</text>

Thus, it is essential to analyze the environmental impacts of this sector, especially the destination of textile losses from cutting processes. One option to take advantage of textile waste is to transform them into new products. In this way, the present work aimed to evaluate the impact of the production of a twine bobbin from textile waste that is used in the manufacture of handicraft products. The method was based on the ISO 14044 standard and the product system covered from the cradle to the factory gate. Primary data were obtained for the internal activities of the plant, while the other inventory data came from the ecoinvent database. We evaluated the environmental impacts and energy demand. The interpretation of the study considered the contribution analysis of the impacts per group of processes and sensitivity analysis to evaluate the influence of the methodological choices of the product system modeling and the extension of the system boundaries to include the use and post-use steps. The inclusion of the environmental burden to produce the textile flaps as co-products from garment sector demonstrated representative increases in environmental impacts and energy demand, thus the methodological choices of inventory modeling were decisive in the comparative results of recycled and conventional twine. The extension of the system boundary demonstrated the representativeness of the environmental impact and energy demand contributions of the product use step depending on washing and drying mode. Thus, the definition of the procedure of allocation and extension of the boundaries of the system influenced significantly the environmental impacts and energy demand of the product made from recycled twine. These results demonstrate the need to define the product category rules to allow the comparability of life cycle studies of textile products.    Keywords: Life cycle assessment (LCA).

From the idea of sustainability, agriculture has acquired new connotations beyond the productive aspect, and associated with conservation of natural resources and rural territories, in recognition of their multiple functions. Based on this concept, which values the socioenvironmental functions performed by rural families, the present paper made an analysis on a rural settlement in the São Paulo state, aiming to identify functions beyond the production and their expression in this particular territory. With a methodology based on qualitative and quantitative information, it was observed that, in the settlement in focus, agriculture carries with it questions of territorial cohesion, maintenance of food security, agrobiodiversity conservation and the encouragement of other producing activities, being the central element of the rebuild of a rural way of life in this environment.</text>

<text>Pig farming generates significant amounts of biodegradable organic waste that can be stabilised by means of anaerobic bio-digestion, with the nutrients and energy being recycled to add value to the activity. The aim of this study was to analyse the economic and financial viability of setting up a system for the agronomic and energy use of waste from pig farming, generated on a farm in Mamborê, in the State of Paraná. The volume of waste generated by the 4,855 pigs was estimated in order to calculate the value of the biofertiliser and biogas, and obtain the possible revenue. The analyses of economic viability were carried out for the full budget of setting up a biodigestor and motor-generator system and the cost surveys necessary for operation of the bio-integrated project. These costs were compared to revenues in a ten-year cash flow. In order to check the profitability of the project, the following deterministic methods of investment were applied: Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The initial investment was BRL 160,321.43, and the annual operating, maintenance and depreciation costs totalled BRL 77,401.55. Considering the nutrients N, P2O5 and K2O, and the electrical energy, it should be possible to obtain BRL 121,186.63 per year, allowing amortisation of the investment over four years. The NPV and the IRR had a result of BRL 669,959.70 and 25.31% respectively. The results therefore led to the project being followed, revealing socioeconomic and environmental benefits.
