realizada com pulverizador costal, semanalmente num total de 10 aplicações. Ao final do ciclo da cultura foi obtida a produtividade estimada, massa fresca dos frutos por planta e por parcela, número de frutos por parcela e número de frutos com podridão apical por parcela. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias comparadas pelo teste Tukey ao nível de 5% de significância. Houve interação entre os fatores avaliados para a característica de massa fresca dos frutos por parcela e número de frutos com podridão apical. Em ambas cultivares todos os tratamentos apresentou um desempenho satisfatório quanto à produtividade estimada, massa fresca de frutos por planta e número de frutos por parcela. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, os produtos testados possuem indícios de eficiência quanto a utilização em lavouras comerciais com a finalidade de garantir a produtividade e reduzir e\ou substituir parcialmente o uso de defensivos agrícolas, entretanto, estudos posteriores são necessários para que se possa confirmar a eficiência desses produtos no desempenho agronômico do tomateiro. Quintanar Description An account of the resource The Quasi-Biennal Oscillation (QBO) and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) largely modulate the zonal wind in the tropics. Previous studies showed that QBO phases produce changes in deep convection through an increase/decrease in the tropopause height over the tropics and subtropics. This study investigates the combined effects of QBO and ENSO on tropical cyclone activity by modulating tropopause height. We found that tropopause height increases over the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean region, and the Western North Atlantic Ocean during La Niña + QBOW, allowing deeper tropical convection to develop over those regions. As a consequence, TC activity over those regions is not only increased in number but also enhanced in intensity. Conversely, during El Niño + QBOE, most deep tropical convection is inhibited over those same regions due to the decrease in tropopause height over the subtropics. We conclude that QBO effects on TCs and deep convection should be studied in combination with ENSO. Additional comparative studies using long record data at high vertical resolution are needed to fully understand to what extent QBO interacts with ENSO in the lower tropical stratosphere and upper tropical troposphere. Sánchez–García Description An account of the resource Nuevos datos sobre la situación y la ecología de un ave galliforme en peligro de extinción: la perdiz pardilla (Perdix perdix hispaniensis) en el sistema Ibérico (Soria, España) Se realizó un estudio entre 2008 y 2010 para conocer la situación y la ecología de la perdiz pardilla (Perdix perdix hispaniensis), que se encuentra en peligro de extinción, en el extremo meridional de su distribución geográfica. De una superficie de reproducción histórica de 28.300 ha, se confirmó la observación de 15 grupos familiares (adultos con juveniles) en una superficie de 5.550 ha con un tamaño de población estimado en otoño de entre 103 y 113 perdices como mínimo y de entre 163 y 181 como máximo. Se estimó una densidad de 2,3 parejas/1.000 ha en primavera y, al considerar únicamente grupos familiares, de 6,8 perdices/1.000 ha. La mayoría de las aves se encontraban a una altitud superior a 1.690 m s.n.m. y usaban principalmente matorrales de montaña (especialmente Calluna vulgaris y Erica spp.). La pérdida del hábitat fue el factor más perjudicial para la conservación de la especie; en este sentido, se concluyó que se debería dar prioridad a la recuperación urgente del hábitat y al seguimiento, lo que podría cambiar el destino de la especie. Tal es el caso de la abeja roja de los caracoles, Rhodanthidium sticticum (Hymenoptera, Megachilidae), una especie mediterránea, solitaria y territorial cuya biología ha sido tratada muy superficialmente. En este trabajo se describe su fenología, el uso que hace de conchas de caracol más allá de la nidificación, la polilectia y las plantas que visita, su capacidad de vuelo, la territorialidad y el apareamiento, todo ello basado en observaciones de campo propias. La biología de R. sticticum es parecida a la de otros Anthidiini, pero con particularidades. Es una especie primaveral, univoltina, muy activa en días soleados durante las horas centrales. Cuando las condiciones meteorológicas son adversas se refugia en el interior de conchas de caracol, pudiendo compartirlas varios individuos (de la misma especie o incluso de otras). A pesar de ser claramente poliléctica, muestra preferencia por plantas con flores melitófilas, en especial del género Antirrhinum. Los machos defienden sus territorios, tanto contra otros machos conespecíficos como interespecíficamente, con un comportamiento que permite asegurar su propio éxito reproductivo. Poaching can occur in marine protected areas and/or in fishery management areas. Unfortunately, understanding the magnitude and characteristics of poaching under community based and co-management governance schemes in coastal and marine environments, has not received the attention it deserves. In Chile, a system of Territorial Users Rights for Fisheries (TURF) has been recognized as one of the largest experiences of small-scale fisheries co-management at a global scale. Currently, poaching is one of the main threats to the TURF system in Chile. In this article, we assessed poaching of a highly valuable benthic resource (Concholepas concholepas) from TURF management areas. We estimated artisanal fisher association leaders’ perceptions of poaching within their TURFs and explore determinants of poaching for Concholepas concholepas. Poaching of Concholepas concholepas showed differences along the studied sites. As expected, the greater abundance of Concholepas concholepas in the management areas generates an increased incentive to poach. Areas that make the greatest investment in surveillance are those most affected by poaching. However, our study cannot determine the effectiveness of current levels of surveillance on illegal extraction. Results show older areas tend to reduce the levels of illegal extraction, which could indicate a greater capacity and experience to control poaching. Supporting fisher associations in enforcing TURFs and following up on sanctions against perpetrators are conditioning factors, highlighted by fisher leaders, for TURF sustainability. The approach used in this study provides insights to prioritize geographies and opportunities to address poaching in small-scale co-managed fisheries.
