Los primeros modelos para evaluar la vulnerabilidad climática de estos ecosistemas sólo incorporan sus elementos ecológicos; actualmente la mayoría incorpora sus elementos socio-ecológicos. En México, se encontró este tipo de modelos en reportes, informes, manuales y capítulos de libro; la mayoría presentan modelos metodológicos para evaluar la vulnerabilidad socio-ecológica de estos ecosistemas y están enfocados principalmente a la capacidad de adaptación en las áreas naturales protegidas; también se observa la colaboración entre diversas instituciones gubernamentales, de la sociedad civil —nacionales e internacionales— y académicas.
