Among the various oilseeds, the castor bean was identified by the National Program for Production and Use of Biodiesel, as the ideal one to promote social development in Brazil's northeast region. However the survey shows that the production of this raw material was not competitive for biodiesel production. The research is qualitative, descriptive and exploratory, and multi-case studies were used for their analysis. The instrument used for data collection was a semi-structured personal interview. Visits to production units were also conducted, which enabled data triangulation. Thus, this paper describes each driver and presents a picture of the competitiveness of both agricultural and industrial productions in this chain. The influence of each driver was evaluated using a Likert scale. The results present a clear view of the competitive segments in the analyzed agribusiness chain.</text>

<text>Objective. The rural diversification is a way for family farmers to prosper or even to perish. However, deciding a new rural activity can become hard work. The objective of this work is creating an Information System that helps the farmer in decision making, through financial indicators. Method. A questionnaire was applied to 20 family farmers of Oeste Paranaense with a quantitative approach, and a bibliographical and documentary research was carried out to verify Information Systems available. Subsequently, a software project was developed using UML elements and the ASP.NET Core MVC 1.1 development framework with PostgreSQL 9.5 database. The IDE used for development was the Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition. The tests were performed in a Linux environment with Ubuntu 14.04, Apache 2, and Chrome 55 browser. Results. The implementation of the software project resulted in the nominated application of Rural Financial Planning (Plafir). Plafir is a web application that assists in decision making when the farmer decides to invest in a new rural activity. Based on financial models pre-registered in the system by agricultural technicians, and a table of inputs with updated prices, the farmer can select a particular model, simulate the production, and check the financial results. Conclusions. Family farming is lacking Information Systems for decision making, and the application Plafir meets the objective proposed in this study, contributing to the decision making of a new rural activity.</text>

<text>Family farming is recognized by the rural development that provides a sustainable manner, and to diversify its activities can prolong their existence and expand the principles of sustainability. However, this sector is lacking in tools in Information Systems (IS) to assist in decision making. The objective of this work is to understand the reasons that inhibit rural diversification and analyze the tools in IS available in the market for this purpose. For this, a questionnaire was applied to 20 family farmers of Oeste Paranaense with a quantitative approach and performed a bibliographic and documentary research about IS from rural sector, which had as sample Gerenpec and Planagri. The results show that the family farmers have difficulties in the financial planning of a new rural activity and little knowledge of persons or entities that offer this service. Still, everyone has access to the Internet and want to enhance their knowledge in the rural sector. For the IS available, both are outdated, lack mobility and ease of use. It is concluded that family farming is lacking in information systems to assist rural diversification, just in time that the Internet promotes agility to access the information. This paper presents data that contribute to researchers of the rural sector and Information Technology, as well as contributing to sustainable rural development through assistance to the family farmer.</text>

<text>A deterministic mathematical model of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) disease is introduced. Medical masks, supportive care treatment and a government campaign about the importance of medical masks will be involved in the model as time dependent variables. The problem is formulated as an optimal control one to minimize the number of infected people and keep the intervention costs as low as possible. Assuming that all control variables are constant, we find a disease free equilibrium point and an endemic equilibrium point explicitly. The existence and local stability criteria of these equilibria depend on the basic reproduction number. A sensitivity analysis of the basic reproduction number with respect to control parameters tells us that the intervention on medical mask use and the campaign about the importance of medical masks are much more effective for reducing the basic reproduction number than supportive care intervention. Numerical experiments for optimal control problems are presented for three different scenarios, i.e., a scenario of different initial conditions for the human population, a scenario of different initial basic reproduction numbers and a scenario of different budget limitations. Under budget limitations, it is much better to implement the medical mask intervention in the field, rather than give supportive care to control the spread of the MERS disease in the endemic prevention scenario. On the other hand, the medical mask intervention should be implemented partially together with supportive care to obtain the lowest number of infected people, with the lowest cost in the endemic reduction scenario.</text>

<text>Increased carbon dioxide levels (CO2) in the atmosphere triggered a cascade of physical and chemical changes in the ocean surface. Marine organisms producing carbonate shells are regarded as vulnerable to these physical (warming), and chemical (acidification) changes occurring in the oceans. In the last decade, the aquaculture production of the bivalve scallop Argopecten purpuratus (AP) showed declined trends along the Chilean coast. These negative trends have been ascribed to ecophysiological and biomineralization constraints in shell carbonate production. This work experimentally characterizes the biomechanical response of AP scallop shells subjected to climate change scenarios (acidification and warming) via quasi-static tensile and bending tests. The experimental results indicate the adaptation of mechanical properties to hostile growth scenarios in terms of temperature and water acidification. In addition, the mechanical response of the AP subjected to control climate conditions was analyzed with finite element simulations including an anisotropic elastic constitutive model for a two-fold purpose: Firstly, to calibrate the material model parameters using the tensile test curves in two mutually perpendicular directions (representative of the mechanical behavior of the material). Secondly, to validate this characterization procedure in predicting the material’s behavior in two mechanical tests.</text>
