We tested the role of dietary shifts (from rodents to fruits and to mixed diets) on the nutritional ecology of the culpeo fox Pseudalopex culpaeus, a native canid of South America. We studied the effects of food quality on digestive processes, nutrition, and mass balance, and the implications of diet quality for fox survival. We observed at the end of the nutritional trials that body mass differed significantly between the three diet groups (fruits, rats and mixed diets), while percentage of body mass change differed significantly only in the fruit diet treatment. Foxes fed with fruits consumed more food to meet their dietary and metabolic needs. Across diets, dry-matter as well as energy digestibility increased significantly with diet quality. Also, mean retention time was negatively and significantly correlated with dry-matter intake. We put forth that mixed diet may yield higher assimilation efficiencies and hence higher nutrient intakes than those predicted from the ingestion and assimilation of pure diets (i.e,. only rats, only fruits). We hypothesize that during periods of low availability of mammalian prey, a mixed diet should yield a positive energy/mass balance for the fox. We conclude that temporal and spatial variation in nutrient, energy, and water contents of prey available in a given habitat could have an important effect on fox nutrition, energy use, and mass balance. Finally, we postulate that P. culpaeus could not survive on fruits only past seven daysSometimos a prueba el papel del cambio de dieta (desde roedores a frutos y dieta mixta) sobre la ecología nutricional del zorro culpeo Pseudalopex culpaeus, especie nativa de Sudamérica. Estudiamos el efecto de la calidad del alimento sobre los procesos digestivos, nutrición, balance de masas y las implicancias de la calidad de la dieta sobre la sobrevivencia de los zorros. La masa corporal al final de los ensayos nutricionales difirió significativamente entre los tres grupos de dietas (frutos, ratas y dieta mixta), en tanto que el porcentaje de cambio en masa corporal solo fue significativo en el caso de la dieta de frutos. Los zorros alimentados con frutos consumieron más alimento para satisfacer sus necesidades dietarias y metabólicas. Tanto la ingesta de materia seca como la digestibilidad se incrementaron significativamente con la calidad de la dieta. Más aún, el tiempo de retención promedio estuvo negativa y significativamente correlacionado con la ingesta de materia seca. Pensamos que la dieta mixta puede entregar mayores eficiencias de asimilación y por lo tanto mayores ingestas de nutrientes que lo predicho por la ingesta y asimilación de dietas puras (i.e., solo ratas, solo frutos). Proponemos la hipótesis que durante períodos de baja disponibilidad de presas (micromamíferos) una ingesta de dieta mixta podría entregar un balance energía/masa positivo para los zorros. Concluímos que la variación temporal y espacial de nutrientes, energía y contenido de agua presente en las presas disponibles en un determinado hábitat puede tener un importante efecto sobre la nutrición, uso de energía y balance de masa de los zorros. Documentamos la dieta del jabalí silvestre en el centro-sur de Chile basados en el examen de 20 estómagos colectados en los faldeos de volcán Mocho-Choshuenco (39°54' S, 72°02' O) y en el Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales (41°03' S, 71°54' O). La dieta está representada por animales, vegetales y hongos. Entre los vegetales y hongos son consumidas tanto las partes epígeas como hipógeas, lo mismo que frutos y semillas. Hongos y rizomas de Gunnera tinctoria constituyen ítemes vegetales cuantitativamente importantes en la alimentación. El jabalí forrajea en general en ambiente boscoso, pero las especies vegetales más frecuentes en la dieta se encuentran en espacios abiertos o fuera del bosque. El ambiente dominado por Chusquea spp. constituye un importante sitio de alimentación. Los roedores de la familia Muridae dominan entre los animales determinados en la dieta del jabalí. Esta situación, sin embargo, parece obedecer a la ocurrencia de una ratada producto de la semillación masiva de Chusquea spp. durante la época de muestreo. Las aves de la familia Rhinocryptidae e invertebrados (en especial larvas del coleóptero Chiasognathus grantii) constituyen parte frecuente de los ítemes animales de la dieta del jabalí. En comparación a estudios en otras partes del mundo, el jabalí silvestre en Chile consume hongos en porcentaje de ocurrencia similar (65 %) a su dieta en Estados Unidos de América pero bastante más alta que su dieta en Europa (5-32 %). En relación al volumen del componente animal, el jabalí en Chile consume más (16,1 %) que en Estados Unidos de América (6 %) y que en Europa (7-13 %)We document the diet of wild boar in south-central Chile based on analysis of 20 stomachs collected on the outskirts of Mocho-Choshuenco volcano (39°54' S, 72°02' W) and of Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park (41°03' S, 71°54' W). The diet incorporates animals, plants and fungi. Among the latter two, both epigeal and hypogeal parts are consumed, together with fruits and seeds. Fungi and rhizomes of Gunnera tinctoria are the most abundant plant items in the diet. The wild boar in Chile forages chiefly in forested environments, but nonetheless the most frequent plant items in its diet are found in open spaces or outside the forest. Environments dominated by bamboos Chusquea spp. constitute important foraging sites. Rodents in the family Muridae prevail among animal items in the wild boar diet. This situation, however, is associated to the occurrence of a mouse outbreak (ratada) resulting from the mast seeding of Chusquea spp. during our study. Birds in the family Rhinocryptidae together with invertebrates (specially Coleopteran larvae of Chiasognathus grantii) made up a sizeable part of the animals in the wild boar diet. In comparison to elsewhere, the wild boar in Chile consumes fungi in a similar percentage of occurence (65 %) as in the United States of America but much higher than in Europe (5-32 %). With regard to the animal component, the wild boar in Chile consumes more (20 % volume) of such items than in the United States of America (6 %) and in Europe (7-13 %)

A partir de la revisión de la sección zoológica de la Historia Física y Política de Chile elaborada por Claude Gay, analizamos su contribución al conocimiento de los vertebrados chilenos. Esta sección incluyó la descripción de 483 especies distribuidas en 68 mamíferos, 259 aves, 31 reptiles, 16 anfibios y 109 peces; de ellas, 50 especies fueron descritas por primera vez para la ciencia, pero los análisis taxonómicos posteriores sinonimizaron cerca del 58 % de ellas, quedando como válidas solo 21 especies. Este valor implica que el 1.1 % de la fauna de vertebrados de Chile actualmente conocida (unas 1900 especies) fue descrita por primera vez en dicha obra monumental.By reviewing the zoological section of the Historia Física y Política de Chile written by Claude Gay, we analyze his contributions to the understanding of the Chilean vertebrates, which included 483 species: 68 mammals, 259 birds, 31 reptiles, 16 amphibians, and 109 fishes. Gay documented 50 species as new taxa to science, but subsequent taxonomic analyses sinonimized 58 % of those species; thus currently only 21 species are recognized as valid. This means that 1.1 % of the Chilean vertebrates currently recognized were described in this monumental publication.

Los eventos climáticos extremos pueden incrementar la ocurrencia del dengue y de enfermedades diarreicas agudas, en áreas altamente sensibles, con poco nivel de adaptación a condiciones cambiantes, bajo el escenario del cambio climático. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir la tendencia espacial y temporal de los eventos extremos de temperatura y de precipitación en el valle geográfico del río Cauca. Se controló la calidad y la homogenización de los datos climáticos. Se desarrolló un análisis robusto no paramétrico de tendencia de eventos climáticos extremos para precipitación y temperatura. Se analizaron 24 estaciones climatológicas en el Valle geográfico del río Cauca. El análisis regional para precipitación y temperatura mostró una tendencia al incremento de los índices de eventos extremos y el análisis local identificó una distribución no homogénea, en el área de estudio. Los resultados se discutieron en virtud de los posibles impactos en salud, específicamente, para dengue y enfermedad diarreica aguda. El aumento de los días lluviosos y de la cantidad de precipitación podrían generar un aumento en la densidad vectorial y la longevidad larval de Aedes aegypti, además causar el desbordamiento de ríos y canales, con combinación de aguas servidas y resuspensión de sólidos, produciendo el aumento de microorganismos patógenos en el agua de consumo. Adicionalmente, la tendencia al incremento de la temperatura podría acortar el ciclo de vida del Aedes y la replicación interna del virus con mayor probabilidad de transmisión del dengue, al mismo tiempo, que aumentaría la sobrevida de bacterias y de protozoos en aguas negras, superficiales y suelo, aumentando la ocurrencia de las EDA.

Los ácidos orgánicos, principalmente el ácido cítrico, pueden mejorar la disponibilidad de nutrimentos para las plantas, de igual manera mejoran la calidad de la planta y del fruto. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el efecto de la adición de ácido cítrico (AC), aplicado en la solución nutritiva, sobre el impacto en el crecimiento, producción y calidad de fruta de tomate en un suelo calcáreo. La adición del AC propició modificaciones positivas en el diámetro del tallo, el peso fresco y biomasa seca de la planta. Respecto al testigo la producción de fruto aumentó en 69% con el tratamiento 10-6 M de ácido cítrico. El potencial antioxidante, la conductividad eléctrica, la acidez titulable y la vitamina C en el fruto respondieron también favorablemente a la adición de ácido cítrico en la concentración de 10-6 y 10-4. M. Los resultados del estudio indicaron que es factible utilizar el AC como una herramienta de manejo agronómico para mejorar la nutrición de los cultivos.

While the detrimental effects of a chronic positive energy balance due to a sedentary lifestyle have been well established, the impacts of a short period of abruptly reduced physical activity and overeating arising from strict confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic will soon start to emerge. To reasonably anticipate major consequences according to the available evidence, we hereby review the literature for studies that have explored the health impacts of several weeks of a reduction in physical activity and daily step-count combined with modified eating habits. These studies identify as main metabolic consequences increases in insulin resistance, total body fat, abdominal fat and inflammatory cytokines. All these factors have been strongly associated with the development of metabolic syndrome, which in turn increases the risk of multiple chronic diseases. A plausible mechanism involved in these impacts could be a positive energy balance promoted by maintaining usual dietary intake while reducing energy expenditure. This means that just as calorie intake restriction could help mitigate the deleterious impacts of a bout of physical inactivity, overeating under conditions of home confinement is very likely to exacerbate these consequences. Moreover, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease have been identified as potential risk factors for more severely ill patients with COVID-19. Thus, adequate control of metabolic disorders could be important to reduce the risk of severe COVID-19.

Entre los impactos negativos sobre la biodiversidad que causan las obras viales, como las carreteras, se tiene la mortandad de fauna por atropello. En el presente estudio se determina la mortandad de anfibios, reptiles, aves y mamíferos por atropello, en tres carreteras que confluyen en el distrito de Tambogrande (Piura en el norte de Perú) y establecer los sitios de mayor incidencia. Los datos se colectaron entre enero y junio de 2018 en 24 recorridos una vez por semana entre las 7:00 y 14:00 horas. Los recorridos se realizaron sobre una moto lineal a 25 km/h, los datos registrados fueron coordenadas geográficas del punto de atropello principalmente. La mortandad de vertebrados en los transectos se analizó usando el Índice Kilométrico de Abundancia. Los sitios de alta incidencia de atropellos se determinaron con un análisis de densidad de Kernel. Se hallaron 437 animales atropellados pertenecientes a 29 especies. Los animales atropellados más abundantes fueron los mamíferos seguidos de aves, reptiles y anfibios. El IKA promedio fue de 0.2 (IC 95% 0.1 – 0.3) N° de atropellos/Km. Se presentaron 24 puntos de alta incidencia en el área de estudio cercanos entre sí. Utilizando la información de este trabajo se sugiere construir ocho pasos de fauna para vertebrados según estándares internacionales y complementados con señalética adecuada.

Um dos desafios enfrentados pelos agricultores familiares é a comercialização da produção, dificuldade essa reduzida com a inserção dos agricultores no PAA. Este estudo buscar investigar a realidade atual da agricultura familiar e do PAA no Estado de Mato Grosso; comparar os resultados produtivos, número de municípios e produtores beneficiados ao longo de 2003 a 2013 nas modalidades do programa e com ambos os recursos do MDS e MDA; os benefícios e as dificuldades no acesso ao programa. Para a realização do trabalho adotou-se o levantamento bibliográfico e dados disponibilidades pela CONAB. Os resultados apontam que o PAA no estado de Mato Grosso atingiu maior número de agricultores nos anos de 2010-2012, garantindo a geração de renda familiar, organização (associações e cooperativas) entre os agricultores, fornecimento de alimentos e o desenvolvimento local.

O Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos (PAA) e o Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar (PNAE) são programas que integram política pública federal de segurança alimentar, nutricional e agrícola com implantação municipal. O PNAE, criado em 1955 com foco na alimentação de escolares, foi reformulado em 2009, instituindo utilização de recursos do Fundo Nacional de Desenvolvimento da Educação na compra direta da agricultura familiar. O PAA foi criado em 2003, com funções de política agrícola e de política de segurança alimentar e nutricional. Nesse contexto, este artigo tem por objetivo caracterizar a percepção de atores sociais de três grupos – gestores, produtores e entidades beneficiárias participantes do PAA e do PNAE, implantados em município do estado de São Paulo. Foi utilizada a metodologia do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC) para levantamento, organização e tabulação de dados qualitativos de natureza verbal, obtidos por entrevistas. Foram registrados juízos e opiniões, por parte dos stakeholders, expressando conhecimento e interesses diferentes, de acordo com sua posição nos programas. A metodologia adotada viabilizou a identificação de críticas e sugestões, resultado nem sempre obtido por investigações que solicitam respostas diretas dos atores. Pôde ser detectada a necessidade de ações para melhor atuação dos programas e desempenho dos atores.
