The experiment was carried out in plastic pots in a glasshouse, in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. Two commercial Solanum gilo Raddi cultivars (Comprido Verde-Claro and Esmeralda) and two introduced by IAC (Bernacci and Cardoso) were evaluated as to their vegetative development and fruit yield. The transplantings were produced in polystyrene trays with 128 cells and the transplant was done 40 days after sowing when the plants had four or five true leaves. The number of leaves, the height, leaf area and the fresh and dry shoot weight were evaluated 30, 60 and 90 days after transplant. Weekly, after fruiting began, the fruits were picked and their diameter, length and fresh biomass were measured. 'Esmeralda' and 'Comprido Verde-Claro' showed premature fruit production when compared to Bernacci and Cardoso cultivars. The latter cultivars yielded fruits for longer period of time. Cardoso cultivar produced a bigger number and a larger total fresh fruit biomass than the other genotypes. Bernacci and Cardoso cultivars of IAC germoplasm collection showed to be genotypes with potential to be used in genetic improvement, in familiar agriculture and in the system of support production and they are the traditional ways of jilo cultivation.</text>

Organic agriculture in Brazil has been increasing about 30% per year over the last few years, since consumers are seeking for healthier foods, i.e. nutritious and free of pesticide residues. Among organically grown vegetable crops, tomato is an attractive economic opportunity for growers. However, the lack of information about management practices and adapted cultivars to organic production systems under protected cultivation are pointed out as important constraints that prevents this activity to expand. This work aimed at evaluating the performance of indeterminate tomato cultivars in organic management systems in unheated plastic greenhouse. In both experiments tomato plants were staked. Plant spacing was 1.5 m between rows and 0.35 m between plants. They were planted in double line and spaced 0.8 m between lines and 0.6 m between plants (about 20,000 plants ha-1). The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design, with four replications and eight treatments (cultivars: Avalon, Colibri, HTX-5415, HTX-8027, Sahel, San Marzano, San Vito, and Jane). Sahel hybrid exhibited an outstanding performance for marketable yield under organic cultivation. Tomato pinworm (Tuta absoluta) was a serious limiting pest for organically grown tomatoes, responding for 17% of damage in the fruits harvested from the evaluated cultivars.</text>

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of different substrates in the decomposition of broiler carcasses. Six containers of a compost maker were used each one measuring 0.80 m width, 1.20 m depth and 1.50 m height. The substrates were: pine aciculae, sugarcane bagasse, corn straw, peanut shells, grass and sawdust. The composting was accompanied by four periods. The pile of each container was made up of five layers, in which, five poultry carcasses were uniformly deposited in two layers. The tumbling of the piles was done every 10 days, with the purpose to provide aeration for the substrate and water was added to the same. After 30 days, the final tumbling was done. In the assembly piles and in the tumbling process the carcasses and the substrate were weighed separately. During the process, the monitored parameters were dry matter, ashes, phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, pH, organic carbon and C/N ratio. All substrates were efficient in the decomposition of the broiler carcasses and final physiochemical composition values are in agreement with values in IN-25/Mapa, in other words, all of the substrates can be used as simple organic fertilizers.</text>

Direct evapotranspiration measurements are important to the calibration of indirect methods. The performance of a low cost hydraulic weighing lysimeter was evaluated, aiming to estimate the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in a settlement area in the Semi Arid Brazilian northeast. The lysimeter presents a simplified design, with loading cells of butyl internally covered with nylon, connected to a manometric system with mercury and water. The lysimeter equilibrium was stable, with the largest positional average error of 3.93%. Calibrations produced correlation coefficients higher than 0.9993, and reading resolutions between 0.095 and 0.134 mm. Lysimeter readings were compared to ETo estimate Penman-Monteith, Blaney-Criddle FAO, Jensen-Haise, and Class A methods. Additionally, the performance of a simplified evaporimetric tank was evaluated, built with recycled material, which has been used for irrigation management in communal areas. All the considered methods produced good results, well correlated to the readings from the lysimeter, for the studied period.</text>

</text>
