Introducción: La fábrica de conservas “Reinado” se encuentra entre las industrias que contribuyen al deterioro del medio ambiente, por ser un alto consumidor de agua, generar gran cantidad de efluentes y emisiones gaseosas a la atmósfera. Objetivo: Realizar una evaluación de Impacto Ambiental en la Fábrica de Conservas “Reinado” a través de la metodología de Análisis de Ciclo de Vida (ACV). Materiales y Métodos: El Diagnóstico Ambiental se realizó mediante la Metodología para la Ejecución de Diagnósticos Ambientales para la obtención del Reconocimiento Ambiental Nacional. Para el ACV se empleó el software SimaPro, con un enfoque desde la cuna hasta la puerta. En la evaluación del impacto se utilizó la metodología ReCiPe, en las versiones de punto medio y final. Resultados y Discusión: El proceso productivo es el que más influye en los impactos ambientales y dentro de este la emisión de contaminantes a la atmósfera (CO2, SO2, NOx y material particulado) y el consumo excesivo de agua. Con las medidas propuestas la empresa disminuye los daños a la salud humana en un 81,6 % y al ecosistema en un 67,8 %, además se disminuyen los impactos en las categorías de calentamiento global en un 54 % y en formación de material particulado y acidificación terrestre en un 88 %. Conclusiones: El proceso productivo es el que más contribuye a la mayoría de las categorías de impacto evaluadas y con la aplicación de las medidas propuestas se puede lograr reducciones de impactos por encima del 50 %.

Abstract Background Extraordinary infection control measures limited access to medical care in the Greater Toronto Area during the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak. The objective of this study was to determine if the period of these infection control measures was associated with changes in overall population mortality due to causes other than SARS. Methods Observational study of death registry data, using Poisson regression and interrupted time-series analysis to examine all-cause mortality rates (excluding deaths due to SARS) before, during, and after the SARS outbreak. The population of Ontario was grouped into the Greater Toronto Area (N = 2.9 million) and the rest of Ontario (N = 9.3 million) based upon the level of restrictions on delivery of clinical services during the SARS outbreak. Results There was no significant change in mortality in the Greater Toronto Area before, during, and after the period of the SARS outbreak in 2003 compared to the corresponding time periods in 2002 and 2001. The rate ratio for all-cause mortality during the SARS outbreak was 0.99 [95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.93–1.06] compared to 2002 and 0.96 [95% CI 0.90–1.03] compared to 2001. An interrupted time series analysis found no significant change in mortality rates in the Greater Toronto Area associated with the period of the SARS outbreak. Conclusion Limitations on access to medical services during the 2003 SARS outbreak in Toronto had no observable impact on short-term population mortality. Effects on morbidity and long-term mortality were not assessed. Efforts to contain future infectious disease outbreaks due to influenza or other agents must consider effects on access to essential health care services.

Podría decirse, sin temor a pecar de exagerados, que en Colombia todo está por hacer en cuestiones de economía agrícola. Esto, como es natural, nos plantea un problema económico básico: Decidir qué estudios deben iniciarse primero, a fin de obtener una mejor utilización de nuestros limitados recursos. En nuestra opinión los estudios que tienen más importancia son aquellos de tipo básico que nos pueden dar la información necesaria para continuar de una manera progresiva las investigaciones en ciencias sociales. Dadas las condiciones del país, creemos que los tres tipos de estudios básicos más urgentes son los de: Geografía Económica, Sociología Rural y Estadística Agrícola. Geografía económica: En realidad se desconoce al país; sólo tenemos una idea aproximada de lo que son las distintas regiones naturales, pero no sabemos nada acerca de sus interrelaciones económicas. La prueba más diciente de que en Colombia los estudios de geografía económica están atrasados, es que en el país no existe todavía una Facultad de Geografía dependiente de ninguna Universidad. Y los pocos estudios iniciados, al igual que los reconocimientos de suelos, han marchado con un paso extremadamente lento, y muchos de ellos se han basado en datos fundamentalmente errados. Es por esto por lo que se necesitan estudios básicos de geografía económica en el país a fin de acabar con una serie de conceptos falsos y poder así iniciar estudios verdaderamente científicos. Sociología Rural: No solo deben hacerse estudios de geografía económica sino también estudios de sociología rural. Es decir, debe estudiarse la ecología social o geografía humana, que según la define Taylor es: El estudio de las maneras como los pueblos se distribuyen por sí mismos sobre la tierra al desarrollar y utilizar los recursos naturales en respuesta a las fuerzas culturales y sociales. Va más allá que la geografía o económica y es más importante que ambas. Estadística Agrícola: La importancia que tienen las estadísticas agrícolas para el país es decisiva para el planeamiento de los programas de todo orden. En la actualidad la gran mayoría de las estadísticas oficiales se basan en datos completamente erróneos, debido a que las cifras dadas no se han recogido de fuentes primarias sino que provienen de apreciaciones de personas más o menos informadas. Quienes no pueden dar información exacta. Los datos equivocados son peligrosos ya que los errores en que se incurra pueden convenir a determinados sectores económicos. En la actualidad funciona la sección de Economía Agrícola, que es una dependencia del departamento de Coordinación de Programas del Ministerio de Agricultura. Esta en realidad es la misma División de Economía Rural, que cambió de nombre al reorganizarse el Ministerio de Agricultura, y que desde hace algún tiempo ha venido recogiendo las estadísticas agrícolas de que se dispone hoy en el país. Sin embargo su personal, en comparación con las necesidades estadísticas del país es completamente inadecuado, unos cuatro o cinco técnicos tienen el encargo de levantar todas las estadísticas agrícolas de un país tan grande como Colombia.

La investigación tuvo lugar con el objetivo evaluar el comportamiento de la diversidad de especies arvenses y arbóreas y arbustivas en cuatro fincas de la agricultura suburbana de Santiago de Cuba. Se delimitaron parcelas de 100 m2 para el conteo de las especies presentes en el área. Identificadas las especies se elaboró un listado florístico y se calcularon los indicadores de diversidad Alfa Riqueza de especies (S), Dominancia (Simpson D) y Diversidad general (Shannon H´). En el caso de la diversidad Beta se tuvieron en cuenta los índices de Jaccard (Ij), Morisita-Horn (IM-H) y Subordinación Ecológica (SE). Se registraron62 509 individuos pertenecientes a 65 familias, 154 géneros y 183 especies. Para ambos grupos de especies los indicadores de diversidad Alfa mostraron una tendencia al aumento de un período al otro con valores dentro del rango establecido para cada indicador, excepto para la finca La Caballería donde el índice de Shannon H´ no estuvo dentro del establecido para una correcta diversidad y abundancia en la época poco lluviosa. Los indicadores de la diversidad Beta arrojaron disimilitud entre las muestras que se comparan lo que evidencia la presencia de especies específicas adaptadas a las condiciones ambientales del lugar.

El trabajo se realizó con el objetivo evaluar el comportamiento de la diversidad de plantas objeto cultivo en cuatro fincas de la agricultura suburbana de Santiago de Cuba. Se levantaron parcelas con una dimensión de 100 m2 para el conteo de las especies presentes en el área. Identificadas las especies se elaboró un listado florístico. Se contabilizaron aquellas que pertenecieron a una misma categoría taxonómica y se procedió a la evaluación de la composición botánica considerando número de individuos, familia, géneros y especies. Con el criterio de abundancia de grupo considerando especies para la alimentación y servicios ecosistémicos, ornamentales y medicinales, se calcularon como indicadores de diversidad Alfa Riqueza de especies (S), Dominancia de Berger-Parker (d) y Diversidad general (Shannon H´). En el caso de la diversidad Beta se tuvieron en cuenta los índices de Jaccard (Ij), Sorenson (Iss) y Subordinación Ecológica (SE). Se registraron 39 269 individuos pertenecientes a 45 familias, 72 géneros y 87 especies. La composición botánica mostró variación con tendencia al aumento del número de individuos en las especies ornamentales y medicinales siendo Asteraceae, Leguminosae, Musaceae, Poaceae y Solanaceae las familias botánicas más representadas. La diversidad alfa evidenció un aumento de una temporada a la otra con valores dentro del rango establecido para cada indicador excepto para el índice de Shannon H´ en la finca La Caballería en ambos períodos. La similitud osciló entre baja y la disimilitud lo que evidencia la presencia de especies muy específicas adaptadas a las condiciones ambientales de cada lugar.

Los procesos agrícolas actuales precisan de un desarrollo en armonía con el ambiente, para ello se requiere comprender todos los fenómenos que tienen lugar en los agroecosistemas incluidas las interacciones entre sus componentes. El objetivo del trabajo fue fundamentar teóricamente la relación existente entre agricultura suburbana, biodiversidad, servicios ecosistémicos y control natural de plagas. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica donde se comprobó que la agricultura suburbana es una forma de agricultura que se basa en el logro de un menor impacto al medioambiente y en promover valores adecuados de biodiversidad. Esto es importante pues la biodiversidad es la base de la agricultura y la fuente para que los seres humanos satisfagan sus necesidades gracias a los bienes y servicios ecosistémicos que proporciona. Los servicios ecosistémicos a su vez se convierten en herramientas para que los productores puedan manejar sus fincas de manera sostenible utilizando los recursos endógenos en ellas disponibles. El control natural de plagas es uno de los procesos que en las fincas se ve favorecido, pues existen muchos grupos de organismos, principalmente plantas, que pueden proveer recursos para combatir organismos nocivos. Existe una relación de interdependencia entre agricultura suburbana, biodiversidad, servicios ecosistémicos y control natural de plagas. Current agricultural processes require development in harmony with the environment, for this it is necessary to understand all the phenomena that take place in agroecosystems, including the interactions between their components. The objective of the work was to theoretically establish the existing relationship between suburban agriculture, biodiversity, ecosystem services and natural pest control. A bibliographic review was carried out where it was found that suburban agriculture is a form of agriculture that is based on achieving a lower impact on the environment and promoting adequate values of biodiversity. This is important because biodiversity is the basis of agriculture and the source for human beings to satisfy their needs thanks to the ecosystem goods and services it provides. Ecosystem services in turn become tools for producers to manage their farms in a sustainable way using the endogenous resources available to them. Natural pest control is one of the processes that is favored on farms, since there are many groups of organisms, mainly plants, that can provide resources to combat harmful organisms. There is an interdependent relationship between suburban agriculture, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and natural pest control. Contexto: Si bien es cierto que las especies arvenses han sido vistas tradicionalmente como un problema, a la luz de los conocimientos actuales se han convertido en un recurso a conservar.Objetivo: Determinar las potencialidades de la vegetación arvense existente en fincas de la agricultura suburbana de Santiago de Cuba para la alimentación.Métodos: Se desarrolló un estudio etnobotánico en comunidades cercanas a diferentes fincas. Se determinó composición botánica, porcentajes de especies con potencialidades para la alimentación así como órganos más utilizados, tipo de alimentación a la que se destinan y para la alimentación animal las especies más favorecidas.Resultados: Se contabilizaron 22 especies arvenses con potencialidades para la alimentación siendo la familia Poaceae la de mayor riqueza de especies y Bothriochloa pertusa (L.) A. Camus la especie más dominante. Esta junto a Megathyrsus maximus (Jacq.) Sim. & Jac. tuvieron un porcentaje de referencia igual al 100 %. Del 77,27 % de la flora arvense el órgano más utilizado son las hojas y el 63,63 % se destinan a la alimentación animal. Ocho especies se destinan a la alimentación humana de las cuales Pithecellobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth y Chrysophyllum oliviforme L. se consumen como frutales de baja presencia.Conclusiones: La flora arvense estudiada posee potencialidades para ser utilizada en la alimentación animal y humana.

Contexto: El suelo es un recurso importante y constituye la base para la explotación agropecuaria y forestal. Sus propiedades químicas tienen relación con la disponibilidad de nutrientes. Sin un estudio adecuado de los indicadores de la naturaleza química de los suelos, es difícil comprender la fertilidad de estos.Objetivo: Evaluar el comportamiento de algunas propiedades químicas del suelo en cuatro fincas de la agricultura suburbana de Santiago de Cuba.Métodos: Se realizaron calicatas para tomar muestras en cada uno de los horizontes del suelo. Identificadas las muestras, fueron trasladas a los Laboratorios de la Empresa Geominera Oriente. Se determinó el contenido de calcio (Ca2+), magnesio (Mg2+), aluminio (Al3+), sodio (Na+) y potasio (K+), relaciones catiónicas, el pH, Capacidad de Intercambio Catiónico Efectiva (CICe), el Porciento de Saturación por Bases (V), Saturación respecto a la CICe y Materia Orgánica (M.O).Resultados: El contenido de Ca2+, Na+ y K+tuvo un comportamiento variable mientras que el Al3+ y el Mg2+ se comportaron de manera similar, superando en todos los casos los límites de permisibilidad en el suelo. El pH fue la propiedad que menos variación mostró, encontrándose por encima de 7, el valor V en todos los casos fue superior al 85 % y la CICe se encontró por encima de 50 cmol.Kg-1. La relación Ca2+/Mg2+ mostró un balance desfavorable, la saturación por Na+ fue elevada y el contenido de M.O de manera general fue bajo.Conclusiones: Las propiedades químicas de los suelos en las fincas estudiadas son un factor limitante para el desarrollo de procesos productivos. A pesar de tener una fertilidad potencial y buen contenido de nutrientes, la relación entre los diferentes elementos hace que estos permanezcan retenidos en el suelo en formas que no pueden ser asimilados por los cultivos.
