O estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de analisar o perfil plasmidial, pesquisar genes de virulência e identificar os perfis genéticos de 31 cepas de Vibrio cholerae não O1 isoladas de zooplâncton dos estuários dos rios Anil e Bacanga em São Luis MA. O estudo do DNA plasmidial revelou a presença de 2 a 3 plasmídeos em 10 cepas, com pesos moleculares variando de 5,5 a 40 kilobases. A ribotipagem revelou um perfil comum a todas as cepas. A amplificação do DNA genômico por PCR não revelou os genes ctxA, ace e zot, mostrando tratar-se de cepas não patogênicas, enquanto a RAPD-PCR identificou múltiplos perfis genéticos, achado compatível com o grande potencial de variabilidade desta espécie.The study was developed to analyze the plasmidial DNA, research virulence genes and identify genetic diversity of 31 strains of Vibrio cholerae non-O1 isolated from zooplankton of the Bacanga and Anil rivers in São Luis-MA. The study of plasmidial DNA showed 2 or 3 plasmids from 10 strains between 5.5 and 40 kilobasis. There was only single ribotype pattern. PCR methods did not show the genes ctxA, ace and zot, while RADP-PCR identified genetic diversity in the strains, showing the potential for variability in this species.

Las pesquerías artesanales asociadas a métodos de buceo son fuente de ingreso, empleo y seguridad alimentaria de zonas costeras en muchos países. Los altos precios y la poca movilidad de especies bénticas capturadas por buceo enfrentan retos cada vez mayores en su aprovechamiento y manejo, esto demanda un entendimiento integral de estas pesquerías en diferentes contextos, incluyendo la dinámica espacial y temporal del esfuerzo pesquero, las artes y las especies. En el presente estudio se busca elucidar si existen diferencias en las estrategias de pesca desarrolla- das por pescadores que emplean buceo en dos modalidades (hookah y buceo libre). También se busca conocer si se desarrollan adaptaciones de estas estrategias en el tiempo, bajo qué condiciones y el posible efecto de las estrategias sobre las capturas. Para ese fin se analizó información detallada de las operaciones de pesca de embarcaciones artesanales que operan en la costa del océano Pacífico de Costa Rica durante dos temporadas de pesca. Se analizó información obtenida a bordo de embarcaciones como: sitio de pesca, composición de especies, tiempo de pesca, número de inmersiones por viaje, entre otros; y se aplicaron entrevistas a buzos al momento de las descargas para obtener información de precios, el volumen de las especies capturadas y forma de operación de los pescadores. Para el buceo con hookah se obtuvo una muestra del 69.3% del total de viajes en las dos temporadas de pesca y en el caso del buceo libre se obtuvo una muestra del 41.9% del total de viajes en las dos temporadas de pesca estudiadas (2007-2008 y 2011-2012). Se identificaron más de 15 especies en cada temporada de pesca, dominaron tres categorías en ambas temporadas pero con diferencias en las proporciones obtenidas en cada caso: langosta (Panulirus gracilis), pulpo (Octopus sp) y pez loro (Scarus perrico y S. Ghobban). Resalta un componente importante de captura retenida por los pescadores para consumo personal, incluyendo especies de alto valor comercial. Se identificaron cambios en las estrategias de pesca asociadas a cambios en las capturas y cambios en la asignación espacial del esfuerzo pesquero de una temporada de pesca a otra, definidas por la adición de buceo nocturno, aumento en el número de inmersiones de una temporada a otra y procesos de cooperación en las faenas de pesca de buzos que usan buceo libre. Se discute las potenciales causas de los cambios en las estrategias de pesca observadas y se derivan implicaciones para el manejo que permiten la sostenibilidad de estas pesquerías a largo plazo.

El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar la diversidad y dinámica poblacional de los nematodos fitoparásitos asociados al tomate en los departamentos de León y Chinandega pertenecientes al occidente de Nicaragua. Durante el ciclo agrícola 2010-2011 se muestrearon cinco plantaciones en cada departamento. Se realizaron ocho muestreos en cada plantación para un total de 80 muestras en las diez plantaciones seleccionadas. Estas fueron tomadas a 10 m entre sí en forma de zig-zag. Se extrajeron los nematodos de suelo mediante el método de Baermann modificado y extracción de nematodos de raíces mediante el método de macerado y tamizado de raíces. Los datos obtenidos fueron correlacionados con factores que afectan las poblaciones de nematodos, tales como tipo de suelo, rotación de cultivos y precipitaciones. Igualmente se describió el crecimiento poblacional de los principales géneros mediante modelos matemáticos. Las densidades más altas fueron obtenidas de muestras de suelo, los más frecuentes en 100 g de suelo fueron especies no identificadas de Meloidogyne sp. con 739, Pratylenchus con 555, Tylenchorhynchus 386 y Helicotylenchus 252 individuos. Se evidenció también que el factor precipitaciones no tuvo un efecto significativo sobre las poblaciones de nematodos. Finalmente, Meloidogyne y Pratylenchus presentaron un crecimiento poblacional que se ajusta a un modelo matemático lineal (R2=0,98 para ambos géneros), donde existió una correlación positiva y lineal entre las etapas fenológicas del tomate y el incremento de nematodos en el suelo.

BINABITROP is a bibliographical database of more than 38 000 records about the ecosystems and organisms of Costa Rica. In contrast with commercial databases, such as Web of Knowledge and Scopus, which exclude most of the scientific journals published in tropical countries, BINABITROP is a comprehensive record of knowledge on the tropical ecosystems and organisms of Costa Rica. We analyzed its contents in three sites (La Selva, Palo Verde and Las Cruces) and recorded scientific field, taxonomic group and authorship. We found that most records dealt with ecology and systematics, and that most authors published only one article in the study period (1963-2011). Most research was published in four journals: Biotropica, Revista de Biología Tropical/ International Journal of Tropical Biology and Conservation, Zootaxa and Brenesia. This may be the first study of a such a comprehensive database for any case of tropical biology literature.BINABITROP es una base de datos bibliográfica con más de 38 000 registros sobre los ecosistemas y organismos de Costa Rica. En contraste con bases de datos comerciales como Web of Knowledge y Scopus, que excluyen a la mayoría de las revistas científicas publicadas en los países tropicales, BINABITROP registra casi por completo la literatura biológica sobre Costa Rica. Analizamos los registros de La Selva, Palo Verde y Las Cruces. Hallamos que la mayoría de los registros corresponden a estudios sobre ecología y sistemática; que la mayoría de los autores sólo registraron un artículo en el período de estudio (1963-2011) y que la mayoría de la investigación formalmente publicada apareció en cuatro revistas: Biotropica, Revista de Biología Tropical/International Journal of Tropical Biology, Zootaxa y Brenesia. Este parece ser el primer estudio de una base de datos integral sobre literatura de biología tropical.

El artículo busca establecer la evolución del cultivo de la palma de aceite en la región del Catatumbo desde la década de los años noventa hasta el año 2010, analizando el modelo económico nacional, regional y departamental que impulsó este tipo de agroindustrias inmersas en políticas de desarrollo rural. This work consists of a theoretical approach and has as main objective to bring classical discussions of the anthropology and sociology of religion to an emerging question in contemporary society: the ecological question. For this reason, it will be held, first, an analysis, bringing classical authors and contemporary, around the main concepts about the topic as: religion, magic, and secularization. Then will resume a historical study conducted by Keith Thomas (2010) around the changes in European sensitivities communities with nature. The purpose is to demonstrate how different sensitivities surrounding the nature are being formulated in the constructions of visions of world guided by Religion. Finally, after a brief discussion about the process of secularization in contemporary society, we will discuss how the ecological question emerges significantly changes in the forms of live and see the world, bringing the religious field to the ecological question.

Introducción. Para entender la ecología de las enfermedades es necesario comprender los agentes patógenos en la interfaz de vida silvestre y ganado. Los cerdos silvestres (Sus scrofa) constituyen un problema sanitario cuando se trata de prevenir y controlar las enfermedades zoonóticas, pues en ocasiones sus poblaciones son portadores de agentes infecciosos transmisibles a los cerdos domésticos y a otras especies animales, incluidos los seres humanos. Objetivo. Priorizar las enfermedades zoonóticas en la interfaz de cerdos silvestres, animales domésticos y seres humanos. Materiales y métodos. Se utilizó el método de priorización semicuantitativa basado en 27 criterios sustentados en publicaciones recientes, los cuales se clasificaron en las siguientes cinco categorías con base en la etiología viral: epidemiología (ocho), prevención y control (tres), economía y comercio (cuatro), salud pública (nueve) y sociedad (tres). A cada criterio se le adjudicó un coeficiente entre 0 y 7 de acuerdo con su impacto medido con base en la información científica (suma total de 189). La información sobre los criterios para las nueve enfermedades virales analizadas se recolectó mediante la revisión de 81 fuentes publicadas entre 1977 y 2015. Resultados. Las tres enfermedades con mayor puntaje y potencial zoonótico fueron la influenza porcina (133), la hepatitis E (123) y la infección por hantavirus (103), y la mayor puntuación se observó en los criterios de epidemiología y salud pública. Conclusión. Los métodos semicuantitativos de priorización son una fuente de información para la toma de decisiones, pero su utilización es poco frecuente en los países en desarrollo por la falta de datos de vigilancia en salud pública. El control de las enfermedades que afectan tanto a los seres humanos como a los animales silvestres, requiere el desarrollo de estrategias que reduzcan la transmisión de patógenos de estos a los animales domésticos y a los seres humanos.

La abundancia y estructura poblacional son pará-metros importantes para evaluar y comparar el estatus de conservación de una población a través del tiempo en un área determinada. Este estudio describe la abundancia y estructura poblacional de Crocodylus acutus en la laguna Palmasola, Oaxaca. El trabajo consistió en recorridos nocturnos, entre las 21 y 24h, durante la fase de luna nueva para contabilizar el número de individuos y obtener estimaciones poblacionales. El tamaño poblacional estimado fluctuó de 32.7 a 93 individuos según el modelo utilizado. Las tasas de encuentro registradas fluctuaron de 32 a 109.3 ind/km lineal durante los 40 recorridos efectuados con un tiempo promedio de navegación de 18 minutos. Existió una marcada dominancia de la clase III (subadultos), seguido por la clase II y en menor proporción las clases IV y V, así como aquellos individuos en los que no se pudo determinar el tamaño corporal, en ambas épocas del año. Mientras tanto, los individuos juveniles (Clase II) se observaron en mayor proporción asociados al manglar que cubre las orillas del cuerpo de agua (26.1%), los individuos subadultos (Clase III) a menudo se observaron sobre el espejo de agua sin vegetación flotante (22.7%) y entre el manglar que cubre las orillas del cuerpo de agua (15.7%), mientras que los ejemplares adultos se observaron con mayor frecuencia sobre el espejo de agua sin vegetación flotante (9.7%). Con la presente información se contribuye al conocimiento de la ecología poblacional de C. acutus en la laguna Palmasola donde el tamaño poblacional estimado parece mostrar valores altos con respecto a lo reportado en otros estados de la República Mexicana.

Buva é o nome popular de plantas daninhas do gênero Conyza pertencentes à família Asteraceae e representadas no Brasil particularmente por duas espécies Conyza canadensis e Conyza bonariensis. Ambas infestam áreas de cultivo agrícola, além de campos, áreas de pastagem e áreas não-cultivadas. Suas características biológicas como a produção de grande quantidade de sementes viáveis, capacidade em se desenvolver sob palhada e dispersão a longas distâncias, tornam-se importantes infestantes em áreas de cultivo, especialmente em sistema de semeadura direta (SSD). Com essa prática, visando à manutenção da cobertura vegetal e o não revolvimento do solo, o manejo de plantas daninhas se limitou ao controle químico. Essas duas espécies, adaptadas às características de SSD, sofreram pressão de seleção devido à intensa e repetida utilização dos mesmos herbicidas, surgindo e se multiplicando biótipos resistentes a diversos ingredientes ativos. O conhecimento da ecofisiologia das espécies permite o desenvolvimento e implantação de práticas culturais adequadas para reduzir os efeitos negativos da infestação cada vez maior de Conyza. Dada à importância dessas espécies nos agroecossistemas, e a necessidade de informações sobre a sua biologia germinativa, objetivou-se nesta revisão, descrever as características morfo-fisiológicas dessas espécies, além de relatar o desenvolvimento da resistência a herbicidas.AbstractHorseweed is the popular name of weeds belonging to Asteraceae family and represented in Brazil, particularly by two species: Conyza canadensis and Conyza bonariensis. Both species infest areas of agricultural crop, besides fields, pasture and no-cultivated areas. Their biological characteristics as the production of great amount of viable seeds, ability in develop under straw and dispersion over long distances make them important in the no till system. Due to the practice of maintenance of the vegetable covering and the non-revolving of the soil, weed management was limited to the chemical control. Those two species, when adapted to the DSS characteristics, underwent selection pressure due to the intense and repeated use of the same herbicides, which led to the emergence and spread of biotypes resistant to different active principles. The knowledge regarding ecophysiology of such species allows the development and adoption of appropriate cultural practices to reduce the negative effects of the increasing Conyza infestation. Given the importance of these species in agroecosystems, and the need for information on its germination biology, this review aimed at describing the morpho-physiological characteristics of these species, and report the development of resistance to herbicides.
