                <text>OBJETIVO: Abelhas africanizadas são mais agressivas, enxameiam várias vezes ao ano e utilizam grande variedade de locais para nidificar, diferentemente das européias. Tal comportamento proporciona maior contato com a população, o que pode aumentar o número de acidentes. Assim, realizou-se estudo com o objetivo de conhecer o comportamento dessas abelhas, assim como a identificação de estratégias mais eficientes de manejo e orientação à população. MÉTODOS: A fonte de dados foi constituída de 3.061 registros de solicitações da população atendidas pelo Centro de Controle de Zoonoses do Município de São Paulo, de 1994 a 1997, para retirada de colméias e enxames. Foram analisados locais mais freqüentes de instalação de colônias e pouso de enxames, além da correlação com variáveis climáticas. Para isso, utilizou-se o coeficiente de Pearson. RESULTADOS: Os valores diários apresentaram correlação positiva com temperatura média e grau de insolação, e negativa com umidade relativa e pluviosidade. As colônias instalaram-se preferencialmente em construções artificiais; os enxames em árvores. CONCLUSÕES: Períodos do ano com altas temperaturas e baixo índice pluviométrico estão relacionados a maior atividade das abelhas e maior número de enxames, propiciando maior contato com a população. Objetos como caixas e tambores não devem ficar expostos; deve-se vedar forros e paredes, pois são abrigos em potencial para colônias e enxames. Áreas arborizadas servem de refúgio para enxames. Deve-se ter atenção em contato com áreas verdes e não se deve manusear enxames.OBJECTIVE: Africanized bees are the most aggressive bees, form swarms several times a year and build their nests in a great variety of places different from European bees. This behavior brings them into closer contact with human populations, thus giving rise to a larger number of injuries. A study was carried out to gain greater knowledge on these bees' behavior and thus create more efficient strategies for dealing with them and educating the population on this regard. METHODS: Data consisted of 3,061 registries of requests to the Center for the Control of Animal Diseases of São Paulo for removing bee colonies and wandering swarms in the period between 1994 and 1997.An evaluation of the most frequent nesting sites and their correlation with climatic variables was conducted using Pearson's coefficient. RESULTS: There were 3,061 requests in the study period and the daily volume had a positive correlation with average temperature and degree of insolation and a negative correlation with relative humidity and rainfall. The colonies showed a likelihood for nesting in artificial constructions and the wandering swarms for nesting in trees. CONCLUSIONS: Those periods of the year characterized by high temperatures and low rainfall are related to greater activity of bees and a larger number of wandering swarms, thus giving rise to increased contact with human populations. Items such as boxes and oil-drums should not be left outdoors and ceilings and walls should be sealed off, as they are potential nesting sites for colonies and swarms. Wooded areas may harbor swarms, thus care should always be taken when in the proximity of such areas. No attempt should be made to handle swarms.</text>

                <text>El bagazo de la caña de azúcar es un residuo lignocelulósico que se ha propuesto como materia prima para la producción de etanol. El aprovechamiento de esta biomasa con el objetivo de obtener etanol está basado en la transformación de los polímeros contenidos en el material en azúcares fermentables. Este trabajo presenta el estudio de la hidrólisis enzimática del bagazo de caña de azúcar fraccionado, empleando enzimas comerciales donadas por Novozymes. Se obtuvo una solución de glucosa que posteriormente se fermentó a etanol empleando una cepa de Saccharomyces cereviciae. Los estudios de fermentación se realizaron en un fermentador de la marca Marubishi completamente automatizado de 5 L de capacidad que contenía 2,5 L del licor hidrolizado ymiel diluida. La producción de etanol se monitoreó por cromatografía gaseosa y el consumo de azúcares reductores totales por el método del ácido 3,5 Dinitro Salicílico (DNS). La concentración de azúcares reductores totales en el licor hidrolizado, según la metodología propuesta, fue de 51 g/L, y la eficiencia del proceso de producción de etanol en estas condiciones experimentales estuvo en el orden del 87,53 % con respecto al máximo teórico para este proceso.</text>

                <text>Elder group is the one with the risk of being infected with Coronavirus Disease 19 (Covid-19). It is very important to prevent Covid-19 transmission with any attempt, particularly in elders. This research aimed to help explain the importance of maintaining immunity and preventing Covid-19 transmission to elders in order to be alerted to Covid-19 in Surakarta Indonesia. This qualitative research with explorative approach employed purposive sampling technique. Unit of analysis consisted of elders in many areas in Surakarta, Chief Executive of Covid-19 Management Acceleration Task force of Surakarta City, pulmonologist and nurses in Dr. Moewardi Surakarta Hospital, Chairperson of Surakarta City’s Health Office (DKK), Head of Disease Control and Environmental Health Division of Surakarta Health Office, and Chairperson of Surakarta City’s Social Office. Data collection was conducted through observation, in-depth interview, and documentation, and then method and data source triangulations. Data analysis was conducted using an interactive model of analysis with Parsons’ system theory. The result of research showed that the Covid-19 prevention in elders in Surakarta was conducted through improving their physical immunity, nursing care for elders, nursing care for family, and preventing physical, and mental and psychosocial health problems in elders.</text>

                <text>Different types of noncoding RNAs like microRNAs (miRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been shown to take part in various cellular processes including post-transcriptional gene regulation during infection. MiRNAs are expressed by more than 200 organisms ranging from viruses to higher eukaryotes. Since miRNAs seem to be involved in host–pathogen interactions, many studies attempted to identify whether human miRNAs could target severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) mRNAs as an antiviral defence mechanism. In this work, a machine learning based miRNA analysis workflow was developed to predict differential expression patterns of human miRNAs during SARS-CoV-2 infection. In order to obtain the graphical representation of miRNA hairpins, 36 features were defined based on the secondary structures. Moreover, potential targeting interactions between human circRNAs and miRNAs as well as human miRNAs and viral mRNAs were investigated.</text>

                <text>Introduction: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been declared a worldwide public health emergency. Dentists are the health care providers most directly exposed to this condition, since their area of activity is the mouth, a location recognized as the site through which the disease is transmitted.  Objective: Clarify some notions about COVID-19 and the measures to be taken to prevent transmission to dental care providers.  Main remarks: A single method has not been discovered which meets all the requirements concerning infections associated to medical care. In the struggle against COVID-19 an important role is played by standard precautions, i.e. measures applied to all patients, irrespective of their diagnosis or whether they are known to have an infection or be colonized by a given agent. SARS-CoV-2 is an enveloped virus, a characteristic that makes it more sensitive to the action of disinfectants.  General considerations: COVID-19 presents non-specific symptoms, the most common of which are fever, anorexia and dry coughing. Transmission probably occurs by the spread of the virus in the air and by direct contact. Implementation of standard precautions, among which are hand hygiene, the use of personal protection equipment and care for the environment, will lead to a reduction in the chances of contagion and will contribute to control the spread of the disease. It is important for medical care providers, among them dental care professionals, and the public at large to know about this new virus, so that coordinated, timely and effective actions may be taken which will help prevent the occurrence of new cases or bad results in the struggle against this pandemic.</text>

O Brasil ocupa a quarta posição entre os maiores produtores do tubérculo, onde, se destaca tanto nutricionalmente quanto culturalmente. Diante disso, este trabalho objetiva analisar se a modernização da cadeia produtiva da mandioca no Brasil tem acontecido em consonância com as inovações tecnológicas. Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática da literatura a partir da busca de artigos científicos, publicados entre os anos de 1990 e 2020, nas bases de dados da Scielo, Scopus e Web of Science. Após um processo de triagem, foram selecionados 13 estudos que objetivaram responder a seguinte pergunta questão: Nos últimos anos, no Brasil, a cadeia da mandioca tem acompanhando as tendências de inovação tecnológica? Verificou-se que a mandioca tem diversas aplicações na indústria de alimentos, entretanto a forma é ineficiente, visto que grande parcela da produção é advinda da agricultura familiar, que geralmente utiliza técnicas rudimentares e plantas com pouca resistência a pragas e doenças, além da baixa produtividade. Por fim, conclui-se que há espaço para aumento da produtividade, melhoria na conservação dos tubérculos, diminuição dos impactos ambientais e desenvolvimento de novos produtos, porém é necessário amenizar gargalos como a falta de investimentos financeiros e de assistência técnica, componentes essenciais para modernização da cadeia produtiva da mandioca no Brasil.     ABSTRACT: Cassava is one of the most consumed starchy foods in the world, second only to rice and corn. Brazil ranks fourth among the largest tuber producers, where it stands out both nutritionally and culturally. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze whether the modernization of the cassava production chain (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in Brazil has taken place in line with technological innovations. A systematic literature review was carried out based on the search for scientific articles, published between 1990 and 2020, in the databases of Scielo, Scopus and Web of Science. After a screening process, 13 studies were selected that aimed to answer the following question: In recent years, in Brazil, has the cassava chain been following trends in technological innovation? It was found that cassava has several applications in the food industry, however the form is inefficient, since a large portion of the production comes from family farming, which generally uses rudimentary techniques and plants with little resistance to pests and diseases, in addition to low productivity. Finally, it is concluded that there is room for increasing productivity, improving the conservation of tubers, reducing environmental impacts and developing new products, but it is necessary to alleviate bottlenecks such as the lack of financial investments and technical assistance, essential components for modernization of the cassava production chain in Brazil.</text>

                <text>Temperature is the most pervasive abiotic environmental factor for aquatic organisms. Fluctuations in temperature range lead to changes in metabolic performance. Here, we aimed to identify whether surpassing the thermal preference zones is correlated with shifts in universal cellular stress markers of protein integrity, responses to oxidative stress and lactate content, as indicators of anaerobic metabolism. Exposure of the Lake Baikal endemic amphipod species Eulimnogammarus verrucosus (Gerstfeldt, 1858), Ommatogammarus flavus (Dybowski, 1874) and of the Holarctic amphipod Gammarus lacustris Sars 1863 (Amphipoda, Crustacea) to increasing temperatures resulted in elevated heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) and lactate content, elevated antioxidant enzyme activities (i.e., catalase and peroxidase), and reduced lactate dehydrogenase and glutathione S-transferase activities. Thus, the zone of stability (absence of any significant changes) of the studied molecular and biochemical markers correlated with the behaviorally preferred temperatures. We conclude that the thermal behavioral responses of the studied amphipods are directly related to metabolic processes at the cellular level. Thus, the determined thermal ranges may possibly correspond to the thermal optima. This relationship between species-specific behavioral reactions and stress response metabolism may have significant ecological consequences that result in a thermal zone-specific distribution (i.e., depths, feed spectrum, etc.) of species. As a consequence, by separating species with different temperature preferences, interspecific competition is reduced, which, in turn, increases a species' Darwinian fitness in its environment.</text>

                <text>Note editor : retraction of case report  https://doi.org/10.25796/bdd.v3i1.54503   Dear Editor-in-chief, By this letter we would like to retract our case report entitled « First viral replication of Covid-19 identified in the peritoneal dialysis fluid of a symptomatic patient» that we submitted to your journal one week ago. We indeed wanted to inform the renal community of a potential presence of Covid-19 virus in the peritoneal dialysis fluid in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis treatment. However, the patient general status impaired and he was transferred to an intensive care unit for acute myocardial insufficiency. During this stay, he was re-checked for a number of other organs alterations. A total of 7 RT-PCR SARS-Cov2 tests , validated by the National Reference Center, were done : 2 by nasopharyngeal swabs, 1 in bronchoalveolar lavage, 3 peritoneal dialysate and one in stool. A serological test was also performed. All tests were found negative. The CT scan was analyzed again by a specialized radiologist and although a COVID-19 pulmonary disease was likely, it was not possible to rule out a pulmonary edema secondary to an acute myocarditis of different origin. Therefore, based on these later information, and after careful discussion with the virologists, we think that the first positive PCR result was erroneous, without clear explanation for this. Until new cases appear, the fact that two subsequent peritoneal dialysate carefully processed were negative indicates that we cannot reliably prove a peritoneal dialysate contamination by COVID-19 virus in our patient.                 <text>The cultivation of oleaginous plants like the castor bean guarantees employment for agricultural families and can contribute in energy and chemical sectors, especially in the northeastern semi-arid regions of Brazil. Boron (B) deficiency is a widespread nutritional disorder despite the fact that various anthropogenic sources with high B content may increase soil B to toxic levels for plants. The present study was designed to investigate the ultrastructural effects of boron deficiency and toxicity on castor bean plants which were grown under greenhouse condition using plastic containers with 10 L of nutrient solution. Boron treatments comprised: control (no B); 0.27 mg L-1, 5.40 mg L-1 B pots (one plant per pot), tested in a completely randomized design with three replicates. The dry matter of all plant parts and B concentration were determined. Cellular ultrastructure was evaluated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy on samples of leaves and petioles. Dry matter yield was affected by the B absence treatment but there was no difference for the 5.4 mg L-1 B (toxic conditions) treatment. A marginal leaf burn at edge and tips of oldest leaves and absence of starch granules in chloroplasts were noted for the B toxicity treatment. The deformation of the youngest leaves, the death of the apical meristem as well as the swelling of the middle lamella, absence of starch granules in chloroplasts and petiole vessels untidily were observed in the B absent treatment. It is concluded that the production and development of castor bean plants is affected by boron deficiency, but not for boron toxicity conditions.A mamoneira é uma oleaginosa com grande potencial para a geração de renda na agricultura familiar e para produção de matéria prima para a indústria química e setor energético brasileiro, especialmente em regiões do semi-árido nordestino. A deficiência de boro (B) ocorre de forma generalizada no Brasil e a aplicação excessiva deste micronutriente pode causar toxicidade. Este estudo avalia o desenvolvimento e os efeitos ultra-estruturais de deficiência e toxicidade de boro em mamoneira. O experimento foi realizado em condições de casa de vegetação, com vasos de 10 L de solução nutritiva. Foram utilizados três tratamentos: testemunha (sem B); 0,27 e 5,40 mg L-1 B, uma planta por vaso, em delineamento experimental inteiramente ao acaso com três repetições. A produção de matéria seca de cada parte da planta foi avaliada e o teor de boro determinado. Foram observados os efeitos morfológicos e as alterações na ultra-estrutura celular nas folhas e pecíolos, através da técnica de microscopia eletrônica de transmissão e varredura. A produção de matéria seca da mamoneira foi afetada em condições de deficiência de boro, mas não em condições de toxicidade (5,4 mg L-1 B). Neste último tratamento foram constatadas cloroses nos bordos de folhas velhas e ausência de grânulos de amido. Na omissão de boro, as plantas apresentaram deformação de folhas novas, morte do meristema apical, engrossamento da lamela média, ausência de grânulos de amido nos cloroplastos e desorganização dos vasos condutores do pecíolo. O desenvolvimento e a produção da mamoneira são afetados em condições de deficiência de boro mas não na condição de toxicidade.</text>
