El seguimiento de las características del bosque es relevante en el contexto de cambio climático. En este estudio, se ha evaluado la estructura vertical y horizontal, así como las reservas de carbono de un parche boscoso de 28 ha en sucesión temprana en el Caribe de Costa Rica. Esta evaluación se ha hecho con base en el uso de la tierra y en una hipótesis de homogeneidad forestal. Los resultados indicaron que el promedio del DAP, la altura de los árboles y la apertura del dosel fueron 1.15 m, 20.83 m y 18.5%, respectivamente. De las seis variables estudiadas, el DAP y la apertura de dosel fueron las más importantes para determinar la estructura forestal y los resultados mostraron alta homogeneidad en el bosque. Un cálculo de la biomasa sobre el suelo determinó que la finca estudiada tiene entre 100-130 T por hectárea para un total de 1372-1795 T de carbono total sobre el bosque. Este estudio representó el primer acercamiento a la investigación forestal de la estación experimental bajo análisis y ha sido importante para determinar la línea base de información de esta. Se espera que futuros estudios puedan utilizar la información de la presente investigación para darle seguimiento a la progresión boscosa en ese sitio.

Los Máster que abordan los problemas ambientales han sido impartidos en las universidades desde la década de 1960. A medida que ha aumentado la severidad de los problemas que abordan y se han vuelto globales en escala y alcance, las ofertas de educación superior han aumentado también en consecuencia. Hoy en día, los Máster ambientales ofrecen una variedad de especializaciones, a menudo integrados en institutos o centros ambientales de la universidad, y conducen a miles de estudiantes de carreras ambientales, como activistas, defensores, formuladores de políticas, técnicos, administradores de recursos e investigadores. Brindan una oportunidad para comprender y debatir críticamente principales conceptos como la sostenibilidad, la economía verde, la resiliencia ecológica, los servicios ambientales y la buena gobernanza. La gravedad de las crisis ambientales también requiere un currículum más radical: críticas sobre el crecimiento económico (incluido el crecimiento ecológico), justicia social y ambiental, y sobre la ecología política que aborda el acceso desigual a los recursos. A la luz de estas complejas demandas y de las crecientes oportunidades de formación para abordar la justicia social y ambiental, discutimos un modelo único y exitoso de Máster ambiental interdisciplinar que se imparte en una gran universidad australiana que ha hecho promovido la justicia en su programa aun cuando se realiza en un contexto marcado por objetivos financieros impuestos por el régimen neoliberal prevalente en el sector de educación superior en Australia, y con financiación insuficiente. El programa tiene un enfoque distintivo para el aprendizaje interdisciplinario, lo que permite una amplia gama de opciones para los estudiantes, y para la enseñanza en diez facultades. Esto ha requerido una administración ágil y una fuerte defensa de un enfoque inusual para la gestión de la pedagogía ambiental. El programa de Maestría en Medio Ambiente ilustra cómo los programas de posgrado pueden ofrecer un espacio alternativo para el compromiso personal, institucional y ambiental con la justicia social y ambiental.

En este trabajo se analizan las bases de la gestión ambiental frente al cambio climático en los 12 municipios del departamento de Quindío, Colombia. Se efectúo una revisión documental y análisis de datos y observaciones obtenidos sobre la gestión ambiental en el marco de cambio y análisis climático en la planificación territorial y planes de desarrollo sobre dos vigencias administrativas (2012–2015 y 2016-2019). Se encontró que las directrices para el progreso no han sido implementadas efectivamente en algunas administraciones o es incompleta la inclusión del tema ambiental y climático, en el ordenamiento territorial de las respectivas administraciones municipales, en el sentido de establecer medidas de protección y prevención ambiental efectivas. Lo anterior se debe al modelo económico imperante y/o en casos, por ejemplo, a los conflictos de interés de las personas que realizan y proyectan las herramientas en el contexto de la planificación y desarrollo sustentable. Por tanto, enfrentar desafíos de gestión ambiental a la luz de los requisitos del cambio climático a nivel de los gobiernos locales requiere una comprensión de las complejas dimensiones del territorio y la coordinación con la identidad del mismo, más allá de un modelo desarrollo impuesto.

Fractals seemed to have permeated most scientific fields, including ecology. In fact, biodiversity and ecological processes are affected by spatial complexity, and fractals can help understand patterns at multiple scales. In this paper we evaluated the main quantitative trends and the profile of ecology publications using fractals. Publications about fractals in Ecology experienced a high increase in the last two decades, and most articles were published in highly visible ecology journals. However, studies were authored mainly by US scientists, and researchers from developing countries had a minor contribution. In addition, studies were highly biased towards terrestrial environments, and empirical approaches were preferred. Os fractais pareciam ter permeado a maioria das áreas científicas, incluindo a ecologia. De fato, a biodiversidade e os processos ecológicos são afetados pela complexidade espacial, e os fractais podem ajudar a compreender esses padrões em múltiplas escalas. Neste trabalho avaliaram-se as principais tendências do perfil ecológico, bem como foram quantificadas as publicações utilizando fractais. Publicação sobre fractais em ecologia sofreram grande aumento nas últimas duas décadas e muitos artigos foram publicados em revistas de alta circulação. No entanto, os estudos foram escritos, principalmente, por americanos, e os pesquisadores de países em desenvolvimento tiveram contribuição menor. Além disso, os estudos foram desenvolvidos em sua maioria em ambientes terrestres, e as abordagens empíricas foram preferidas.

Con ese fin, se realiza un estudio de caso del proyecto Xai-Xai en Mozambique. Las cifras de tierras afectadas por procesos de desertificación o en vía de desertificación son cada vez más alarmantes de tal forma que aproximadamente el 30%, de la superficie terrestre se presenta, en zonas áridas (40-45 1\Ikm2). en donde habitan cerca de 600 millones de personas y un 4% de la superficie terrestre se presentan propiamente desiertos con cerca de 60milloncs de habitantes.En este articulo, se presenta un marco metodológico para la determinación de los indicadores ambientales biofísicos que determinan áreas en desertificación o en vía de descrtificación hacia la determinación y caracterización de estas áreas en Colombia, igualmente se presenta un escenario de la magnificación de está problemática a finales del siglo L'CI, asociado al cambio climático global. Estos estudios fueron realizados en el seno del Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Esnldios Ambientales, IDEAM en el marco de las investigaciones sobre la degradación de suelos}' tierras en Colombia del Sistema Nacional Ambiental SINA y la preparación de la primera Comunicación Nacional ante la Convención I\farco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio climático. Los resultados estiman que en Colombia, las tierras afectadas por deserrificación totalizan 4'828,875 hectáreas, que correspondientes a 4.1% del territorio nacional, de los cuales el 0.6%, el alcanza niveles extremos de gravedad y de insostenibilidad, en tanto gue en el 1.9 % los niveles son moderados y en el 1.4 %} restantes son leves. Con el escenario climático global en 100 años, bajo un escenario climático del indicador basado en el índice P (precipitación)/EPT (evapotranspiración), se considera que Colombia podría tener una superficie adicional de desertificación de 3'576,068 hectáreas (3.1%), para un total de 8'404.943 hectáreas, correspondientes a 7.2% del territorio nacional.

The occurrence and distribution of Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous associated with Cyttaria hariotii parasitizing three Nothofagus species (N. dombeyi, N. antarctica and N. pumilio) in northwestern Patagonia (Argentina), as well as the factors that may affect this distribution were herein studied. Between 2000 and 2007, samples were obtained from 18 different locations. Based on physiological tests and morphological characteristics of sexual structures, 72 isolates were identified as X. dendrorhous. Representative strains were studied by MSP-PCR fingerprinting and sequence analysis of the ITS region. MSP-PCR fingerprints were similar for the newly isolated strains, and were also identical to the profiles of the strains previously found in this region. Patagonian strains appear to be a genetically uniform and distinct population, supporting the hypothesis that the association with different host species has determined genetically distinct X. dendrorhous populations worldwide. X. dendrorhous was recovered from N. dombeyi and N. antarctica. Approximately half the sampling sites and samples were positive for X. dendrorhous, but the isolation recovery rate was low. X. dendrorhous was absent in the early stages of ascostromata maturation, becoming more abundant in later stages. The present work represents a step forward in the understanding of the natural distribution and ecology of this biotechnologically relevant yeast.Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous (Phaffia rhodozyma) asociado a estromas de Cyttaria hariotii en bosques de Nothofagus en el noroeste de la Patagonia. Se estudió la ocurrencia y la distribución de Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous asociado a Cyttaria hariotii en tres especies de Nothofagus (N. dombeyi, N. antarctica y N. pumilio) del noroeste de la Patagonia (Argentina), y los factores que podrían afectar esta distribución. El muestreo se realizó entre 2000 y 2007 en 18 sitios diferentes. Según las pruebas fisiológicas y las características morfológicas de las estructuras sexuales, 72 de los aislamientos obtenidos se identificaron como X. dendrorhous. Se estudiaron cepas representativas mediante la técnica de MSP-PCR fingerprinting y secuenciación de la región ITS. Los perfiles de MSP-PCR fueron similares, tanto entre los nuevos aislamientos como entre estos y los de cepas previamente obtenidas en la región. Aparentemente, las cepas patagónicas forman una población genéticamente uniforme y distinta de otras poblaciones. Esto apoya la hipótesis de que la asociación con diferentes especies hospedadoras ha determinado la diferenciación genética de X. dendrorhous en todo el mundo. X. dendrorhous se recuperó de N. dombeyi y de N. antarctica. Aproximadamente la mitad de los sitios de muestreo y de muestras fueron positivos para X. dendrorhous, pero la tasa de aislamiento fue muy baja. X. dendrorhous está ausente en estadios tempranos de maduración de ascostromas y se hace más abundante en estadios más tardíos. El presente trabajo contribuye al mejor entendimiento de la distribución natural y la ecología de esta levadura, de relevancia biotecnológica.
