Caracterización morfo-ecológica y composición de briofitos en pastizales rocosos en el Cerrado Brasileño. El objetivo de este estudio es proporcionar información sobre las relaciones ecológicas y la composición florística de la comunidad de briofitos en los pastizales rocosos del Cerrado brasileño en el estado de Minas Gerais. Hay pocos estudios de comunidad de briofitos y su relación con el ambiente para Cerrado brasileño, además de esto, estos ambientes son sometidos a presiones intensas. Para este estudio se seleccionaron al azar nueve transectos de 50 m con un total de 45 parcelas para analizar la composición y las características morfo-ecológicos de las comunidades de briófitos. Las medidas de diversidad se realizaron utilizando el software PAST y EstimateS para realizar el agrupamiento de las especies encontradas entre las tres diferentes áreas de pastizales rocosos. Se encontraron 176 ocurrencias de 47 especies de briofitos en el área de rocas. La familia más rica de musgos fue Leucobryaceae (Bryophyta) con siete especies y Lepidoziaceae (Marchantiophyta) para hepáticas con nueve especies. Antóceros no fueron encontrados. De acuerdo con PCoA (Análisis de Coordenadas Principales), la composición florística de la comunidad de briofitos en los pastizales rocosos es homogénea, sin diferencias entre las parcelas estudiadas. La comunidad tiene predominio de especies terrestres, colonizadoras de largo plazo, tolerantes a la luz directa del sol y la desecación. Esas características están relacionadas con su ciclo de vida.

The purpose of this work was to analyze the social-economical contributions from the followup procedure carried out by the Project: Reference Networks for Family Agriculture, which is being developed in the State of Paraná since 1998, in partnership with the Agronomical Institute of Paraná (IAPAR) and the Rural Extension and Technical Assistance Company of the State of Paraná (EMATER/PR). This analysis consists of two stages: firstly, the accomplishment of an economical-financial analysis, based on the data gathered in one of the followed-up properties, trying to identify if there was an increase in the income of this family and a better use of the production factors (land, capital and labor); secondly, by means of an interview with a semistructured questionnaire, it was tried to identify and analyze the family farmer’s perspective about his participation in this project as well as his level of satisfaction.Este trabalho procurou analisar as contribuições socioeconômicas decorrentes do acompanhamento realizado pelo Projeto Redes de Referências para a Agricultura Familiar, o qual está sendo desenvolvido no Estado do Paraná, desde 1998, numa parceria entre o entre o Instituto Agronômico do Paraná (IAPAR) e a Empresa Brasileira de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (EMATER/PR). Esta análise consiste em duas etapas: primeiro, a realização de uma análise econômico-financeira, com base nos dados coletados em uma das propriedades acompanhadas, buscando identificar se houve um incremento na renda dessa família e uma melhor utilização dos fatores de produção (terra, capital e mão de obra); na segunda etapa do trabalho, por meio de uma entrevista com questionário semi-estruturado, procurou-se identificar e analisar a perspectiva do agricultor familiar acerca da participação neste projeto, bem como seu grau de satisfação.

Avaliou-se a viabilidade da exploração do morangueiro, no Paraná, em duas áreas, 0,3 ha (área média cultivada pela agricultura familiar) e 1 ha, por um ano. Elaborou-se uma planilha de fluxo de caixa a partir da qual se calcularam: Período de Recuperação do Capital (PRC), Retorno sobre Investimento (RI), Valor Presente Líquido (VPL) e Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR). Todos para Custo Operacional Efetivo (COE), Custo Operacional Total (COT) e Custo Total de Produção (CTP). Para uma situação considerada normal, os indicadores de rentabilidade calculados foram (Tipo de custo: VPL área-padrão (TIR área- padrão) / VPL área efetiva (TIR área efetiva)) COE: US$ 17.856,55 (42%) / US$ 4.795,85 (39%); COT: US$ 5.182,40 (11%) / - US$ 1.691,97 (-13%); CPT: US$ 4.846,26 (10%) / -US$ 1.792,80 (-14%). Fez-se a análise de cenários para os fatores produtividade, preço de venda e mão de obra, analisando o VPL e a TIR. Verificou-se que o tamanho da área influenciou na viabilidade econômica, mostrando a importância de se determinar anualmente a área mínima viável para a agricultura familiar. Os resultados indicaram que a cultura é viável em curto prazo, quando considerado o COE como parâmetro de análise, mas pode não se sustentar em prazos maiores quando se consideram o COT, o CTP e a variação de alguns fatores de produção. Pela análise de cenários definidos pelos fatores de produção analisados, o VPL e a TIR alteram-se para níveis que oferecem risco à exploração.

During the period of 1950 through 2000, a green-revolution-based model mostly for commodities boosted global agricultural production. From the 70’s, this design became consolidated in Brazil and other countries because of policies and strategies by states and private groups. However, some doubts has been raised on its environmental and socioeconomic issues, in special for family farming. This study aimed to contribute by identifying changes and resistance in agricultural structures, systems and demographic aspects of this model and its adoption by farmers. It was carried out in the state of Paraná - Brazil, within the microregion of Toledo and in the northern pioneer area, which represent the history and diversity of this state about socioeconomic and human aspects, as well as technical development. It was based on statistics of agricultural censuses (1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1996 and 2006), population censuses (1970, 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010) and municipal agricultural production data (1980-2012). Data from both areas were compared to each other and analyzed in face of state changes. There has been a decrease in farming properties and rural population, with an outstanding decline in the number of young people and women. Moreover, results showed a large reduction of properties with 20 to 50 ha, and an increase in those of up to 2 ha. Such decline is due to technological standard changes throughout the period, as well as recent grants offered to rural areas, as housing and leisure spaces. Both regions showed expansion of soybean plantations, but integrating distinctively to agriculture and, finally, family farming continuity, despite the intense changes.

In general, the technical and agronomic benefits of no-till farming are widely known and well documented in the literature. However, studies focusing on the economics of no-tillage are scarce. In this context, the objective of this study is to determine whether no-till grain production systems that follow the principles of conservation agriculture are economically profitable by analyzing gross margins per hectare per year over six harvests for the agricultural years 1998/1999 to 2003/2004. In addition, a possible link between profitability and different no-till methods in terms of degree of soil turnover, crop rotation, and whether machinery used in agricultural operations is owned or rented is investigated. For this purpose, the multi-case analytical method was applied to thirteen grain producing family farms in Northern Paraná state, Brazil. Based on the results, two ranges of agricultural production variable costs and gross margins were identified. Higher gross margins were associated with longer use of the no-till system, ownership of machinery and equipment, specialization in grains, rotation of the commercial crops used, and higher variable costs. Lower gross margins were associated with outsourcing of sowing, small-scale cropping, and lack of crop rotation. It is concluded that family mechanized no-till systems of grain production in north Paraná are profitable.

O presente artigo trata do modelo de desenvolvimento econômico predominante no sistema capitalista e aponta as consequências ambientais negativas que decorrem desse e afetam as regiões globais periféricas. Para tanto, realizou-se um resgate histórico que abrangeu as práticas dos países imperialistas na modernidade e observou-se a degradação ambiental no âmbito internacional. Ademais, adotou-se o método de abordagem materialista histórico-dialético e o instrumental teórico marxista para a análise da crise socioambiental, com o auxílio de documentação indireta enquanto técnica de pesquisa. Em sede conclusiva, verificou-se que a territorialização dos impactos ambientais negativos é um efeito intrínseco ao capitalismo imperialista no período globalizado, que especialmente ocorre em detrimento dos países pobres e pode ser explicada em razão de relações de exploração social e ambiental ao longo da história, que culminaram no arranjo sociopolítico e econômico internacional da contemporaneidade.

Most post COVID-19 follow-up studies are limited to a follow-up of 3 months. Whether a favorable evolution in lung function and/or radiological abnormalities is to be expected beyond 3 months is uncertain. We conducted a real-life follow-up study assessing the evolution in lung function, chest CT and ventilation distribution between 10 weeks and 6 months after diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia. Seventy-nine patients were assessed at 6 months of whom 63 had chest CT at both follow-up visits and 46 had multiple breath washout testing to obtain lung clearance index (LCI). The study group was divided into a restrictive (n = 39) and a non-restrictive subgroup (n = 40) based on TLC z-score. Restriction was associated with a history of intubation, neuromuscular blockade use and critical illness polyneuropathy. Restriction significantly improved over time, but was not resolved by 6 months (median TLC z-score of -2.2 [IQR: -2.7; -1.5] at 6 months versus -2.7 [IQR: -3.1; -2.1] at 10 weeks). LCI did not evolve between both follow-up visits. Symptoms and chest CT score improved irrespective of restriction. We observed a disconnect between the improvement of COVID-19 related symptoms, chest CT lesions, and corresponding lung function. While CT imaging is almost normalized at 6 months, a further reduction of pulmonary restriction may be hoped for beyond 6 months in those patients showing restriction at their first follow-up visit.

Over the past few years there has been a large rise in the field of robotics. Robots are being in used in many industries, but there has not been a large surge of robots in the medical field, especially the robots for healthcare use. However, as the aging population keeps growing, current medical staff and healthcare providers are increasingly burdened by caring for the ever-growing number of senior patients, especially those with cognitive impairment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementia (ADRD) patients. As a result, we can expect to see a large increase in the field of medical robotics, especially in forms of socially assistive robots (SARs) for senior patients and healthcare providers. In fact, SARs can alleviate AD and ADRD patients and their caregivers’ unmet medical needs. Herein, we propose a design outline for such a SAR, based on a review of the current literature. We believe the next generation of SARs will enhance health and well-being, reduce illness and disability, and improve quality of life for AD and ADRD patients and their caregivers.
