Willd.) is a legume well adapted to cultivation in marginal areas, being an important source of protein for animal feed in low input cropping systems. Surprisingly, it is an underutilized crop as it could be a good alternative to increase the sustainability of extensive rainfed cropping systems. In Mediterranean rainfed cropping systems, the productivity of bitter vetch is severely reduced by the parasitic weed species Orobanche crenata (Forsk). To date, few resistant bitter vetch genotypes have been identified. O. crenata infection process initiates with the recognition of germination factors exuded by roots of susceptible hosts. In this work, the interaction of a collection of bitter vetch accessions and O. crenata has been analyzed in order to discover accessions with low germination induction activity. Through a combination of field and rhizotron experiments, two bitter vetch accessions were selected showing low germination-induction activity, which resulted in less infection. In addition, in vitro germination assays revealed that the low germination activity was due to low exudation of germination factors and not due to the exudation of germination inhibitors. The selected low germination-inducers genotypes could be the basis for a new breeding program generating locally adapted alternatives with resistance to O. crenata. Para ello se emplearon técnicas de análisis de percepción remota (PR), con enfoque paramétrico sobre Sistemas de Información Geográfica (GIS), clasificación interpretativa de tierras y conocimiento local. En la zona de estudio se presentan dos componentes agroforestales: bosque mesófilo de montaña (BMM) (27%) y potreros (Po) (16%) y tres subcomponentes: policultivo tradicional (Pt) y comercial (Pc) (36%), monocultivo especializado (Me) (3%) y zonas urbanas (Zu) (2.9%), identificados a través de su brillantez y textura en una imagen de satélite; sin embargo, hay confusión entre la vegetación nativa y comercial. Con la participación de los productores, estos componentes se identificaron con una precisión de 78.9% (Pc), 87.5% (Pt) y 100% (BMM, Pot, Me). La zona de mayor aptitud para la producción de café se localiza en la zona centro (23%); mientras que los de baja calidad en el centro y noreste (45.5%) del municipio. Los BMM ocurren en áreas no aptas para la producción de cultivo de café. ICTs were crucial to keep the students in educational programs during the outbreak; however, some students were left out, increasing socioeconomic differences, and many teachers needed the training to provide online lectures effectively. Despite those barriers, the current context could be an opportunity to invest in new teaching and learning practices. The main goal of this research is to analyze how teachers and students from veterinary programs in Portugal adapted to the digital environment, and perceive whether this change imposed by COVID-19 could provide teachers and higher institutions with new solutions to implement effective student-centered and ICT-enabled learning models. Results show that veterinary programs are based on student-centered practices by nature, but that the use of ICTs is still incipient. Teachers, students, and members from the Professional Order claim that the worst change brought by COVID-19 was the cancellation of hands-on sessions, impoverishing the students’ education during the time of mandatory confinement. In an attempt to unravel the faba bean – A. fabae interaction, we performed genome-wide transcriptome profiling by deepSuperSAGE that quantified the early transcriptional changes elicited by the fungus in the resistant 29H faba bean genotype. The total number of 26 bp tags obtained was 1,313,009, of which 51,484 were unique sequences (UniTags) and 161 of them corresponded to fungal sequences. Sequences with a full match of the 26 bp revealed 2,222 tags with a significant P-value that were expressed differentialy between inoculated and control leaves. After gene ontology (GO) annotation, 2,143 of these matched to databases sequences (approximately 1/3 into each GO domain). At a 2.7-fold change threshold, 1,197 sequences were significantly differentially expressed in infected as compared to control leaves. Of these, nearly half were up- and the other downregulated. The most enriched GO terms corresponded to tags related with photosynthesis metabolism or structural components. Ten of them can be associated with plant defense, due to their association with responses to the jasmonic acid pathway, pectin esterase activity or gene silencing. Validation of the SuperSAGE data by qPCR of ten differentially expressed UniTags confirmed a rapid increase or decrease in mRNA 8 to 12 hours after inoculation in most of the up-regulated tags and, less consistently, in the downregulated ones. This study represents the most comprehensive analysis of the Ascochyta-response transcriptome of faba bean available to date. The applicability of these tags will increase as more faba bean genomic and cDNA sequences become available.
