O composto orgânico foi o que apresentou os maiores valores para todas as características avaliadas, exceto para comprimento da raiz.The development of lettuce plantlets was evaluated, employing different substrate types and applying foliar biofertilization. The research was done in a green house in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. The experimental design was of randomized blocks with four replications. The treatments were composed of the interaction substract type (composed organic, Golden Mix 11, washed sand and humus + washed sand 1:1) and fertilizer (the commercial organo-mineral Fertamin, the witness and tree biofertilizer types). Plantlets were foliar fertilized 8 and 15 days after sowing date. Plantlets treated with Fertamim presented the best results in the dry matter of the aerial part, dry matter of roots and number of leaves. Among the biofertilizers, the one based on cattle manure, leached ash, milk and broth of sugar cane presented the lesser values for the same evaluated characteristics. The organic substract presented the highest values for all the appraised characteristics, except for root length. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized factorial scheme: 3 cultivars (Babá-de-Verão, Grand Rapids and Great Lakes) x 3 substrates (washed sand, organic compost and commercial substrate Plantmax®) x 2 (with and without biofertilizer addition), with four replications. The evaluation was done on 24-day old seedlings through number of leaves, shoot height, root length, shoot dry mass and root dry mass. There was an isolated effect for cultivars and substrates with regard to the number of leaves and root length. There was cultivars x substrates interaction effect for shoot height, shoot dry mass and root dry mass. The best result was obtained with cultivar Grands Rapids grown in organic compost. There were no significant effects of biofertilizer addition with respect to the evaluated variables. Para realização do estudo foram aplicados questionários com 55 apicultores, sendo levantados  dados referentes aos aspectos sociais, ambientais, econômicos e da produção de mel. Observou-se que são do sexo masculino, idade média de 49,5 anos, 3,6 pessoas por residências. Pouco mais de 94% tem a apicultura como atividade secundária, 63,63% é natural de Catolé do Rocha-PB, 78,19% residem no município e demais nas cidades adjacentes. 85,45% são casados e deste total 43,64% tem de 1 a 2 filhos, 61,8% tem seus apiários localizados em Catolé do Rocha e 38,2% em outros municípios, 36,36% estão na atividade a mais de 20 anos, 72,3% utiliza a mão-de-obra familiar, 63,6% participaram de cursos para iniciar a atividade apícola, 47,27% trabalha com apicultura para obter renda extra, com 65% dos entrevistados cooperados e 50,9% mencionaram que a importância da apicultura para região é econômica e ambiental. Já 100% dos apicultores afirmaram que o futuro das próximas gerações depende da proteção ao meio ambiente. Cerca 63,6% fazem uso de alimento artificial. Em relação à produção de mel os 55 apicultores possuem 4.847 colmeias, com média de 88 colmeias/apicultor. A produção média foi de 14 kg de mel/colmeias em 2,0 coletas/apicultor/ano, com intervalo médio de 130dias entre coletas o que gerou uma produção média em 2012 de 3.985 kg de mel/apicultor. A maior produção em 2012 foi alcançada entre os apicultores migratórios com 35.240 kg de mel/apicultor. A queda na produção de mel na Microrregião de Catolé do Rocha-PB aconteceu em decorrência da estiagem no ano de 2012, que não ultrapassou 400 mm, refletindo em perda de enxames devido à escassez na produção de floradas, fonte natural de alimentos. Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Damien Contou, Olivier Pajot, Radj Cally, Elsa Logre, Megan Fraissé, Hervé Mentec, Gaëtan Plantefève Description An account of the resource Hypercoagulability and endotheliopathy reported in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) combined with strict and prolonged immobilization inherent to deep sedation and administration of neuromuscular blockers for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) may expose critically ill COVID-19 patients to an increased risk of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (PE). We aimed to assess the rate and to describe the clinical features and the outcomes of ARDS COVID-19 patients diagnosed with PE during ICU stay. From March 13th to April 24th 2020, a total of 92 patients (median age: 61 years, 1st-3rd quartiles [55-70]; males: n = 73/92, 79%; baseline SOFA: 4 [3-7] and SAPS II: 31 [21-40]; invasive mechanical ventilation: n = 83/92, 90%; ICU mortality: n = 45/92, 49%) were admitted to our 41-bed COVID-19 ICU for ARDS due to COVID-19. Among them, 26 patients (n = 26/92, 28%) underwent a Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography which revealed PE in 16 (n = 16/26, 62%) of them, accounting for 17% (n = 16/92) of the whole cohort. PE was bilateral in 3 (19%) patients and unilateral in 13 (81%) patients. The most proximal thrombus was localized in main (n = 4, 25%), lobar (n = 2, 12%) or segmental (n = 10, 63%) pulmonary artery. Most of the thrombi (n = 13/16, 81%) were located in a parenchymatous condensation. Only three of the 16 patients (19%) had lower limb venous thrombosis on Doppler ultrasound. Three patients were treated with alteplase and anticoagulation (n = 3/16, 19%) while the 13 others (n = 13/16, 81%) were treated with anticoagulation alone. ICU mortality was higher in patients with PE compared to that of patients without PE (n = 11/16, 69% vs. n = 2/10, 20%; p = 0.04). The low rate of lower limb venous thrombosis together with the high rate of distal pulmonary thrombus argue for a local immuno-thrombotic process associated with the classic embolic process. Further larger studies are needed to assess the real prevalence and the risk factors of pulmonary embolism/thrombosis together with its prognostic impact on critically ill patients with COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in PAL which occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to evaluate influence of sociodemographic and parental/familial factors on PAL levels before and during pandemic in adolescents from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The sample included 688 adolescents (15–18 years of age; 322 females) who were tested on two occasions: in January 2020 (baseline; before the COVID-19 pandemic) and in April 2020 (follow-up; during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown). Variables included PAL (measured by the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents–PAQ-A) as well as sociodemographic-, parental-, and familial factors. A significant decline in PALs was recorded between baseline and follow-up (t-test: 11.88, p < 0.001). Approximately 50% of adolescents underwent sufficient PAL at baseline, while only 24% of them were achieving sufficient PAL at the time of follow-up measurement. Paternal education was positively correlated (OR (95%CI): baseline: 6.63 (4.58–9.96), follow-up: 3.33 (1.19–7.01)), while familial conflict was negatively correlated (baseline: 0.72 (0.57–0.90), follow-up: 0.77 (0.60–0.99)) with PALs before and during the pandemic. This study highlights the importance of the parent–child relationship and parental/familiar support in promoting physical activity both during regular life and during crises and health challenging situations like the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the trends of changes in physical-activity levels (PALs) in adolescents and factors that may be associated with PALs among the studied boys and girls. Methods: Participants in this prospective study comprised 388 adolescents (126 females; mean age: 16.4 ± 1.9 years) from southern Croatia who were tested at a baseline (before the imposed rules of social distancing) and at a follow-up measurement (three weeks after the initiation). Baseline testing included anthropometric variables, variables of fitness status (done at the beginning of the school year), and PALs. At the follow-up, participants were tested on PALs. PALs were evaluated over an online platform using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents. Results: A significant decrease of PALs was evidenced for the total sample (t-test = 3.46, p < 0.001), which was primarily influenced by a significant decrease of PALs in boys (t-test = 5.15, p < 0.001). The fitness status (jumping capacity, abdominal strength, aerobic endurance, and anaerobic endurance) was systematically positively correlated with PALs at the baseline and follow-up among boys and girls, with the most evident association between aerobic and anaerobic endurance capacities and PALs. Correlations between anthropometric and fitness variables with changes in physical activity (e.g., the difference between baseline and follow-up PALs) were negligible. Conclusions: Differences in PAL changes between genders were probably related to the fact that PALs among boys were mostly related to participation in organized sports. Correlations between baseline fitness status and PALs indicated the importance of overall physical literacy in preserving PALs in challenging circumstances, such as the COVID-19 pandemic observed here.
