Bruzzone Description An account of the resource In the quest to understand how biotic interactions respond to climate change, one area that remains poorly explored is how interactions involving organisms other than vascular plants will respond. However the interactions between plants and biological soil crusts (BSCs) are relevant in many ecosystems and they will likely respond uniquely to climate change. Simultaneous considerations of both plant–plant and plant–BSC interactions may substantially improve our understanding of this topic. The aim of this study is to assess whether water availability differentially affects the biotic effects of BSCs and pioneer shrubs on the early life-history stage of tree seedling growth. We conducted a greenhouse factorial experiment with soil surface cover (bare soil, soil covered by a creeping shrub and BSC covered soil) and water regime (control and drought) as factors. We monitored Nothofagus pumilio (a native tree species of ecological and economic relevance) seedling water status and growth as well as changes in soil water content and soil properties. The shrub cover had a positive effect on soil water conservation and on the water balance of seedlings under water stress. However, its effect was negative for seedling growth under both water conditions. The BSC also contributed to soil water conservation and apparently added nutrients to the soil. The net effect of the BSC on seedling growth was negative under full-watering conditions but positive under water stress conditions. This result highlights how the studied biotic interactions, and especially interactions involving BSCs, depend on changes in water availability. Entre los resultados mas sobresalientes, se encontró que: a) la población de lapa roja se extiende en toda la Península de Osa y hacia el norte hasta Playa Piñuelas; b) no fue posible estimar el número de individuos en la población, pero puede existir entre 800-1200 individuos y los habitantes locales consideran que esta aumentando; c) las lapas no se concentran en sitios para pernoctar; d) se alimentan de al menos 59 especies de plantas (semilla y fruta) de las cuales tres especies exóticas se consideran importantes: el almendro de playa (Terminalia catappa), la teca (Tectona grandis) y la melina (Gmelina arborea); e) anidan entre diciembre y mayo en huecos de árboles de unas 28 especies, siendo la ceiba (Ceiba pentandra) y el ajo (Caryocar costarricense) las más utilizadas; f ) existe extracción de pichones (aprox. 25-50 por año) por parte de laperos, siendo una persona la principal responsable de dicha extracción ya que colecta al menos 25 pichones anualmente; g) existen tres programas de liberación de lapas rojas, los cuales se encuentran ubicados en el área de Golfito y Pavones y h) el plan estratégico formulado contempla proyectos de investigación, monitoreo, conservación, extensión y mercadeo de la especie; lo anterior incluye estudios sobre dinámica poblacional, hábitat, ecología de reproducción, genética, extracción de pichones y programas de conservación. La marta Martes martes se define comúnmente como un depredador generalista oportunista, porque su dieta en Europa incluye mamíferos, frutas, aves y invertebrados. A partir del análisis de las heces, hemos descrito los hábitos alimenticios en primavera y la amplitud del nicho trófico de la marta en ambiente mediterráneo en Cerdeña (Italia central). Los pequeños mamíferos (sobre todo Apodemus sylvaticus, Mus musculus y Eliomys quercinus) representan la fuente más importante de alimentación de la marta, ya que constituyen aproximadamente el 52% del volumen medio. Otra fuente importante de alimentos secundarios la constituyen los invertebrados (especialmente escarabajos y larvas de insectos) y las aves (paseriformes casi exclusivamente), mientras que los grandes mamíferos, los lagomorfos, los reptiles y las frutas están poco representados en la dieta. La composición de la dieta y el valor del índice de Levins indican que la marta en Cerdeña es un depredador especialista facultativo, con una especialización en la depredación de los micromamíferos. El análisis se hizo a través de la información derivada de un Software de simulación del ciclo de vida de productos (GaBi®), usando particularmente la metodología llamada Evaluación por Ciclo de Vida (ECV) que se enfoca principalmente en evaluar los impactos ambientales asociados a un producto a través de toda su vida útil, en concordancia con la norma técnica internacional ISO 14040 (referente a la metodología de Análisis por Ciclo de Vida). Los resultados muestran que el consumo eléctrico de la incandescente fue de 5.55 veces más que la luminaria fluorescente y 8.10 veces más que la de LED; la producción, uso y disposición final de la luminaria incandescente (49,334.4 CO2e) en el ejemplo del presente estudio, contribuye al calentamiento global 29.87 veces más que la fluorescente (1,651.2 Kg. CO2e) y 146.82 veces más que la de LED (336 Kg. CO2e). Se concluye que la luminaria LED es la mejor opción tomando en consideración todo el ciclo de vida completo del producto incluyendo el costo. Por otro lado, si solamente se valorara la fase de producción, la mejor opción sería la incandescente, pero por supuesto que sería un parámetro muy limitado porque se deben tomar en cuenta todas las fases del ciclo de vida incluyendo el análisis de costo por cada fase (de producción; de uso y mantenimiento y de fin de vida útil y disposición final). Respecto a la luminaria fluorescente podría ser la mejor opción ya que existe una amplia gama de productos en donde varian significativamente los precios y podría ser una buena opción durante la selección adecuada de equipos ahorradores en iluminación. Este artículo aborda la historia ambiental de Japón desde un enfoque comunicacional a partir del caso de estudio de las representaciones de la flor de cerezo (sakura). Considerada un símbolo de Japón, la sakura está asociada con la primavera en la “cultura de las cuatro estaciones”. En la contemporaneidad, el anuncio de su floración es motivo de coberturas mediáticas anuales debido a la costumbre extendida del Hanami (reunión de observación de la flor). Este estudio exploratorio aborda la serie periodística sobre los impactos del cambio climático en los patrones de floración de la sakura del diario Mainichi Shimbun (2016-2020). Constatamos que el porcentaje de publicaciones coincide con la estacionalidad de marzo y abril. La serie periodística se inaugura en la Sección Ciencia por la difusión de investigaciones en ciencias forestales. Luego se transpone como nuevo criterio de noticiabilidad a otras secciones generalistas, como la Local. Así, la noticia de la alteración en los tiempos de la floración de la sakura puede manifestar un indicio concreto del cambio climático en la vida cotidiana de la sociedad japonesa. En este estudio se investigó la relación entre variables socio-demográficas y el nivel de conciencia ambiental en dos ciudades del sur de Brasil (Maringá y Sarandí). Los resultados mostraron que el nivel de educación y el de ingresos se relacionaron de forma positiva con la conciencia ambiental. Los individuos con mayor nivel de educación poseen 3.2 veces más probabilidades de tener una buena conciencia ambiental que los que presentan una menor escolaridad. Estos resultados mejoran nuestra comprensión sobre las interacciones socio-ecológicas de los ciudadanos de esta región del país y pueden brindar soporte a medidas de gestión para involucrar a los residentes en acciones de conservación del ambiente.
