The purpose of this study was to evaluate the trend in mortality at our large tertiary academic health system and factors contributing to this trend. This is a retrospective cohort study of intensive care unit (ICU) patients diagnosed with COVID-19 between March and August 2020 admitted across 14 hospitals in the Philadelphia area. Collected data included demographics, comorbidities, admission risk of mortality score, laboratory values, medical interventions, survival outcomes, hospital and ICU length of stay (LOS) and discharge disposition. Chi-square (χ2) test, Fisher exact test, Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel method, multinomial logistic regression models, independent sample t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. A total of 1,204 patients were included. Overall mortality was 39%. Mortality declined significantly from 46% in March to 14% in August 2020 (P < 0.05). The most common underlying comorbidities were hypertension (60.2%), diabetes mellitus (44.7%), dyslipidemia (31.6%) and congestive heart failure (14.7%). Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) use was more commonly associated with the patients who died, while the use of remdesivir, tocilizumab, steroids and duration of these medications were not significantly different. Peak values of ferritin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), C-reactive protein (CRP) and D-dimer levels were significantly higher in patients who died (P < 0.05). The mean hospital LOS was significantly longer in the patients who survived compared to the patients who died (18 vs. 12, P < 0.05). The mortality of patients admitted to our ICU system significantly decreased over time. Factors that may have contributed to this may be the result of a better understanding of COVID-19 pathophysiology and treatments. Further research is needed to elucidate the factors contributing to a reduction in the mortality rate for this patient population. Bravo, León A. Bravo Description An account of the resource Hymenoglossum cruentum (Hymenophyllaceae) is a poikilohydric, homoiochlorophyllous desiccation-tolerant (DT) epiphyte fern. It can undergo fast and frequent dehydration-rehydration cycles. This fern is highly abundant at high-humidity/low-light microenvironments within the canopy, although rapid changes in humidity and light intensity are frequent. The objective of this research is to identify genes associated to desiccation-rehydration cycle in the transcriptome of H. cruentum to better understand the genetic dynamics behind its desiccation tolerance mechanism. H. cruentum plants were subjected to a 7 days long desiccation-rehydration process and then used to identify key expressed genes associated to its capacity to dehydrate and rehydrate. The relative water content (RWC) and maximum quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) of H. cruentum fronds decayed to 6% and 0.04, respectively, at the end of the desiccation stage. After re-watering, the fern showed a rapid recovery of RWC and Fv/Fm (ca. 73% and 0.8, respectively). Based on clustering and network analysis, our results reveal key genes, such as UBA/TS-N, DYNLL, and LHC, orchestrating intracellular motility and photosynthetic metabolism; strong balance between avoiding cell death and defense (CAT3, AP2/ERF) when dehydrated, and detoxifying pathways and stabilization of photosystems (GST, CAB2, and ELIP9) during rehydration. Here we provide novel insights into the genetic dynamics behind the desiccation tolerance mechanism of H. cruentum. Apesar de o clima possivelmente ter influenciado na liberação de K, não causou diferenças significativas na decomposição de matéria seca e na liberação de N e fósforo. As plantas de soja, cortadas em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento, apresentam taxas similares de decomposição e de liberação de nutrientes.The objective of this work was to evaluate the dynamics of decomposition and release of nutrients from aerial plant parts of the soybean cultivar Celeste used as green manure. A randomized block design was adopted with five replications. Soybean plants were cut close to the soil surface 55, 85 and 115 days after emergency (DAE), and analysed to determine their decomposition and release of N, P, K, Ca and Mg, by placing 60 g of fresh material of the aerial part in nylon screen bags, that were distributed on field plots surface . Their functions are not yet completely understood; however, they can provide tolerance against multiple environmental stress factors. Recent evidence suggested that CaOx crystals function as carbon reservoirs since its decomposition provides CO2 that may be used as carbon source for photosynthesis. This might be advantageous in plants with reduced mesophyll conductance, such as the Antarctic plant Colobanthus quitensis, which have shown CO2 diffusion limitations. In this study, we evaluate the effect of two CO2 concentrations in the CaOx crystals decomposition and chlorophyll fluorescence of C. quitensis. Plants were exposed to airflows with 400 ppm and 11.5 ppm CO2 and the number and relative size of crystals, electron transport rate (ETR), and oxalate oxidase (OxO) activity were monitored along time (10 h). Here we showed that leaf crystal area decreases over time in plants with 11.5 ppm CO2, which was accompanied by increased OxO activity and only a slight decrease in the ETR. These results suggested a relation between CO2 limiting conditions and the CaOx crystals decomposition in C. quitensis. Hence, crystal decomposition could be a complementary endogenous mechanism for CO2 supply in plants facing the Antarctic stressful habitat. Utilizando el análisis de contenido como herramienta metodológica y el programa MAXQDA, se han explorado las dimensiones que configuran la ciudad resiliente. Los resultados del análisis de las cinco Estrategias de Resiliencia urbana muestran una divergencia de metas y acciones en el camino de la construcción de la ciudad. No obstante, lejos de convertirse en una limitación, los resultados avalan la utilidad del marco teórico-conceptual utilizado en la comprensión del concepto de resiliencia urbana. | Cities around the world are facing a climate change challenge, that has gone from being nothing more than a theory to being a real-life threat. The global dimension of climate change makes cities the main actors in adaptability after any climate change disruptive effects. Rockefeller Foundation has now adopted the mission of presenting a different perspective, called urban resilience. Its “100 resilient cities” programme that aims to facilitate the construction of resilient cities. This study explores how a resilient way of thinking has been addressed in the five European cities that have designed their own Urban Resilience Strategy with the help of the Rockefeller Foundation. Based on content analysis as a methodological tool and thanks to the MAXQDA programme, the dimensions of resilient cities have been explored. The results of the analysis of the five Urban Resilience Strategies show a goals and actions difference on the pathway of constructing a resilient city. Far from becoming a limitation, results support the utility of the theoretical-conceptual framework.
