With the purpose of investigating Leishmania vector species bothersome to humans the sandfly fauna was identified and some of its ecological aspects in the Santana nucleus, captures were undertaken monthly with automatic light traps in 11 ecotopes, including caves, forests, a camping site and domiciliary environments, and on black and white Shannon traps, from January/2001 to December/2002. A total of 2,449 sandflies representing 21 species were captured. The highest values of abundance obtained in the captures with automatic light traps were for Psathyromyia pascalei and Psychodopygus ayrozai. A total of 107 specimens representing 13 species were captured on black (12 species) and white (6 species) Shannon traps set simultaneously. Psychodopygus geniculatus females predominated on the black (43.75%), and Psathyromyia lanei and Ps. ayrozai equally (32.4%) on the white. Nyssomyia intermedia and Nyssomyia neivai, both implicated in the transmission of ACL in the Brazilian Southeastern region, were also captured. Ny. intermedia predominated in the open camping area. Low frequencies of phlebotomines were observed in the caves, where Evandromyia edwardsi predominated Lutzomyia longipalpis, the main vector of the American visceral leishmaniasis, was aslo present. Se observó una nula o baja abundancia de huevos y larvas de peces en las cercanías del glaciar, y la abundancia de huevos de M. parvipinnis estuvo relacionada positivamente con la temperatura y salinidad de la columna de agua y negativamente con la estabilidad de la columna de agua. Además, hubo una relación negativa entre la densidad del agua de mar y el diámetro de los huevos de S. fuegensis. La relación entre deshielo e ictioplancton podría tener consecuencias en el transporte advectivo y mortalidad masiva de huevos y larvas de peces y el acople pelágico-bentónico en la Patagonia austral de Chile. Como el cambio climático global ha incrementado los deshielos de glaciares en latitudes altas, y el aumento del ingreso de aguas de baja temperatura y salinidad podría tener consecuencias en el ictioplancton de la Patagonia chilena.In October-November 2009, an oceanographic survey was carried out between 50 and 53°S off southern Chile, near the Southern Ice Field. The stations near the glacier showed low temperatures (1-3°C) and salinity (< 25), and high stability (Brunt-Väisälä frequency N > 0.1 cycles s-1). Main ichthyoplankton taxa were eggs and larvae of southern sprat Sprattus fuegensis, lightfish Maurolicus parvipinnis, Macrouridae, and southern hake Merluccius australis. The main spawning area of S. fuegensis (~8000 eggs 10 m-2) occurred in mixed zones of the adjacent continental shelf, whereas the spawning of M. parvipinnis occurred in intermediate channels associated with medium stability values (N~0.06 cycles s-1). Fish egg and larval abundances were null or scarce near the glacier, and the abundance of M. parvipinnis eggs was positively related to the temperature and salinity of the water column, and negatively related to water column stability. Moreover, a negative relationship was observed between seawater density and the diameter of S. fuegensis eggs. The relation between ice melting and ichthyoplankton may have consequences for advective transport and mass mortality of fish eggs and larvae, as well as pelagic-benthic coupling in the Chilean South Patagonia. Global climate change has increased glacier ice melting at high latitudes, and the increased entry of colder, less saline waters in coastal areas may have consequences for the ichthyoplankton in the Chilean Patagonia. En estos sistemas productivos no se ha estudiado la nutrición para obtener buenos rendimientos conservando la fertilidad del suelo. En este sentido, se realizó una investigación cuyo objetivo fue evaluar la aplicación de fertilizante fosfórico de fondo en combinación con abonos orgánicos, sobre el estado de fertilidad del suelo ferrítico, para lograr una producción sostenible de las hortalizas. Se seleccionaron tratamientos de un experimento con diferentes dosis de P2O5, abono orgánico de fondo y humus de lombriz. Se utilizaron como índices evaluativos la actividad respiratoria y celulolítica, la nitrificación del suelo, pH (KCl), MO, P2O5, K2O y se tuvo en cuenta los rendimientos del cultivo. Los resultados mostraron que la aplicación de abonos orgánicos, humus de lombriz y fertilizante fosfórico en las dosis estudiadas, provocó cambios en el estado microbiológico del suelo, resultando perjudicial la combinación de los materiales orgánicos con la dosis máxima de fertilizante fosfórico (900 Kg ha-1). La adición de materiales orgánicos logra suplir las necesidades de carbono en estos suelos. Se obtuvo un mejor equilibrio entre los indicadores microbiológicos y los rendimientos del cultivo, cuando se combina los materiales orgánicos con la dosis mínima y media de fósforo (300 y 600 Kg ha-1) o cuando se aplican estos sin la fertilización mineral. Este rango de concentraciones no sería aplicable a aquellos ecosistemas que, de manera natural, presentan niveles altos de nitrógeno. Concluimos que los problemas comentados pueden agudizarse en aquellas regiones del mundo (por ejemplo, en el sur de España) donde se esperan disminuciones de los recursos hídricos y aumentos de las temperaturas ambientales como consecuencia del cambio climático en curso. Brontaea normata (+99,9), Brontaea quadristigma (+96,9), Synthesiomyia nudiseta (+96,5), Ophyra aenescens (+96,2), Musca domestica (+95,7) and Atherigona orientalis (+93,8) had the highest synanthropic indices, showing a marked preference for human environments. The most abundant species were B. normata (24,31%), Biopyrellia bipuncta (20,60%) and Pseudoptilolepis nigripoda (15,82%), the latter two showed a preference for uninhabited areas. A total of 11 new records for Colombia were found: Ophyra aenescens, Cyrtoneuropsis pararescita, Morellia basalis, Neomuscina dorsipuncta, Biopyrellia bipuncta, Pseudoptilolepis nigripoda, Neomuscina instabilis, Neomuscina currani, Polietina orbitalis, Neomuscina pictipennis and Cyrtoneuropsis maculipennis. Except for the first four species, the remainder presented negative synantrophy indexes (from minor to major), which would allow to use them as ecological indicators of the disturbance degree of dry forests in Colombia.Se evaluó el índice de sinantropía al igual que otros aspectos ecológicos de la familia Muscidae, mediante muestreos mensuales simultáneos en tres ambientes (urbano, rural y bosque), para lo cual se utilizaron trampas van Someren Rydon cebadas con excremento humano, vísceras de pollo, pescado y cebolla en descomposición. En cada zona se instalaron cuatro trampas (una por atrayente), durante 48 horas cada mes, realizando colectas cada 12 horas. Se colectaron 5726 ejemplares pertenecientes a 19 especies y 13 géneros. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la velocidad a la cual el frijol Matambú (Phaseolus vulgaris) se expande después del remojo del grano. Se desarrollo un sistema de procesamiento de imágenes digitales automatizado para medir el volumen de grano individual y reteniendo su integridad. La expansión volumétrica se evaluó con modelos Peleg y sigmoides para temperaturas de agua de 20-70 oC. Las ecuaciones de los parámetros cinéticos se describieron como funciones de temperatura utilizando la ecuación de Arrhenius con una energía de activación de 22.410 kJ mol-1. Los resultados obtenidos son potencialmente útiles para futuros estudios sobre propiedades de alimentos, procesos y diseño de envases.
