This limited mobility affected citizens’ routines at homes because it influenced their life habits, including food management. The main objective of this paper was to understand citizens’ food waste (FW) behavior during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Spain by understanding related food practices that could have influenced FW generation. An online survey was conducted from 14 May to 11 June, 2020; 6293 valid responses were collected and analyzed, and 95% of the participants declared not wasting more food than usual. On average, they reported wasting 234 g per household per week, which equals 88 g per capita. We found significant differences in the reported FW generation between participants regarding their age, gender, household composition, and employment status due to COVID-19. In addition, food-related behaviors such as buying more food than usual due to fear or anxiety, storing more food than before the lockdown, and improvising when buying groceries seemed to affect the FW reported by the participants. The paper ends by comparing the conclusions drawn by different works conducted in other countries for a similar purpose. Para Microscopia Óptica se estudiaron frotis de cultivos autolisados de B. thuringiensis teñidos con violeta cristal. Para Microscopia Electrónica de Transmisión, se analizaron cortes ultrafinos obtenidos a partir de precipitados de B. thuringiensis incluidos en resina Spurr. La morfología de los cristales estuvo en correspondencia con la actividad biológica informada para cada cepa. La cepa LBT-87, tóxica contra el insecto díptero D. melanogaster, presentó cristales irregulares con inclusiones en forma de barra. La cepa LBT-111, tóxica contra el insecto lepidóptero H. virescens, presentó cristales bipiramidales y cúbicos. Actualmente, se informan más de 100 especies dentro de este género. El género Bacillus y otros relacionados, se han aislado de numerosos cultivos de interés económico. En este trabajo, se muestran sus potencialidades en la promoción del crecimiento vegetal y el control biológico de patógenos. Se han demostrado diferentes capacidades de Bacillus en asociación a plantas como la producción de fitohormonas como las auxinas, el control biológico mediado por la producción de antibióticos, sideróforos y enzimas líticas, la solubilización de fosfatos y la fijación del nitrógeno. Por otra parte, se expone el riesgo asociado a su uso en la agricultura como biofertilizantes y los diferentes marcadores de patogenicidad que pueden ser utilizados para la detección de determinantes genéticos asociados a la virulencia en el género Bacillus. The histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor valproic acid, which has been available for the therapy of epilepsy for many years, is a drug that could be repurposed for patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. This article will review the reasons to consider valproic acid as a potential therapeutic to prevent severe COVID-19. Valproic acid could reduce angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane serine protease 2 expression, required for SARS-CoV-2 viral entry, and modulate the immune cellular and cytokine response to infection, thereby reducing end-organ damage. The combined anti-thrombotic, anti-platelet, and anti-inflammatory effects of valproic acid suggest it could be a promising therapeutic target for COVID-19. Whittaker Description An account of the resource Canine enteric coronavirus (CCoV) is an alphacoronavirus infecting dogs that is closely related to enteric coronaviruses of cats and pigs. While CCoV has traditionally caused mild gastro-intestinal clinical signs, there are increasing reports of lethal CCoV infections in dogs, with evidence of both gastrointestinal and systemic viral dissemination. Consequently, CCoV is now considered to be an emerging infectious disease of dogs. In addition to the two known serotypes of CCoV, novel recombinant variants of CCoV have been found containing spike protein N-terminal domains (NTDs) that are closely related to those of feline and porcine strains. The increase in disease severity in dogs and the emergence of novel CCoVs can be attributed to the high level of recombination within the spike gene that can occur during infection by more than one CCoV type in the same host.
