WHO's action on protecting and promoting the health of workers is mandated by the Constitution of the Organization and a number of resolutions of the World Health Assembly. Recognizing that occupational health is closely linked to public health and health systems development, WHO is addressing all determinants of workers' health, including risks for disease and injury in the occupational environment, social and individual factors, and access to health services. Furthermore, the workplace is being used as a setting for protecting and promoting the health of workers and their families. Concerned that despite the existence of effective interventions to prevent occupational diseases and injuries there are still major gaps in the health status of workers between and within countries, the 60th World Health Assembly in 2007 endorsed the Global Plan of Action on Workers' Health. This Plan provides a political framework for development of policies, infrastructure, technologies and partnerships for achieving a basic level of health protection in all workplaces throughout the world. The Health Assembly also urged the 193 Member States of WHO to develop national plans and strategies for implementing the Global Plan of Action and to work towards full coverage of all workers with essential interventions and basic services for prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. A large network of 65 collaborating centres provides support to WHO's action on workers' health. The priorities for global action in the coming ten years include policy instruments on workers' health, workplace health protection and promotion, occupational health services, evidence for action and practice, and workers' health in other policies. Thus, WHO action on workers' health contributes to the global health agenda with regards to health security, climate change and Millenium Development Goals.Las acciones de protección y promoción de la salud de los trabajadores se corresponde con uno de los mandato contemplados dentro de la Constitución de la Organización y contemplado en diferentes resoluciones de la Asamblea Mundial de la Salud. Teniendo en cuenta que la salud ocupacional se encuentra fuertemente relacionada con la salud pública y los programas de salud para el desarrollo, la OMS se encuentra organizando los determinantes de la salud en los trabajadores, incluyendo los riesgos para la enfermedad y los accidentes en el ámbito laboral, social e individual, así como el acceso a los servicios de salud. Además de priorizar las acciones enfocadas a considerar el lugar de trabajo como un espacio donde se debe proteger y promover la salud de los trabajadores y sus familiares. Pese a los esfuerzos por implantar intervenciones efectivas orientadas hacia la prevención de las enfermedades ocupacionales y los accidentes laborales, todavía existen importantes diferencias entre los estatus de salud de los trabajadores entre y dentro de diferentes países, así, la 60 Asamblea Mundial de la Salud, celebrada en 2007, incluye un Plan Global de Acción sobre la Salud de los Trabajadores. Este Plan contempla programas orientados a desarrollar políticas, infraestructuras, tecnologías y trabajos conjuntos para alcanzar un nivel de protección básico de la salud en todos los trabajadores del mundo. La Asamblea Mundial de la Salud también instó a los 193 Estados Miembros de la OMS, a que desarrollen programas nacionales y las estrategias necesarias para facilitar la implantación del Plan Global de Acción y a trabajar en el sentido de su difusión para que logre alcanzar a todos los trabajadores, mediante intervenciones oportunas y servicios básicos orientados hacia la prevención de las enfermedades profesionales y de los accidentes laborales. Para ello cuenta con una extensa red compuesta por 65 centros colaboradores que dan soporte a las acciones de la OMS en materia de Salud Laboral. Las prioridades en el marco de acciones de salud global para los siguientes diez años incluyen instrumentos relacionados con políticas en salud de los trabajadores, protección y promoción de la salud en los puestos de trabajo, servicios de salud laboral, desarrollo e implantación de prácticas basadas en la evidencia científica y otras políticas de salud concernientes a los trabajadores. De esta forma, las acciones de la OMS sobre la salud de los trabajadores contribuyen en gran medida a desarrollar la agenda de salud global orientada hacia la seguridad en salud, cambios climáticos y los Objetivos para el Desarrollo del Milenio.

Determinar hasta qué punto el norte de África es empleado como zona de ganancia de reservas por las aves transaharianas es importante no sólo ecológicamente, sino también desde el punto de vista de la conservación. En este trabajo se estudia la relación de capturas, cantidad de reservas y tasa de ganancia de peso de varias especies de paseriformes transaharianos capturadas durante el periodo de paso prenupcial en Zouala, un palmeral en el sureste de Marruecos, localizado a unos 100 km al norte del borde del Sáhara. El objetivo es contribuir al conocimiento del uso que los paseriformes hacen de los oasis del norte de África durante el periodo migratorio primaveral. En conjunto se capturaron 46 especies de aves, siendo 38 paseriformes. De ellas, 23 fueron especies europeas transaharianas, presentes en el área sólo en paso migratorio. Se obtuvieron un total de 820 capturas, de las que un 96% fueron paseriformes y un 62% especies transaharianas. En consecuencia, la comunidad de aves paseriformes en la zona durante el periodo de estudio está notablemente influenciada por las especies europeas en paso migratorio. El 30% de las capturas del conjunto de especies transaharianas estuvo monopolizado por una sola especie el zarcero pálido occidental Iduna opaca (Cabanis, 1850). La cantidad de reservas es globalmente baja, inferior a lo registrado tanto en el norte de Marruecos como, incluso, en las islas del Mediterráneo occidental. Las especies con menos grasa fueron las que se reproducen más al sur, en la Europa mediterránea y el norte de África. El peso de las aves que se capturaron tras el amanecer fue más bajo que el de las aves capturadas hacia el ocaso, lo cual apoyaría la idea de que las aves acumularon peso durante este periodo, probablemente como reservas. Este supuesto incremento diario de peso no se constató al analizar la tasa de ganancia diaria de peso en aves recapturadas dentro del mismo día, probablemente debido al reducido tamaño muestral. Igualmente, tampoco se observó (excepto en el caso del colirrojo real Phoenicurus phoenicurus (Linnaeus, 1758)) un incremento de peso durante el periodo de estancia en aquellos individuos para los que se obtuvieron recapturas durante el periodo de estudio. Nuevamente, el tamaño muestral en este caso fue muy bajo, lo cual impide conclusiones firmes al respecto para la mayor parte de las especies

Objetivo: Indagar a) si existen diferencias en las condiciones de vida estimadas a partir de variables socio-económicas, entre familias con niños de 3 a 6 años de edad, residentes en zonas urbana, periurbana y rural del departamento de Villaguay, Entre Ríos, Argentina; y b) en caso de haberlas, si esas diferencias se expresan en el estado nutricional infantil y en la percepción de inseguridad alimentaria en los hogares (PIAH) (en lo que respecta al acceso). Población y Métodos: El estudio fue de tipo transversal e incluyó 303 niños de 3 a 6 años de edad. Para el estudio antropométrico se tomaron peso corporal y estatura, y se empleó la referencia The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (Frisancho, 2008) para determinar los indicadores de estado nutricional. La información socio-económica se relevó mediante una encuesta semiestructurada, mientras que la PIAH se obtuvo a partir de la encuesta propuesta por la Academia para el Desarrollo Educativo. Ambas encuestas fueron completadas por los padres de los niños medidos antropométricamente. Resultados y Conclusiones. En general se observó que las poblaciones estudiadas presentaron diferencias socioeconómicas en relación con el nivel educativo y empleo paterno y materno, hacinamiento crítico, cobertura de salud, entre otras; estas diferencias se expresarían en la distribución diferencial de la malnutrición infantil y de la percepción de las limitaciones que los padres manifestaron tener a una buena alimentación tanto en términos de cantidad como de calidad.

We report on the presence of Bothrops venezuelensis Leybold, 1873 in Norte de Santander and Boyacá departments, Colombia. These findings represent the first records for the country. Extending the species’ distribution 474 km in a straight-line distance SW from its nearest previously known Venezuelan locality. The present record adds a new clinically important species for Colombia, which needs to be considered in the production of anti-ophidic serum.

Diferentes investigadores en hidroclimatología aplican técnicas basadas en autovectores para comprimir grandes volúmenes de información mientras conservan la estructura invariante de los datos originales. La presente investigación desarrolló una metodología que aplica una de estas técnicas, Análisis de Componentes Principales, a los elementos de variabilidad en series de tiempo hidroclimáticas y luego se identifican grupos o clústers mediante el método “k-means”. El resultado es un mapa regionalizado por variable. Finalmente se hace la intersección de estos mapas y obteniéndose áreas que presentan una estructura hidroclimática homogénea debido que las variables comparten su estructura de varianza. En el caso de estudio se evaluaron 8 variables para Colombia (9268 series de tiempo), obteniendo como resultado 26 regiones hidroclimáticas. Obtener regiones hidroclimáticamente homogéneas brinda la posibilidad de generar, entre otros, proyectos de adaptación al cambio climático de forma localizada con el fin de dar soluciones cuasi particulares que maximicen los resultados.

El objetivo de este artículo es probar la hipótesis de la curva U invertida de Kuznets en la relación entre el consumo de agua per cápita para uso agrícola y ganadero, que representa en promedio 75% del consumo total, y el PIB per cápita para los municipios en la cuenca Lerma-Chapala. En el contexto de cambio climático, la relación entre consumo de agua y PIB es muy importante, pues la variabilidad en la disponibilidad del agua ha aumentado, forzando a los usuarios y gobiernos a considerar estrategias para su uso eficiente, en donde se incluyan los posibles impactos económicos y ambientales. Al llevar a cabo el análisis a nivel de una cuenca hidrográfica es necesario considerar los efectos espaciales entre municipios vecinos a través de la aplicación de modelos autorregresivos espaciales. Al incluir errores correlacionados espacialmente en los modelos de regresión, no se rechaza la hipótesis de la curva U invertida de Kuznets. Por tanto, cualquier estrategia de mitigación del cambio climático relacionada con el uso eficiente del agua debe ser evaluada en sus costos y beneficios en el PIB municipal en relación con la curva de Kuznets estimada en este artículo.

Os ecossistemas crescem e desenvolvem-se dentro das restrições termodinâmicas. Uma das formas de se medir o estágio de amadurecimento de um ecossistema é avaliar suas propriedades emergentes, que apesar de não realizarem trabalho no sentido físico, influenciam seu desenvolvimento. Essas propriedades podem ser quantificadas em funções-meta que servem como indicadoras da qualidade do ecossistema. Neste trabalho, são detalhadas, em vários aspectos, duas funções-meta: ascendência e “overhead”. Ambas são baseadas na Teoria de Informação, sendo que a primeira delas reflete o grau de ordem do sistema e a segunda o de desordem. Apesar dos sistemas tenderem à maior organização, um nível de desordem é imprescindível para manter essa mesma ordem. As funções são descritas matematicamente e, através de um exemplo hipotético, os seus cálculos são realizados de forma que possam ser refeitos por interessados no assunto.Ecosystems grow and develop subjected to thermodynamic constraints. Emergent properties can measure the ecosystem maturity. These properties do not do causal work but they influence the system development and they can be shown as goal functions that indicate the health of ecosystems. In this paper, two goal functions are detailed: ascendency and overhead. The origin of them is the Information Theory. Ascendency shows the degree of system order while overhead quantifies the disorder component. Although, systems tend to order increasing ascendency, a certain disorder degree is indispensable to sustain the order. Ascendency and overhead are described mathematically and the calculations are exemplified through a hypothetical ecosystem.

Las empresas de la agroindustria láctea se encuentran en el medio de fuerzas competitivas que afectan su estrategia y supervivencia. Por ende deben construir ventajas competitivas sostenibles que se conviertan en motor de crecimiento y desarrollo. Para tal fin, es necesario partir de una línea base que analice su presente y de esta forma permita definir las estrategias a seguir. El objetivo de esta investigación es evaluar el grado de competitividad de cinco empresas lecheras de Sincelejo por medio de un estudio de caso que aplicó un cuestionario inspirado en las áreas funcionales de la empresa. Éste indagó por elementos en las categorías: producción, mercadeo, finanzas, y administración-talento humano. Como resultado, se concluyó que el grado de competitividad de las empresas analizadas es bajo, donde los componentes de producción y administración-talento humano son de mejor comportamiento comparados con mercadeo y finanzas.
