Rationale Detailed data on the characteristics and outcomes of patients with COVID-19 in sub-Saharan Africa are limited.Objective We determined the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Uganda.Measurements As of the 16 May 2020, a total of 203 cases had been confirmed. We report on the first 56 patients; 29 received hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and 27 did not. Endpoints included admission to intensive care, mechanical ventilation or death during hospitalisation.Main results The median age was 34.2 years; 67.9% were male; and 14.6% were <18 years. Up 57.1% of the patients were asymptomatic. The most common symptoms were fever (21.4%), cough (19.6%), rhinorrhea (16.1%), headache (12.5%), muscle ache (7.1%) and fatigue (7.1%). Rates of comorbidities were 10.7% (pre-existing hypertension), 10.7% (diabetes) and 7.1% (HIV), Body Mass Index (BMI) of ≥30 36.6%. 37.0% had a blood pressure (BP) of >130/90 mm Hg, and 27.8% had BP of >140/90 mm Hg. Laboratory derangements were leucopenia (10.6%), lymphopenia (11.1%) and thrombocytopenia (26.3%). Abnormal chest X-ray was observed in 14.3%. No patients reached the primary endpoint. Time to clinical recovery was shorter among patients who received HCQ, but this difference did not reach statistical significance.Conclusion Most of the patients with COVID-19 presented with mild disease and exhibited a clinical trajectory not similar to other countries. Outcomes did not differ by HCQ treatment status in line with other concluded studies on the benefit of using HCQ in the treatment of COVID-19.

Europa, en un firme propósito por superar los retos que supone, aboga por una nueva estrategia de crecimiento capaz de transformarla en una economía moderna, eficiente en el uso de los recursos y competitiva, con un triple objetivo de partida: dejar de producir emisiones netas de gases de efecto invernadero en 2050; un crecimiento económico disociado del uso de recursos; que ninguna persona ni lugar se queden atrás. El logro de una economía sostenible en la Unión Europea toma, en principio, como hoja de ruta el Pacto Verde Europeo, pero trata de ir más allá en su propósito de ser climáticamente neutra en 2050, para lo que se ha propuesto una Ley Europea del Clima que convierta el actual compromiso político en una obligación legal.

Fundamento: En regiones extensas y diversificadas, como Aragón, se cree la necesidad de dividirlas en áreas en función de las variables atmosféricas disponibles, para seleccionar una estación meteorológica representativa. El objeto de este artículo es determinar la existencia de regiones isotérmicas y seleccionar las estaciones representativas con el fin de estudiar la correlación entre variables de temperatura y mortalidad diaria. Métodos: Se seleccionaron datos diarios de temperatura máxima y mínima para el periodo comprendido entre enero de 1987 y diciembre de 2006. Para determinar las zonas isotérmicas se realizó un análisis de conglomerados jerárquicos y un análisis factorial discriminante, así como un tratamiento previo de datos de relleno de lagunas y detección de heterogeneidades en las series climáticas. Se analizaron datos de 93 estaciones (44 en Huesca, 15 en Teruel y 34 en Zaragoza). Resultados: De los resultados del análisis para la regionalización de Aragón extrajimos que un solo factor explica la varianza de cada serie. En temperaturas máximas ese único factor explicó el 93,43% de la varianza y la estación que representó un mayor factor de correlación fue Huesca-Monflorite (correlación=0,984). Para temperaturas mínimas un único factor explicó el 90,88% de la varianza, siendo la estación con mayor factor de correlación Pallaruelo de Monegros (correlación=0,976). Conclusiones: Se consideró que Aragón es una única región isotérmica con una única estación representativa de la variabilidad de las temperaturas, Zaragoza-Aeropuerto, con una correlación en temperaturas máximas de 0,980 y en mínimas de 0,974.

Los objetivos del trabajo fueron establecer un jardín de introducciones de albahaca y contribuir en la caracterización botánica de las cultivariedades introducidas al banco de germoplasma. La colección se realizó en el departamento del Valle en campos de cultivo, áreas de vegetación natural, huertos caseros y mercados locales. En 6 zonas se recolectaron 17 introducciones, pertenecientes a 5 especies del genero Ocimum tres cultivadas (O. basilicum L., O. americanum Jacq Host y 0. minimum L.) y dos ornamentales (O. gratissimum Hook y O. micranthum Willd). Se determinó visualmente alta variación para características fenotípicas tales como arquitectura de plantas, presencia de pubescencia, tipo de inflorescencia, flores, hojas y frutos.The objetives of this work were the collection and stablishment of a garden of albahaca and a contribution to the botanical characteristic of the cultivars introduced in the germoplasm bank .The collection was gathered at cultivated fields, natural vegetation areas, house gardens and local markets. Seventeen (17) species were collected, all belonging to the generous Ocimum from six different zones of Valle del Cauca. Three species are cultivated (O. basilium L., O. americanum Jack Host y O. minimum L.) and two are considered ornamentals (O. gratissimum Hook y O. micranthum Willd). Phenotipicaly, high variety was observed in the plant architecture, in its pubescence presence, in the type of inflorescence and in flowers, leaves and fruits.

Se hace una revisión de la literatura más importante y reciente publicada en EE. UU., Inglaterra, Holanda, Alemania y Rusia, países que más sehan preocupado por resolver el problema del Phytophthora en la papa, y la relacionada especialmente con el aspecto de pérdidas que causa, razas del parásito, métodos genéticos para la obtención de variedades resistentes y sistemas de prueba de la resistencia. Además se incluyen datos estadísticos para demostrar la importancia del Cultivo en el país. Se indican los métodos seguidos en Colombia para el mejoramiento, partiendo especialmente de líneas de la especie silvestre. S. demíssumcombinándola con las variedades nativas cultivadas del tipo andigenumadaptadas a grandes alturas y a los días cortos de los trópicos. Los resultados hasta la fecha indican la posibilidad de obtener después de 3 ó4 generaciones de retrocruzamientos, una buena variedad para cultivo y altamente resistente a la enfermedad. También se aconseja el empleo de líneas y variedades extranjeras resistentes, una vez que se hayan probado a las razas de Phytophthorapropias de Colombia. . Se indica que ya existe material de fitomejoramiento bastante avanzado que es prácticamente inmune pero que requiere subsiguiente mejoramiento. Hay probabilidades así, de obtener variedades inmunes o altamente resistentes a las razas actualmente existentes aunque su identidad parece no corresponder exactamente con las de otros países como Holanda, Inglaterra y Estados Unidos. Se establece una falta de identidad entre las pruebas de campo y las del laboratorio aunque pueden complementarse. Puede suponerse, de acuerdo con las reacciones obtenidas en el material extranjero resistente, la posibilidad de existencia de varias razas, pero no tan virulentas como en los países que tienen variedades resistentes. Es aconsejable el mejoramiento permanente de las variedades, para poder combatir los nuevos biotipos del patógeno que se formen.

This paper presents problems and opportunities of ecological agriculture in Aragón, Spain. With this aim ecological and conventional agricultures are compared as regards their socioeconomic as well as their environmental aspects. As a basis for this comparison, some basic fundaments of ecological agriculture are presented, as well as its accounting cost structure (obtained through field work in Aragón and official databases, as well as data about its consume and distribution; finally, some public action ways are suggested in order to support ecological agriculture opportunities.El trabajo presenta los problemas y oportunidades de la agricultura ecológica en Aragón, España. Con esta finalidad, se compara la agricultura ecológica con la convencional tanto en los aspectos socioeconómicos como medioambientales. Como base de esta comparativa, se presentan algunos de los principios básicos de la agricultura ecológica y su estructura contable de costes, obtenida a través de un trabajo de campo en Aragón y bases de datos oficiales, así como datos sobre su consumo y distribución; finalmente se sugieren algunas vías de actuación pública que pueden apoyar las oportunidades de la agricultura ecológica.

De acuerdo con las estrategias internacionales en materia de salud y medio ambiente, los Ministerios de Sanidad y de Medio Ambiente pusieron en marcha en 2007 los mecanismos necesarios para la elaboración del Plan Nacional de Salud y Medio Ambiente. El primer paso ha sido la firma de un acuerdo de encomienda de gestión con el Instituto de Salud Carlos III para que éste diseñara las bases sobre las que sustentar el plan. El comité científico creado al efecto ha redactado un informe de bases para lo que ha contado con el concurso de un nutrido grupo de expertos. Las propuestas que se recogen en el informe constituyen el contenido del presente trabajo. Las propuestas hacen referencia a los ítems considerados prioritarios en la Estrategia Europea de Medio Ambiente y Salud, es decir, cáncer, alteraciones endocrinas, trastornos del desarrollo neurológico y enfermedades respiratorias, y se organizan en torno a los principales factores de riesgo ambiental para la salud: agua, compuestos químicos tóxicos persistentes, campos electromagnéticos, radicaciones ionizantes, ruido y cambio climático y temperaturas extremas. Para dar consistencia al plan se señalan algunas medidas imprescindibles que aseguren su viabilidad administrativa, política, técnica y financiera. Para darle coherencia, se arbitran unas líneas prioritarias comunes y unas estrategias metodológicas compatibles. Para darle forma, se señalan los programas nacionales que deberán implementarse y que deberán basarse en esa consistencia y coherencia. Más que entrar a concretar lo que se debe hacer —materia propia del futuro plan—, el informe señala cómo se debe hacer para lograr resultados exitosos.

Se presenta la caracterización palinológica de 223 especies, de 171 géneros y 73 familiascorrespondientes al 90% del total de especies registradas (254) en ambientes acuáticos,de pantano y de la llanura aluvial de los complejos cenagosos de los departamentos deCórdoba y Cesar, de la región Caribe de Colombia. Las características morfológicasque predominan son aberturas colporadas, exina tectada y patrón de la estructurareticulada. Según la ecología/zonación de la vegetación, en ambientes de pantano yen el espejo de agua (cubeta) dominan familias con espectro estenopalinológico comoCyperaceae con granos inaberturados o pseudoaberturados, escabrados y tectados yPoaceae con granos monoporados, psilados, escabrados, psilado-escabrados y tectados.En la llanura aluvial son mas frecuentes familias euripalinológicas como Apocynaceaecon granos estefanoporados o tricolporados, psilados, granulados, psilado-estriados opsilado-escabrados y tectados y Polygonaceae con granos periporados o tricolporados,reticulados, rugulados o granulados, semitectados a tectados. En las formacionesboscosas de la ribera y de la llanura de inundación, dominan familias como Fabaceaecon granos tricolporados, psilados, escabrados y tectados y Rubiaceae con granosinaberturados, diporados o triporados, tricolpados o tricolporados, escabrados oreticulados, tectados o semitectados.

Glutathione peroxidases (GPX), a family of antioxidant selenoenzymes, functionally link selenium and glutathione, which both show correlations with clinical outcomes in COVID-19. Thus, it is highly significant that cytosolic GPX1 has been shown to interact with an inactive C145A mutant of Mpro, the main cysteine protease of SARS-CoV-2, but not with catalytically active wild-type Mpro. This seemingly anomalous result is what might be expected if GPX1 is a substrate for the active protease, leading to its fragmentation. We show that the GPX1 active site sequence is substantially similar to a known Mpro cleavage site, and is identified as a potential cysteine protease site by the Procleave algorithm. Proteolytic knockdown of GPX1 is highly consistent with previously documented effects of recombinant SARS-CoV Mpro in transfected cells, including increased reactive oxygen species and NF-κB activation. Because NF-κB in turn activates many pro-inflammatory cytokines, this mechanism could contribute to increased inflammation and cytokine storms observed in COVID-19. Using web-based protease cleavage site prediction tools, we show that Mpro may be targeting not only GPX1, but several other selenoproteins including SELENOF and thioredoxin reductase 1, as well as glutamate-cysteine ligase, the rate-limiting enzyme for glutathione synthesis. This hypothesized proteolytic knockdown of components of both the thioredoxin and glutaredoxin systems is consistent with a viral strategy to inhibit DNA synthesis, to increase the pool of ribonucleotides for RNA synthesis, thereby enhancing virion production. The resulting “collateral damage” of increased oxidative stress and inflammation would be exacerbated by dietary deficiencies of selenium and glutathione precursors.
