El biochar es una alternativa de acción climática, accesible, de bajo costo y sostenible. Su aplicación como enmienda permite incrementar la fertilidad del suelo y reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero como el CO2. Por ende, es necesario implementar el biochar como tecnología de emisión negativa frente al cambio climático, disminuir los impactos negativos en el ambiente y salvaguardar la salud de las personas. La investigación es una revisión de literatura holística y sistemática disponible sobre el uso del biochar como estrategia de mitigación, debido a su capacidad de secuestro de carbono, y sobre el potencial de sus aplicaciones e interacciones que presenta con el clima, la seguridad alimentaria y los componentes del ecosistema. Se encontró que el potencial de secuestro de carbono presentado por el biochar en equivalencias de CO2 supera las 20 GtCO2eq por año. Esto es muy significativo en la búsqueda de tecnologías de emisiones negativas eficientes que ayuden a reducir las emisiones de CO2 que generan las actividades antropogénicas anualmente.

En este trabajo se presentan nuevos aportes sobre la historia natural de la mulita pampeana Dasypus hybridus (Desmarest, 1804) (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae). Los estudios de campo fueron llevados a cabo en 100 ha de cuatro establecimientos agropecuarios de la provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Durante tres años se realizó un muestreo estacional de armadillos por captura y liberación. Se obtuvieron datos de hábitos alimentarios, uso del espacio y del tiempo, comportamiento, termorregulación, datos poblacionales y morfológicos. Se realizaron 71 capturas. En la dieta el ítem principal registrado fue material vegetal, seguido por hormigas e insectos coleópteros; no se observó una diferencia estacional en los hábitos alimentarios. La actividad de las mulitas se concentra durante el día, existió una baja en la frecuencia de observación durante las estaciones frías (otoño e invierno). La mulita pampeana prefiere suelos húmicos, terrenos altos y pastizales densos y altos; asimismo seleccionan los montes para refugiarse. Son individuos asociales. La temperatura rectal mostró correlaciones positivas con la temperatura ambiente. La proporción de sexos fue cercana a uno y no se observó dimorfismo sexual. Los resultados obtenidos concuerdan parcialmente con lo observado para otras especies del género, destacando las tendencias observadas en los hábitos alimentarios y en la estrategia termorregulatoria. Este trabajo representa un aporte en varios aspectos de una especie poco estudiada en una zona bajo importantes presiones de uso y modificación de hábitat.

Fue hija de dos distinguidos botánicos argentinos (Nélida S. Troncoso y Arturo E. Burkart), esposa de Antonio Hall, y madre de Andrew y Sonia. Quienes la conocimos siempre destacaremos, además de su conocimiento de la flora y la ecología, su generosidad intelectual y su predisposición a escuchar y ayudar a los colegas. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess linkages between microclimate and longer-term ENSO-related weather forcing on the week-to-week changes in dengue prevalence in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, over a recent decade of dengue observations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An auto-regressive model to evaluate the role of climatic factors (sea-surface temperature) and weather (maximum temperature, minimum temperature, precipitation) on dengue incidence over the period 1995-2005, was developed by conducting time-series analysis. RESULTS: Dengue incidence increased by 2.6% (95% CI: 0.2-5.1) one week after every 1ºC increase in weekly maximum temperature and increased 1.9% (95% CI: -0.1-3.9) two weeks after every 1 cm increase in weekly precipitation. Every 1ºC increase in sea surface temperatures (El Niño region 3.4 ) was followed by a 19.4% (95% CI: -4.7-43.5) increase in dengue incidence (18 weeks later). CONCLUSIONS: Climate and weather factors play a small but significant role in dengue transmission in Matamoros, Mexico. This study may provide baseline information for identifying potential longer-term effects of global climate change on dengue expected in the coming decades. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the potential associations between climate and weather events and dengue incidence in this geographical area.OBJETIVO: Evaluar los vínculos entre el microclima, las variables relacionadas al fenómeno de El Niño Oscilación del Sur (ENSO) y los cambios en el reporte semanal de casos de dengue en el área de Matamoros, Tamaulipas, México, a lo largo de una década de observaciones. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se desarrolló un modelo autorregresivo para evaluar la influencia de factores climáticos (temperatura superficial del mar) y tiempo (temperatura máxima, temperatura mínima y precipitación) sobre la incidencia de dengue, a lo largo de 11 años (1995-2005), empleando análisis de series de tiempo. RESULTADOS: La incidencia de casos de dengue aumentó 2.6% una semana después de cada 1ºC de incremento en la temperatura máxima semanal (95% IC: 0.2, 5.1); observamos también que los casos de dengue aumentaron 1.9% dos semanas después de cada centímetro de incremento en la precipitación semanal (95% IC: -0.1, 3.9). Cada 1ºC de aumento en la temperatura superficial del mar en la región Niño 3.4 fue seguida, 18 semanas después, de un aumento de 19.4% en la incidencia de casos de dengue (95% IC: -4.7, 43.5). CONCLUSIONES: Los factores de clima y tiempo tienen una influencia menor, aunque significativa, sobre la transmisión del dengue en la ciudad fronteriza de Matamoros, México. Este estudio aporta información basal para identificar efectos potenciales de mayor alcance, relacionados con el cambio climático global sobre los casos esperados de dengue en las próximas décadas. Hasta donde sabemos, este es el primer estudio que evalúa las posibles asociaciones entre los eventos climáticos y tiempos y la incidencia de casos de dengue en la frontera de México con Texas.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue colectar información sobre aspectos de la ecología reproductiva y de la distribución espacial y temporal de los nidos, la composición y las características ambientales de dos sitios de desove, además de la mortalidad de los desoves, las características morfológicas de los nidos, huevos y neonatos, y la proporción sexual de las crías de Podocnemis erythrocephala. El número de huevos/nido de P. erythrocephala vario entre 4 y 16. Hubo relación significativamente positiva entre el número y el peso medio de los huevos. la proporción sexual de las crías fue aproximadamente 1:1. Una relación positiva fue hallada entre el suceso de eclosión y el tiempo de incubación de los huevos. La distribución de los nidos en los diferentes hábitat (campiña limpia, campiña sucia y cerrado) fue más concentrada en las áreas de campiña limpia (64,57%), que son las áreas menos ricas en vegetación de las campiñas. Apenas 7,5% dos nidos fueron puestos en las playas. Fue encontrada una relación positiva entre el número y el peso de los huevos. 85,14% de los nidos se distribuyeron a menos de 300 metros del cuerpo de agua y 87% fueron encontrados a distancias inferiores a 25m de la frontera de la vegetación arbórea. Los datos encontrados en este estudio fueron semejantes a los expuestos por BATISTELA (2003). La estructura de la vegetación (arbórea, arbustiva o rastrera) puede influenciar en la temperatura y estructura de los nidos especialmente sobre el tiempo de incubación y el sexo de las crías. Estos datos pueden contribuir para el manejo adecuado de esta especie, que es ampliamente consumida por los moradores locales. Las áreas de campiña limpia fueron las más utilizadas para la postura, por lo que deben ser una prioridad de conservación para la reproducción de la especie en estudio.
