Evidence suggests that climate change could drastically reduce Mexico's agricultural productivity with severe socio-ecological consequences. Population growth and the increasing demand of resources will exacerbate these impacts. Focusing on rainfed maize production, we evaluate the socio-ecological risk that municipalities currently face and how climate change could modify it. Municipalities were classified based on their biophysical and socioeconomic traits like temperature, precipitation, population, gross domestic product, marginalization, and agricultural subsidies. The study identifies municipalities that would face higher risk under climate change conditions, and it evaluates whether increases in agricultural subsidies could be effective for reducing the farmers' future risk. Our results show that during the 2010's, 36.8% of the municipalities and 15% of the population were at very high and high risk, respectively. By 2070, under a high-warming scenario these figures increase to 56.5 and 18.5%. We find that a generalized augment in agricultural subsidies is not enough to compensate for the effects of climate change on the socio-ecological risk of rainfed maize producers. We suggest that transformative adaptation is required for managing the agricultural risk that socio-ecological systems experience under climate change conditions. Such adaptation strategies should include poverty alleviation, promotion of resistant and native varieties of crops, capacity building to improve management and water use, sustainable technification, and soil restoration.

Desde el marco teórico del riesgo ambiental, el presente artículo aborda la gestión de la calidad del aire en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires en relación con los impactos actuales y potenciales de los gases tóxicos y del cambio climático global sobre la salud de la población. Se vinculó información sobre gestión histórica y actual del aire con los resultados del proyecto de investigación South American Emissions, Megacities and Climate para evaluar peligrosidad, exposición, vulnerabilidad e incertidumbre como dimensiones del riesgo. Al contextualizar las políticas públicas desarrolladas en las últimas décadas sobre este tema, fue posible identificar configuraciones de riesgo y de incertidumbres emergentes, amplificadoras de la vulnerabilidad social. Por una parte se confirmó que existe una correlación positiva entre la mortalidad, los cambios en la temperatura y en la contaminación del aire. Por otra se constató la desvinculación entre la gestión de la calidad del aire y la gestión de salud, a la vez que se encontraron limitaciones en las medidas de mitigación propuestas en relación a las emisiones de gases efecto invernadero producidas por los combustibles, señalando las incertidumbres respecto a su eficacia.

The impact that future climatic conditions will have on agricultural productivity depends on the sensitivity to each environmental factor and relative changes in temperature, precipitation and UV-B radiation. The strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is a microclimatic crop cultivated almost worldwide and Spain is the world's second-largest strawberry producer after the USA. Strawberry production in Huelva has been affected by climate change in recent decades. Temperature and solar radiation are primary environmental factors controlling short-day strawberry plant growth and development. Temperature is a limiting factor in crop productivity. We assessed the effect of variations in temperature and solar radiation on strawberry production and crop cycle duration. The study was carried out in commercial strawberry fruit production fields in the province of Huelva (Spain's southwestern coast). Fresh plants of cv. Camarosa were cultivated from October to June. The resulting crop was recorded weekly in the production field: early and total strawberry productions (g/plant), were recorded from January to March and from January to May, respectively. Data revealed that between early production and temperature (R²= 0.86) and between early production and solar radiation (R²= 0.73) there was a linear relationship. However, total production and temperature (R²= 0.69) and total production and solar radiation (R²= 0.69) were related by a quadratic relationship. Our estimates suggest that strawberry production could be affected by climate change. Due to the relationship between yield and temperature, and between yield and solar radiation, climate change scenarios were found to result in reductions in crop cycle duration.El impacto que las condiciones climáticas futuras tendrán en la productividad agrícola, depende de la sensibilidad de cada factor ambiental y de los cambios relativos en la temperatura, precipitación y radiación UV-B. La fresa (Fragaria x ananassa) es un cultivo microclimático que se cultiva en casi en todo el mundo y, España es el segundo productor de fresa después de los EE.UU. La producción de fresa en Huelva se ha visto afectada por el cambio climático en las últimas décadas. La temperatura y la radiación solar son los principales factores ambientales que influyen en el crecimiento y desarrollo de las plantas de fresa de día corto. La temperatura es un factor limitante en la productividad del cultivo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de las variaciones en la temperatura y la radiación solar sobre la producción de fresas y la duración del ciclo de cultivo. El estudio se llevó a cabo en campos de producción comercial de fresa en la provincia de Huelva (costa suroeste de España). Se utilizó planta fresca de la variedad Camarosa. Las plantas fueron cultivadas desde octubre hasta junio. La producción fue cosechada semanalmente. Se tomaron datos de la producción temprana (desde enero hasta marzo) y total (desde enero hasta mayo) expresado en gramos por planta. Los datos revelaron que entre la producción temprana y la temperatura (R²= 0,86) y entre la producción temprana y la radiación solar (R²= 0,73) se observó una relación lineal. Sin embargo, la producción total y la temperatura (R²= 0,69) y la producción total y la radiación solar (R²= 0,69) fueron relacionadas por una relación cuadrática. Nuestras estimaciones sugieren que la producción de fresas podría verse afectada por el cambio climático. Debido a la relación entre el rendimiento y la temperatura, y entre la radiación solar y el rendimiento, los escenarios de cambio climático podrían dar lugar a reducciones en la duración del ciclo de cultivo.

O resultado aponta para o fator socioeconômico como principal contribuinte para a vulnerabilidade na região. A análise de eventos extremos de precipitação, utilizada como indicador climático, mostrou que a variabilidade do clima foi um fator expressivo de vulnerabilidade em 30% dos municípios. A baixa qualidade dos dados epidemiológicos na escala analisada, sobretudo as taxas de incidência, foi o principal fator complicador para regionalização do IVG.La vulnerabilidad por los cambios climáticos en los municipios que constituyen la microrregión de Itajubá, MG - Brasil, fue evaluada a través de la regionalización del Índice de Vulnerabilidad General (IVG), metodología desarrollada por la Fiocruz con base en indicadores socioeconómicos, epidemiológicos y climáticos. El resultado señala al factor socioeconómico como principal contribuyente en la vulnerabilidad de dicha región. El análisis de eventos extremos por precipitación, utilizado como indicador climático, mostró que la variabilidad del clima, expresa la vulnerabilidad de 30% de los municipios en esa región. La escases de información epidemiológica, como la ausencia de datos referentes a las tasas de incidencia, constituyeron el principal obstáculo en la regionalización del IVG.An extension of the General Vulnerability Index - IVG to cover a geographic region was used to assess the vulnerability of the municipalities within the region of Itajubá, MG, Brazil. The IVG methodology, developed by Fiocruz, is based on socioeconomic, epidemiological and climate indicators. The result pointed to socioeconomic factors as the major contributor to vulnerability in the region. As showed by the analysis of extreme precipitation events, climate showed to be an important vulnerability factor in 30% of the cases. The low quality of epidemiological data on regional scale, especially the incidence rates, was the main limiting factor for the regionalization of the IVG.

Los humedales ecosistemas altamente productivos, proveen variados e importantes beneficios a la sociedad traducidos en valores y servicios ambientales, los “oconales” humedales parcialmente anegados, pantanosos o semipantanosos presentes en la región altoandina del Perú sobre los 3.300 m.s.n.m. contienen agua proveniente del deshielo de los nevados, nacientes de los ríos (ojos de agua), de las precipitaciones o de las filtraciones proveniente de los acuíferos. Se ubican en terrenos planos o en depresiones, permaneciendo la mayoría del año inundado permanentemente, constituyéndose en refugio para la biodiversidad. La toma de datos se realizó durante las exploraciones programadas entre Enero – Agosto del 2013, cubriendo recorridos que abarcaron transectos altitudinales y latitudinales, de la Región Altandina del Norte del Perú: oconales de Ancash, La Libertad, Piura, Lambayeque y Cajamarca. Se concluye que los oconales son esosistemas únicos del mundo cuya composición florística y faunística está conformada por 72 especies nativas de plantas y 11 de animales exclusivas del Perú a los que hay que conservar y proteger; pues sin duda juegan un rol preponderante en el equilibrio biológico y ambiental de la puna o jalca del Perú y principales amortiguadores que mitigan en gran medida los efectos de la contaminación minera y otras actividades humanas. L'industrializzazione, conepita come effetto ultimo di quel tradimento, condanna l'essere umano a una condizione di dipendenza e subalternità rispetto alle merci prodotte sul mercato e ai servizi offerti dalle categorie di esperti competenti. In questo modo egli compromette, secondo Illich, il proprio rapporto con gli altri e con la Terra come sua dimora, rinchiudendosi nel guscio della propria individualità, prigioniero dei bisogni creati dal mercato. Ristabilire l'equilibrio ecologico per Illich è possibile solo attraverso un cambiamento sostanziale dei ritmi produttivi, per restituire all'uomo la padronanza degli strumenti e con essa la propria autonomia.

Este artículo explora los efectos del cambio climático y la variabilidad climática sobre la salud humana, colocando el énfasis en las estrategias de adaptación construidas por los actores sociales en el Asentamiento Humano Nuevo Punchana, localizado en la franja inundable de la ciudad de Iquitos, departamento de Loreto, uno de los más importantes ejes urbanos de la amazonía peruana. La investigación intenta demostrar, sobre la base de información cualitativa y cuantitativa, por un lado, que los impactos de las inundaciones severas (cada vez más frecuentes e intensas como consecuencia del cambio climático) se encuentran diferenciadas por el género; y, por el otro, que los actores sociales construyen estrategias de adaptación frente a los estímulos climáticos, actuaciones atravesadas, también, por las diferencias de género. Aunque a primera vista el segmento femenino podría ser clasificado como el más vulnerable al cambio climático (por las inequidades de género estructurales, por su condición especial), la investigación proporciona evidencias de que las mujeres son agentes clave en la construcción de estrategias de adaptación y dar respuestas para afrontarlo. Se advierte, además, que tales estrategias tienen su sustrato en la reproducción de conocimientos tradicionales (como el trabajo colectivo o minga y la práctica de la medicina tradicional) “transportados” a la ciudad por migrantes provenientes en su mayoría de la amazonía rural, y en el despliegue de conocimientos adquiridos en la ciudad. La puesta en escena de dichas estrategias depende en buena medida de la intervención femenina, en tanto las mujeres son las que “distribuyen” el capital social en la localidad estudiada, esto es, los recursos culturales locales en los ámbitos familiar y comunitario.

La riflessione di Timothy Morton si muove all’interno di quel ripensamento del rapporto tra soggetto umano e ambiente – dunque anche dell’umano in generale - che la scienza ecologica è venuta imponendo con sempre maggiore urgenza. A partire da Hyperobjects (2013), tuttavia, Morton si è inserito in quell’ampia ed eterogenea corrente, spesso definita «nuovo materialismo», che nel corso dell’ultimo decennio, sebbene in modi differenti, ha inteso tale ripensamento sempre più come una speculazione eminentemente ontologica: una rinnovata comprensione del modo d’essere dei viventi e della loro interconnessione, in quest’ottica, appare come la via maestra per rimodellare «ecologicamente» la soggettività. In opposizione a questo approccio ontologico ed attingendo a quello critico-decostruttivo sviluppato nel precedente Ecology Without Nature (2007), in questo articolo intendo sottolineare la necessità di riconoscere, anche nell’ambito del pensiero ecologico, il valore costitutivo delle mediazioni epistemiche, linguistiche e sociopolitiche distintive del soggetto umano, ma soprattutto della dimensione di storicità che di queste ultime è il denominatore comune. La frizione tra i due testi di Morton consente infatti di mettere a fuoco l’insufficienza di ogni eco-filosofia che pretenda di ripensare la costituzione del soggetto umano semplicemente tramite l’elaborazione di una differente ontologia dell’ambiente.
