                <text>Background and purpose: Currently clinicians wide world are facing with SARS-CoV-2 pandemy, whose clinical features include fever, dry cough, fatigue and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which can progress to life threatening sequelae. Aim of this study is to evaluate both efficacy and safety of pidotimod in paucisymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 patients without any evidence of concurrent pneumonia.  Methods: Twenty SARS-CoV-2 1:1 allocated (pidotimod vs symptomatic therapy) Brescia-COVID Respiratory Severity Scale 0 patients were enrolled and complaining fever, cough without any sign of respiratory failure. None of them required standard regimens or hospitalization.  Results: At two-brace cohort analysis no significant selection bias between groups were reported. In the absence of relevant drug-induced side effects or disease progression during therapy, the experimental group presented an earlier clinical resolution than the control one (Group A vs Group B: 4.10±2.18 vs 7.50±2.63 days; 95%CI: 1.13 – 5.67, SE: 1.08; p=0.006), as confirmed from a linear regression analysis.  Conclusions:  Pidotimod regimens in selected SARS-COV2 patients could be a viable option to induce symptoms regression, as an earlier defervescence protects from the indolent course of cytokine cascade activation. Rebalancing the immune status with pidotimod may also have prevented the evolution of the infection in patients.</text>

                <text>Las áreas verdes urbanas son de gran importancia para mantener el equilibrio en las ciudades, sin embargo, hay pocos estudios que analicen la percepción social sobre estas áreas. Realizamos una evaluación comparativa de la percepción ambiental que existe en dos comunidades urbanas de San José, Costa Rica. Las comunidades evaluadas se encuentran separadas por el río Ocloro; una presenta un nivel socioeconómico bajo y la otra un nivel medio-alto. Aplicamos encuestas en 40 casas ubicadas a menos de 150 m del río y a los encargados municipales del manejo de los recursos naturales. Realizamos una evaluación cualitativa del estado del río y su área de protección. Además, medimos la cantidad de metros cuadrados de área verde por habitante en imágenes satelitales. Cuantificamos la cantidad de desagües pluviales y de aguas servidas provenientes de cada comunidad y la colindancia de la zona de protección con construcciones, calles y zonas verdes. No encontramos diferencia significativa en la percepción ambiental de las comunidades. Las comunidades identificaron la vegetación y el río como los principales recursos y ventajas, la contaminación y los malos olores como las principales desventajas y, las campañas de educación ambiental, el mantenimiento del cauce y la reforestación como posibles soluciones. Los encargados municipales coincidieron en identificar al vertido de aguas residuales y la invasión de la zona de protección del río como principales problemas ambientales. La percepción ambiental municipal y comunal de la invasión de la zona de protección del río y su entubación fue inconsistente. Por lo tanto, recomendamos adecuar los programas de educación ambiental para que ambas percepciones coincidan y se ajusten a la realidad. La percepción de ambas comunidades es similar, sin embargo, difieren mucho en su comportamiento. La comunidad de nivel socioeconómico bajo vierte más desagües al río, ha invadido el 37,6% de la zona de protección y el 75% de la misma colinda con construcciones. Se recomienda la educación ambiental participativa para modificar el comportamiento de la comunidad de nivel socioeconómico bajo, así como evitar que las construcciones colinden con la zona de protección de los ríos para prevenir la invasión de la misma. Hay desigualdad en la cantidad de áreas verdes por habitante; la comunidad de nivel socioeconómico bajo tiene 19,5 m2 en tanto que la de nivel medio-alto tiene 108,2 m2. Ambos valores son superiores a los recomendados por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas. Sin embargo, esos espacios verdes no siempre son públicos; principalmente en la comunidad de nivel socioeconómico bajo. Por lo tanto, la tasa efectiva de área verde disponible por habitante podría ser menor.</text>

                <text>A strong socio-economic development pressure in South Chile will more and more cause an impact to the present lakes and rivers. Nevertheless, our knowledge concerning the ecological structure and the microbial self-purification capabilities of these lacustrine water bodies is scant but essential for a future sustainable development of land and water use. We studied Lake Laja, a lake already heavily impacted by water diversions for hydropower generation and irrigation. Typical for the Andean region Lake Laja is an oligotrophic water body, limited by nitrogen nutrients. Only very low chlorophyll a and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations and a small abundance and biomass of bacteria (mainly ultramicrobacteria) and heterotrophic flagellates were encountered. Weak trophic interrelations were derived from a high bacteria-to-heterotrophic flagellate ratio. For the ten investigated extracellular enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, leucine, arginine-, glycine and tyrosine-aminopeptidase, &amp;#945;-, &amp;#946;-D-glucosidase, &amp;#945;-, &amp;#946;-D-galactosidase, N-acetyl-&amp;#946;-D-glucosaminidase), with the exception of &amp;#945;-D-glucosidase, a broad range of organic matter degradation activities was proven. Probably, due to the N-limitation, organic nitrogen hydrolysing extracellular enzymes reached activities on average of 45 % compared to other studies in oligotrophic waters. The possible effect of N-limitation on extracellular enzyme activities was more pronounced by cell specific extracellular enzymatic activity rates, which exceeded those of other oligotrophic water bodies on average by factor 2. The overall activities of all microbial extracellular enzymes studied proved to be dominated by the dissolved free external enzymes (up to 98 %) over the ectoenzymes which are associated with particulate organic matter (bacterial cell walls, particles, and aggregates). It is concluded that future socio-economic changes, dealing with watershed human intervention (accelerating inorganic and organic loads) as well as global change (temperature and precipitation changes) could lead to significant changes in the ecology of Lake Laja.La gran presión generada por el desarrollo socioeconómico del sur de Chile, está causando cada vez más un mayor impacto en los lagos y ríos allí presentes. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de la estructura ecológica y la capacidad microbiana de autodepuración de los cuerpos de agua lacustres es escasa, pero esencial para un futuro uso sostenible de los recursos agua y suelo. Se estudió el lago Laja, por ser un cuerpo de agua muy afectado por la extracción de agua para la generación de energía hidroeléctrica y el riego. Como es característico de la región andina, el lago Laja es oligotrófico limitado por nutrientes nitrogenados. Se encontraron bajas concentraciones de clorofila a y carbono orgánico particulado (POC), así como bajas abundancias y biomasa de bacterias (principalmente ultramicrobacteria) y de flagelados heterotróficos. Interrelaciones tróficas débiles se determinaron de la relación bacterias y flagelados heterotróficos. Para las diez enzimas extracelulares estudiadas (fosfatasa, leucina-, arginina-, glicina- y tirosina-aminopeptidasa, a-, b-D-glucosidasa, a-, b-D-galactosidasa, N-acetyl-b-D-glucosaminidasa), con la excepción de &amp;#945;-&amp;#946;-glucosidase, se analizó un amplio rango de actividad de degradación sobre la materia orgánica. Probablemente, debido a la limitación de nitrógeno, el N-orgánico hidrolizado por enzimas extracelulares alcanzó una actividad promedio de 45 %, comparada con otros estudios en aguas oligotróficas. El posible efecto de la limitación de N en la actividad enzimática extracelular, fue más pronunciado en las tasas de la actividad enzimática extracelular específicas, las cuales excedieron en un factor promedio de dos a las de otros cuerpos de aguas oligotróficos. En general, la actividad de todas las enzimas extracelulares microbianas estudiadas resultaron estar dominadas por enzimas externas disueltas libres (hasta el 98 %), más que por ectoenzimas asociadas a partículas de materia orgánica (paredes celulares de bacterias, partículas y agregados). De esta manera es posible concluir que los futuros cambios socioeconómicos, reflejados en el incremento de cargas orgánicas e inorgánicas, así como el efecto del cambio global (cambios en temperaturas y precipitaciones), podrían provocar cambios significativos en la ecología del lago Laja.</text>

                <text>Taxonomically, the Mollusca of the southern end of South America are moderately well known, but the literature is scattered, there is little information on their habitats, and distributional records are scarce for the Chilean archipelago lying between Chiloé Island (42° S) and Tierra del Fuego (55° S). Although much is known about the biology and ecology of of some species of Nacellidae, the taxonomy of the group have been partially neglected, particularly in remote areas of the world such as the Chilean fjords. Therefore, this study aims to clarify the nomenclatural status, and establish the morphological characteristics and distribution of the Chilean Nacellidae. Especially, the following three objectives are pursued: (i) to clarify the correct identity of existing species; (ii) to describe of morphological details, highlighting the clear diagnostic characters of each species, and (iii) to delimitate and discuss their geographical range in Chile. The examination of the Nacellidae of the Chilean fiords has resulted in the recognition of one species of Nacella (Nacella) and seven species of Nacella (Patinigera), wherein the principal specific differences are in the shell (shape, thickness and color) and in radular teeth morphology. The genus Nacella and its subgenus Patinigera are cold-water limpets, and are exclusively inhabitants of Subantarctic and Antarctic waters. The greater part of their range being subantarctic, but extending to the Antarctic by way of the Scotia Arc, and also ranging northward up the Chilean coast to at least Valparaiso at 33° S (only N. (P.) clypeater). They apparently have their centre of distribution in the Magellanic Province of southern South America, corresponding to an area with a high degree of diversification (N. (N.) mytilina, N. (P.) chiloensis, N. (P.) deaurata, N. (P.) delicatissima, N. (P.) flammea, N. (P.) magellanica, N. (P.) venosa), wherefrom the species tends to spread eastward, with a larval transport probably assisted to a considerable extent by the prevailing West Wind Drift which strongly operates in the Subantarctic ZoneLos moluscos del extremo sur de Sudamérica son desde un punto de vista taxonómico moderadamente bien conocidos. Sin embargo, la literatura está dispersa, hay poca información sobre sus hábitat y son muy pocos los registros distribucionales, particularmente en el área de los fiordos comprendidos entre la Isla de Chiloé (42° S) y Tierra del Fuego (55° S). Aunque se sabe bastante acerca de la biología y ecología de algunas especies de Nacellidae, la taxonomía del grupo ha sido relativamente poco estudiada, particularmente en áreas remotas del planeta, como es el caso de los fiordos chilenos. El interés del presente estudio ha sido clarificar el estatus nomenclatural y describir las características morfológicas y distribuciones de los Nacellidae chilenos. En particular, se plantearon los siguientes objetivos: (i) clarificar la identidad de las especies descritas, (ii) descripción de detalles morfológicos, destacando los caracteres diagnósticos de cada especie, y (iii) delimitación y discusión de sus rangos geográficos. El análisis de los Nacellidae de los fiordos chilenos ha permitido el reconocimiento de una especie de Nacella (Nacella) y siete de N. (Patinigera), cuyas principales diferencias a nivel de especie radican en la concha (forma, espesor y color) y en la morfología de la dentición radular. El género Nacella y su subgénero Patinigera son habitantes exclusivos de aguas antárticas y subantárticas. Estos organismos son lapas de aguas frías fundamentalmente subantárticas, pero que también se extienden hacia la Antártica por el área del Arco de Escocia, y hacia el norte a lo largo de la costa chilena, hasta el área de Valparaíso a 33° S (N. (P.) clypeater). Aparentemente este género tiene su centro de distribución en la Provincia magallánica en el sur de Sudamérica, correspondiendo a un área de elevada diversidad de especies (N.                 <text>A elevada produção de dejeto líquido de suínos faz do solo a principal alternativa para a sua utilização na forma de fertilizante orgânico. Contudo, a adição de resíduos orgânicos nos sistemas de manejo do solo é um fator que pode influenciar a biota do solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influencia da aplicação de doses de dejeto líquido de suíno na fauna do solo em diferentes sistemas de cultivos. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em área experimental no município de Taquaruçu do Sul, RS. O delineamento foi em blocos casualisados em arranjo fatorial (2x5), sendo dois sistemas de manejo do solo (mínimo e plantio direto) e cinco doses (0, 20, 40, 80m³ ha-1 de dejeto líquido de suíno e adubação química) com quatro repetições. As coletas da fauna edáfica foram realizadas com armadilhas tipo PROVID, em parcelas de 22,5m². Avaliou-se o total de grupos, colêmbolos, ácaros, abundância, riqueza, índice dominância de Simpson, diversidade de Shannon e o índice de Pielou. Os resultados indicam que o sistema plantio direto associado a 40 e 80m³ ha-1 resultam em maior abundância de organismos, ocasionada pelo maior número de colêmbolos. A população de ácaros é maior no cultivo mínimo, em comparação ao sistema plantio direto na dose de 80m³ ha-1. No sistema plantio direto, a dominância de Simpson aumenta e a diversidade de Shannon diminui com a elevação das doses de dejeto líquido de suíno.</text>

                <text>The research focuses on identifying the way in which Romanian universities managed to provide knowledge during the Coronavirus pandemic, when, in a very short time, universities had to adapt the educational process for exclusively online teaching and learning. In this regard, we analyzed students’ perception regarding online learning, their capacity to assimilate information, and the use of E-learning platforms. An online survey based on a semi-structured questionnaire was conducted. Data was collected from 762 students from two of the largest Romanian universities. The results of the research revealed that higher education institutions in Romania were not prepared for exclusively online learning. Thus, the advantages of online learning identified in other studies seem to diminish in value, while disadvantages become more prominent. The hierarchy of problems that arise in online learning changes in the context of the crisis caused by the pandemic. Technical issues are the most important, followed by teachers’ lack of technical skills and their teaching style improperly adapted to the online environment. However, the last place was assigned by students to the lack of interaction with teachers or poor communication with them. Based on these findings, research implications for universities and researchers are discussed.</text>

                <text>Protein interaction with polymers layers is a keystone in designing bio-nano devices. Polyamidoamines (PAMAMs) are well-known polymers. Zero aromatic core dendrimers (ZAC) are molecules with no proven toxic effect in cultured cells. When coating nanodevices with enzymatic systems, active sites are disturbed by an interaction with the biosystem surface. Computational methods were used in order to simulate, characterize, and quantify protein–polymer interaction. Protein corona, i.e., surface proteins disposed on a viral membrane or nanodevice outer surface, are crucial in interactions with a potential pharmacological target or receptor. Corona symmetry has been observed in the Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (MERS-CoV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). As a protein alpha 1 antitrypsin’s a crystallographic structure was chosen. Protein–mono dendrimer layer systems were generated using in silico methods in order to simulate their interaction. Interactions were quantified using topological and quantum mechanical strategies. Results showed that PAMAM and ZAC interact differently with alpha 1 antitrypsin. Energy and topological surfaces of protein vary accordingly with the dendrimer monolayer. Topological surfaces have a higher sensibility in describing the interactions.</text>

                <text>The effects of salinity of the soil and water on crops can be overcome with the use of biofertilisers. The aim of this study therefore, was to evaluate the effect of salinity and bovine biofertiliser on growth, the production of essential oils, and the carbohydrate and chloride levels in plants of Plectranthus amboinicus, known locally as malvariço. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse from March to May 2013, inplastic pots with a capacity of 7.5 L. The experimental design utilized was fully randomized in a factorial arrangement 2 x 4, with two levels of water salinity (S1= 0.7 and S2=3.1 dS m-1) and four levels of liquid bovine biofertilizer applied to the soil, corresponding to (B1=0, B2=10, B3=20 and B4=30%) the volume of the soil, with five replications. The following variables were evaluated: root, stem and leaf dry weight, and foliar levelsof carbohydrates, chlorides and essential oils. Salinity reduced the dry biomass of the roots; however, the application of biofertiliser, and the interaction between factors did not influence biometric variables, or the levels of carbohydrates or chlorides. Under all the conditions being evaluated, the essential oil of Plectranthusamboinicus showed esters, alcohols, phenols, ketones and terpenoids. = Os efeitos que a salinidade do solo e da água provocam nas culturas podem ser superados utilizandose biofertilizantes. Assim, objetivou-se com o presente estudo avaliar o efeito da salinidade e do biofertilizante bovino no crescimento, na produção de óleos essenciais e nos teores de carboidratos e cloreto de plantas de malvariço (Plectranthus amboinicus). O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no período de março a maio de 2013, em vasos plásticos com capacidade de 7,5 L. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, em um arranjo fatorial 2 x 4, sendo dois níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (S1=0,7 e S2=3,1 dS m-1) e quatro níveis de biofertilizante bovino líquido aplicados ao solo, correspondendo a B1=0, B2=10, B3=20 e B4=30% do volume do solo, com cinco repetições. Foram avaliadas: massa seca da raiz, do caule e das folhas, teores foliares de carboidrato, de cloreto e de óleos essenciais. A salinidade reduziu a biomassa seca das raízes. Porém, a aplicação de biofertilizante e a interação entre os fatores não influenciaram as variáveis biométricas, os teores de carboidratos e os de cloreto. Em todas as condições avaliadas, o óleo essencial de Plectranthus amboinicus apresentou ésteres, álcoois, fenóis, cetonas e terpenóides.</text>

                <text>Fatores edáficos vem sendo indicados como determinantes para a distribuição de comunidades de plantas na Amazônia. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar quais fatores edáficos determinam a ocorrência de leguminosas herbáceas em savanas amazônicas. Para tanto, foi realizado um inventário da flora herbácea da família Leguminosae em 34 parcelas permanentes estabelecidas em duas áreas de savana de Roraima, norte da Amazônia brasileira. As espécies Chamaecrista desvauxii (24,9%), Aeschynomene histrix (15,7%) e Galactia jussiaeana (10,8%) foram as de maior índice de valor de importância. Todas com grande abundância e ampla distribuição. Os resultados indicaram baixa densidade ou ausência de indivíduos e espécies em parcelas estabelecidas em solos mal drenados (hidromórficos). Diversidade e riqueza de espécies tendeu a ser maior em habitats formados por solos bem drenados, mais férteis e com menor concentração de alumínio trocável. É sugerido que solos pobres e sazonalmente alagados reduzam as chances de ocorrência e afetem negativamente a riqueza/diversidade de leguminosas herbáceas nas áreas de savana de Roraima.</text>
