Plant metabolites have been used for many years to control pests in animals and to protect crops. Here, we reviewed the available literature, looking for the species of Mexican flora for which extracts and metabolites have shown activity against pest insects and parasitic nematodes of agricultural importance, as well as against nematodes that parasitize domestic cattle. From 1996 to 2018, the search for novel and eco-friendly biopesticides has resulted in the identification of 114 species belonging to 36 botanical families of Mexican plants with reported biological effects on 20 insect species and seven nematode species. Most plant species with detected pesticide properties belong to the families Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Lamiaceae. Eighty-six metabolites have been identified as pesticidal active principles, and most have been terpenoids. Therefore, the continuation and intensification of this area of research is very important to contribute to the generation of new products that will provide alternatives to conventional pesticide agents. In addition, future studies will contribute to the recognition and dissemination of the importance of propagating plant species for their conservation and sustainable use.

En este artículo se hace un análisis de las principales tendencias de la industria azucarera mexicana durante las últimas dos décadas, a fin de entender el desarrollo y evolución competitiva de esta industria en México, bajo los actuales desafíos que le imprime la globalización de los mercados y sus efectos a nivel local-regional. Se estima que esta industria genera cerca de tres millones de empleos directos e indirectos con una fuerte concentración regional en el estado de Veracruz, el cual produce aproximadamente 40% de la producción nacional de azúcar. Sin embargo, la sobreproducción y el descenso de los precios internacionales del azúcar, así como la creciente participación de sustitutos más baratos provenientes principalmente de Estados Unidos, como lo es el jarabe de maíz de alta fructosa, han afectado a la industria azucarera mexicana y a las regiones que se especializan en esta actividad.

El comportamiento del fuego es uno de los componentes de la ecología del fenómeno y su caracterización es necesaria para su manejo y control. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar el comportamiento del fuego en un pastizal ubicado en el sitio ecológico 'media loma' ubicado en el Campo Experimental 'La María', INTA EEA Santiago del Estero (28º 03' S 64º 15' E) en una posición intermedia del paisaje, entre el bosque de dos quebrachos y la sabana. El fuego se aplicó en seis parcelas de dos sitios de estudio, estimándose la composición botánica, la carga de combustible fino y la densidad aparente del combustible en función de la altura en cada una de ellas. El comportamiento del fuego se caracterizó mediante la estimación de la velocidad de avance del frente de fuego y la longitud de llamas. Los datos obtenidos se analizaron mediante análisis de la varianza empleando 'sitio de estudio' como variable independiente. Las correlaciones entre variables fueron evaluadas mediante el coeficiente de correlación de Kendall (¿). Aunque ubicados en un mismo sitio ecológico, los sitios de estudio presentaron dominancia diferencial de dos especies nativas, Trichloris pluriflora (E.) Fournier y Pappophorum pappipherum (Lam.) Kuntze. Las dos especies poseen diferente proporción de tallo y hoja en su biomasa aérea, diferencia que se reflejó en la carga de combustible fino y su densidad aparente (p > F = 0,0001 en ambos casos) y en la velocidad de avance del frente de fuego (p >F = 0.0001). Esta última fue de 28 m*min-1 en el sitio de estudio 1, con dominancia de la primera especie; y 21 m*.min-1 en el sitio de estudio 2, con dominancia de la segunda, respectivamente. La longitud de llamas promedio fue de 3,5 m, pero superó los 6 m cuando participaron en la propagación del fuego especies arbustivas que poseen aceites esenciales y resinas en su follaje. Se observó correlación positiva y significativa (p < 0,0001) entre velocidad de avance, carga de combustible y densidad aparente, pero la misma no fue significativa entre las dos primeras variables y la longitud de llamas. Los fuegos en la comunidad estudiada fueron de alta intensidad y muy rápidos, requiriendo de cortafuegos y/o medidas indirectas para su control y manejo.

Se describe al país bajo un enfoque socio-económico tanto de la población en general como de la rural y, en particular, de las características zootécnicas de las Unidades Productivas bovinos carne. Aunado a la proyección en al aumento de la población humana y su demanda alimenticia, se enfatiza un escenario cuestionable sobre el deterioro en la calidad de vida rural, acentuado por un impacto negativo en el ambiente. En contraste, se cuestiona la adopción de políticas públicas del sector, enfocadas en atender la seguridad alimentaria con base en importaciones, su impacto negativo en la producción nacional y el menoscabo en la soberanía alimentaria. ABSTRACT Ecomorphological patterns of the fish community were evaluated in the trans-Andean Alvarado River drainage, Colombia. A total of 29 species using 25 ecomorphological indices were analyzed to test how well the ecomorphological patterns are related to the fish assemblage. Although a significant correlation was found (Mantel test) between morphological attributes and trophic guilds, habitat use and distribution across the altitudinal gradient, only the last two were significantly independent of the phylogenetic relationships (partial Mantel test). Regarding the ecomorphological space, two main trends were defined. First, benthic periphytivores and invertivores were characterized by having dorsal or dorsolateral eyes, labial appendages, depressed bodies and well-developed pectoral, ventral and caudal fins, which provide them the ability to stabilize over the substrate and make rapid movements. Second, nektonic detritivore-invertivores and insectivores were found to have laterally compressed bodies, lateral eyes and larger eyes and anal fins. These species use vision during predation, are good continuous swimmers and possess higher maneuverability and stability. These results show that the fish assemblages in the Alvarado River drainage are structured ecomorphologically mainly by habitat and the altitudinal gradient. Therefore, this is evidence of the importance of habitat structure to maintain the functionality of the ecosystem.

La urbanización global y masiva de los territorios es el más importante fenómeno ecológico de la actualidad. Los estándares de crecimiento urbano son determinantes para la conservación de la diversidad biológica, y asimismo para el grado de calidad de vida de las poblaciones urbanas. Contrariamente a la percepción de los biólogos y de otros académicos, de las ciudades como ambientes estériles y opuestos a la naturaleza, el reciente desarrollo de la ecología urbana, ciencia necesariamente interdisciplinaria, nos demuestra que ciudades son ecosistemas heterotróficos que necesitan ser planeados para que sus impactos en la biosfera sean disminuidos, y que en paralelo su capacidad de sostener la biodiversidad sea incrementada.

El cultivo del Phaseolus vulgaris es de vital importancia para la economía campesina latinoamericana, ya que es uno de los ingredientes básicos de la dieta alimentaria. En Colombia se cultivan alrededor de 104 175 hectáreas con una producción de 130 988 toneladas al año, cantidad insuficiente para abastecer la demanda interna, por lo que es necesario aumentar el rendimiento de este cultivo sin incrementar los costos de producción. Por tanto, en esta investigación se estimó el desempeño del Phaseolus vulgaris con la aplicación de Arachis pintoi como abono verde en lo referente al crecimiento y al rendimiento, para lo cual se establecieron en casa de mallas 6 tratamientos con un testigo, se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar con 4 bloques. Los tratamientos consistieron en la aplicación de abono verde fresco incorporado al suelo (T1) y sobre la superficie (T2), abono verde seco incorporado al suelo (T3) y sobre la superficie (T4) y cenizas del abono verde incorporadas al suelo (T5) y sobre la superficie (T6), al testigo no se le aplicó abono verde. Al finalizar el ensayo se evaluaron variables asociadas a la acumulación de materia seca y variables asociadas a rendimiento. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron diferencias estadísticas (p≤0,05) entre tratamientos para la mayoría de las variables evaluadas. Los mejores desempeños en crecimiento y rendimiento los presentaron de mayor a menor el T2, T4 y T1, y los de más bajo desempeño en orden descendente fueron el T6, testigo y T5. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos, se concluye que la aplicación de abono verde contribuye a incrementar la biomasa seca y el rendimiento del Phaseolus vulgaris, pero este incremento no está relacionado con los nutrientes que aporta el abono verde, pues los tratamientos con solo cenizas fueron los que presentaron los más bajos desempeños en las variables evaluadas.

Foi investigado, no período de outubro de 1997 a outubro de 1998, a possível associação de Vibrio cholerae com o zooplâncton dos estuários dos rios Anil e Bacanga, em São Luis - MA, Brasil, a presença da forma viável, mas não cultivável de Vibrio cholerae O1 e a correlação entre pH, salinidade e temperatura da água com a sobrevivência da bactéria. Amostras de zooplâncton foram coletadas em dois pontos fixos em cada estuário. O método clássico de isolamento e imunofluorescência direta foram empregados na detecção da bactéria. Nas 52 amostras obtidas de zooplâncton houve predomínio de Copepodes. O cultivo permitiu a obtenção de 55 isolados de Vibrio cholerae não O1. Os sorogrupos O1 e O139 foram demonstrados, respectivamente em 37 (71,1%) e 17 (32,7%) na imunofluorescência. Formas viáveis, mas não cultiváveis de Vibrio cholerae O1 foram detectadas em 70,8% das amostras estudadas. Correlação significativa foi constatada entre salinidade e pH da água e isolamento de Vibrio cholerae.This study was carried from October 1997 to October 1998 with the purpose of investigating the link between the species Vibrio cholerae and zooplankton in the estuaries of rivers Anil and Bacanga in São Luis, Maranhão. Research of viable but non culturable forms of Vibrio cholerae O1, and analyze the correlation between pH values, salinity and water temperature with the presence of bacteria in zooplankton samples. The traditional method of cultivation and fluorescent antibody technique were applied to detect the bacteria. A total of 52 samples of zooplankton were collected. There was a predominance of Copepoda. The culture enabled 55 isolates of Vibrio cholerae non-O1. The serogroups O1 and O139 were identified in 37 (71.1%) and 17 (32.7%) samples respectively by the fluorescence. Viable but non culturable forms of Vibrio cholerae were detected in 70.8% of the samples studied. A significant correlation was established between salinity and the water's pH value and Vibrio cholerae.
