However, the role of NK cells during severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has previously not been identified. Peripheral blood NK cells from SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 naïve subjects were evaluated for their activation, degranulation, and interferon-gamma expression in the presence of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins. K562 and lung epithelial cells were transfected with spike proteins and co-cultured with NK cells. The analysis was performed by flow cytometry and immune fluorescence. SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins did not alter NK cell activation in a K562 in vitro model. On the contrary, SARS-CoV-2 spike 1 protein (SP1) intracellular expression by lung epithelial cells resulted in NK cell-reduced degranulation. Further experiments revealed a concomitant induction of HLA-E expression on the surface of lung epithelial cells and the recognition of an SP1-derived HLA-E-binding peptide. Simultaneously, there was increased modulation of the inhibitory receptor NKG2A/CD94 on NK cells when SP1 was expressed in lung epithelial cells. We ruled out the GATA3 transcription factor as being responsible for HLA-E increased levels and HLA-E/NKG2A interaction as implicated in NK cell exhaustion. We show for the first time that NK cells are affected by SP1 expression in lung epithelial cells via HLA-E/NKG2A interaction. The resulting NK cells’ exhaustion might contribute to immunopathogenesis in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Con el objetivo de contribuir a la conservación de S. holguinensis se caracterizaron rasgos morfológicos de sus semillas, requerimientos germinativos, tolerancia a la desecación y tipo funcional de plántula. La germinación se evaluó a una temperatura fija y cuatro termoperiodos (25ºC, 25ºC/30ºC, 25ºC/35ºC, 25ºC/40ºC y 25ºC/45ºC), con dos condiciones de iluminación (luz y oscuridad). La especie posee frutos secos, de tipo silicua dehiscente, con semillas aladas, 97 por fruto como promedio. Las semillas son pequeñas con masa fresca y seca de 3,4 y 3,1 mg, respectivamente, y un contenido de humedad inicial de 9,28%. El embrión es desarrollado, de tipo axial invertido y la relación embrión/semilla alcanzó un valor de 0,95. Además, las semillas destinaron 67,7% de su masa a la formación de estructuras de reserva. La especie no presentó dormancia seminal y las semillas son fotoblásticas indiferentes, aunque la mejor respuesta germinativa se obtuvo a la luz a 25ºC/30ºC. Al aumentar la temperatura del sustrato la velocidad de germinación disminuyó. Las semillas se comportaron como tolerantes a la desecación y las plántulas se clasificaron como fanerocotilar epigea con cotiledones foliáceos. Se discute el papel ecológico de los rasgos de historia de vida identificados en S. holguinensis y su relación con otros árboles tropicales pioneros. Palabras claves: planta tropical pionera, ecología de semilla, temperatura, fotoblastismo ABSTRACT Spirotecoma holguinensis is a endemic pioneer species that grow in serpentine xeromorphic thorny scrub of Holguin, Cuba. In order to contribute to the conservation of S. holguinensis, morphological features of its seeds, germination requirements, desiccation tolerance and seedling functional type were characterized. Germination was assessed in a constant temperature and four thermoperiods (25ºC, 25ºC/30ºC, 25ºC/35ºC, 25ºC/40ºC and 25ºC/45ºC) with two light conditions (light and dark) experiments. The fruits were a dry dehiscent silique, with winged seeds and an average of 97 seeds per fruit. The seeds were small, with fresh and dry weight of 3.4 and 3.1 mg, respectively, and with an initial moisture content of 9.28%. The embryo was developed, axial inverted type and ratio embryo: seed was higher than 0.95, so that embryo occupied 95% of the seed cavity. The seeds allocated 67.7% of its mass to the formation of reserve structures. The species did not present dormancy and seeds were photoblastic indifferent, although the best germination was obtained to light on 25ºC/30ºC. By increasing the substrate temperature, germination rate decreased. The seeds were desiccation tolerant and seedlings were classified as phanerocotylar epigeal with foliaceous cotyledons. We discussed the ecological role of the life history traits identified in S. holguinensis and its relationship with other pioneers tropical trees. Se realizaron pruebas sensoriales para determinar el grado de aceptabilidad de los tres productos, observándose diferencias significativas en textura, y similitud en parámetros como olor, color y sabor; para dicho análisis se compararon las tres variedades con un néctar comercial. Se georreferenciaron 130 unidades productivas de banano clon Williams (Cavendish AAA) distribuidas en cuatro lotes de la finca y tres unidades de suelo. Se determinó el peso del racimo y la cantidad de raíz funcional, para cada planta, y 35 variables físicas y químicas del suelo. Se relacionó la variabilidad espacial de la producción en función de las variables del suelo, a partir de cuatro estrategias: ejes coordenados como covariables; variables físicas y químicas del suelo y raíz funcional como covariables; división del análisis por lotes; y división del análisis por unidades de suelo. La división por lotes resultó ser la mejor estrategia para modelar la variabilidad espacial de la producción de banano. El análisis por este modelo permitió establecer grupos de variables del suelo que se relacionaron significativamente y explicaron más del 69% del peso de los racimos de banano dentro de cada lote. Estos grupos de variables son los de mayor potencial para el establecimiento de un programa de manejo por sitio específico.The objective of this work was to evaluate the spatial variability of banana production, in function of physical and chemical variables of soil and of farm physiographic characteristics, in order to select those with the greatest potential for use in site-specific management program. One hundred thirty productive units of banana clone Williams (Cavendish AAA) distributed in four lots and tree soils units of the farm were georeferenced. The bunch weight and root functionality were determined for each plant, as well as 35 physical and chemical soil variables. The spatial variability of the production was evaluated in function of these soil variables, using four different strategies: axes as covariates; both physic and chemical soil properties as covariates; analysis made by individual plot; and analysis made by soil unit. The individual plot study was the best strategy to model the spatial variability of banana production. This analysis model allowed to set soil variable groups which were significantly correlated and precisely explained more than 69% of the bunch weight inside the plots. These groups of variables are the ones with higher potential for the establishment of a site-specific management program. A pesar de que el principal medio de propagación del cultivo es a través de semilla asexual por estacas (tallos maduros) se ha revelado una relativamente alta diversidad intraespecífica, principalmente en los sistemas de cultivo de manejo tradicional. En esta revisión se documentan algunos estudios realizados sobre la diversidad de la yuca, tanto por marcadores moleculares como morfológicos, centrándose en aquellos realizados en el Amazonas. También se exponen los principales factores que han determinado el aprovechamiento y conservación de esta diversidad, tales como la aparición espontánea de semillas de origen sexual, el sistema de chagras indígenas, la memoria biocultural y la facilidad de intercambio de semilla entre comunidades. Finalmente, se pone de manifiesto que en los sistemas de manejo tradicional la conservación y uso de la diversidad intraespecífica se constituye en un elemento prioritario que se ha perdido en los sistemas de cultivo a gran escala. En los sistemas de manejo tradicional existe un vínculo etnobotánico que pervive e invita a buscar prácticas alternativas que aseguran un mantenimiento de la diversidad, permitiendo una productividad eficiente e incluso se hace un mejor manejo para disminuir los riesgos de incidencia de algunas plagas y enfermedades.
