The organic production systems have been raising on cultivated area, producers number and market. However, technical and scientific information about raw and processed material undergoing to organic production system is scarce. Tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) plays an important role for organic producers around the world due to its high profits and market acceptance. The aim of this study was to prepare an organic tomato sauce made from the knowledge of familiar farmers and to assess its microbiological quality and nutritional information. The studied product presented 93.45% of moisture, 0.89% of protein, 0.13% of lipids, 1.5% of ash and 4.03% of total carbohydrates contents. The products showed a satisfactory sanitary condition according to ANVISA and calorific value lower than the commercial sauces available in the market. The processed products were adequately labeled and sold at the agro-ecological fairs in Rio de Janeiro city, adding value to organic products generating incomes to small farmers.</text>

The yield and quality of melon fruits cultivated under different doses of organic fertilizers were evaluated. The field trial was conducted from August to November 2002, in Ceará State, Brazil. The experimental design was made of random blocks of four replications. Melon hybrid AF 646 (Sakata Seeds) was sown using a distance between-beds of two meters and 0,5 m between plants. Six treatments were evaluated 1) 100 g of Ribumin® in a linear meter; 2) 150 g of Ribumin® in a linear meter; 3) 200 g of Ribumin® per linear meter; 4) 1400 g of Pole® per linear meter; 5) 700 g of Pole® + 100 g of Ribumin® in a linear meter and 6) Untreated control. All the treatments were applied one day before seeding. After harvest, fruits were counted and a random sample of four fruits per plot was taken for analysis into the laboratory. The analyzed variables were: fruit weight (PF), longitudinal diameter (DL) and traverse diameter (DT), pulp thickness (EP), total soluble solids content (SST) and pulp firmness (FP). Yield was calculated from data of fruit number per plot and their mean weight. The variance analysis revealed significant difference for PF, PE, DL, EP and SST. The mean values for DL, EP and SST parameters of the treated group were significantly different from the mean of the untreated control. No significant difference was observed between samples from the treated group. Nevertheless Ribumin® fertilizer provided smaller production costs.</text>

There's a growing concern about the need for production and consumption of healthier food, without pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The practice of organic agriculture appears in this context, but still shows little assessed results in the academic and scientific context. Thus, this research is aimed at the diagnoses of organic production of citrus in the region of Caí Valley, in southern Brazil. Initially eight producers were selected, all already converted to the organic production system. To carry out the research, semi-structured surveys were applied, seeking the diagnoses of technical and environmental aspects. The organic producers have shown to be satisfied with the organic production system. Moreover, show good knowledge about the environment, plants, soil and agrobiological processes, which is possible technical events and meetings, between these of the Ecocitrus cooperative. The constant sharing of experiences among organic producers has improved their technical qualification, besides providing better awareness in the political, economic and social aspects.</text>

<text>Closely related to the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, the genus Boechera is known to contain both sexual and apomictic species or accessions. Boechera retrofracta is a diploid sexually reproducing species and is thought to be an ancestral parent species of apomictic species. Here we report the de novo assembly of the B. retrofracta genome using short Illumina and Roche reads from 1 paired-end and 3 mate pair libraries. The distribution of 23-mers from the paired end library has indicated a low level of heterozygosity and the presence of detectable duplications and triplications. The genome size was estimated to be equal 227 Mb. N50 of the assembled scaffolds was 2.3 Mb. Using a hybrid approach that combines homology-based and de novo methods 27,048 protein-coding genes were predicted. Also repeats, transfer RNA (tRNA) and ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes were annotated. Finally, genes of B. retrofracta and 6 other Brassicaceae species were used for phylogenetic tree reconstruction. In addition, we explored the histidine exonuclease APOLLO locus, related to apomixis in Boechera, and proposed model of its evolution through the series of duplications. An assembled genome of B. retrofracta will help in the challenging assembly of the highly heterozygous genomes of hybrid apomictic species.</text>
